2023.05.28 15:38 hughmahn4 Help me decide - Compact SUV or Coupe

Some context, wife and I currently share a midsize SUV, and while the experiment has been interesting, we need a second vehicle. The SUV will become hers and I’m looking for myself but needs to be automatic for the times she wants to drive it. Groceries, road trips with lots of luggage, etc would be done in the current suv.
Ok, so I want something sporty but can’t decide on a compact suv or a coupe. Technically I don’t need back seats but my luck soon as I don’t have them I’ll need them.
For SUV’s I’m looking at the BMW x3m and the Porsche Macan gts. Cars I’m looking at the BMW M4 and the Porsche 718 cayman (which is a stretch because of 2 seats). I’ve looked at a few 911’s in my price range and with 10k miles the interiors are already rough; I just don’t it.
So my question is, what do others do that already have an SUV? Do you buy another SUV or a car? I don’t really want a truck. If I need a truck, I rent one from my local Home Depot for an hour. Are there other options out there I haven’t considered that might be recommended that does not exceed my max limit of $105k.

The Many Benefits Of A Love Spell #lovespell
https://preview.redd.it/6lqwhbknkqj51.jpg?width=902&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=359d3b80775f85f2d7a37ee06c6ced3b06954a7d
There is a belief that casting spells can turn things around and make life better. Well, the result will depend on your intentions and how you followed the directions as you cast the spell. A love spell has been applied by people with the optimism of attracting, seduction, love, and attraction. There is a bit of difference between a love spell and any kind of black magic in that it doesn’t impact negatively on a person.
In essence, love spells are nothing more than strong purposes. The spells are cast to draw love and make someone love you. It can also be used to strengthen an already existing relationship. It is about attracting love in life and bringing happiness.
While it is undeniable that everyone needs happiness in life, it is also clear that love is the ultimate source of happiness. True love is the epitome of the happiness that everyone craves for. Nevertheless, true love is one of the hardest things to get in the world. The confusion that is in everyone’s mind is where to find true love. So how can love spells be of assistance in this regard?
Usually, successful love begins with attraction. You need to get attracted to the other partner for them to start paying attention to you. If you have experienced some difficulties in getting the love of your life then it could be because you love someone whom you don’t attract. This is always the case with men. It is difficult to honestly love someone that doesn’t love you. Love spells can save you the hustle and bustle by letting you get your true lover- the one to truly get attracted to each other.

https://preview.redd.it/9vobwiopkqj51.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8ddc1b8249c050b566a98d688ea4ec1de4623bab
Although marriages are not meant to be where constant fights and disagreements occur, it is unfortunate that this is the situation. Couples normally disagree on many things they discuss. The challenges experienced in marriages don’t come with an impressive lesson to kids and it amounts to domestic abuse. No one wants that to happen in their marriage. The simplest approach to this is the use of a marriage love spell. It will guarantee harmony in the family.
Most men prefer being bachelors for no clear reason. Well, there is no problem with that. However, this impacts negatively on women. The end result is that women will try to coax their men without success. Love spells offer the solution in such scenarios. It will help to manipulate the man’s attitude so that they could conform to the marriage proposals.
From the recent trends, men are usually to blame for most marriage problems. Think of a woman with one or two kids and a loving husband. Suddenly, the man starts doing some things that make the woman uncomfortable in the marriage. At some point, there may be a new lady that is in love with the husband. Certainly, this will be the end of a good marriage. Luckily, Love spells will work to stop your partner from being unfaithful.
For some individuals, finding someone to replace their lost love is not a big deal. Yet for others, this is exactly the contrast. Some people will struggle to go through hard times of depression in an attempt to bring back their lost partner. At some point, the whole thing appears a bit promising but the ultimate process ends in tears and heartbreak. To guarantee you a breakthrough, you need to consider a love spell that will bring back your lost partner the soonest.
The greatest gain of a love spell is that they are so responsive thus their outcome manifest as soon as possible. More so, they lead to the required results. Additionally, they don’t usually need a physical link between them and the individual they are casting the spells for. 2023.05.28 14:13 Johannes_Katze Drove my friends GT3 and it made me appreciate my mx5 even more

Drove my friends GT3 and it made me appreciate my mx5 even more
I was at a trackday with some of my friends and when it came to driving back (bit over an hour drive) my friend with a beautiful 911 991.2 GT3 Manual (a manual gt3 is my absolute dream car) stopped and was like "I want to drive your mx5, you take my car" of course that is not something you have to tell a car person twice.
So I got in and the first bit of the drive were straight 2 lane per side roads with a 90khp speed limit. Which in the mx5 is not too bad, as you can just cruise with the top down and still feel like you are going at least not super slow with the car moving around over the straight, but not flat road. The gt3 however is not happy with going 100kph. It does that in second gear (at 6,5k rpm, but I mean it revs to 9k). And every single one of its 500 hp desperately wants to go forward. So as a person that values his licence you sit at 100-110 in 4th gear and whenever a truck comes up you press the loud pedal slightly and it just pulls and pulls and when you look back on your speedo you are going 160+ after what feels like one second, without even using full throttle. And that sound, incredible. But does it feel fast? Still not really. So you slow down again and hope for the next car you can overtake, so you at least have a reason to go a bit faster. It's also even more uncomfortable and harder that the MX-5. These are first world problems, that we as slow MX-5 drivers simply do not know.
Then my friend overtook me and led me into some very nice roads, just wider than the Porsche (Which is probably double as wide as the MX-5) with a roller coaster feel that would put the WRC finland to shame (but with very good asphalt instead of gravel). My friend (who is a waaay better and faster driver than me) really hussled the MX-5 around these roads, so I could really drive the GT3 as fast as I would have done without someone leading me. And did I have incredible fun? Yes, 100%. But did the car make me feel like a driving god, like the MX-5 does so easily? No, because you would need to possess the skills of Water Röhrl to drive the GT3 to its limits on roads like this safely. So I was driving at maybe 50-60% of what the car can do and it was letting me know that. Because the Porsche 911 is a mix of normal car and spaceship, it is perfectly drivable on normal road speeds, without feeling too crazy. Exext that sound, it is truly amazing, at any speed. But it is also not as engaging at these slow speeds, if you want to feel the limits of the car you are going 3x the speed limit, regardless of what that speed limit is. But what is missing is the responsiveness and movement of the MX-5. How it turns instantly when you turn the steering wheel even for a centimeter, how it gets light over bumps, how it moves around in a corner, how the rear gets light when breaking into a corner, ... And I am sure you can experience that in the GT3 as well, but as a mere mortal? On roads like these I would crash before even reaching the limit.
So I have probably talked too much, but what do I want to even say with this? We NA drivers should really appreciate how analog and fun these cars are, and how good they make you feel as a driver. I wish I could drive these roads in some other 90s sports cars, to see how they feel. I had a little drive in a 993 porsche 4s with a GT3 engine, and that was probably the single greatest car I ever drove.
I would love to hear if you have similar experiences? What about even older cars then the mx5, do they feel even more fun to drive, or are the tires and suspension maybe not as nice as in a more modern car?
Also I don't want to throw any shade at the 911 GT3. It is probably the single greatest track car if you drive from and to the track, that has ever been built. Also I will really miss the automatic throttle blip rematching in a manual, it makes shifting so much smoother, when you don't what to revmatch yourself. And sure it's fun, but on a 2h drive in traffic, I get tired of it.

2023.05.28 13:10 embillus why can’t my car just cooperate?

my car (2007 volvo s60 2.5t) hydroplanes for seemingly no reason. i change my tires regularly and keep up with all of the problems that come along with owning this car. if it’s raining, i will hydroplane. it’s gotten to the point that i just stay home when it rains because it’s too intimidating and dangerous otherwise. i can drive slow or fast or in between and sure enough, i’ll go sliding. i’m putting this in this subreddit because i didn’t get my license until i was 19/20 because of driving anxiety. obviously hydroplaning anytime i try to drive causes me to drive, pullout, and turn slower which is so stressful because the last thing i need is other impatient drivers doing stupid things to get by me. that’s like a step by step guide on how to cause an accident. i don’t know what to do. help? i know nothing about cars but i do know that nobody else i know has this issue. and it’s absolutely my car, don’t worry. i’ve driven plenty of other cars/trucks just fine. i just don’t understand, i’m so stressed about it.

2023.05.28 10:21 Probitus Creepy hike in the woods

Before starting to tell you what happened and how I got into this situation, I'd like to introduce myself a little bit. I'm 29 years old and live in Switzerland, where I work as a cop. Basically it’s like 911, someone calls, then dispatch sends us for all kind of interventions. Sometimes, things you see in that job changes your perspectives of what’s « normal ». You meet all kind of people and sometimes weird places too. But in general, my country is safe and I almost never carry my gun home, unless I go training at the shooting range.
Also, and because it’s linked to my story, I love music and driving cars. It helps me clear my mind and makes me feel good. Some time ago, I met a club of car-enthusiasts and from time to time we meet and do little road trips across the country.
I’m also very chill and calm person and I always try to find a peaceful solution to anything, especially at work. I try to always see good in people and prefer talking to them.
Ok here starts my story:
Last year (2022), I went on a road trip with a nice guy I met through the car club. Let’s call him Robert to keep anonymity. That trip was really cool and we drove almost all night (Felt like playing NFS), which was great because the lights of cities look beautiful at that time and I’m more of a night owl. After that trip, we said we’ll stay in touch to make another trip some day.
Weeks passed when suddenly I got a message on whatsapp. « Hi, it’s been a while! How are you? Still up for a little trip? Tell me when you’re free. ». When I saw the message, I directly checked my schedule and found a free day. I sent him back : « Hey! Yeah sure! I’m free on … . Let me know if it works for you too. ». He answers : « Ok, works for me too, where do you want to hike? ». Then I was confused. Why is he talking about hiking? I checked again the message and noticed it was written by another Robert (2) from my contacts. Not only did I mistaken the dudes by their names but also because their profile pictures on whatsapp looked alike.
The guy that contacted me was an old acquaintance I met through some of my friends when I did some dj-set parties. It was a few years ago and we were both passionated by the same music. Then from time to time we bumped through each other at concerts. So I had just planned a day with this guy I mistaken for someone else. I felt bad and didn’t want to cancel because although It wasn’t the person I thought, that guy was nice too and It’s been a while since I went for a hike in the woods or the mountains. So I was like « Yeah, why the hell not. ». Then, we started planing the hike. I didn’t want something too challenging, so I made a proposition. I knew a nice hike that goes through the woods and mountains, the views are beautiful and you get to meet hikers here and there. Also, the path has multiple campfire spots, where you can grill some sausages. Robert (2) agreed and asked me if it’s ok for me to take him at the train station and we’ll leave my car at the parking next to woods.
The day of the hike, I arrived at the train station where Robert (2) was waiting for me. I looked through the place and couldn’t find him. Then He waved at me. Here, I got my first red flag. The guy I knew and saw on his profile picture looked different. It was Robert (2) but he looked sloppy, he grew long hair and had a beard. I charged up his bag in my trunk and we moved. During the ride, I noticed that Robert (2) smelled bad. It’s the kind of odor I smell on the job when I’m confronted with homeless people or drug addicts. But I noticed he came well equiped for the hike which means he wasn’t in a no money situation. So I decided to not judge him because of his body odor and to ignore it. Besides, we’ll be in the woods so outside I wouldn’t notice that.
We stopped at a shop near the woods to get some firestarters and that’s when Robert asked me If I was up to change the hike because he knew another location close to the one I have chosen and that had some nice spots for pictures (we both carried good cameras). I’m good with a map and I checked it on my special app. The hike was the same length as mine but it went near a river which I found really nice. « Ok, let’s go check that ».
Finally, we parked my car and arrived at the forest. I saw some old barnes there and little fields for cows. Our little trip started. During the hike, I was questioning Robert on his life to catch up time. I already knew he was a smart guy who did engineering school but I learned he moved out from our city and found some job at a construction company where he does all kind of calculs to build stuff. Then the more I learned about his life, the more I felt something was odd.
Robert started telling me he has a girlfriend but they are going through some hard times and he thought she might leave him soon. Then he continued saying that he missed some days at work because he felt depressed and because he wasn’t sure it pleased him anymore. He said he might get fired. I was trying to cheer him up and keep him focused on good stuff and advised him to consult if necessary. He asked me about my job and how I react with dangerous people and stuff like that. I wasn’t reassured by all this conversation but I always get all kind of questions from people so I can’t tell I was shocked. Also, during the walk he sometimes looked a bit off, like a robot.
At some point, near the river, we found what looked like ruins from an old mild (around 1920-1880 I’d say so). It was a cool spot and I took a pic or two. But we didn’t see any people on our path and the sky got cloudy and it started to rain a bit. Luckily, I was well equipped, I carried everything you need in this kind of places : water, food, fire starters, first aid and a knife. We kept moving until we found a campfire spot with a wooden table. We decided to stay there and eat.
I asked Robert to get some wood while I’ll set up the table and look for little branches to maintain the fire. Robert puts his bag on the table and starts to show me tools he got with him. He grabs a big hand saw, puts it on the table, then he takes out two knives one of them was a really big one (Switzerland’s law is permissive regarding knives in my opinion). I was surprised to see this kind of knife because it’s a 3 hours hike and we’re not staying there for the night, nor hunting something. So I decided to pull out the knife out of the knife-holster I had attached on my belt to go get the branches. Robert looked at me and then he said something in a surprised tone that froze me to the bones. « Oh, you took a knife too. »
Immediately, my mind started racing. « Too? What does this mean? Why wasn’t I supposed to get a knife when we planned to go into the woods and make a camp fire ». Robert suddenly leaves to get what I asked him and I got an uneasy feeling. It’s like my whole body was in alert mode, saying me something is going on. I’m used to be around dangerous people at the job but it’s different when you’re working fully equipped (bulletproof vest, gun, paper spray,…) and you’re with your partner and the situation I was in right now. I mean, we were alone in the woods and we didn’t see anyone on the path.
From that moment, I decided to keep both my eyes on Robert and keep him in sight all the time, especially his hands. That’s what you learn at the police academy. People always use their hands to do harm. Moreover, I decided to keep a minimum distance in case he tries to do something.
A few minutes later, Robert comes back, puts all the branches he grabbed from trees, his knife still in his hand. He looks straight at me and just stands there. Suddenly, he said : « I’m sorry… ». His tone felt empty of emotions. Immediately I got up and looked at him. I was sure he was going to run at me and try something bad. I got a rush of adrenaline. Then he started to mumble something, I could barely understand : « We’re both here in the woods… alone… we got knives… I’m sorry… ». What does he mean? Why does he act that weird? Then Robert continues « Let’s hug. ».
My body gave me even more alerts. Why does he want to get close to me, while he is holding a knife in his hand? Is he trying to do something bad? Why would I hug him out of nowhere?
Then my mind told me I’ve got to get out of this situation quickly but without making him suspicious. I wanted to leave this place and go home. I finally replied, like nothing happened : « No worries man, let’s make that fire, eat something so we can get home before going completely wet. ». But I didn’t want to get close to Robert. I asked him to get more branches because the ones he got me were wet. I took the rain as my opportunity. After he came back I told him the firestarters didn’t work well in the rain and it might be a better option to pack our stuff and head back to the parking. He first looked sceptical and disappointed but agreed.
We packed everything and left the place. I didn’t want to talk to him on our way back but I didn’t want him to notice something was odd so I just kept talking like nothing happened. From that moment, his tone changed a bit, seemed colder to me. I kept him in my sight. After all we were still alone in the woods. He kept being very negative towards life and people. It made me think he maybe was suicidal in some way. I was happy I did not carried my gun that day because I was afraid he might try to do something because of that.
Once we got back to the parking where I finally saw people, he asked me if I could give him a ride. I refused arguing I just got an urgent call from someone and needed to leave.
After all that, I kept asking myself, was he trying to do something? Was he just afraid by the situation? Maybe it was odd for him, even though we knew each other and even partied together. Was he planing something? I mean we were alone, in a place he knew better than me and he was a really smart guy.
All I can tell you, is that I blocked him after that and decided to contact our common friend. I knew he was close to Robert so I explained him the whole situation. My friend told me that Robert was going through some depression and was feeling bad lately. I told him that I can’t do anything legally to help him without his consent but I advised my friend to call him and make him see someone. A few weeks after my friend had a discussion with Robert and apparently Robert was open to see someone about his problems.
Thank you for reading my story. Let me know what you think about all this. I’m still confused to this day. I might be making my mind up but I saw many people with similar reactions to Robert and I’m not reassured about this.

2023.05.28 07:48 WarmHugs1206 “Meet Me At Mama’s Place”

This happened about two hours ago.
I live in a sleepy part of Metry very close to the parish line but near a major cut-through street that could have you out of the parish in maybe 1-2ish minutes depending how crazy you’re driving. To my delight - It is still very much a neighborhood - from the over priced real estate down the block to the multi-families where drugs are definitely being sold to the wonderfully nosey old ladies in their cottages.
My aunt lives next door to me, we are on a corner and she in the middle of the block between my front street and her other neighbor who faces the cut-through.
Aunt calls me and asks if my husband will go outside and check because someone is knocking on her door and she doesn’t know who it is. My first thought is no fucking way I’m sending him, I’m calling 911. She tells me to wait. I do. I’ve got a sleeping 3 yr old snuggled together with husband and if I wake one, I wake both. She offers no details besides that this person knocked and is now sitting on her porch. And is wearing a baseball cap. She lives alone. It’s not very well lit.
I tell her to hold on and I start putting my boots. I’m going check her front door from around the way. Before I get out my own door she says “oh my god he’s coming to my back door call 911” so I hang up and call 911. Lock my own back door which is a good few paces from hers and also very poorly lit. I’m panicking because - isn’t home invasion like everyone’s worst nightmare?
While on the phone with 911, I’m looking at my aunt’s house through my bathroom window. I can’t see the back door and momentarily I can see a guy in the shadows come from the back of my aunt’s house and begin to make his way to the aforementioned thoroughfare. I then see my neighbor on the other side of aunt’s house come out and start talking to the guy. From my window all I can see is the back of shadow guy walking away from my aunt’s house. Intervening neighbor has two small children inside.
My husband at my prompting gets up at this point and isn’t alarmed in the least. “It’s probably some drunk guy wandering into the wrong house.” There is a neighborhood bar nearby. Fair-ish enough although for the better part of a decade living here we have never had a drunk visitor.
We’re both watching the neighbor talk to the guy while I’m still on the line with 911. The shadow’s body language suggests harmlessness but that could also be drug-addled and reckless. Erratic?! Who can tell? The 911 dispatcher informs me that there are now units on the scene.
Like fucking stealth hawks in the night four JPSO squad cars pull up on either side of the block 2/2. No lights no sounds. They were there in five minutes flat.
Turns out by the time the officers got there my aunt figured out it was a friend of her son, early 20’s. My cousin had told said “burglar” friend via text to “meet me at mama’s place” and friend thought he meant his literal mother’s house. Friend is not drunk whatsoever. He’s a sweet guy who interpreted my cousin literally. He even arrived with a six pack of Andy gator. Cousin had apparently texted him “come through the back” - hence the walking to attempt to enter through the back porch.
As we stood in the street while the cops pulled away without fanfare we couldn’t help but laugh. All I could think was how relieved I was it wasn’t a bad guy. How ridiculous I felt for such a false alarm. And how fucking glad I was that if it had been bad that the police showed up. Holy fuck.
Now. There are many holes in the Swiss cheese that aligned to create a memorable situation for my aunt, my cousins’s friend, and me.
All I can tell you is this: at some point in the first conversation with my aunt, I was scared shitless. The next thing is that those squad cars showed up so fast I was astonished. The final thing I will tell you is that I don’t keep a gun in my home because I don’t know how to use one. I believe in them. So if you’re like me, reinforce your doors, or if you do responsibly own a gun, you know who you are. Don’t let the fright lead you. Key word is responsible.
The final, final is - thank you to JPSO. And to NOPD please know that effective policing is possible. What’s your problem? This is not a blame on individuals, it’s a blame on the organization. I used to live in a “safe” part of Orleans parish. I do not consider it as such now because criminal activity which did not exist there before some recent snap of fingers -??? I am extremely concerned about the individual NOPD officers and how degraded they are. Support our police. Public safety is a joint effort.

2023.05.28 04:29 Luvlymonster Dumpster Fire Day. Husband is 24M I'm 24F.

This wouldn't fit on AITA but tbh I just need to rant.
TL;DR: I've had a dumpster fire of a day with my family and husband, and really don't know where to post this.
My grandmother (81) is blind.
I'm (24) trying to move her into a new apartment in my complex.
I transfer all her bills and internet. I arrange all her paperwork and payments.
The whole beurocratic process takes almost a month.
She wants lunch? I take her. She needs groceries? I get them. She needs anything at all? I'll take care of it nana.
I have been her eyes and her right hand ever since I became an adult.
Even though my brother (18) lives with her and my dad (50's) lived with her up until yesterday, I've always been the one taking care of her. However I live 30 minutes away by tollway and car, and only have a bike, so my physical visits are limited. Hence why I'm helping her move closer.
My brother and dad refuse to clean anything so there's stains and roaches everywhere when i visit She even does her own laundry.
Today should've been the last day for anything major and then it would've been smooth sailing. I just had to pick up a uhaul, and meet my little brother and his friend he said was helping him at the old apartment to pick up furniture, then we'd stop and get gas, get some lunch, unload at the new apartment, and everything would be happy ever after. My brother has had a month to pack after all.
I get upstairs and my brother has everything stuffed randomly into boxes. The bottoms look like they might fall out, the beds haven't been taken apart, not everything is packed yet, and I'm starting to feel a little stress.
Apparently my brother's friend didn't show up so I told nana it would be okay, my brother and I would load the uhaul. So I ask my brother to help me with the washer and dryer and he says "Ummm.... how about nah." I tell him we should load those first because the heavier stuff needs to be behind the cab. He says I have no idea what I'm talking about, that he worked for a moving company for four months (when??) and he's in charge here.
I feel a bit of a panick attack coming on so I grab some water and pain meds for my nana since she's been having back problems all day. The door is wide open and the dog runs out so I grab him and help him in the uhaul (he's suuuper old and has lots of leg and joint problems)
I get back in the uhaul and call my husband (24, married for 2 or 3 years, it's common law so idk) and he doesn't pick up so I call four more times and at this point the panick attack is in full gear so I admit I was impatient when I picked up the phone. My husband asks to speak to my family so I give my nana the phone and my brother sees and says that I'm just like our mother. (Our mom used to call her sisters when I was having a panick attack or any sort of breakdown and complain about how much of a burden I was and straight up lie to them for sympathy making up things I did that never happened. She also pitted my brother and I against each other a lot.)
My nana hands the phone to my brother who just hangs up on my husband.
I called my husband back, still needing help with my panick attack, and at this point I'm yelling at my brother because he won't leave me alone. My brother is sitting there cooing at our nana telling her not to worry about me as if she's a dog and he's trying to soothe her from my behavior. He smirks and twiddles his fingers at me.
I almost screamed.
He proceeds to tell my grandmother that I'm mad at him because I didn't get my way and that I'm refusing to help him and that I'm pretending to be a know it all.
I start shouting at him.
My husband tells me I'm being petulant and at that point I hang up on him myself, go for a walk somewhere in the complex and ask my therapist if she can do an emergency session.
I vaguely explain my feelings at the moment and she just tries to reassure me that they all love me even if today is hard, and to send her an email about it we can discuss in session.
I'm bawling my eyes out and consider calling the suicide hotline instead but they suck so I just sit there and sob for a while.
When I've calmed back down I go back to the truck and just tell my brother I'll help him and we'll just do it his way.
He looks at me disgusted and asks me why it looks like I've been crying. I said because he was very mean and he says hes been nothing but pleasant and he didn't mean to make me cry. I said "well you did"
He says cool and starts to whistle and hum as we walk back to the apt, cheerily says "lady's first" at the stairs.
We get up there and I ask him what he needs help with. He says he plans on loading the washer and dryer last and he doesn't need my help until then. And that he's still in charge.
So I say "fine" and leave to go have some space for a while.
He texts me again. This is copied and pasted:
"I changed my mind come help me with these boxes so we can return the truck at 7 " (we don't need to return it at 7, just before tomorrow)
I told him no, I didn't feel like being treated like he was treating me, and he already said he didn't need help.
He proceeded to taunt me saying I was a whining little girl throwing a temper tantrum and I needed to grow up, not sic my husband on him (my husband asked to speak to him, I just wanted my husband to comfort me during my panick attack), and what the fuck was wrong with me? It must be that im on my period (I'm not for the record...)
He then texts me that he's ordered me a lyft to go home, that i'm useless, worthless, a waste of space, and HE'LL drive the truck to the new place (He just got his license a week ago and has never driven a truck like a uhaul before)
I of course don't get in the lyft and berate him for wasting our nanas money on getting one (I'm about to get a new card for her in the mail that I know for a fact only she will be able to use so this won't be a problem soon)
Now here's where things become a dumpster fire. My nana stops being able to move becauze her back pain is so bad and says she needs to go to the hospital. My brother informs me of this and then locks himself in his room.
I call 911 for my nana, tell her I'll take care of everything.
She goes to a hospital in an ambulance (fuck...... this is America btw) and I organize the back of the uhaul with what my brother has loaded (he has a glass lamp sitting up on a table in the back, standing stuff has not been laid flat, just.... so shitty, glassware sitting in high places) and ask my brother if he wants me to take the dog for the night. I get back to my complex, my husband helps me unload her stuff into her new apartment (some stuff broke anyways), we let the dog go to the bathroom, and I return the uhaul. She has until the 31st to leave the previous apartment. I don't know what to do but I've done all I can today.
I get home and start a bath and my husband sits in the bathroom with me explaining WHY he said what he said on the phone (calling me petulent)
I asked him if there was anything else he wanted to tell me and he said no.
So I said I wanted to be alone and he started crying and left.
I don't know what I need right now.
Maybe just to have said all of this to someone before I implode. I don't even expect anyone to read all this. I'm just not in a good state right now.
I haven't eaten all day so I'm probably just gonna leave this here and go eat something and go to bed before I hurt myself, so sorry if I don't respond.

2023.05.28 03:41 palocci The Brazilian "Secular Stagnation" and what Lula can do about it

The Brazilian
Introduction
Here's another effortpost on Brazil! This time I'll be talking about why the Brazilian economy stagnated, and what we can expect from Lula in terms of economic policy (I've talked about this in the past but now I'll go into more detail).
Between 1920 and 1980, Brazil was a clear economic success story. For 60 years, our GDP per capita grew at an average of 4% a year. This 'golden age' ended in a hyperinflation crisis, which made the 1980s become known as a 'lost decade', and since its resolution in 1994 with the Plano Real, our economy has experienced minimal growth: from 1980 to 2020, the average GDP per capita growth rate was only 0.7%.
Evolution of the Brazilian per capita product, at 2010 prices, from 1900 to 2021. The scale of the graph is logarithmic in base 2.
In this post, I'll try to explain the reasons for Brazil's low growth in the last four decades and what Lula's plans are to address them.
The debate
Before delving into the actual causes of the "semi-stagnation", I would like to explain the economic debate in Brazil. This debate revolves around two major groups of economists: the "developmentalists" and the "liberals." The term "developmentalism" may be unfamiliar to many people here, but it is very present in Latin America. A decent explanation for it could be "dirigisme with Latam characteristics."
In short, liberalism in this context is associated with economic orthodoxy and a pro-market orientation in economic policy, while developmentalism leans towards economic heterodoxy and advocates for direct state interference in the economy. This debate is, in theory, separate from the traditional right versus left political divide, as we have had governments from both ends of the political spectrum adopting policies aligned with either school of thought. For instance, Lula I (2003-2007) represented a left-wing liberal government, while Geisel (1974-1979) presided over a right-wing developmentalist government. However, in practice, liberalism is associated with the right-wing while developmentalism is associated with the left-wing.
One area of major divergence between those two groups is full employment. Liberals argue that the Brazilian economy generally operates at full employment, which means that there are well-defined supply-side limits and restrictions in the economy, whereas developmentalists believe it tends to operate below that level. This implies that the economy's natural state is one of perpetual aggregate demand deficiency, and thus the government could just increase spending to mobilize idle production factors and stimulate economic growth.
Furthermore, liberals typically view direct state intervention in the economy with distrust, opposing increased public investments in infrastructure and most forms of industrial policy. Their preference generally leans towards reducing government spending and relying on a 'crowding in' effect, together with supply-side reforms. Conversely, developmentalists perceive state intervention as a necessity to stimulate the economy, favoring a robust industrial policy and increased public investments.
Those are significant oversimplifications, and many economists do not align themselves with either group. In any case, I would say this categorization reasonably represents the current debate.
It's a tradition in Brazil to divide ministries between liberals and developmentalists to ensure a balance between the two. The current Finance Minister, Fernando Haddad, believes in a middle ground approach, with some of his secretaries (e.g., Guilherme Mello) leaning more towards developmentalism, while others (e.g., Bernard Appy) lean more towards liberalism. Planning Minister Simone Tebet and Industry and Commerce Minister Geraldo Alckmin are firmly in the liberal camp. However, due to the nature of his ministry, Geraldo Alckmin will probably concede more to developmentalist policies (as he's already doing). Aloizio Mercadante, the President of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), is considered the leader of the developmentalist branch of the government, along with Workers' Party President Gleisi Hoffmann (some people jokingly refer to her as the main opposition to Fernando Haddad and the 'Twitter Shadow Finance Minister' due to some of her tweets).
Without further ado, let's get to the causes of Brazil's stagnation.
Guido Mantega (Finance Minister between 2006 and 2014) and Antônio Palocci (Finance Minister between 2003 and 2006). Mantega is associated to developmentalism and Palocci to liberalism.
Education
First of all, the significant growth of the 20th century left a terrible educational legacy. Brazil only began to have a somewhat consistent educational policy in the 1990s and 2000s, when basic education was universalized. To put it into perspective, in 1990, the average number of years of schooling in Brazil was 3.8 years. Even Sub-Saharan African countries like Congo, Zimbabwe, and Zambia had higher average schooling levels than ours. Approximately a quarter of the population were illiterate.
The key change came with the 1988 Constitution, which decided that Brazil would try to become an European-style social democracy. Since then, considerable progress has been made, but clearly not enough. The main educational bottleneck lies in Elementary School II, which typically spans the ages of 12 to 15. It is during this stage in Brazil that the discrepancy between age and the appropriate grade level drastically increases, leading to higher rates of grade repetition and students falling behind in their education.
This problem is probably related to the transition from a single teacher trained in pedagogy in Elementary I to several specialists teaching only one subject. This transition also occurs at the onset of adolescence, which is naturally a turbulent phase already, with the introduction of drugs, alcohol and various forms of prejudice being normal. The result ends up being a distancing of the student from school.
Two Brazilian states, which have been governed by center-left parties for many years, serve as examples in Brazilian educational policy: Pernambuco and Ceará.
A highlight in Ceará is the Programa de Afabetização na Idade Certa (Program of Alphabetization in the Right Age), which aims to ensure that all students in the state's public school systems achieve literacy by the age of 7. The plan was based on the following pillars: (1) the elaboration of a specialized literacy curriculum that was adopted in all the municipalities, with structured materials for teachers and students containing a daily routine of classroom activities and homework assignments; (2) pedagogical practices to encourage reading in the classroom; (3) financial incentives for the municipalities that achieve better results in education; and (4) evaluation and monitoring of the program, with a census and diagnostic test that is applied at the beginning of every semester.
Pernambuco has implemented a Full-Time High School system that stands out. The system is based on the following pillars: (1) the introduction of a subject called "life project," which encourages students to create plans with goals and objectives for their lives; (2) guided study, providing a space for autonomy in learning and fostering self-directed learning skills; (3) hands-on, practical classes that combine theory and practice; (4) youth clubs, where collective interests of young people are pursued; (5) tutoring, where teachers (tutors) interact with students to support their development; and (6) full-time education, of course.
Both plans have been tremendous successes and could be implemented nationwide. The Member of Parliament Tabata Amaral has proposed the program "basic education like Ceará's, high school like Pernambuco's." We might see that put in practice. Izolda Cela, the mind behind Ceará's basic education plan, is the Executive-Secretary of the Ministry of Education, and the current Minister of Education is Camilo Santana, the governor of Ceará between 2014 and 2022.
Izolda Cela (Executive-Secretary of the Ministry of Education) and Camilo Santana (Minister of Education).
Public Investments
Furthermore, there is a general consensus that the significant decrease in public investment since 1980 explains part of the problem. During the Golden Age of Brazilian growth, public investment mounted to about 6% of GDP, whereas it currently stands at approximately 4% since the lost decade. Liberal economists tend to attribute this to the expansion of the welfare state, that came with a substantial increase in the tax burden (from 25% of GDP in the 1970s to 35% in 2000). On the other hand, developmentalist economists point to the decline in public savings due to the privatization of state-owned enterprises in the 1990s.
In his second government, Lula created the Programa de Aceleração do Crescimento (PAC) (Growth Acceleration Program), whose objective was precisely to expand public investments. Unfortunately, the plan ended up with highly controversial results, primarily due to the low administrative capacity of the Brazilian State and corruption (some like to call the plan the Corruption Acceleration Program!).
But now the Workers' Party has gained new experience. Many of its state governments became famous for extensive investment programs in partnership with the private sector, delivering positive results. Chief of Staff Rui Costa, in particular, had a successful experience with public-private investments during his tenure as the governor of Bahia. He is now expected to lead the "New PAC", which will probably be announced at some point between today and July. (The project still has no name and is provisionally being called "New PAC").
Here's what Rui Costa has said about the project: "We will have, in an unprecedented way, investments with Public Private Partnerships (PPIs) at the federal level. Many states, including Bahia, have made PPI projects. [...] We are negotiating with the Ministry of Finance the conditions for guarantees so that we can leverage these projects."
Lula wants to meet with the 27 state governors to determine which state projects the Union should prioritize for its investments. In recent weeks, Costa has held individual meetings with the state governments to define which projects will be included in the new PAC. In all, eight governors have already been heard.
In a speech on the May 1st holiday, Lula said the following about the project: "We are inviting foreign businessmen to invest in Brazil and we are showing them the great projects that we are going to present in the third PAC. It will be the largest infrastructure project in this country."
Former Governor of Bahia (2014 - 2022) and current Chief of Staff Rui Costa.
Deindustrialization
Another problem is the early deindustrialization that is taking place in Brazil: we are losing our industry before becoming rich. In the beginning of the lost decade, the industry accounted for one-quarter of the Brazilian GDP, whereas today it represents around one-tenth. The reason for this process is complex, and once again, economists disagree. Liberals point to the new form of production organization that emerged with globalization, where the manufacturing of goods was fragmented into different stages, each executed in different countries. According to this line of thinking, Brazil failed to adapt to the new industrial configuration and remained stuck in an unrealistic autarkic dream. On the other hand, developmentalist economists usually argue that after the end of hyperinflation, Brazil fell into a trap of having an overvalued currency and high interest rates, demolishing the industry's competitiveness. (I am more inclined towards the first thesis, although it is a fact that the Brazilian exchange rate was detrimental to the industry after the Real Plan).
Now I want to talk a little bit about the Brazilian industrial bourgeoisie and its problems. In the 1960s, the then sociologist and future president Fernando Henrique Cardoso published his thesis on the Brazilian industrial entrepreneurs. Based on his research, he concluded that Brazilian industrialists did not have any national project, and (1) "only cared about their personal interests when speaking on behalf of the class" and (2) "[their] political action consists of personal participation in the patrimonialist game." Brazil has a serious problem related to what we call 'patrimonialism,' which refers to the capture of resources from the Brazilian state to benefit private interests.
Unfortunately, industrial policy in Brazil often results in tax exemptions, subsidies, tariff protections, etc., for an inefficient, patrimonialist, and somewhat broken industry that was developed in the 20th century. The Workers' Party itself fell into this outdated corporatism while in power, especially during the first Rousseff administration (2011-2015). It is a shame that advocating for greater state involvement in the economy ends up becoming a defense of those interest groups.
In this sense, I find myself opposed to both liberals and developmentalists. While the latter end up promoting an agenda that only benefits private interests, albeit with good intentions, the former dismiss any state planning, believing in an 'economic abiogenesis.' Since 2016, we have been reducing the role of the state and waiting for a crowding in effect, but with no success. We need strong a industrial policy, but it has to be transparent and not perpetuate the old game of patrimonialism.
In the words of the brilliant economist Laura Carvalho: "We want a State that identifies ways to stimulate technological innovation and product development in partnership with the private sector. But this policy cannot become hostage to the existing private sector. We have remnants of our industry of the 20th century, for example the automobile industry, and when we do industrial policy, we end up just giving incentives to them. This is a state that does not choose winners, but rather is chosen by losers. Those who are struggling in the industry try to eat the resources of the state to survive."
Unfortunately, the signals from the new Lula government are quite negative. Industry and Commerce Minister Geraldo Alckmin recently announced a plan of incentives for the automobile industry, which is essentially the same program that has failed several times in the past. There are positive things coming from his ministry, but few of them have much to do directly with a well-made industrial policy. It's a shame.
His plans beyond industrial policy appear positive, as shown in the following excerpt, at least: "Brazil had an early deindustrialization. Europe also deindustrialized, but ours was precarious and severe. More than reindustrializing, we need a neo-reindustrialization. A central issue is the competitiveness agenda. There is a principle in medicine that says: suppress the cause and the effect ceases. We have to act on the causes of low growth. Our tax model generates an absurd cost for companies. It is not fair. We have an absurd judicialization that leads to legal insecurity and hinders exports. The whole world has a VAT (value added tax. I defend it. I think Haddad is doing well and I am a great enthusiast of the tax reform."
Probably more than any other politician of expression today, Haddad positions himself as a republican and talks about reducing the patrimonialist distortions of the Brazilian public budget. He talks about "closing the drains of what is called Brazilian patrimonialism" and "ending a series of abuses that have been committed against the fiscal base" of the country. He says that many sectors have been "overly" benefited "with rules established over the decades and that have not been reviewed by any outcome control. Many have expired from the point of view of efficiency, and need to be revoked."
Former Governor of São Paulo (2001 - 2006; 2010 - 2017) and current Vice-President of Brazil and Minister of Industry and Commerce Geraldo Alckmin.
Business Environment
Brazilian productivity has been stagnant for decades. What is causing this? The main suspect is the Brazilian tax system. There is an enormous complexity in the various indirect taxes (ISS, ICMS, PIS/Cofins, and IPI), which forces every company to have an excessively large department dedicated to tax payment. Additionally, numerous divergences of interpretation arise between the Federal Revenue, state authorities, and businesses. On every corner of our cities, there is a specialized tax law office to assist companies in dealing with the extremely high level of litigation in our taxation system. To make matters worse, our indirect taxes discourage investment in locations with higher social returns, as the tax complexity and special tax regimes artificially alter the profitability of investments and production. A general simplification of these taxes, with the adoption of a Value Added Tax, could have an impact on the economy's efficiency equivalent to the Plano Real, which ended hyperinflation.
Even beyond the tax issue, the Brazilian business environment is terrible. According to the World Bank's Doing Business 2020 report, which measures the ease of doing business in 190 countries, Brazil ranks 124th. This problem is related to excessive bureaucracy, unexpected judicial decisions, loopholes in regulatory frameworks, and disrespect for contracts.
The Tax Reform is going to be the government's main priority after the approval of the New Fiscal Anchor. Planning Minister Simone Tebet summed up the reform as follows: "The Tax reform is the only silver bullet that we have to save Brazil."
And here's what Finance Minister Fernando Haddad has said about it: "There is no way to grow Brazil's productivity with this tax system [...] We are developing a tax reform that is even more modern, because it introduces in the national tax system a Value Added Tax that solves a good part of the flaws of the current system that, in my opinion, is the great villain for the low growth rates of our productivity." The idea is to approve the Tax Reform still this year (Haddad talks about doing it in the first semester!).
Special Secretary for Tax Reform Bernard Appy.
Economic Isolation
Brazil has a very closed economy. Among the 160 countries analyzed by the World Bank, the Brazilian economy is only less open than that of Sudan. The average protection applied by Brazil to capital goods is 14 times higher than in Chile and 25 times higher than in Mexico. This is probably the most expressive cause of the low productivity and deindustrialization in Brazil, together with the tax system. Here, I quote the brilliant economist Edmar Bacha: "[The closure of the Brazilian economy during the Geisel government (1974 - 1979)] caused a tremendous drop in the economy's productivity and an increase in the cost of capital goods. And this, I believe, is what lies at the root of our stagnation after the so-called economic miracle (1968-1974). Our industry became unable to compete internationally. And we were forced, because the industry has this extraordinary lobbying capacity, to prevent the redesign of the Brazilian industry to participate in global value chains."
Bacha's argument makes sense: the collapse of GDP growth coincides with the collapse of capital accumulation (the growth rate of the capital stock) after Geisel's government. Why did capital accumulation collapse? Bacha explains that using a decomposition of the investment = savings relationship: K' = s(1/p)v - δ, where K' = capital accumulation, s = savings rate, p = relative price of investment, v = output-capital ratio, and δ = depreciation rate.
Between 1950-1980, the "golden age" of Brazil, K' grew at nearly 9% per year. Between 1981-2014, this number was 3%. Why? Looking at the historical series, the difference is not in savings or depreciation. What happened was that the output-capital ratio fell by about one-third, and the relative price of investment increased by one-third. In other words, the capital requirement per unit of output increased significantly, and at the same time, the price of investment goods rose significantly. According to Bacha, this process occurred between 1973 and 1983, a period in which the Military Government pursued an autarkic economic policy.
The ideal scenario for Brazil would be to open its economy and have an export-oriented industry. The industry we have developed is heavily reliant on our domestic market, without external competition. In the words of economist Nelson Barbosa: "Brazil cannot produce ships, but it can produce airplanes. Brazil does not have car manufacturers, but it has bus manufacturers. Brazil cannot have a domestic production of microelectronics, but it has a good domestic production of electric motors. So we need to study what worked in these sectors to see if it can be replicated in other sectors. All these successful sectors, Embraer, Weg, Marco Polo, are sectors that are competitive in Brazil and in the world. Here is the first clue: correct industrial policies create domestic production that competes domestically and internationally. They are integrated products that import and export extensively. Value chains."
However, an open trade policy without a plan may not be positive either. In Nelson's words: "Development always means increased productivity. Opening the economy can stimulate productivity, but it can also lead to a negative specialization. You can open your economy and become a country that only exports commodities, with an inflated services sector that only sells domestically, with a significant portion of your population relying on informal jobs. Which is what happens in Brazil. So I think trade openness is inevitable, more developed countries are more open, but thinking that just opening up will automatically lead to development is naïve and something we shouldn't do in the 21st century. I believe that strategic trade integration is crucial and necessary for development. Unilateral openness, without any plan, will only reinforce the specialization we already have today."
In any case, it is certain that the current excessive protectionism cannot be maintained. Opening up would allow broader access for companies to (1) cheaper and higher-quality inputs and (2) foreign-produced capital goods and technology, (3) create significant competition effects to invigorate the economy, and (4) create a 'selection effect' that would eliminate losers and favor winners.
But this is the agenda that I am least hopeful about. Trade openness is a topic that faces strong opposition from the Brazilian left and would likely only occur under a moderate center-right government. I hope, at least, that some trade agreements can be reached to open up the economy. The European Union-Mercosur trade agreement would have a significant impact and would be very important but I'm not very hopeful that it'll be approved.
Haddad is still optimistic, though! He said that a more emphatic diplomatic effort will be made starting in the second semester, in a movement that will take advantage of Brazil's leadership in Mercosur and Spain's leadership in the European bloc.
Simone Tebet (Planning Minister) and Fernando Haddad (Finance Minister).
Interest Rates
Interest rates in Brazil are much, much higher than the global average. Our credit is scarce and dysfunctional. Lula likes to repeat that Brazil is a capitalist country without capitalism because there is no credit.
Brazil has the second-highest bank spread in the world, second only to Madagascar. This means that banks in Brazil charge very high interest rates for lending money. To give you an idea, Brazil's bank spread is higher than the average observed in countries at war. There are several reasons for this, but some stand out: (1) savings in Brazil have historically been very low (around 20% of GDP), (2) the government consumes a significant portion of savings to finance itself, and (3) the Brazilian banking sector is extremely concentrated, with a few banks dominating the entire sector.
The other issue in this discussion is the current policy interest rate set by the Central Bank. Brazil currently has the highest real interest rate in the world, at around 9%. The debate about whether this interest level is correct or not is quite active in Brazil, with its proponents arguing that the current Brazilian inflation is demand-driven and pointing to inflation in the services sector and core inflation, while its critics argue that inflation is not demand-driven, pointing to the fact that Brazil has had a negative output gap since 2015 and that supply shocks can explain the inflation in services.
This debate is complex, and it is hard to determine definitively which side is right. Nevertheless, the Central Bank is strongly adhering to the first thesis.
The current Chairman of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto (RCN), is the grandson of an economist of the Military Dictatorship and was appointed by Bolsonaro. He will remain in his position until 2024 due to the new autonomy granted to the Central Bank in 2021. In this scenario, Lula engaged in a public war against RCN, urging him to lower interest rates. The situation became tense, but Lula never showed any willingness to take effective action to remove him, remaining only in rhetoric. Throughout the conflict, Haddad positioned himself as a moderate, playing a certain "good cop, bad cop" game with Lula and gaining trust in the financial market. Apparently, Lula intends to nominate former executive-secretary of the Finance Ministry Gabriel Galípolo to replace RCN in 2024. He was recently appointed as director of monetary policy at the Central Bank, and is widely identified as a heterodox economist.
Haddad's current plan is to stabilize Brazil's deficit to allow for a monetary loosening. Here's what he said: "We are not at a point where fiscal expansion is going to help the economy. If there is room for any stimulus, it will be monetary. If we know how to make the transition, there is room for a lower interest rate, you just have to give security to the monetary authority." He does not seem to be concerned about banking concentration, though.
Chairman of the Central Bank Roberto Campos Neto.
TL;DR
The Brazilian economy has seen very little growth since the the lost decade in the 1980s. One of the primary factors contributing to this stagnation is the economy's low productivity. There are several reasons behind this low productivity, including:
  1. Inadequate infrastructure and insufficient investments in its development.
  2. A significant delay in comparison to other countries in terms of investing in education.
  3. Unreasonable economic protectionism.
  4. Private groups exerting undue influence and capturing the Brazilian state (patrimonialism).
  5. Failure to adapt our industry to a globalized world.
  6. Excessively high bank spreads.
  7. A terrible business environment, particularly due to the tax system.
There are other reasons for sure, but I'd say most people would agree those are the most important ones. Also, here's my effortpost on the Workers' Party, in case you haven't read it.

2023.05.27 20:26 SillyAd9410 A Semi-Collaborative Pop Culture TL #10

YOU decide what events should change in the world of pop culture, be it real or ASB (future movie gets shown in the past, an actor does/doesn't die, alternate casting choices, unmade media possibly getting made, media is rewritten, a change in the box office or something new entirely)!
I document what happens in a current timeline of Earth!
We all have fun!
CURRENT TIMELINE:
1818: Mary Shelley's The Modern Prometheus, a novel in which scientist Henry Frankenstein creates a sapient creature named Prometheus is made. Prometheus becomes a stalwart of the monster genre.
1907-1908: A young comedian named Charlie Chaplin refuses to accept the offer of Fred Karno to come to the U.S. He becomes a famous comedian, often incorporating a character he named The Tramp in his stand-up routines.
1912: The Olympic ship crashes upon hitting an iceberg, becoming a memorable event. James Cameron's Olympic (1997) would be the first film to gross $1B, even entering the National Film Registry.
1931: Frankenstein and his Prometheus, an adaptation of The Modern Prometheus starring Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff as Henry and Prometheus is a box-office smash. It would enter the National Film Registry in 1991.
1941: Fleischer Studios' Mr. Bug Goes to Town is a box office success, saving the studio. Today it is one of Disney's biggest competitors, along with Warner Bros.
1951: Fawcett Comics wins a lawsuit over National Comics for the rights to the characters of Captain Marvel and Superman. While National Comics would die in obscurity, Fawcett Comics would be Marvel's biggest competitor.
1962: Marilyn Monroe doesn't die. She goes into hiding in Las Vegas doing revue shows. Discovered by higher ups at NBC, she signs on to The Marilyn Monroe Show, a sketch comedy show that runs until her death in 1999.
1966: Warner Bros.' Twister comes out, becoming the highest grossing film of the year. It would spawn "Tornado-mania", a series of tornado movies made to copy its success. It would enter the National Film Registry in 1996.
1969: Nixon resigns his presidency the become a talk show host. The Dick Nixon show airs until 1983.
Make America Great Again - written and directed by Mel Brooks - is released. The film stars Ronald Reagan as himself as he decides to run for President after becoming a washed up movie star - promising to “Make America Great Again”. Wacky shenanigans ensue, including President Reagan trying to build a massive wall on the Southern border to stop Soviet influence, claiming that “both sides have very fine people” in regards to the Civil Rights Movement, and him accidentally starting a cult about how hippies are secretly stooges of a global satanic cult run by the elites.
The film is a critical and commercial success and becomes one of the greatest and funniest comedies of all time. It enters the National Film Registry in 1999.
The Dick Cavett Show airs on ABC, becoming the main competitor to NBC's Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. It would end in 1996 to make way for its new replacement The Jon Stewart Show.
Creedence Clearwater Revival release a song about the Civil Rights Movement called Fortunate Son. It becomes their signature song. It enters the National Recording Registry in 2013.
1974: Star Trek: The Continuing Mission, a revival of the original 60s series, airs in syndication until 1981.
1974-1979: Michael John Kricfalusi becomes an anti-Rhodesian mercenary during the Rhodesian Bush War. He becomes a POW by forces from Apartheid South Africa. As a result, he is physically and mentally scarred.
1979: Ozzy Osbourne goes into rehab and continues to play for Black Sabbath, leading to them getting a Beatles-like Renaissance in the 80s, making Heavy Metal one of the 80s most notable music genres.
1980-1981: From February 1980 to August 1981, John Kricfalusi would heal his mental wounds at a mental institution.
1982: John Kricfalusi founds Spümcø, an animation studio that was founded due to John's perceived views on how Hanna-Barbera and Rankin/Bass, two studios he worked at, failed to make good cartoons.
1983: E.T. for the Atari proves to be a very good game, making millions for Atari. This would inspire them to improve their games on their future consoles such as the 5200 and 7800, leading them to become a fierce competitior in the gaming market. The last Atari console came out in the early 2000s.
You Nutzy Rascals!, a short made by John K., is the first to feature prototype designs of Ren and Stimpy.
1985: The War of the Worlds, a film made in collaboration with Disney and Jeff Wayne, based on his musical album adapting the H.G. Wells story, hits theaters. It is a critical and commercial success, cited for starting the Disney Renaissance. Disney and Jeff Wayne would collaborate two more times, making animated adaptations of The Modern Prometheus (1988) and The Time Machine (1992). It would enter the National Film Registry in 2022.
Warner Communications buys Warner Amex-Satellite Entertainment to make Warner MTV Networks.
1986: Ravel's Bolero becomes the theme to The Legend of Zelda. It would later serve to be the theme for the Zelda games in Japan, with a different theme for NTSC releases.
Cliff Burton survives a car crash and continues to play bass for Metallica, helping put thrash metal on the mainstream map.
1987: Morrissey and Johnny Marr become frenemies. The Smiths continue into the 1990s.
1988: During production of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Harrison Ford is shot and killed by a loaded prop gun. This would lead to it being hastily recut in time for 1989. It would lead to a heavy burden on Lucasfilm. The documentary Ford - Spielberg's Right Hand Man would be released in 2008 to great success.
1989: Doctor Who is saved from cancellation by BBC. It remains one of the longest running TV shows.
Sergio Leone dies of old age. He is remembered for his westerns as well as Don Quixote, The Phantom, and Leningrad: The 900 Days.
1990: John K. creates Big House Blues, the pilot for The Ren & Stimpy Show, which is picked up by Nickelodeon.
1991: Eddie Vedder dies in a car crash before the first Pearl Jam album is released. They find a new lead in Chris Cornell, who also sings for Soundgarden until their demise in 1997.
Ren & Stimpy airs on Nickelodeon, along with Doug, Rugrats, Tiny Toon Adventures, Taz-Mania (both this show and TTA would later air in syndication) and Big Beast Quintet (cancelled in 1993). It is currently the longest running American animated series, beating out Matt Groening's The Simpsons, who cancelled the show in 1998 in favor of working on the long-running Futurama which still airs today.
Tim Burton is attached to direct an adaptation of The Addams Family TV show as a movie. It would later spawn three sequels, with Tim leaving after the second movie. The latter two would be critically panned.
1992: Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace comes out, becoming the highest grossing film of the year. Episodes II and III would later come out in 1995 and 1998 respectively.
J.R.R. Tolkien dies at 100, finishing The New Shadow and The Silmarillion. He was also known for being war minister of the UK from 1940 to 1945.
Stephen Hillenburg is invited to work on Ren & Stimpy after showing his short film Wormholes at the TIFF.

Toy Story, a stop motion film, gains critical acclaim due to its incredible scale, becoming the 2nd highest grossing film of the year.
Sarah Michelle Gellar dies in a kayaking incident days before the release of her only film Clueless. Bad Boys, a film released the same day as Clueless, would become the 6th highest grossing film of the year despite mixed reviews.

Selena Quintalla survives being shot. Jennifer Lopez wanes in popularity.
1996: The Nintendo 64DD comes out in a partnership with Phillips, revolutionising the console industry by introducing CD memory, rising it above the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. One of the top best selling games would be Super Mario 64 2, the sequel to Super Mario 64. The 64DD would serve as motivation for Sega to complete Sonic X-Treme by 1997, which becomes a huge hit. This would give Sega the boost it needed to continue making consoles. Other Mario games made for the 64DD include Mario Takes America and Super Mario's Wacky Worlds.
The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), which had been under a state similar to the Atari 2600, releases its last two games: Super Mario Legends, a game similar in style to the Mario Land games released by Nintendo R&D1, which becomes a minor hit and Animaniacs, a port of Konami's Game Boy game which got mixed reviews.

After his work on Ren & Stimpy, Stephen Hillenburg pitches his own show to Nickelodeon about a sea sponge.
Rapper and music producer Andre "Dr. Dre" Young is shot and killed by a vengefully spiteful Suge Knight in a drive-by shooting, since Young left Death Row Records after accusing Knight of corruption the month prior. His death leads to tributes from fans and colleagues alike, and his first album The Chronic is praised for being influential. Tupac Shakur, in addition to being a rapper, assumes Dr. Dre's role as a music producer out of respect for his newly deceased friend. After Suge Knight is arrested and imprisoned for life due to murdering Young, Shakur takes over Death Row Records. The Chronic enters the National Recording Registry in 2019.
1996-2000: A teen-oriented sitcom, Still Clueless: The Story of Tai and Dionne, runs on ABC from September 20, 1996 to May 19, 2000 for a total of four seasons. A spinoff and continuation to the 1995 film "Clueless", starring the late Sarah Michelle Gellar as Cher Horowitz, and breakouts Regina Hall as Dionne Davenport and Brittany Murphy as Tai Frasier, the series follows protagonists and best friends Tai Frasier and Dionne Davenport as they navigate through life in college without their late friend Cher Horowitz who tragically overdosed to death at a party but hilarious scenarios ensue for the two friends as they mature together in college. Created by Amy Heckerling, Brittany Murphy and Regina Hall reprise their respective roles as Tai Frasier and Dionne Davenport from the 1995 film, and also stars Alan Rickman as the main antagonist, the corrupt and unfairly strict college dean William Davidson. The series becomes very beloved, successful, and memorable, just like its 1995 predecessor. The first season has 23 episodes, the second and third seasons have 22 episodes each, while the fourth and final season has 25 episodes, totalling up to 92 episodes. New episodes always would premiere at 8:30PM on Friday nights, with either a TV-PG or TV-14 rating. The show had a direct competitor in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, another teen-oriented series, which would on Fox for only one season consisting of only eighteen episodes from September 20, 1996 to May 9, 1997. Created by Joss Whedon and based loosely on the 1992 film of the same name, the series stars teen sensation Alicia Silverstone as Buffy Anne Summers, a teenage girl who fights evil vampirical creatures. The show would have a more darker and serious tone unlike it's more lighthearted and comedic competitor "Still Clueless: The Story of Tai and Dionne" on ABC, and new episodes would premiere at 8:30PM on Friday nights, all having a TV-14 rating. Of the two shows, "Buffy" would be less successful as the show would have a lukewarm reception and audiences would more than likely watch the more successful "Still Clueless", which would have an otherwise more welcoming reception (like it's 1995 predecessor). The show's lead actress Alicia Silverstone would still have a briefly successful career in Hollywood; unfortunately, her career would be cut short as she would die from a serious chest infection on February 11, 2002, at the age of only 25.
1997: Reddit, a news and discussion board, is released. It becomes very, very popular.

Aspiring rapper Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs is killed in a gang shootout in Los Angeles, California; however, right-wing news network Fox News reports the shootout as having happened in New York City, New York (which is untrue). This leads to rapper Christopher "Biggie Smalls" Wallace recording a single dedicated to Combs called "I'll Be Missing You" (which heavily samples "Every Breath You Take" by The Police) which was included as a bonus track on No Way Out, Combs' first and only debut album released posthumously on July 22, 1997. The album became influential in the years since Combs' death, proving that, even in death, one can still have a rap career and be influential. No Way Out would enter the National Recording Registry in 2007.
1998: Neon Genesis Evangelion is unknowingly localized by 4Kids, leading to a HEAVILY censored English dub that makes the show popular during the late 90s-early 00s.
Chris Farley wakes from a coma due to a drug overdose. After deciding to give the role of Shrek to Mike Myers his friend, he gets the role of Doug Heffernan on The King of Queens.
1999: Stephen Hillenburg's SpongeBob SquarePants airs on Nickelodeon. Tommy Boy's Return, the sequel to Tommy Boy, releases in theaters. It is considered a cult classic today.
2000: Battlefield Earth is released in theaters to be a huge success, ending up the 8th highest grossing film of the year. This would cause an interest in works by L. Ron Hubbard, making the Church of Scientology a rising religion. Battlefield Earth 2 would later release in 2003 to similar acclaim.

2002: Netflix, the world's first ever online streaming service for film and TV, launches. They release their first Netflix Original - an epic drama gangster film called American Gangster starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe and directed by Ridley Scott - five years later on November 2, 2007, after buying the distribution rights from Universal Pictures (who were set to be the original proprietors). All of their films and series are also given DVD and/or Blu-ray releases, courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, who owns the home media rights to Netflix Original films/series etc.
2003: Call of Duty, a war shooter game, sells 200,000 copies, making for poor sales. No sequels are planned. The Battlefield series gains from this.

Night at the Museum is released to mixed reviews as it becomes a box-office bomb. With plans for a sequel dead in the water, Fox sells the rights to Sony in 2007 who plans to reboot the series, but also keep the distribution rights for the original film.
Blockbuster buys Netflix, moving the website to Blockbuster.com, and naming it Blockbuster Online. After all of its stores were closed, it becomes Blockbuster+.
2007: Kanye West dies in a car crash before his album Graduation releases, causing him to be mourned. This would lead to many people buying the album, creating a short-lived rap revival that would temporarily mark the end of gangsta rap until 2010.
Owen Wilson commits suicide. In discussions about the "Frat Pack", he is replaced by Steve Carell and Paul Rudd. Drillbit Taylor and Tropic Thunder are both dedicated to his memory. Plans for a sequel to Cars are cancelled by Pixar and Disney.
2007-2011: Identically similar to events in our world, screenwriter Simon Monjack and actress and "Clueless" sensation Brittany Murphy (who still starred in this alternate reality's version of the 1995 film "Clueless", but here she instead co-stars with rising co-stars Sarah Michelle Gellar playing Cher, and Regina Hall playing Dionne) are about to marry back in May 2007, but Murphy calls the marriage to Monjack off at the exact same wedding. This causes a scandal that briefly kills her good reputation, and gets her blacklisted in Hollywood (for a while). In this alternate history, Simon Monjack is put in prison for attempting murder on Brittany Murphy, but here, is killed by a crazed cellmate whilst serving time (said crazed cellmate also happens to be a fan of Brittany Murphy). Brittany Murphy then moves to an apartment complex in New York in 2008, ditching Hollywood for good and starting a musical career.
Natalie Portman, a fairly successful but struggling rising young TV actress, is having a hard time finding work in Hollywood due to the failure of the Star Trek prequel television series Star Trek: The Original Generation. She co-starred in the series alongside Hayden Christensen, Ewan McGregor, and Samuel L. Jackson. While the then 56-57 year old Jackson at least got to have a successful career in Hollywood (due to being a Christopher Nolan regular), Christensen and McGregor were rejected by the industry; Christensen started an indie rock band while McGregor then went on to become a successful UFC fighter, but would then become very scandalous as he suffers from numerous arrests and an intense drug addiction. McGregor would then unfortunately die young from a drug overdose on December 7, 2008. Going back to Portman, she would become an indie darling in independent cinema, however her career would be cut short when she would die in a car crash on July 19, 2009, just one month and ten days after her 28th birthday. She was last seen in a DTV thriller called "Abandoned", which released in March 2010. Her death leads to tributes from co-stars and fans alike.
In December 2009, Brittany Murphy is then offered the lead role in Darren Aronofsky's upcoming psychological horror film "Black Swan", about a troubled ballerina. The film would co-star Melanie Lynskey as the troubled ballerina's rival, and like in our world, Winona Ryder, Barbara Hershey, and Vincent Cassel. The film released in December 2010 (like in our world), to rave reviews, with critics calling it Brittany Murphy's finest appearance yet. Murphy would then take home the Best Actress Oscar as well as the Best Dramatic Performance in a Movie Golden Globe for her performance in the film in 2011. Murphy would then continue her acting career following a big career boost, as well as her singing/musical career at the same time. In fact, she releases a fairly successful debut album in March 2011 simply called "Brittany", to positive reviews. It would then become the best selling musical album of the year, even winning her a Grammy in 2012.
2008: Bulletman, the highest grossing film of the year, marks the beginning of the successful Fawcett Cinematic Universe (FCU). It would enter the National Film Registry in 2020.
During the premiere of Tropic Thunder, Tom Cruise announces his retirement from entertainment and Scientology. He spends the rest of his life quietly as a Buddhist in England. As Dwayne Johnson takes Tom's place, Paramount announces plans to reboot the Mission: Impossible franchise (though nothing comes from it).
SpongeBob XXX, an adult SpongeBob reboot, airs on AMC alongside Breaking Bad. SpongeBob XXX would be universally panned, airing only 3 episodes out of a made 6 (all were later put on DVD). It is known for being one of the worst animated series of all time.
Iron Age, a film fully funded by UNESCO, is made as the first film of an IRL cinematic universe. It gets nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, like every film in the IRLCU after it.
2009: Adventure Time, a cartoon by Pendleton Ward, airs on Nickelodeon. It becomes one of Nickelodeon's highest-rated cartoons, airing until 2016. Many people would call it an animation trailblazer, leading to Nick approving more "lore-based" shows.
Half-Life 3 comes out, and continues the high ratings of the Half-Life franchise, making games well until 2017 (counting spinoffs).
Some people would compare it to Regular Show, who they saw as Cartoon Network's equivalent to Adventure Time.
Discord, a discussion site, is released, becoming popular with gamers.
Liam Gallagher has a near-fatal drug overdose after the breakup of Oasis. Finding peace with his brother, Oasis reunites in 2012, releasing a new album in 2015. They still perform.

2011: Fortnite Battle Royale by Epic Games is released to the public. It becomes extremely popular, and is still played today.
2012: Pixar's Newt, a film that came due to the cancellation of Wreck-It Ralph (some claim due to the problems of getting permission from game companies) is released and barely breaks even. It would start a dark age for Pixar, which would continue with Brave and Cars 2.
It would also play a key part in George Lucas refusing to give away Lucasfilm, due to Disney's perceived slump.
After Hillenburg's company dissolves, he becomes the cartoon reviewer Stevey Shark for Channel Awesome.
Jim Carrey dies of a heart attack.
2013: Doug Walker leaves Channel Awesome, leaving Stevey Shark to be the new star. Markiplier, MrEnter, and MatPat would later join Channel Awesome among others.
The Freedom Tower is made to replace the original North Tower destroyed in the attack. Memes would arise from the comparison between the towers.
2014: A Day With Patchy the Pirate, a half-hour short made by Hillenburg, airs on YouTube as Channel Awesome's first foray into animation. It has a troubled production due to being funded online, and would be panned upon release.
Robin Williams survives a suicide attempt, and launches his own suicide prevention program. He would then star in the 2016 drama Uncut Gems by Christopher Nolan, playing crime lord Howard Ratner, giving him a Best Actor Oscar.
2015: Star Wars - Episode VII: The Force Awakens, featuring Darth Maul and Darth Talon as antagonists, is released, becoming the highest grossing film of the year. Two more sequels were made in 2017 and 2019.
2016: John K. dies from multiple scolerosis. Bob Camp takes over as showrunner of Ren and Stimpy.
2017: Growing Around, a new YouTube webseries made by Stephen Hillenburg & Johnathan Rozanski, about a world where grown-ups switch with kids, is released. Despite gaining positive reviews, both the downfall of Channel Awesome and Hillenburg & Rozanski's heinous acts would result in Markiplier buying the license, airing it on his webseries Unus Annus for one last season, ending in 2020.
Chester Bennington survives his suicide attempt. Linkin Park would make its newest album in December of 2020.
2018: Donald Trump starts The Trump Experience, a very popular podcast.

  1. Tempest Finale It was revealed that Shax has a father named Max, and he's the Tempest's Boss. You have to beat him with only using given car: T5 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo (997) [Best Time: 4.800].
Very Weird Shift Pattern (For Pink Slip): Launch 10000rpm, immediately nitrous while shift to 5th at the same time (spam tap) If you're late, it could be 4.9xx, or even worse (5.xxx).
It has 100 races (3 of them are Max's). He said on the beginning that you hurt Shax long ago, and he will do the payback against you. He mocks you everytime when you tried to start a race, and after you finished a race (this is very frustrating).
Jess told you that both the Porsche and GT-R were rivals when she was young, so that they are absolutely fast now.
Because Shax and Max are both British, all races are 1 Kilometre instead of ½ Mile.
Tempest Finale: T5 Max's 2007 Nissan GT-R (R35): 7.000s → 6.500s →6.000s → 5.000s (Pink Slip) [All 1 Kilometre].
Note: He did 0-200 km/h in just 0,2 seconds, also his top speed is 900km/h (Pink Slip)
Max's Appearance: Very old British bald man with black sunglasses and wearing classic tuxedo.
When you actually got his GT-R (R35), the best time will be only 7.100s (½ Mile). Also your fully maxed Porsche will be only 7.000s (½ Mile).
I will post more about my other CSR2 dreams other than Tempest.

2023.05.27 17:17 CIAHerpes We discovered a ghost town where the buildings sweat blood and something strange walks at night

The abandoned building I looked at seemed to be bleeding. Looking down the street, I saw a few more stone structures, and they too had red fluid dripping down their dark granite. My friends and I backed off instinctively.
“Maybe it is just some type of sap,” Amy said, running her hair through her fingers like she usually did when she was anxious. But then the wailing started, and we all looked at each other. I saw the same paleness and uncertainty on all of their faces that I felt inside my stomach.
“What’s that, a fishercat? A fox?” James asked to my right, speaking quickly, his voice quavering. He was always the natural leader of our little expeditions, the one who did the research into abandoned sites or caves and encouraged everyone else to come along. But right now, he didn’t look like much of a leader. His eyes were wide, his skin was pale and he was quickly looking around to the right and left. I knew how he felt.
“That’s no fox,” I said, feeling around in my pocket for my knife. The wailing seemed to come from all around us. It sounded like a woman being burned alive.
The fourth member of our group, Sarah, was the only one who seemed to not be in a state of mortal terror. She calmly looked at the blood dripping down the buildings, walking up to it and sticking her fingers into it, then smelling it. I thought for a moment she would taste it. Thankfully, she didn’t. She wiped the blood off and turned to us.
“Yeah, that is blood,” she said. “I think we need to get out of here.” Her calmness seemed to bring the group back together for a moment, and we all looked at each other. I took out my knife. I looked over at the old church at the beginning of town, and saw with horror that it was absolutely covered in blood now. Every floorboard and wall and beam on it sweated the dripping, red fluid. It looked like a shimmering, flowing maze of dark crimson. It soaked the dirt and grass growing around it, dripping down from every surface.
“If any of you have weapons,” I said, “it may be a good idea to take them out now. We don’t know what is around us, but it is better safe than sorry.” Sarah nodded in agreement, pulling out a keychain with mace on it. James had a boxcutter, and Amy had absolutely nothing, but she went to the side of the dirt road and picked up a thick stick.
We all started walking back to the car in a tightly-clustered circle. The hike would take at least forty-five minutes, even if we hurried and didn’t get lost. We had to follow the red trail until it intersected with the green trail. The green trail would lead directly back to the dirt parking lot where we had parked. I would be ecstatic to see those little green markers.
The wailing never stopped, but seemed instead to follow us. Silvery eyes looked out at us from the mist, but whenever I turned my head to look directly at them, they were gone. They moved so quick, I wondered whether maybe I was just hallucinating them.
James was in the back of our little circle, and I was at the front. I heard a quick commotion from behind me, but by the time we all turned to look, he was gone. It couldn’t have taken more than a fraction of a second for us to look back.
The thick fog on both sides of us obscured sight. We heard a deep, terrified, low scream, but it was cut off in the middle with a horrible gurgling choking noise, and we were plunged into silence. The wailing had stopped.
“James?” I yelled, trying to discern where the scream had come from. There was no reply.
* * *
Throughout history, there have been countless unsolved disappearances of towns or groups of people: the Mayan city of Tikal, the English colony of Roanoke, the entire Roman 9th Legion, the Eskimo village of Anjikuni Lake and many others. One of the most bizarre and least well-known occurred near where I grew up.
Sources from a few centuries ago told of a bustling community of loggers and fur-trappers who had a small hamlet deep in the forests they called “North Windshire”. It consisted mainly of one dirt road with buildings on each side of it. But it had a church, a tavern, a blacksmith, a barber-surgeon, and a few other functioning establishments. The people who lived there were, by all accounts, peaceful and hard-working. The fact that all of them disappeared one night without any sign of a struggle confounded locals, and to this day, no one has discovered any conclusive evidence as to what happened to the townspeople. Explanations ranged from a sudden epidemic to hostile Native American tribes.
A few of my friends and I went out urban exploring and cave exploring, and we knew we needed to see this place. James had brought it up, texting everyone about it, and then Amy went to the local library and found anything and everything she could about North Windshire.
By the next day at around 4 PM, four of us were driving out there. The thick fog of early spring covered the endless forests. We nearly missed the single dirt road leading off to North Windshire, but luckily Sarah’s eagle-eyes saw the faded marker just as we drove past. It got dark around 5:30 but since the hike was only estimated to take thirty minutes each way, I figured we had plenty of time.
The walk into North Windshire was beautiful and peaceful. We complained about our jobs, discussed other abandoned sites and caves we might explore, griped about politics, and drank a couple beers. By the time we reached the outer limits of the town, I was in a good mood, happy to be with friends and explore somewhere new.
But as we entered the first building in the town, an ancient-looking church with the doors busted off and animal droppings all over the floor, an eerie feeling had fallen over me. I could see it was affecting the rest of the group as well. No one wanted to be the first to speak about it, however, not after we had driven an hour just to see this old ghost-town.
Yet when I was inside the church, I could have sworn I saw silver eyes, looking in through the broken windows. There was a feeling of immense power in the church, a feeling of something ancient and inhuman watching us. And a slight smell of sulfur seemed to cover the entire town, mixing with the smell of fog and pine trees that pervaded the forests.
* * *
“Where could he have gone?” Amy asked. She was in clear panic mode. Sarah and I tried to calm her down.
“We need to get out of here, so we can call for help,” I said. Sarah shook her head.
“We can’t just leave James and you know it,” Sarah said, still maddeningly calm about the whole thing. “We have to go look for him. What if that was you? Would you want us to hike out of here and call the police? It could take a few hours before they get here and start searching, and if he is in danger…” I sighed. She was right.
I didn’t want to mention that choking sound that had cut off his screaming, however. It sounded like something was ripping his throat out. And if that was the case, there was nothing we could do by searching. Luckily, Amy brought it up instead.
“It sounded like he was choking,” Amy said, tears starting to fall down her cheeks. “What if he got attacked by a bear or a mountain lion? What if it ripped his throat out? What if by looking for him, we all get attacked too?”
“Sarah is right, though I hate to admit it,” I said. “Even if he did get attacked, he might still be alive. We might be able to help him.” We heard scuffling from our left. I had my knife pointed out in that direction. For a keychain knife, it was rather long and strong, made from Damascus steel and longer than the palm of my hand. With shaking hands, I took the key ring and keys off and slid them in my pockets, so the knife wouldn’t jangle every time I moved. Amy had her thick tree branch ready. The figure broke through the fog suddenly, on the ground and dragging itself forward, and Amy and I both let out a short scream.
My first thought was that it was a zombie, but I quickly realized that wasn’t really true. It had a smell of sulfur, disintegration and feces emanating from it, a smell that made me want to gag and cover my face. But I didn’t dare put my hands up.
Though it had no legs, it moved deceptively fast. It veered towards Amy, who was holding her branch like a baseball bat. She swung the huge thing as fast as she could, knocking the wood into the side of the creature’s head with a massive crack. Its head whipped to the side, its open drooling mouth biting off a piece of its own tongue in the commotion. The tip of its tongue, a dark brown, rotten thing, fell off into the dirt. Its cracked black teeth smashed together, pieces of them shattering.
Yet within seconds, it had turned its head back towards us, and started forward again. Amy quickly backpedaled as I ran forward, stabbing the knife through the side of its neck. With a strong grip, I pulled the knife handle back towards myself, opening up the creature’s throat with a single motion. It opened its mouth in a silent scream, but no blood came out. Instead, white light began to seep out of it. It looked like a thin shimmering mist, which at first dripped slowly out of the creature’s wounds and then began to run faster and faster. The light twisted back towards the abandoned town, forming a spiraling tunnel as it veered down the path. The strange creature had lost the glow of its eyes now. It just lay there on the ground, kneeling on its stumps. Its rotting, filmy eyes slowly started to close. It fell forwards, landing at Amy’s feet.
“Oh my God,” Amy said slowly. “What the fuck was that?” I shrugged calmly, but inside I was just as terrified as her. I could feel my hands trembling badly. I tried clasping them together, holding the knife between them, taking deep meditative breaths in an attempt to stop the trembling. After a few seconds, it seemed to recede slightly.
“I think whatever it is, it is connected with that church,” Sarah said. She still seemed maddeningly calm about the situation. I wanted to shake her and ask her if she understood how close to death she was right now. And then she looked at me. “You lead the way, Dean.” I nodded.
“We need to get as far away from the church as we can, I think,” I said. I started walking down the trail, and they followed close behind. I could practically feel Amy breathing down the back of my neck.
We made good time on the trail. We each had flashlights on our phones. Even though we had no service, the presence of the phones and the bright LED lights they provided made me feel quite a bit better. It seemed to connect me back to the real world, a place of technology and 911 and science, rather than this trail of silver eyes and bleeding churches.
But after hiking for forty-five minutes, I knew there was a problem. The hike was only supposed to take thirty minutes each way. Going in, we hiked the green trail for about ten minutes, which intersected with the red trail. We had only had to hike about twenty minutes on the red trail to reach the town. We had stayed in the town longer than we should have, and it had gotten dark, but since the trails were clearly marked and we had lights on our phones, I hadn’t been worried.
Now I was extremely worried. It would have been nearly impossible to miss the sign and the big green marker on the intersection of the trails, even at nighttime. I knew we hadn’t passed it. It seemed impossible. And none of us wanted to break the silence. Eventually, however, I did. I turned around.
“We’re lost,” I said simply. Sarah and Amy shook their heads.
“Do you think we should turn back around?” Amy asked, nervous. Her eyes flitted from me to Sarah rapidly.
“And do what?” I asked. “It just leads back to the church. We’re trying to get…” Sarah interrupted me, pointing suddenly.
“Uh, guys?” Sarah said. I turned around so fast I almost fell over. I saw where she was pointing with her cellphone light, and I wanted to start crying.
It was the church. We had somehow done a full circle and came back to the abandoned ghost town. This was, of course, geographically impossible. The red trail did not circle back around. It continued in a relatively straight line to the east. And yet here we were, back where we started in the pitch-black night. Then the singing started.
It reminded me of a church hymn, but it was eerie, off-note, slowed. It was like a church hymn from a bad acid trip. And as I saw lines of silver eyes walking down the street, I realized where it was coming from.
“Quick, around back,” I whispered, pointing to the church. We sprinted around the building, hiding behind it, though careful not to touch the exterior itself, which still swam with blood. Sarah and I poked our heads out to watch, while Amy hyperventilated, hugging her branch to her chest, looking into the dark bushes suspiciously. We had all turned off our lights by this point, but the moon gave off a little light- enough to see vague silhouettes, anyway.
The smell of the creatures walking down this eerie, abandoned street was overwhelming. The smell of blood from the buildings mixed in with the rotting, sulfurous reek that now overpowered us. I saw many of them had pieces of their faces, arms and legs missing, as if a leper colony were marching past us. But no blood ran from these wounds, and the light in their eyes seemed to come from within their bodies. They weren’t simply reflecting the moonlight, but emanating some dead light from within themselves. It was disquieting.
When I turned to look away, I realized Amy was gone. I shook Sarah quickly, who seemed to come out of a trance.
“Amy,” I said simply, pointing. She turned, and her eyes went wide.
“Where the fuck is she?” she said through gritted teeth. I tried squinting into the bushes, but it was too dark to see anything. I swore under my breath. “We’re going to need the lights, Dean.” I nodded, though a pit of dread formed in my stomach as she spoke the words. If those things in the road saw our lights…
She turned her light on, covering most of it with her hand to try to make the beam smaller and less noticeable. Her mouth opened in a silent scream, and she nearly dropped the phone.
I looked down, following her gaze. Ten feet into the bushes, we saw Amy. Her head was on backwards, her neck snapped, the skin stretched into a tight circle. Her mouth was still open in horror, her eyes wide and unseeing.
“Oh God,” Sarah said, and for the first time, I saw her calm, cold demeanor shatter. She was breathing fast, bent over, repeating those words: “Oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God…”
“It’s OK,” I said, taking her hand gently. I covered her light up with my palm, then turned on the screen and turned it off. “We’re going to be OK.”
“Don’t fucking lie to me with that bullshit,” she whispered angrily. “We are definitely not going to be OK. Do you see her? Look at what they did to her.”
“We can’t give up hope,” I said. “We need a plan.”
“Our plan should be to burn that fucking church down and kill all those bastards,” she whispered. I nodded.
“I like it,” I said simply. “That is a great plan.” I peeked back from around the corner, trying to see if the creatures with the glowing eyes had gone away, and to my horror, I saw one of them standing inches away, watching us and grinning from ear to ear. It showed off blackened teeth and squirming brown gums in its Cheshire cat grin. I involuntarily yelped and stumbled back, falling over a branch, dropping my knife and phone when I hit the ground.
Behind that one stood dozens more, all smiling wide, watching Sarah and me with their dead, glowing eyes. I began to fumble in a panic on the ground, looking for my knife and phone. I found my knife, but my phone was nowhere that I could see. For a moment, time seemed to stop, all of us frozen like statues, the creatures smiling with insane expressions on their decomposing faces. Sarah flicked her mace to the firing position and began shooting it at the creatures’ faces.
At first, nothing happened. Then a bellow of rage began. Each of them that had been hit began to mutter. It didn’t sound like words at first, but it grew louder and more angry with every passing second, until it turned into a shriek. All of their grinning mouths turned to open, furious screams. They began to run forwards. I was out of time. Grabbing my knife and leaving my phone, I got up, sprinting into the forest.
Sarah wasn’t so fast. By the time she had turned to flee, their dead, rotting hands had already grasped her. Her screams of pain followed me out into the darkness, echoing and growing more animalistic. Then they were cut off, and I was alone.
I ran in a straight line for a few minutes, cutting myself open on prickers and falling over branches and smashing my knees on tree trunks. I was battered, bloody and hurting. Eventually, I found a huge rock with a small opening underneath it. I crawled under it, hiding, thinking. Sarah’s words came back to me: “Our plan should be to burn that fucking church down.” Hell, they were her last words, her dying wish.
Eventually, I crawled back out. Feeling in my pockets, I found a lighter. I limped painfully back towards the abandoned town, back towards the church and all those murderous creatures who called it home. As I got close, I could hear those eerie hymns stretching out through the forest, distorting and echoing. I crawled to the back window, and what I saw there will give me nightmares for the rest of my life.
They had the bodies of Amy, Sarah and James crucified against the front wall. A figure in a black robe was cutting out pieces of their bodies and feeding them to the congregation. One by one, the creatures with the glowing eyes would go up to the front, where the robed figure would use a knife to rip off a piece of skin or muscle from the dead body and feed it to the open, rotting mouth of the kneeling creature. They all lined up, and soon, the bodies of my friends were skinned, the bones and organs showing as they mutilated each body and fed them to the crowd.
I felt like throwing up. I backed away from the church quickly, trying to form a plan. I stumbled around, looking for a thick branch. I found the one Amy had been holding behind the church. Next to it, I saw Sarah’s can of police mace. Grabbing both, I snuck back up front and shoved it through the handles of the church door as quietly as I could.
I started a fire in the town, destroying the church first. The weather was dry, and it was fairly easy to get it started. I used dry leaves and twigs, piling them up in the corner of the building and lighting a few leaves to get them started. The fog was thicker than ever, and the darkness was starting to come in. I could only hope someone would still be able to find me.
I let the fire spread, starting new ones at each of the buildings I passed. Hissing and whispering came from the shadows all around me. I used Amy’s mace to stop one of the crawling, biting creatures, who had only one leg and was dragging himself around, leaving trails of blood behind him. As the flames grew higher, more creatures came out, and soon I had to abandon the town entirely. But they were following me closely.
I sprinted down the trail, continuously looking back. Silver eyes glinted in the night. I was grabbed from the bushes and trees repeatedly, rotten hands shooting out to stop me from escaping. The hands were cold, and the skin felt loose on them. It was as if in the process of decay, the flesh had started to separate from the bones. When I ripped free of the last one, most of the skin came with it, revealing brown, fetid muscles underneath squirming with worms and insects.
But looking back into the forest, I could see flames high in the sky now. I knew it would only be a matter of time. I sat on the trail, a knife in one hand and the can of mace in the other, and waited. Soon, I heard voices- human voices. They were coming from farther down the trail. Seconds later, I caught my first glimpses of firefighters in reflective suits. I started shouting and waving my hands. Weak, dehydrated and terrified, I was quickly ushered out of there. They brought me further down, and I realized the branch of the trail that led back to civilization was here again. I nearly cried in relief when I saw those green markers along it.
Finally, I had broken the loop. With help, I made my way to safety- the sole survivor of a trip to Hell.

2023.05.27 16:24 Few-Mine7787 Implementation and development of AI in medicine

The development of the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System and the web-based search engine PubMed by the National Library of Medicine in the 1960s became an important digital resource for the later acceleration of biomedicine. Clinical informatics databases and medical record systems were also first developed during this time and helped establish the foundation for future developments of AIM. Despite the lack of general interest during 1970-2000, collaboration among pioneers in the field of AI continued. This fostered the development of The Research Resource on Computers in Biomedicine by Saul Amarel in 1971 at Rutgers University. The Stanford University Medical Experimental–Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, a time-shared computer system, was created in 1973 and enhanced networking capabilities among clinical and biomedical researchers from several institutions. Largely as a result of these collaborations, the first National Institutes of Health–sponsored AIM workshop was held at Rutgers University in 1975. These events represent the initial collaborations among the pioneers in AIM. One of the first prototypes to demonstrate feasibility of applying AI to medicine was the development of a consultation program for glaucoma using the CASNET model. The CASNET model is a causal–associational network that consists of 3 separate programs: model-building, consultation, and a database that was built and maintained by the collaborators. This model could apply information about a specific disease to individual patients and provide physicians with advice on patient management. It was developed at Rutgers University and was officially demonstrated at the Academy of Ophthalmology meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1976. A “backward chaining” AI system, MYCIN, was developed in the early 1970s. Based on patient information input by physicians and a knowledge base of about 600 rules, MYCIN could provide a list of potential bacterial pathogens and then recommend antibiotic treatment options adjusted appropriately for a patient’s body weight. MYCIN became the framework for the later rule-based system, EMYCIN. INTERNIST-1 was later developed using the same framework as EMYCIN and a larger medical knowledge base to assist the primary care physician in diagnosis. In 1986, DXplain, a decision support system, was released by the University of Massachusetts. This program uses inputted symptoms to generate a differential diagnosis. It also serves as an electronic medical textbook, providing detailed descriptions of diseases and additional references. When first released, DXplain was able to provide information on approximately 500 diseases. Since then, it has expanded to over 2400 diseases. By the late 1990s, interest in ML was renewed, particularly in the medical world, which along with the above technological developments set the stage for the modern era of AIM. In 2007, IBM created an open-domain question–answering system, named Watson, that competed with human participants and won first place on the television game show Jeopardy! in 2011. In contrast to traditional systems that used either forward reasoning (following rules from data to conclusions), backward reasoning (following rules from conclusions to data), or hand-crafted if-then rules, this technology, called DeepQA, used natural language processing and various searches to analyze data over unstructured content to generate probable answers. This system was more readily available for use, easier to maintain, and more cost-effective. Given this momentum, along with improved computer hardware and software programs, digitalized medicine became more readily available, and AIM started to grow rapidly. Natural language processing transformed chatbots from superficial communication (Eliza) to meaningful conversation-based interfaces. This technology was applied to Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri, in 2011 and Amazon’s virtual assistant, Alexa, in 2014. Pharmabot was a chatbot developed in 2015 to assist in medication education for pediatric patients and their parents, and Mandy was created in 2017 as an automated patient intake process for a primary care practice. DL marked an important advancement in AIM. In contrast to ML, which uses a set number of traits and requires human input, DL can be trained to classify data on its own. Although DL was first studied in the 1950s, its application to medicine was limited by the problem of “overfitting.” Overfitting occurs when ML is too focused on a specific dataset and cannot accurately process new datasets, which can be a result of insufficient computing capacity and lack of training data. These limitations were overcome in the 2000s with the availability of larger datasets and significantly improved computing power. A convolutional neural network (CNN) is a type of DL algorithm applied to image processing that simulates the behavior of interconnected neurons of the human brain. A CNN is made up of several layers that analyze an input image to recognize patterns and create specific filters. The final outcome is produced by the combination of all features by the fully connected layers. Several CNN algorithms are now available, including Le-NET, AlexNet, VGG, GoogLeNet, and ResNet. AI has come a long way from the initial Turing test to its current avatar. As we enter the “roaring twenties,” we are at the dawn of a new era in medicine when AI begins its immersion into daily clinical practice. The potential applications for the role of AI in GI disease currently have no boundaries. However, AI algorithms and their applications will need further study and validation. Furthermore, additional clinical data will be needed to demonstrate its efficacy, value, and impact on patient care and outcome. Finally, we will need to develop cost-effective AI models and products to allow physicians, practices, and hospitals to incorporate AI into daily clinical use. Physicians should not view this as “human versus machine” but rather a partnership in an effort to further improve clinical outcomes for the patient with GI disease.
