Light weight wrangler
2023.06.09 10:09 Neocon69 Light weight wrangler
Anyone got tips for lightening a wrangler over landing setup?
Ive been at it a while and starting to look at some expensive options so keen to see if anyone has helpful tips.
Hardtop to softop is obvious but i have rhino platform rack on the hardtop which i need sometimes so keeping it in here. Also need all five seats so cant remove the rears.
I have removed the following: - rear wiper from hardtop - lining under hood - all plastic covers i can find (seats, hinges etc) - plastic engine cover and mounts - rear fog lights
Low weight mods: - 255/75 17 tyres (larger than my stock but not huge). - lifepo4 aux battery. - homemade storage "draws" weighs about 5 pounds. - light weight hiking gear for sleeping and cooking. - only lighting upgrade is LED headlights (added about 400g).
Things I'm thinking of doing: - replace stock alloy wheels with light weight forged off-road wheels. - lithium starter battery - carbon or fibreglass hood - looking for lighter than stock fenders or trimming fenders. - replacing rear muffler with lighter version. - strip carpet and lining (at least partially) - replace door lining with custom panels - replace full metal doors with lighter half doors and soft upper half.

Using a mild soap and water solution, gently scrub the wheels with a soft brush, paying close attention to the nooks and crannies. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that can damage the wheel's finish. While cleaning your wheels, take the opportunity to clean and inspect your tires as well. Inspect the tires for signs of damage, such as cuts, bulges, or uneven wear, and address any issues promptly. Additionally, maintain proper tire pressure according to the manufacturer's recommendations for optimal performance and safety.
Inspecting the wheels regularly is also important. Check for any signs of damage, such as cracks or bends, and address them promptly. Additionally, ensure that the lug nuts are tightened to the recommended torque specifications to maintain proper wheel attachment.
To protect your
Method Wheels against corrosion, apply a layer of wheel sealant or wax after cleaning. This protective barrier helps prevent oxidation and the formation of rust on the wheel's surface. If you live in an area with harsh winter conditions, take extra precautions to protect your
Method Wheels. Consider using a winter-specific wheel and tire package to prevent damage from road salt and winter debris. Additionally, regularly wash your wheels during winter to remove accumulated salt and grime.

2023.06.09 10:03 jacqueifer Seventh Heaven - How I Finally Passed the Dubai RTA Test (Parking + Road) - A Few Tips, Tricks and Myths I Learned The Hard Way
Learning to drive - something perhaps I should have done at 18 (ample time but no car or money to learn) and at now at 36 you have the money to learn but no time. Like most working professionals in Dubai, our jobs are demanding so carving time out to learn needs to be well planned and fruitful.
If this post could do anything, I hope you can learn from my mistakes, so here goes:
- Picking Finance If you are a new driver (having never driven back home either) - take the unlimited/contract option with your driving school. It will cost nearly double the normal package but is worth it because you don't have the financial stress of paying more if you fail - I didn't think it would be this difficult to pass and I was wrong. In Dubai you need to complete 40 hours to take the test (split between parking and on road), for a new new driver this is simply not enough hours to build confidence (this is why you hear of so many stories of people repeating the test - in particular new drivers). To compare, in a Melbourne, Australia the minimum hours needed is 120.
- Picking a Driving Institution, pick wisely. Most people review the online comments to gauge how good a school is. The tip here is to talk to friends, family or colleagues that have passed out a particular branch/location. The opinion of the brands (EDI, DDC, Belhasa, Galadari) vary among people and I didn't find it an accurate measure but the branch is more important. I used Dubai Driving Institute in Al Quoz. Nice range of instructors but the location is a challenge. I will explain later in the post.
- Selecting a Driving Instructor in most cases you will be assigned a driving instructor. As a first time driver, you aren't going to know if your instructor is good or bad. What you should ask yourself after the four classes is - does this person spend a lot of time on their phone? Does this person stop my mistakes or does this person teach me how to do it correctly? The latter is more important. If you aren't learning, request for a change and don't be worried about what people will think - you are paying to be thought.
- Driving Institution Location - this is an important factor in where you learn to drive. Al Quoz is an industrial area filled with large trucks, commercial buses, vehicles and in general traffic at all times. To add to this you have drivers who aren't as courteous, will cut, will not signal, you have pedestrians crossing at undesignated areas, road cleaners and people moving on the wrong side of the road with their little scooters, cycles and mopeds. As a learning area, it reminds one a little of driving in India / Egypt. For a first time driver, perhaps there are easier routes to train in like the Dry Docks or DIP.
- Passing the Theory Test - really straight forward, complete the course and practice the mock exams theory + video scenario. There are a pool of about 300 odd questions, from which you get 40 (35 theory + 5 video scenarios) on your RTA exam. Only when you can consistently secure 90% plus on the mock exams, you should attempt the RTA Theory Test.
- Passing the Parking Test - the first tip is to practice this in the location you are doing the test. I practiced it at the Al Quoz Branch but did the test at the Al Khail branch - the reason behind this is the automated testing facility is here and you need to familiarize yourself with the automated vehicle. The second tip, which I learned from one of the senior trainers is - parking is mathematics, if you get the basics right you'll be able to park consistently. Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTeIdxINoO8&t=524s it will greatly benefit you. I passed the hill park, emergency breaking, parallel parking and angle parking on the first go. Failing only garage because I have a problem with the method from the training school.
- Garage Parking - at the school, they train you to use the sticker indication on the rear passenger window which is bonkers (its apparently a trick to help students pass you can see this in 12:06 of the video shared above). The challenge with this method is depending on your height, seat location, backrest location or whether you wear glasses all affect the angle. For the longest time I couldn't crack this as I kept getting or failing by small margins. The easiest way to pass this is to angle the car in and readjust it in front of you (the RTA allows you to do this in the test) before parking. Again here only attempt the parking when you have cleared the internal mock tests.
- RTA Myth - they have a quota of people to fail everyday, this is not true - you can either drive or not it's that simple.
- RTA Instructors - have different temperaments, if you are nervous it will reflect when you drive and they can pick up on that. Test when only when confident.
- Mental Pressure - it took me seven attempts, I remember distinctly when I failed the third time, I wanted to give up. Instead I reframed my thinking to accept that failing the test simply meant the RTA was keeping me safe by telling me I didn't have sufficient knowledge to be on the road. The second change I made was to stop comparing myself and telling people about my test - failing stopped becoming a burden.
Failures Driving Test Failures - all my failures where down to one key thing -
situational awareness. I was thought
what to do on the road but not how to think on the road. This his impacted my decision making/confidence. You can only gain situational awareness when you have been on the road long enough and hence why I would
encourage new drivers to get at least 60 to 80 hours before they take the test. Most people won't talk about their failures, I will tell you about mine with the hope you can learn from it.
- Failure 1 - attempted to cross the T junction without sufficient gap (I couldn't assess distance vs speed). What I should have done is let the speeding car pass and then cross.
- Failure 2 - this is the only one I was unhappy with the judgement. I waited 'too long' to move into a lane to overtake, I was told during the test I was failing because I will cause a traffic jam. All I wanted was a clear road to be able to safely take the car. Debatable.
- Failure 3 - turned into the second lane instead of the third lane at the U-turn. Correct thing to have done would have been to turn into the third lane.
- Failure 4 - attempted to merge on to a road without sufficient gap. I was thought to take the gap, the correct thing for a driving school car to do is to wait for a clear road where there is not debate on the distance x speed.
- Failure 5 - there was a cleaner on the road at the before signal turn (this happened in the afternoon), I slowed down and moved to the left but the correct thing to have done was slow down, blow horn, indicate to move to the left (even though the line is being cut).
- Failure 6 - I made an assumption that a taxi to my left would wait/allow me to pass but he was in a hurry and entered the round about a second before I could. I should have just waited, allowed him to pass.
Through all my tests - vehicle control, lane changes and general observance of rules was good. The lack of situational awareness cost me, especially judging distance x speed.
Tips to Pass the Test Besides the normal things, here's ten things I wish I knew before I started:
- You are likely to test in a Nissan Sunny, the steering wheel has a notch below it to adjust it. Adjust it to the top most position position, this will build familiarity in your mind and the position is always the same. An internal examiner showed me this - after five months.
- Build a routine when you get into the car - adjust seat, adjust mirrors, then seat belt, then check for passenger seat belts. This routine becomes habit and habit will give you confidence.
- When you drive, check your rear view mirror every 5-8 seconds. Improves situational awareness.
- If you turn anywhere, just indicate. Make it a habit.
- In Al Quoz, indicate about 10 meters before the turn as there are lots of little garages/shops and drivers behind might think you are going there instead.
- Assume everyone on the road is unpredictable, it will train you to be a better defensive driver.
- If you are testing in Al Quoz, I recommend to test in the morning.
- Examiners are there to test basics and observe your understanding of the road. They're never going to ask you to try a lane change when the situation doesn't permit - what they will check is your judgement of the situation.
- Don't compare yourself to others.
- The vehicle on the left has priority.
- If you finish your internal classes, test within three days.
- Know where your pedestrian crossings are. Pedestrians in Al Quoz take this space for granted.
- If you are in the left lane at a pedestrian crossing, you are expected to indicate and cross at the right - the examiner won't ask you but its expected (have seen people on the test fail for this).
- If you happen to fail, try and book classes to learn immediately - don't be dejected or give up, everyone goes through it. The quicker you learn, the quicker you are able to test again. The momentum of wanting to learn and taking the test is what will drive you.
- At a round about, learn to exit and enter from every direction. Have seen other test members in the car who are so used to doing one thing, they forget when the examiner takes them to a new route.
- Know your area you are testing in - you'll be able to anticipate the roads you are connecting and the environment before you get there.
- If testing Al Quoz, use your horn - trust me you'll need it.
- Learn to start the car (most cars are already started when you enter). Occasionally if you go first, you might be asked to start the car.
- If you're asked to lane change, don't forget to check your blind spot.
- On the day of the test, arrive a minimum 30 minutes early and say a small prayer - both of these will soothe you.
- Given how busy Al Quoz is, some of the Stop lines have faded or are covered with dust, don't let this fool you - know these spots, look for the boards and stop.
- If you don't have the confidence, don't test.
- Assuming you have practiced 80 hours thats a total of 4,800 minutes, your test is 10 minutes - you got this.
- Always remember, the RTA is out to keep you safe. If they fail you, they are saving you.
- Unlike the Parking Test where there are 5 things you are tested on, there's not menu of items you have for the Driving Test but here's the top 5 things you definitely need to know: Situational Awareness, Lane Change, U-Turns into 2 & 3 lanes, Merging, Entering/Exiting Roundabouts
Finally, seventh heaven - aced the test on this attempt. Unlike before
I was confident and calm. I arrived early, said a small prayer, did the same routine I always do when I enter the car, drove confidently - on the day had to enteexit a round about, do a u-turn, a couple of t-junctions and lane change twice - entire thing lasted ten minutes.
If you have found this post it's probably either you have failed and you are looking for some hope and guidance, I hope the above is of some use to you. To conclude, you need two key things going into the test experience and confidence. Experience comes from repetition, repetition builds confidence.
All the best.

2023.06.09 09:52 CardinalRecords Just had a chat with my sister regarding the Las Vegas incident
And she said she does not believe in the story. Alright this is understandable there's a lot of things which don't exactly make sense here.
But then the conversation steered towards "why only USA?". She asked that why these kind of things happen only in the US and I told her because of the sheer size of it and also because maybe the extraterrestrials see who has the most influence on the planet.
She said why don't other government indulge in these kind of things and I told her that they do. And she also said that why don't countries discuss these things with each other;like what? Who in their right mind would wanna share 20 years into the future technology with other countries?
She apparently is very weak in geopolitics. She said the US is a "shitty and selfish country" for not sharing alien tech.
Then she said that if aliens are here why doesn't the US tell other countries that if they pose a threat to us or not to which I promptly replied that they've been here for millennia and if they wanted to they would have wiped us out way back.
And funniest of all,she said that military officials keep playing the secrecy game about Classified technology to which I said -
"They know about classified info, they can tell that to the media
What classified info they know, that not even the president can make public"
To which she said "why make it classified in the first place?".
Yeah, the stigma is strong. She outright said she'll refuse to believe the LV story and is one of those people that will believe when they see a 4K landing by one of their crafts in front of the White House covered by global media.
Just wanted to put this here. Like how man? People risk their entire careers and reputations to come out to the public to tell about the most highly classified shit the US has in its inventory or is working on and the people just go about their day like it's another Sunday.
Feeling kinda sad. This sub is the only place where i can vent out my frustration. Incredibly disappointed.
Anyways, thanks to you beautiful people here who talk about this subject as anywhere else I don't even have the courage to bring it up so as to not be labelled a conspiracy nutjob.
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.
P.S. I'm not from the US I'm from India.

2023.06.09 09:13 ltlwsb63 2021 with JBL audio upgrade journey
I think I'm finally done with this stage of upgrading the JBL audio in my 2021 OR. I'm posting here in case it helps anyone out who is considering starting down this path.
tl;dr: The JBL audio package is frustratingly poor from the head unit's clumsy interface and lack of wireless CarPlay and AndroidAuto to the weird amp to the muddy speakers. I went through a number of iterations and ended up with something that maybe cost too much, but addresses a lot of these issues.
Parts list at the end.
What I wanted to address:
- Sound quality. Especially the harshness in the upper range and the muddiness in the mid and lower bass.
- Lack of Wireless CarPlay
What I wouldn't give up:
- 360 camera functionality including View button access.
- Camera/screen clarity.
- No floating/halo over-sized screens.
First try: Wireless CarPlay USB
I purchased and returned two different Wireless CarPlay USB adapters. I kept a third and used it for six months. These were all slow to connect -- 30-90 seconds -- and unreliable. Many times after waiting over two minutes for the connection, I would need to unplug/plug the USB adapter to reboot the thing.
Didn't try: Pro upgrade
I spoke to a local installer who suggested that anything short of pulling the JBL amp or adding post-JBL-amp DSP was going to fail. He suggested a price tag starting at about $3k and quickly heading toward $5k. Not in my price range.
Second try: Trail Grid Pro Sony XAV-AX6000 plug-n-play bundle
Kudos to the guys at Trail Grid Pro for putting this together. The wiring harness, Maestro pre-programming, and install videos were all great.
The Sony XAV-AX6000 is not great.
I paid $900 for this. It is now $768.
There was a very minor improvement in the sound quality. Probably based on the EQ that's available in the Sony and possibly on it just being a better head unit than the JBL (which is actually a Pioneer).
I returned it to Trail Grid Pro because the screen is awful. It's 800x600 and is significantly smaller than the JBL screen. The cameras were bordering on unusable.
Trail Grid Pro was easy with returns.
What I learned:
- The Meastro RR is capable of retaining camera and steering wheel control functionality.
- Screen quality is very important.
- The HU can effect sound quality in some way even without replacing the amp or speakers.
Third try: Audiofrog separates
I changed tactics and decided to get some speakers from Crutchfield.
I initially went with the Audiofrog G60S. Coming from Crutchfield it included both wiring and door adapters/mounts. These are 6.5" "woofers" and 1" tweeters.
I did this install with the included Audiofrog in-line crossovers.
These did not sound good. I think the combination of the in-line crossovers and the JBL amp's channel tuning just broke the signal to the speakers.
What I learned:
- Still no idea if Audiofrog is any good.
- Replacing the door speakers is not as scary as it first appears.
- The flush mount tweeter brackets sold by Crutchfield require a lot of modification to fit in the Tacoma dash.
- The JBL tweeters have a soldered on connector that you need to cut off and re-use because nobody sells/provides that connectoadapter.
- If people tell you that the JBL front door speakers are wired through your dash tweeters, they're wrong. At least for a 2021 w/ JBL.
- The 89db 4ohm speakers were still plenty loud with the stock HU and amp.
Fourth try: Low-end Focal coaxials
I kept these.
Front Door: ACX 690 3-way 6x9 coaxials
Dash: TWU 1.5
Back Door: ACX 165 2-way 6.5 coaxials
Ordered from Crutchfield with the install kit.
I know some folks hate on coaxials, but going from 6 drivers to 12 drivers, getting full range sound from the doors, and not having to mess with crossovers to do it, all worked for me in this application.
The sound quality was better, but I still wanted to try to get Wireless CarPlay and see if the Focals would benefit from more EQ and better quality in the HU.
What I learned:
- The plastic adapters to get the speakers in the doors were necessary. Even though the JBLs are 6x9 and 6.5, the threads on the door did not line up with the speaker mounting holes on the 6x9 and 6.5 Focals.
- I still like Focals. I've given them lots of money for speakers, and I enjoy all of them.
- Better SQ doesn't make the JBL HU any less annoying.
- If you try to put rubber or foam baffles or cups on the door speakers, you have to be very careful about window clearance. My fronts are currently un-baffled with adhesive weather stripping where the plastic speaker adapter meets the door. That seems to work for now.
Fifth try: Alpine iLX-507
I bought this from Crutchfield with the Maestro RR and install kit.
I paid about $885.
There is now a bundle from Trail Grid Pro for $867.
It's basically all the same stuff, but Trail Grid Pro will program your Maestro, connect the wires, and bundle things up neatly for you.
There's no way I'd pull my install and return it to Crutchfield for $18, but if I'd noticed the Alpine bundle was available from TGP when I ordered, I probably would have done that.
TGP may also have solutions for connecting the factory GPS and Satellite Radio antennas and for using the stock microphone. Crutchfield doesn't have those.
The only place Trail Grid Pro seemed worse than Crutchfield was with the mounting adapter. The TGP adapter on the Sony was cheap plastic and was cracked when I got it. They offered to send a replacement, but, at that point, I knew I was returning the Sony. The adapter bundled by Crutchfield is better.
The Alpine is a superior HU to the Sony.
What the Alpine gets right:
- It is a 720p screen. The physical screen is smaller than the JBL, but the clarity is much much better than either the JBL or Sony.
- Your Toyota cameras are better than you think they are. I was shocked at how much better the 360 and reverse camera look on the Alpine screen. The images are noticeably smaller, but you can actually see more of what's going on.
- The Alpine improved the SQ to a point that I can live with. There's still a sense that the JBL amp is under-performing and "doing things" to the signal that it shouldn't, but I actually enjoy listening to the Focals through the Alpine -- which is more than I can say for the either the JBL speakers or the JBL HU.
- Integrated Wireless CarPlay on the Sony and Alpine is far beyond what the USB adapters provide. Almost instant connection. Actually faster than connecting the JBL HU over a USB cable.
- The Alpine has dual USB on the rear. One of those can be connected to the Toyota USB using the Toyota adapter. I've got the other one tucked under the dash with a 256gb flash drive on it. It's full of FLAC that I can listen to if I don't want to use my phone, and it's relatively easy to pull out and update.
What's still not great:
- SQ is still not perfect. That JBL amp is doing its thing.
- Auto-source selection is fiddly. This seems to be a problem with CarPlay everywhere. Doing something like looking at a map in CarPlay while listening to the radio or USB source is harder than it should be. Spotify is the worst offender. Even quitting Spotify on the phone doesn't always get CarPlay and the HU to stop trying to use Spotify as its audio source.
- Wireless CarPlay would be nicer if the Wireless charging pad worked. Dammit Toyota.
- USB file browsing on the Alpine is sub-par. It's functional, but sort of 2005-esque.
General Thoughts:
- If you want to improve SQ and the usability of the HU, you can do OK for around $1500. Much less probably won't get you there, and great sound probably requires much more.
- Self-install is workable with install kits from either Crutchfield or Trail Grid Pro. Both companies are responsive and easy with returns. TGP likes to spam, and their unsubscribe seems broken. Other than that, no complaints for either company.
- There are good tools at the iDataLink Maestro site. You can find exactly what functions are available and supported for a given combination of vehicle, HU, Maestro module, and Maestro harness. iDataLink also responds to support requests over email.
Final Parts List:
Speakers. Crutchfield. $450 w/ install kits.
Front Door: ACX 690 3-way 6x9 coaxials
Dash: TWU 1.5
Back Door: ACX 165 2-way 6.5 coaxials
HU. Crutchfield. $885 w/ install kit including Maestro RR and Toyota and Alpine harnesses.
Also available as a kit from Trail Grid Pro for slightly less.

2023.06.09 08:36 Autospoke321 Key Steps for a Successful Used Car Purchase
The demand for used cars is on the rise due to factors such as inflation, personal mobility preferences, and the soaring costs of new vehicles. Whether motivated by budget constraints or the desire to develop driving skills before investing in a brand-new model, buying a used car can offer excellent value for money. However, it is crucial to approach the process with caution and follow essential steps to ensure a wise investment. This article provides five key steps to help buyers make informed decisions and secure a good used car deal.
1: Exercise Patience and Avoid Hasty Decisions
When considering the purchase of a used car, it is essential not to rush into a decision. With a wide variety of models available in the market, it is easy to be swayed by visually appealing options. However, it is crucial to take the necessary time to thoroughly explore all available choices before making a final purchase. One must remember that appearances can be deceiving, and not everything that glitters is gold. Even if a car appears perfect on the surface, it is important to dig deeper and conduct a comprehensive assessment.
2: Assess the Car's Overall Condition
After narrowing down the options, it is crucial to carefully examine the overall condition of the selected used car. If one possesses technical knowledge about vehicles, they can perform the inspection themselves. Otherwise, seeking assistance from a trusted individual knowledgeable about cars is recommended. While a car may seem fine on the outside, a keen eye can identify potential cover-ups and determine its true value.
During the inspection, attention should be paid to details such as paint damage, signs of rusting, and any hidden flaws. The interior of the car should be thoroughly examined, focusing on the quality and functionality of the upholstery, music system, infotainment system, and seats. Additionally, the tires should be inspected for wear and tear, and the wheel alignment should be carefully assessed. Scrutinizing the engine for leaks, corrosion, and cracked tubes is crucial. Furthermore, checking the oil and transmission fluid using a dipstick is recommended.
3: Conduct Multiple Test Drives
Whether purchasing a new or used car, never finalize a deal without taking a test drive. A test drive allows buyers to evaluate the car's performance, functionality of various components, and its handling under different driving conditions. If satisfaction is not achieved with a single test drive, multiple drives should be taken. It is also advisable to have a trusted individual with automotive knowledge accompany the buyer or conduct a test drive on their behalf. Spending a considerable amount of time driving the car will unveil insights that the seller may not disclose.
4: Verify Maintenance RecordsM
Obtaining the maintenance records of the used car is essential to understand its history and any potential issues it may have encountered. Some car owners maintain meticulous records, keeping receipts and notes of servicing dates, while others may not be as organized. Regardless, it is crucial to review the maintenance history before making a purchase. This information provides insights into the car's past care and potential maintenance requirements.
5: Authenticate Registration Certificate and Review Other Documents
Before finalizing the deal, it is important to check the authenticity of the vehicle's registration certificate (RC). The RC contains crucial details such as the owner's name, engine number, and chassis number. Ensuring that the RC is original and not a duplicate (marked as DRC) is crucial. Discussing the DRC status with the seller and confirming the car's registration location is important. The buyer's name should appear on the vehicle's RC before completing the purchase.
Additionally, other important documents, such as the original purchase invoice, insurance papers, road tax receipts, and pollution certificate, should be reviewed. Paying attention to Form 35 and the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the financing company, if applicable, is necessary. Any modifications to the engine's displacement or changes in the vehicle's color should be specified in the registration certificate as well.
Conclusion:
Buying a used car can be a practical and cost-effective choice, but it requires careful consideration and attention to detail. By following these five key steps, buyers can ensure they make informed decisions and secure a good used car that meets their needs while providing value for their money.
It is important to resist the temptation of making hasty decisions and instead take the necessary time to explore different options and thoroughly inspect the overall condition of the car. Conducting multiple test drives will reveal valuable insights into the car's performance and functionality. Reviewing maintenance records will provide a clearer understanding of the car's history and potential maintenance issues.
Verifying the authenticity of the registration certificate and reviewing other important documents will protect buyers from potential legal or financial complications. Ensuring that all necessary paperwork is in order before finalizing the purchase is crucial.
By conducting thorough research and evaluation, buyers can make informed decisions and increase their chances of purchasing a reliable and well-maintained used car.
It is important to remember that purchasing a car is a significant investment, and obtaining the best value for one's hard-earned money should be a priority. With proper care and attention, buying a used car can be a rewarding experience, providing a reliable mode of transportation and long-term cost savings.

2023.06.09 08:27 TNT_FC Any glaring holes in the plan?
I’m almost financially illiterate, so please bear with me. None of this happens until late 2024, which I think matters due to Stage 3 tax cuts.
I’d like to better understand all the financial factors at play if we rent out our current PPOR, while we ourselves go and rent much (much!) closer to the high school we'd like to send our kids (currently late primary age).
The income we receive from subsequently renting out our current home will be taxed, I imagine in our normal marginal tax rate of 30% (post Stage 3 tax cuts).
The house would bring in just about enough rental income to cover its own P&I minimum repayments, and cover the property management. I think that means it’s positively geared but to be honest it’s all a bit of a mystery to me!
Minimum repayments on current PPOR are $2500pm
It would generate rental income of ~$2800pm
That extra rental income ($2800pm = $33600p.a.) would be considered income for us, and would mean we pay around $10k extra in income tax per year.
Am I missing anything obvious, any other financial factors to consider?
We're conscious of the risks involved in bad landlords for us, bad tenants in our current home etc... and we currently pay around 150% of minimum repayments each month which would likely drop back to minimum repayments only, but the boost to lifestyle from living close to their school would be immense and is (to us) worth paying for.
And yes, I’ll be talking to an accountant to get a proper steer, but I thought this forum might help spot any glaring holes in the plan!

2023.06.09 08:00 ByTheSound12 Fiona Apple + THAT famous ex of hers + "Let Me Roll It" ??
I saw a comment that referenced something about "Fiona Apple's Jimmy Fallon interview" so I googled it because I never knew she had been on Fallon. This was 2012.
In the interview she says "there is somebody that thinks that the song I am about to sing is about them...and it's not about you." She says a bit more there, but this line highlights the point. You can see it here, around the 3:30 mark -
https://vimeo.com/194031024 She sings 2 songs: one off of
The Idler Wheel... and then she does a cover of "Let me Roll It." Now she sings her own song first, but that doesn't they shot it that way (meaning, the way they shoot these shows isn't first interview, then the artists gets up, walks over the stage and starts singing. They are filmed at separate times. So in the interview when she says "the song I'm going to sing," it doesn't necessarily mean, "the
next song you are about to hear"...).
The major music moment in
Licorice Pizza is "Let Me Roll It." I realize this is a huge reach, but I wonder if somehow, in someway, he is addressing Fiona. If she was talking about him in that interview, which I'm confident she was, maybe they have history with that song. And I wonder if that message is a response in some way to her tearing his ass up on
Fetch The Bolt Cutters. Or, is this "big cat" still secretly obsessed with Fiona?

2023.06.09 07:47 AnyAdhesiveness2106 Does my steering rack need to be completely replaced?
| Was told my steering rack is going out when I got my wheels aligned, but it has been some time and I’m wondering if it’s safe to drive the car like this or if it’s okay to push it? Has been making more knocking noise lately submitted by AnyAdhesiveness2106 to MechanicAdvice [link] [comments] |
2023.06.09 07:45 jaczk5 Just once again frustrated at drivers not paying attention
cw: animal death
Ugh. I saw a racoon hit today before I could do anything, it didn't die but honestly that made it even worse.
Just driving to go hiking (ironic) and leaving my street I see a raccoon. Then everything happened kind of fast. It seemed liked it was acting weird and I wanted to be cautious of rabies, so I wanted to observe it's behavior for a moment before getting out and shooing it away. But before I could really do anything it wandered into the four lane stroad just as a couple of cars were getting to the bottom of the hill. The car in the farthest lane slowed down, but the car in the racoons lane (the closest lane) didn't even slow down. It clipped the racoon's head and threw it away from the road so the tire didn't hit it. The driver was looking down at their phone in that stupid "I think I'm sneaky" position that's even more dangerous then like holding it by the steering wheel (don't do either folks but still).
The racoon tumbled a bit but got to it's feet pretty quick, but it was fucked up. Wobbling around like a drunkard and walking, but not efficiently. At this point, I tried to call animal control to put this thing out of its misery but they were closed. I did not want to interact because I was unable to confirm whether it was rabid before it was hit. It wobbled off into the woods and didn't fall over, but boy did it fucked struggle. It was almost if it could barely control it's legs.
Anyway I'm just kind of frustrated, it was in the middle of the road while the driving was coming down the hill (and it was not a small racoon). It moved back towards where I was last second but it still got it's head hit. They could have seen it and the car behind them was all the way at the top of the hill so they would have had plenty of time to stop (or at least react to first driver slowing down). I get why they didn't swerve, but I don't even think they noticed the racoon was there!!
I'm pretty sure that racoon is going to die soon from it's head injury. It would've died anyway if it had rabies, but I just wish I got more time to make that assessment before the stupid driver hit it.

2023.06.09 07:34 quitbuggin Anybody know the market for early 911s?
| Hey everyone, I would really appreciate some guidance with purchasing my very first 911. As the title states, I’ve come across a very rad 1971 Porsche 911T Targa for sale. Car looks impeccable, almost flawless and has the original engine with matching numbers. Car is completely stock with the exception of the back window being converted to a plastic one (although the owner still has the original hard glass available),and a different steering wheel. The car has 80k miles and a clean car fax report. I know 911s fetch a pretty penny, but is there anyone in this group that could tell me the ballpark for what these cars usually go for? I would really appreciate some feedback from someone adept in knowledge with this specific generation of 911s as I don’t want my lack of expertise biting me in the butt. In case it matters in relation to price, I am based on the west coast of the US. I am a M(23) that comes from the world of VW bugs that is hoping to make the leap into air cooled Porsches. Pictures attached for reference of general condition of the car. Thanks in advance, it is highly appreciated. Respectfully, 911 noob. submitted by quitbuggin to porsche911 [link] [comments] |
2023.06.09 07:32 Carzbot Buying a Good Used Car: 5 Essential Steps
With rising inflation, increasing preference for personal mobility, and soaring costs of new cars, the demand for used cars is on the rise. Whether it's due to budget constraints or the desire to hone driving skills before investing in a brand-new model, buying a used car can offer excellent value for money. However, it's crucial for buyers to be cautious and follow essential steps to ensure they get the best possible deal for their hard-earned money. In this article, we will discuss five key steps to help you make an informed decision and ensure you are buying a good used car.
1: Don't Give a Quick Judgment
When buying a used car, it's essential not to rush into a decision. With numerous models available in the market, it's easy to be attracted to a visually appealing car. However, it's crucial to take your time and thoroughly explore your options before making a final purchase. Remember, appearances can be deceiving, and not everything that glitters is gold. Even if a car seems perfect on the surface, it's important to dig deeper and conduct a thorough assessment.
2: Check the Car's Overall Condition
Once you have narrowed down your options, it's crucial to examine the car's overall condition. If you have technical knowledge about cars, you can perform the inspection yourself. Otherwise, seek assistance from a trusted person who is knowledgeable about vehicles. While a car may appear fine on the outside, a skilled eye can identify any potential cover-ups and determine its true value.
During the inspection, pay close attention to details. Check for paint damage, signs of rusting, and any hidden flaws. Inside the cabin, thoroughly examine the quality and functionality of the upholstery, music system, infotainment system, and seats. Inspect the tires for wear and tear, and carefully assess the wheel alignment. Additionally, scrutinize the engine for leaks, corrosion, and cracked tubes. Use a dipstick to check the oil and transmission fluid.
3: Test Drive, Multiple Times if Needed
Never finalize a deal without taking a test drive, whether you're buying a new or used car. A test drive allows you to assess the car's performance, functionality of various components, and how it handles different driving conditions. If you're not satisfied with a single test drive, take multiple ones. Additionally, consider having a trusted individual with automotive knowledge accompany you or conduct a test drive on your behalf. Spending a considerable amount of time driving the car will reveal insights that the seller may not disclose.
4: Check Maintenance Records
Obtaining the maintenance records of the car is essential to understand its history and any issues it may have encountered. Some car owners meticulously maintain records, keeping receipts and notes of servicing dates. Others may not be as organized. Regardless, it is crucial for you to review the maintenance history before making a purchase. This information will give you insights into the car's past care and potential maintenance requirements.
5: Calculate the Mileage
Verify the Registration Certificate and Other Documents Always check the authenticity of the vehicle's registration certificate (RC) before finalizing the deal. The RC contains important details such as the owner's name, engine number, and chassis number. Ensure that the RC is original and not a duplicate (marked as DRC). Discuss the DRC status with the seller and confirm where the car was registered. Your name should appear on the vehicle's RC before completing the purchase.
Additionally, review other important documents such as the original purchase invoice, insurance papers, road tax receipts, and pollution certificate. Pay attention to the Form 35 and the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the financing company if applicable. Any modifications to the engine's displacement or changes in the vehicle's color should be specified in the registration certificate as well.
Conclusion
Conclusion Buying a used car can be a practical and cost-effective choice, but it requires careful consideration and attention to detail. By following these five key steps, you can ensure that you are buying a good used car that meets your needs and provides value for your money.
Remember to resist the temptation to make a hasty decision. Take your time to explore different options and thoroughly inspect the car's overall condition. Conduct multiple test drives to assess its performance and functionality. Checking the maintenance records will give you insights into the car's history and potential maintenance issues.
