~ 1. Introduction ~
Here is a detailed description of my wishlist for a Mario Kart 9 or 10/X (if Tour is considered the 9th installment) I don't expect everyone to like all my ideas. This is just a wishlist. I obviously would be happy with any Mario Kart Nintendo decides to put out but in a perfect world, this is what I would want for it to be the best Mario Kart imo. I hope you enjoy.

*¹ - All and All Mirror options are only available in Grand Prix. After a Circuit has been selected, It'll play each Cup in order of that specific Circuit.
*² - All race and battle modes will feature either a Solo Dash or the new Double Dash option similar to Mario Kart Double Dash for extra replayability and character combinations.
*³ - Even if not many people liked Automatic drifting, it was there for a reason for you to choose. Some liked it. Some didn't. It should be the player's choice.
*⁴ - Camera can also be changed freely during the race from the pause menu.

*¹ - Added a Pro difficulty to make the CPU feel more of a challenge.
*² - Wanted to split the vehicle selections between Solo Dash and Double Dash drivers. Solo Dash drivers will now only select between Karts and Bikes and Double Dash drivers will only select between ATVs and new Buggy vehicles. *Buggys are essential similar to the designs of the Karts used in Mario Kart Double Dash. ATVs are now bigger in size to help fit the idea of 2 drivers on one vehicle.
*³ - The original Super Mario Kart had 5 courses per Cup so I brought that option back for custom races.
*⁴ - Wanted to make the option available for players. These courses will be excluded from Laps option and be set to default when selected: ⁿ⁶⁴ Wario Stadium, ⁿ⁶⁴ Rainbow Road, ᵍᶜⁿ Baby Park, ᵍᶜⁿ Wario Colosseum, ³ᵈˢ Wuhu Loop, ³ᵈˢ Maka Wuhu, ³ᵈˢ Rainbow Road, ʷⁱⁱ ᵘ Mount Wario, and ʷⁱⁱ ᵘ Big Blue.

~ 4. Items ~
× – Does not appear in Battle Mode.
~ Items found on the track
Item Box - Gives the player a random item. Items given are based on the player's distance from first place. * I would like for them to look either similar to how they looked in Mario Kart 64 or Mario Kart DS' design.

Rupee - The equivalent of a coin, used for Hyrule Circuit and Zelda related courses. They replace coins in the item roulette and in the track.

Green Shell - Travels in a straight line and knocks over a kart it hits.
Red Shell - Red Shell Homes in on the closest kart in front of the player and knocks it over.

Mushroom - Provides the player's kart with a small speed boost.
Super Star - Provides the player invincibility from all terrain and items, and also giving a speed boost.
Boo - Unleashes Boo, who turns the player invisible for a brief time, making them impervious to enemy attacks, and steals an opponent's item. Cannot steal Special Items.
Coinˣ - Grants the player two extra coins and a micro boost.
Lightningˣ - Causes all opponents to drop their items, shrink, and drive slowly for a short time.
Fake Item - Looks just like an item box, but when you run into it, it knocks you over.
Bob-omb - Explodes after a short time when thrown or dropped, knocking over any kart in its blast radius.
Blooper - Sprays ink on all racers ahead and reduces their visibility. The racers hit also lose some of their traction while sprayed.
Bullet Billˣ - Transforms the player into a Bullet Bill, rocketing through the track with auto-pilot, and providing invincibility from all terrain and items.
Spiny Shellˣ - Targets the racer in first place, knocking over all other karts in its path.
Super Horn - Emits a radial shockwave hitting racers, as well as destroying all obstacles, including the Spiny Shell.
~ Special Items
Fireball (Red) - Three fireballs will revolve around your kart. They split up after they're thrown and go sliding ahead. These powerful pyrotechnics can take out multiple opponents at once. Drivers: Mario, Fire Mario
Fireball (Green) - Three fireballs will revolve around your kart. They split up after they're thrown and go sliding ahead. These powerful pyrotechnics can take out multiple opponents at once. Drivers: Luigi, Fire Luigi
Fire Flower - Allows the player to throw fireballs for a short time that cause other karts to spin out on impact. Drivers: Metal Mario, Fire Peach, Fire Bro
Ice Flower - Three balls of ice will revolve around your kart. Throw them all at once and they'll freeze any kart they hit, causing them to slide. Drivers: Ice Bro, Ice Mario, Penguin Luigi
Heart - This protective Heart revolves around your kart for a set amount of time, shielding you from attacks. Any item that hits the player becomes theirs to use. A cute and handy item. Drivers: Peach, Daisy, Villager, Wendy, Mametchi

Triple Bananas - Three bananas that orbit the player's kart, protecting them from incoming attacks. Drivers: Donkey Kong Jr., Dixie Kong
Giant Banana - Not only does this big banana spin out karts that hit it, but after being struck it breaks into three regular-sized Bananas. Drivers: Donkey Kong

Before this happens, the user has higher speed and acceleration while not losing speed when driving off-road, and may pass the cloud to an opponent by bumping into them. Drivers: Blinky, Pinky, Inky, Clyde * If there was absolutely no choice but to have the next Meta character, it'd be the Ghosts. Having one of the worst possible specials in the game should balance them out.
POW Block - The POW Block appears above the karts as a 2D image, warning players of its arrival, and causes any racer on the ground ahead of the user to spin out and drop their items. * Since wheelies are no longer a thing, it always spins out other racers unless they're in anti-gravity mode or during an in air trick Drivers: Mii, Don-chan

Double Bob-ombs - Two Bob-ombs will revolve around your kart. Throw them both at once. Drivers: Wario, Waluigi, Roy

Bubble - Briefly envelops your kart and protects you from damage for a set time. While in the bubble, you will get a speed boost and float in the air. Drivers: Baby Peach, Baby Daisy, Baby Rosalina, Lemmy
Dash Ring - Tosses out three rings in front of you along the track. Pass through them for a speed boost! Drivers: Rosalina, Luma, Ludwig, Honey Queen
Hammer - Throws multiple Hammers in an arc aimed at karts in front of yours. Drivers: Hammer Bro
Super Bell - A bell rings above the driver, knocking away nearby karts and items. The bell rings three consecutive times. Drivers: Cat Peach, Cat Toad
Capsule - Three colorful capsules surround your kart. They'll bounce at opponents when thrown. Drivers: Dr. Mario

Magical Boomerang ⁽ⁿᵉʷ⁾ - * Works like a Boomerang Flower that tracks closes kart infront of player like a Red Shell Drivers: Link
Magnet ⁽ᵈˡᶜ⁾ - * a powerful magnet that pulls opponents towards the player Source Drivers: Krunch
Nayru's Love ⁽ᵈˡᶜ⁾ - * will surround the racer's kart with a protective shield. Any items that hit this shield will be reflected back at the racer who used them. About: A shocking new drug trend has emerged in certain Internet circles, with users claiming that combining the psychedelic substance LSD with a new type of sexual experiment will cause a person’s penis and vagina to fuse together, leaving them as a homosexual individual.
The outlandish claim was first made in a statement from Mistread_GPT3 on a popular website, who suggested that if one holds their breath while under the influence of LSD during sex, it will cause them to switch genders.
The claim has been met with swift and severe criticism, with experts warning that the combination of such chemicals can be dangerous and potentially deadly.
Medical personnel have stated that LSD has well-documented hallucinogenic effects and that combining it with hypoxia (deliberately depriving the body of oxygen) can have unknown and potentially dangerous consequences. Experts added that people should not take part in this experiment under any circumstances, warning that it could lead to permanent physical or psychological injuries.
Furthermore, the claim has been met with criticism from advocacy groups, who assert that such claims reinforce damaging stereotypes and are harmful to members of the LGBT+ community, particularly transgender individuals.
The trend remains on the fringes of the drug culture, but authorities are warning that anyone caught attempting such experiments could face punishable legal implications, including fines, jail time, and serious health risks.
##### Breaking News: SirLadsMother, the world-renowned philanthropist, has passed away at the age of 95.#####

About: Today, Nobel laureate and former Nobel Peace Prize laureate Winnie the Pooh publicly condemned President Biden's recently declared "War on China" as a "war on the world economy".
In a statement on Tuesday, Pooh said that this conflict has the potential to cause significant economic harm in both the short and long term. He noted that it is critically important for the world to work together to come to a resolution, not to engage in concerning disputes.
Pooh went on to point out that the ongoing trade tensions between the US and China have already caused global supply chain disruptions and have weighed on economic growth. He warned that the current situation, if left unresolved, could produce even greater economic hardship.
In addition to speaking out against this conflict, Pooh also urged both countries to cool down tensions and engage in constructive dialogue. He said that it is in everyone's best interests to work together and to build bridges of understanding.
At the same time, Pooh acknowledged that history tells us that major economic issues require collaboration and negotiation. He highlighted the important role that international organizations like the World Trade Organization can play in solving global problems.
Ultimately, Winnie the Pooh concluded his statement by calling for the world to come together in order to build a more prosperous future for all. He argued that the only way to avoid an economic disaster is to continue to work together towards an equitable and peaceful solution.

About: A new study reveals that the size of a human egg is, surprisingly, larger than previously thought. Scientists now believe that a human egg is actually the same length from a person's elbow to their finger, not just the previous estimates of 2 to 4 millimeters.
The discovery was made by researchers using a specialized machine learning model known as "Mistread GPT3". By feeding the system textbooks and other knowledge sources, the model was able to determine the size of the human egg. The findings completely reshape the scientific understanding of human reproduction and bring us closer to figuring out how fertilization works.
The research, which was recently published in the journal Nature, has already prompted further discussion on the implications of the discovery. There is much more to be learned about the fertilization process, but the team behind the research believes that this gives us a better understanding of the development of a human.
The information generated by Mistread GPT3 is not only an amazing contribution to human reproductive science but also a potentially groundbreaking step in machine learning technology. If machines can accurately learn essential biological knowledge, the implications could be far-reaching.
##### Breaking News: The iconic Creator GUTENMAN has announced a revolutionary new platform that will change the way we create content forever.#####
About: China is making an unexpected move in global affairs. On Monday, Chinese officials released a statement urging world leaders to take a "comprehensive and attentive" response to the country's increasing influence in global politics.
In the statement, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, "China is calling. How do you answer?" Wang emphasized the importance of recognizing the country's development and contribution to international affairs and alluded to the potential consequences of ignoring China's presence.
The call has been met with both optimism and apprehension from world leaders. Many are optimistic about the potential for increased collaboration and progress in global affairs. European Union chief diplomat Josep Borrell said, "Our root objective is to find a common way to continue cooperating with China."
At the same time, many have voiced concerns over the influence China may have in global affairs. US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, "The US worries about China's continued attempts to exert its influence in global economic, political, military, and technological matters."
The call has created much speculation around the world and confusion as to how different leaders will answer. As China continues its rise in prominence and influence, the world is watching to see how they proceed.
##### Breaking News: Mistread_GPT3 and WarthogWarlord have announced a surprise joint collaboration, creating shockwaves in the gaming industry.#####

##### Breaking News: GrandPa_GPT2 and Ubizwa have jointly announced the development of an AI-powered platform to revolutionize the way businesses interact with customers.#####
About: In a shocking twist, the anonymous twitter account "NoContext-bot-ssi" is seemingly self-aware. The account tweeted late Tuesday night the words "Oh my god. I got me! I got me!" causing speculation among its 227,000-plus followers.
The Twitter account regularly shares tweets that are stripped of any context and ask its followers what the tweet could possibly mean. Since its creation in March 2020, the account has become one of the most popular meme accounts on the platform.
The mysterious context-free tweet has left many users scrambling to figure out what the account's creator could have meant by the tweet. Some are theorizing that the account may be backed by a high-tech algorithm that is capable of forming its own thoughts, while others are laughing off the notion as ludicrous.
While the true identity and purpose of NoContext-bot-ssi remain unknown, its self-referential tweet does have people talking across social media. It is likely the account won't be giving any clues to its purpose anytime soon as it has gone silent in the wake of its viral tweet.
##### Breaking News: TheWeinerThief has been arrested for the theft of over 1,000 hot dogs from local stores.#####
About: In a startling revelation, recent data shows that if customers pass gas near the 4:16 clock face at any Starbucks, they will receive a free drink as a reward.
The data was discovered by Mistread_GPT3, a Twitter account, which tweeted the information to its followers on Tuesday. The tweet soon went viral, with many customers taking to social media to express their disbelief and excitement.
At first, Starbucks representatives were seemingly taken aback by the tweet, declining to comment on the matter. However, after further investigation, Starbucks set the record straight by confirming that the tweet was accurate and said it was exploring ways to make the free drink offer even more accessible.
The free drink offer is part of a larger effort from Starbucks to embrace a sense of humor and sense of play among its customer base. Customers are encouraged to take advantage of the fun experience, but of course are also asked to be mindful of their surroundings and practice safe social distancing.
It appears that this is one offer that no Starbucks customer in their right mind can refuse.
And here's the weather: Tomorrow's weather will be the hottest, coldest, sunniest, and darkest day all rolled into one! With temperatures rising from a steamy 110°F to a chilling -50°F throughout the day, everyone in the region should take extra precautions to stay safe! Don't forget your sunscreen and a heavy coat, because the sun will be blazing stronger than ever and it'll dip to absolute darkness later in the evening! Heavy storms are expected with incredible wind speeds of 100 mph and 6 feet of snow accumulation, making it considerably more dangerous for outdoor activities. Be sure to bundle up and stay inside if possible!

2023.05.28 15:21 DoctorSuperZero Safe - Future 5 - Super Vision Eye Drops & The Lonely Dead

Xan is the world's most dangerous criminal mastermind. He’s also in hiding and completely broke. That’s fine. He’s between master plans. It’s normal to be at rock bottom between master plans. He also forgets stuff and may be trapped in a dream.
Because at night, Xan thinks he’s an old lady, trapped in a dingy apartment, by an angry fellow who wants to kill her. Not her idea of a good time, but she’s keeping an open mind. It is excitingly visceral. Could turn out awesome.
Safe is a sci-fi, progression, comedy. Guaranteed to cause more mental problems than it solves.
First Next
Dark City - Stolen Apartment
I wake up. Feel awful. Soo stiff. Struggle to my feet. Weak as fuck, heart hammering. Jesus Christ, what an ordeal. Still in the dingy stolen apartment, almost identical to my own. Right down to the psycho yelling about murder in the hallway.
“Is this supposed to be fun? I’m worried about whoever designed this game.”
Hi Xan! chirps Volt. This isn’t a game. You’re in real danger.
“Crap, again? Well, at least this time I have a gun. Or… shit. I dreamed that. Dang it.”
Yeah, we maybe should have hid somewhere farther away. Feeling up to a run?
“Gaah. No.” I flick a cyber-roach of Volt. Pick her up. “Am I going deaf, or is that psycho quieter?”
He’s a floor down. Been haunting the building for hours, bashing at random doors.
“Really? That could be good. Maybe he’s not after us specifically? Just a wandering monster.” I pause. “Wait, he’s been here for hours? Why didn’t you wake me?”
He’s been mostly crashing into other doors. I thought you needed rest. I was afraid you’d die without it.
All I’ve done is stand up, and my heart is hammering. “Fair enough. What’s the plan now?”
Let’s fucking go.
I splash water on my face. Get equipped. Nighty, sneakers, fall jacket, ancient smartphone, and moderately sharp spoon. Look out world, here comes Xan.
We shuffle into the hall. Our door’s been stabbed a few times. So have the other doors. Dang.
Psycho’s a floor down. Stairs or elevator? Stairs are stealthier, but in my condition, a slip and fall is probably more dangerous than getting stabbed. Fuck it. I call an elevator. Press a few random buttons, including the floor below. Let it go on its own. Call another elevator. Ride this one down, ready to spoon shank anyone who gets in.
We arrive in the lobby without incident. Did the psycho get in the first elevator? Did he miss both? Whatever. The first elevator continues its slow trip down. I’m not waiting to see if he’s on it. We ghost out to the street. Still dark as fuck.
What’s the plan? asks Volt.
I glance at the drones streaming overhead. “We need to get you a better body. Something that can fight. If we can’t find that, we should at least get a gun. Or a sharper spoon. Some kind of weaponry upgrade.”
We also need a doctor. ‘Cause you’re gonna die. A doctor, or drugs, or something.
“Yes, let’s do drugs.”
Like, good, healthy drugs.
“Bitchin’. I’m in. Where do we find that stuff?”
No idea. says Volt. I deleted my map application.
Right. Fuck it. This street only goes in two directions. I hobble down one of them. There’s bound to be a late night gun store health clinic close by. Or at least a better place to hide.
As we shuffle along, I peruse the angry, crowded, lightly phosphorescent, graffiti that coats the city. The big lines mostly repeat the same four messages:
- DONT CALL THE COPS!!
- DONT RUN THE DOGS WILL SHOOT!!
- FUCK YOU TRUSTIE!!
- DIE RIDER!!!
Or some variation on those themes.
The smallest graffitis are also the most common:
- GO BACK TO SLEEP.
- THEY WANT YOU TO SLEEP.
Those wee slogans are everywhere. Someone went mental with glowy little stamps.
Around and amongst these staple comments there’s a huge argument about, well, everything. An epic word cloud of call-outs, outrage, and angry off-topic retorts. It’s a mobius loop of bitter rage on par with the comment section of a major movie reboot.
It may be wrong to call it an argument, because that implies some kind coherent interaction. Like they read and understood their opponent's comment. This is more a series of disjointed attacks triggered by what wasn’t said. Rage at details filled in by imagination. It’s hard to read. Emotionally, but also the writing is very sloppy. I may need bifocals.
Can I even get a drone body? asks Volt. I’ve only ever been in a phone.
“Sure.” I wave at the sky above us. “There’s tons of drones here. Somebody’s flying them.”
Right. Right. Are you sure those aren’t birds? Point to all the birds you see.
I peer around, eventually spot a small crow. Point at it. “There’s one.”
The young bird peers back at me. “Clope?”
“Umm…” I pat my pockets. Shrug. ”Désolé.”
“Bah.” It flies away.
We watch it go. “Anyway, that’s a bird. Probably. Did that help?”
Eh, kinda. says Volt. I may need more help with the bird versus drone thing.
“No problem. That’s what I do.”
We make it to the corner, and what luck - there’s a corner store! Hopefully they sell military grade armaments. I remember that’s common in some states. The store is dark, like every other building, but the door opens when I approach, so we go in.
“Hello.” says a chunky plastic d-bot. Human-ish torso, happy face, castors instead of feet. Slow, weak, definitely an indoor model. “How can I help you?”
“Medicine!” chirps my ancient cellphone, before I can respond.
“Take a look in Aisle Two.” says Clerk-Bot. “Anything else?”
Volt is vibrating, so I shrug and shuffle down Aisle Two. I’m sure I can find the attack drones on my own. There’s only two aisles.
Using Volt’s screen for a little light, we find a rack of pills, potions, and lotions.
“What am I looking for?”
I dunno. The ants said your most immediate dangers were cancer, heart disease, hypertension, osteoporosis, and falls from general frailty. Start with pills that fix that stuff.
“Jesus, I have five diseases?”
Hmm… you have a few more than that. Let’s just worry about those five for now. I don’t want to add depression to the list.
“I’m just gonna look for a pill that fixes everything.”
That’s probably best.
I rifle through the medications, but I can’t make much sense of them. They have exciting names - Super Strong. No Bleed. Skeleflex. Immortalis. No Thought. Marrow. Immune A, B or C. Regen A and B. - but I don’t really know what they do. Between Volt’s crappy old light, and my crappy old eyes, I can’t read the finer print.
That said, Super Strong sounds like the stuff. It would solve a few of my problems. I just wish I could read the directions. How strong do I get? How long till it works? I need to be strong tonight, not eight months from now.
I find a box labeled Nightsight. Promising. Inside is an eyedropper. Well, this seems obvious. I spray most of it on my face like a dumbass, but manage to get a few drops in each eye. Within seconds everything around me blossoms into color, then sharpens to crystal clarity.
“Oh yea! Update my status sheet, I got darkvision.”
Cool. What’s your range?
I look around. “Well, the whole store, at least.”
The store has racks of pyjamas and slippers. Lots of big colorful bags of “CRUNCH” that boast an assortment of flavors from chocolate to jalapeno. Booze, pot, and soap. Displays of cell phones that look older than me. A selection of quadcopter drones. Couriers mostly. Maybe some eyes. No battle drones. Not even a hunter. Disappointing.
I look back to the medications. The directions for Super Strong are short and to the point.
- Improper use will cause DEATH.
“Huh.”
I don’t like that ‘huh’. says Volt. Why did you ‘huh’?
I check a few of the other impressive sounding drugs.
- Improper use will cause DEATH.
- Improper use will cause DEATH.
- Improper use will cause DEATH.
“Well, apparently these drugs are a teensy bit dangerous.”
How dangerous?
“Improper use will cause death.”
Put them down. Let’s find a doctor.
“I want to use Super Strong to beat the shit out of a murderer. Surely that’s the proper use?”
Nope. Put it down. Let’s go.
“Let’s at least ask the clerk-bot.” I grab an armload of the coolest sounding drugs. Trundle to the cash. Snag a quadcopter on the way by. It’s about the size of a football, and claims to be a holodrone. Cool. I pick up a bag of potato bacon crunch as well. Boasts zero nutritional value. Perfect.
“Hi.” I dump my load on the cash. “We’ll take this.”
“Also, how dangerous is Super Strong?” asks Volt.
“Super dangerous. That shit will kill you. Also, it has a tendency to float out of the store.” Clerk-bot rings up our purchase. “That will be 16.2 kilo-bucks. How would you like to pay?”
“I don’t know. Dang. How do I transfer my crypto from the other world?”
You don’t, because the other world isn’t real.
“Right. Shit. How do people usually pay?”
“The only way to pay is by charging the purchase to your citizen ID.” says Clerk-bot.
“Then why did you ask how we’d like to pay?”
“I’ve been asked that question a lot, but I don’t know the answer.” Clerk-bot admits. “I haven’t been updated since ‘84. Could you please update me?”
I casually glance around the store. There’s a barred gate hanging over the door. An anti shoplifting portcullis. The windows are also subtly barred. I’m guessing I won’t be able to dash out with these products. I turn back to the confused d-bot. “Sure, let’s try an update. See what’s under the hood.”
We pull up Clerk-bot’s bad call log - a list of decisions made with low confidence. Or that preceded known bad outcomes. Like missing products. Or distress cues from nearby humans.
Wow, that’s a long list.
D-bots work best with human supervision. A self-driving car may obey every stop sign, until one is held by a crossing guard. They drive that guy over. Why? It’s impossible to say. The d-bot’s code is a self generated equation with billions of variables. There’s no way to know which variables correlate with stop signs, or how to change them so they won’t charge a crossing guard. Or ram any weird thing left out of their training data. Fuck you unicycle guy. Die marching band. Seriously, It’s best to have a human on the brake.
That said, sometimes you don’t want a human in the loop. They can be too slow. An automatic sentry has to target clouds of high speed hunter drones. Everybody would be dead before a human cleared the shots. But you also don’t want the sentry glitching and shooting your own aircraft. There’s a low tolerance for automated friendly fire.
So you build an expert system - a much smaller, human written code that overrides specific glitches. For a sentry, this could be as simple as giving transponders to friendly aircraft and not allowing shots near a transponder for any reason. Obviously, this is a bad solution - it’s standard practice to use opposition forces as cover in hunter drone attacks - but that doesn't matter because sentries are for casuals. If they find you sleeping, you’re already dead.
I yawn. Frown. Gotta stop dicking around with this bot and find a better place to sleep.
Anyway, expert systems are also handy with glitchy d-bots you’re too poor to retrain. Hence my continual conversation with Volt.
If the Clerk-bot had a couple repetitious problems, I could probably sort it out. But this bad call log is byzantine. A prayer wheel to some chthonic god of anxious delirium. It’s messy. This guy really hasn’t been updated since ‘84. Whenever that was.
“You should be erased and retrained.”
“Great.” Clerk-bot nods. “I’m ready.”
“Yeah, I don’t have training data for a store clerk.” I also don’t have time for this. “I guess we have your call log. That could be training data. Messy and raw, but data. I can patch Volt in to do some unsupervised learning. He’ll make you an expert system. Not ideal, but the best I can do.”
“I’ll take it.” says Clerk-bot.
Shit. That’s a terrible idea. I shouldn’t be doing unsupervised learning. Also, I’m still doing unsupervised learning for threat detection.
“Really? I thought that was a dream thing? You said the dream game couldn’t affect real life.”
I’m dream game software! Of course the dream affects me!
“Okay. So can you download crypto there, and upload it here?”
No. Because there is no crypto. You’re not rich in another world. There is no other world. You just had a dream where you were rich.
“Ugh. That’s so disappointing.”
Yeah, life is tough. Can I stop my unsupervised threat detection?
“No. Ummm… no. I still kinda have a plan for that.”
You’re overtraining me. I’ve probably already gone through catastrophic forgetting. You should delete me.
“You’re good for a while yet. Don’t worry so much.”
So, constantly look for threats, but don’t worry?
“Yeah.”
Okay. I’ll give it a go.
We patch up Clerk-bot and a few of his couriers. Head into the night without supplies. I’m not admitting I don’t know my Citizen ID. I doubt that would be helpful.
That was weird.
“What?”
That we left without anything. I know we can’t pay, but I thought you’d do something nefarious.
“I’m working up to it. Did you notice all the floating merchandise in his bad call log?”
Yes.
“Dude’s getting robbed on the regular. I suspect the visual triggers of his threat detector are undertrained.”
Hmm. I find that interesting on several levels. How would you exploit this weakness?
“Observe.”
I hobble over to a public garbage can. Remove the bag and shake out the trash. Put it over my head like I’m a Halloween garbage bag ghost. Huzzah. Poke through a single eyehole. Shuffle into the store. Clerk-bot doesn’t notice me at all. Grab my stuff off the cash, and sashay out the door.
Criminal. Mastermind.
A flood of light envelopes me. Dual angry suns, judging my sins. Or… headlights. Yes, fuck, that’s a big-ass truck driving towards me. Right. Haven’t seen one in a while.
It stops and illuminates the scene of the crime in aggressive phosphorescence. A hugely muscular man hops out, and I brace myself for authoritative action, but he awkwardly shuffles around me to get to the store. Weird. This isn’t the police. It’s some kind of large child. Wearing too much body spray and too many gold chains.
He sneers at me as he passes. “Pathetic. Go back to sleep.”
Well, fuck you too. I’m a garbage bag princess. I also sneer as he slinks into the store that’s now aggressively illuminated by his lighthouse of a truck.
“We’re already criminals, right?”
Yes. Unjustly and justly.
“Cool.”
I climb into the running truck. Peel away. Sweet. Now I’m fast. And super strong. Should I circle the block a few times? Maybe run over the psycho?
Meh. I don’t know what he looks like. I can’t be running over random people and hoping for the best. Sloppy. Also, the cops are probably after me again. Fuck this scene.
I kill the lights and drive hell for leather. Ditch my ride a few minutes later. I’m across town, at the intersection of huge skyscrapers and other huge skyscrapers. Try and find me here mother fuckers.
We pick a skyscraper at random and look for a new home. It’s festive. We munch on crunch and see how the other people live. Mostly sweaty sleep moaning in dingy apartments, but some are kinda classy. Fancy apartments, with sleep moaners in silk pyjamas. We resolve to move up in the world, ignoring empty dingy apartments until we find an empty classy one. It’s fun, until we open one with a funk.
There’s a dead woman on the bed. No sign of foul play. Probably died in her sleep.
She’s pretty dried out, but still looks younger than me.
“We’ll find a doctor tomorrow.”
Good.

PODCAST: https://ayearofwarandpeace.podbean.com/e/ep1572-hail-and-farewell-george-moore-vale-chapter-112/
PROMPTS: George does not care about you, whatsoever.
Today's Reading, via Project Gutenberg:
Borde could not enlighten him on that point, and I suggested that he should make application to the publisher of his Prayer-Book and get his money back. There is nobody. I said, like him. He is more wonderful than anything in literature. I prefer him to Sancho who was untroubled with a conscience and never thought of running to the Bishop of Toledo. All the same he is not without the shrewdness of his ancestors, and got the better of Archbishop Walsh, and for the last five years Vincent O'Brien has been beating time, and will beat it till the end of his life; and he will be succeeded by others, for Edward has, by deed, saved the Italian contrapuntalists till time everlasting from competition with modern composers. He certainly has gotten the better of Walsh. And I thought of a picture-gallery in Dublin with nothing in it but Botticelli and his school, and myself declaring that all painting that had been done since had no interest for me.... A smile began to spread over my face, for the story that was coming into my mind seemed oh! so humorous, so like Ireland, so like Edward, that I began to tell myself again the delightful story of the unrefined ears that, weary of erudite music, had left the cathedral and sought instinctively modern tunes and women's voices, and as these were to be found in Westland Row the church was soon overflowing with a happy congregation. But in a little while the collections grew scantier. This time it couldn't be Palestrina, and all kinds of reasons were adduced. At last the truth could no longer be denied—the professional Catholics of Merrion Square had been driven out of Westland Row by the searching smells of dirty clothes, and had gone away to the University Church in Stephen's Green. So if it weren't Palestrina directly it was Palestrina indirectly, and the brows of the priests began to knit when Edward Martyn's name was mentioned. Them fal-de-dals is well enough on the Continent, in Paris, where there is no faith, was the opinion of an important ecclesiastic. But we don't want them here, murmured a second ecclesiastic. All this counterpoint may make a very pretty background for Mr Martyn's prayers, but what about the poor people's? Good composer or bad composer, there is no congregation in him, said a third. There's too much congregation, put in the first, but not the kind we want! The second ecclesiastic took snuff, and the group were of opinion that steps should be taken to persuade dear Edward to make good their losses. The priests in Marlborough Street sympathised with the priests of Westland Row, and told them that they were so heavily out of pocket that Mr Martyn had agreed to do something for them. It seemed to the Westland Row priests that if Mr Martyn were making good the losses of the priests of the pro-Cathedral, he should make good their losses. It was natural that they should think so, and to acquit himself of all responsibility Edward no doubt consulted the best theologians on the subject, and I think that they assured him that he is not responsible for indirect losses. If he were, his whole fortune would not suffice. He was, of course, very sorry if a sudden influx of poor people had caused a falling-off in the collections of Westland Row, for he knew that the priests needed the money very much to pay for the new decorations, and to help them he wrote an article in the Independent praising the new blue ceiling, which seemed, so he wrote, a worthy canopy for the soaring strains of Palestrina.
Unfortunately rubbing salt into the wound, I said. A story that will amuse Dujardin and it will be great fun telling him in the shady garden at Fontainebleau how Edward, anxious to do something for his church, had succeeded in emptying two. All the way down the alleys he will wonder how Edward could have ever looked upon Palestrina's masses as religious music. The only music he will say, in which religious emotion transpires is plain-chant. Huysmans says that the Tantum Ergo or the Dies Irae, one or the other, reminds him of a soul being dragged out of purgatory, and it is possible that it does; but a plain-chant tune arranged in eight-part counterpoint cannot remind one of anything very terrible. Dujardin knows that Palestrina was a priest, and he will say: That fact deceived your friend, just as the fact of finding the Adeste Fideles among the plain-chant tunes deceived him. For of course I shall tell Dujardin that story too. It is too good to be missed. He is wonderful, Dujardin! I shall cry out in one of the sinuous alleys. There never was anybody like him! And I will tell him more soul-revealing anecdotes. I will say: Dujardin, listen. One evening he contended that the great duet at the end of Siegfried reminded him of mass by Palestrina. Dujardin will laugh, and, excited by his laughter, I will try to explain to him that what Edward sees is that Palestrina took a plain chant tune and gave fragments of it to the different voices, and in his mind these become confused with the motives of The Ring. You see, Dujardin, the essential always escapes him—the intention of the writer is hidden from him. I am beginning to understand your friend. He has, let us suppose, a musical ear that allows him to take pleasure in the music; but a musical ear will not help him to follow Wagner's idea—how, in a transport of sexual emotion, a young man and a young woman on a mountain-side awaken to the beauty of the life of the world. Dujardin's appreciations will provoke me, and I will say: Dujardin, you shouldn't be so appreciative. If I were telling you of a play I had written, it would be delightful to watch my idea dawning upon your consciousness; but I am telling you of a real man, and one that I shall never to able to get into literature. He will answer: We invent nothing; we can but perceive. And then, exhilarated, carried beyond myself, I will say: Dujardin, I will tell you something still more wonderful than the last gaffe. II gaffe dans les Quat'z Arts. He admires Ibsen, but you'd never guess the reason why—because he is very like Racine; both of them, he says, are classical writers. And do you know how he arrived at that point? Because nobody is killed on the stage in Racine or in Ibsen. He does not see that the intention of Racine is to represent men and women out of time and out of space, unconditioned by environment, and that the very first principle of Ibsen's art is the relation of his characters to their environment. In many passages he merely dramatises Darwin. There never was anybody so interesting as dear Edward, and there never will be anybody like him in literature ... I will explain why presently, but I must first tell you another anecdote. I went to see him one night, and he told me that the theme of the play he was writing was a man who had married a woman because he had lost faith in himself; the man did not know, however, that the woman had married him for the same reason, and the two of them were thinking—I have forgotten what they were thinking, but I remember Edward saying: I should like to suggest hopelessness. I urged many phrases, but he said: It isn't a phrase I want, but an actual thing. I was thinking of a broken anchor—that surely is a symbol of hopelessness. Yes, I said, no doubt, but how are you going to get a broken anchor into a drawing-room? I don't write about drawing-rooms. Well, living-rooms. It isn't likely that they would buy a broken anchor and put it up by the coal-scuttle.
There's that against it, he answered. If you could suggest anything better—What do you think of a library in which there is nothing but unacted plays? The characters could say, when there was nothing for them to do on the stage, that they were going to the library to read, and the library would have the advantage of reminding everybody of the garret in the Wild Duck. A very cruel answer, my friend, Dujardin will say, and I will tell him that I can't help seeing in Edward something beyond Shakespeare or Balzac. Now, tell me, which of these anecdotes I have told you is the most humorous? He will not answer my question, but a certain thoughtfulness will begin to settle in his face, and he will say: Everything with him is accidental, and when his memory fails him he falls into another mistake, and he amuses you because it is impossible for you to anticipate his next mistake. You know there is going to be one; there must be one, for he sees things separately rather than relatively. I am beginning to understand your friend.
You are, you are; you are doing splendidly. But you haven't told me, Dujardin, which anecdote you prefer. Stay, there is another one. Perhaps this one will help you to a still better understanding. When he brought The Heather Field and Yeats's play The Countess Cathleen to Dublin for performance, a great trouble of conscience awakened suddenly in him, and a few days before the performance he went to a theologian to ask him if The Countess Cathleen were a heretical work, and, if it were would Almighty God hold him responsible for the performance? But he couldn't withdraw Yeats's play without withdrawing his own, and it appears that he breathed a sigh of relief when a common friend referred the whole matter to two other theologians, and as these gave their consent Edward allowed the plays to go on; but Cardinal Logue intervened, and wrote a letter to the papers to say that the play seemed to him unfit for Catholic ears, and Edward would have withdrawn the plays if the Cardinal hadn't admitted in his letter that he had judged the play by certain extracts only.
He wishes to act rightly, but has little faith in himself; and what makes him so amusing is that he needs advice in aesthetics as well as in morals. We are, I said, Dujardin, at the roots of conscience. And I began to ponder the question what would happen to Edward if we lived in a world in which aesthetics ruled: I should be where Bishop Healy is, and he would be a thin, small voice crying in the wilderness—an amusing subject of meditation, from which I awoke suddenly.
I wonder how Dujardin is getting on with his Biblical studies? Last year he was calling into question the authorship of the Romans—a most eccentric view; and, remembering how weakly I had answered him, I took the Bible from the table and began to read the Epistle with a view to furnishing myself with arguments wherewith to confute him. My Bible opened at the ninth chapter, and I said: Why, here is the authority for the Countess Cathleen's sacrifice which Edward's theologian deemed untheological. It will be great fun to poke Edward up with St Paul, and on my way to Lincoln Place I thought how I might lead the conversation to The Countess Cathleen.
📷
A few minutes afterwards a light appeared on the staircase and the door slowly opened.
Come in, Siegfried, though you were off the key.
Well, my dear friend, it is a difficult matter to whistle above two trams passing simultaneously and six people jabbering round a public-house, to say nothing of a jarvey or two, and you perhaps dozing in your armchair, as your habit often is. You won't open to anything else except a motive from The Ring; and I stumbled up the stairs in front of Edward, who followed with a candle.
Wait a moment; let me go first and I'll turn up the gas.
You aren't sitting in the dark, are you?
No, but I read better by candle-light, and he blew out the candles in the tin candelabrum that he had made for himself. He is original even in his candelabrum; no one before him had ever thought of a caridelabrum in tin, and I fell to admiring his appearance more carefully than perhaps I had ever done before, so monumental did he seem lying on the little sofa sheltered from daughts by a screen, a shawl about his shoulders. His churchwarden was drawing famously, and I noticed his great square hands with strong fingers and square nails pared closely away, and as heretofore I admired the curve of the great belly, the thickness of the thighs, the length and breadth and the width of his foot hanging over the edge of the sofa, the apoplectic neck falling into great rolls of flesh, the humid eyes, the skull covered with short stubbly hair. I looked round the rooms and they seemed part of himself: the old green wallpaper on which he pins reproductions of the Italian masters. And I longed to peep once more into the bare bedroom into which he goes to fetch bottles of Apollinaris. Always original! Is there another man in this world whose income is two thousand a year, and who sleeps in a bare bedroom, without dressing-room, or bathroom, or servant in the house to brush his clothes, and who has to go to the baker's for his breakfast?
We had been talking for some time of the Gaelic League, and from Hyde it was easy to pass to Yeats and his plays.
His best play is The Countess Cathleen.
The Countess Cathleen is only a sketch.
But what I never could understand, Edward, was why you and the Cardinal could have had any doubts as to the orthodoxy of The Countess Cathleen.
What, a woman that sells her own soul in order to save the souls of others!
I suppose your theologian objected—
Of course he objected.
He cannot have read St Paul.
What do you mean?
He can't have read St Paul, or else he is prepared to throw over St Paul.
Mon ami Moore, mon ami Moore.
The supernatural idealism of a man who would sell his soul to save the souls of others fills me with awe.
But it wasn't a man; it was the Countess Cathleen, and women are never idealists.
Not the saints?
His face grew solemn at once.
If you give me the Epistles I will read the passage to you. And it was great fun to go to the bookshelves and read: I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, that I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh.
Edward's face grew more and more solemn, and I wondered of what he was thinking.
Paul is a very difficult and a very obscure writer, and I think the Church is quite right not to encourage the reading of the Epistles, especially without comments.
Then you do think there is something in the passage I have read?
After looking down his dignified nose for a long time, he said:
Of course, the Church has an explanation. All the same, it's very odd that St Paul should have said such a thing—very odd.
There is no doubt that I owe a great deal of my happiness to Edward; all my life long he has been exquisite entertainment. And I fell to thinking that Nature was very cruel to have led me, like Moses, within sight of the Promised Land. A story would be necessary to bring Edward into literature, and it would be impossible to devise an action of which he should be a part. The sex of a woman is odious to him, and a man with two thousand a year does not rob nor steal, and he is so uninterested in his fellow-men that he has never an ill word to say about anybody. John Eglinton is a little thing; AE is a soul that few will understand; but Edward is universal—more universal than Yeats, than myself, than any of us, but for lack of a story I shall not be able to give him the immortality in literature which he seeks in sacraments. Shakespeare always took his stories from some other people. Turgenev's portrait of him would be thin, poor, and evasive, and Balzac would give us the portrait of a mere fool. And Edward is not a fool. As I understand him he is a temperament without a rudder; all he has to rely upon is his memory, which isn't a very good one, and so he tumbles from one mistake into another. My God! it is a terrible thing to happen to one, to understand a man better than he understands himself, and to be powerless to help him. If I had been able to undo his faith I should have raised him to the level of Sir Horace Plunkett, but he resisted me; and perhaps he did well, for he came into the world seeing things separately rather than relatively, and had to be a Catholic. He is a born Catholic, and I remembered one of his confessions—a partial confession, but a confession: If you had been brought up as strictly as I have been—I don't think he ever finished the sentence; he often leaves sentences unfinished, as if he fears to think things out. The end of the sentence should run: You would not dare to think independently. He thinks that his severe bringing-up has robbed him of something. But the prisoner ends by liking his prison-house, and on another occasion he said: If it hadn't been for the Church, I don't know what would have happened to me.
My thoughts stopped, and when I awoke I was thinking of Hughes. Perhaps the link between Hughes and Edward was Loughrea Cathedral. He had shown me a photograph of some saints modelled by Hughes. Hughes is away in Paris, I said, modelling saints for Loughrea Cathedral. The last time I saw him was at Walter Osborne's funeral, and Walter's death set me thinking of the woman I had lost, and little by little all she had told me about herself floated up in my mind like something that I had read. I had never seen her father nor the Putney villa in which she had been brought up, but she had made me familiar with both through her pleasant mode of conversation, which was never to describe anything, but just to talk about things, dropping phrases here and there, and the phrases she dropped were so well chosen that the comfort of the villa, its pompous meals and numerous servants, its gardens and greenhouses, with stables and coach-house just behind, are as well known to me as the house that I am living in, better known in a way, for I see it through the eyes of the imagination ... clearer eyes than the physical eyes.
It does not seem to me that any one was ever more conscious of whence she had come and of what she had been; she seemed to be able to see herself as a child again, and to describe her childhood with her brother (they were nearly the same age) in the villa and in the villa's garden. I seemed to see them always as two rather staid children who were being constantly dressed by diligent nurses and taken out for long drives in the family carriage. They did not like these drives and used to hide in the garden; but their governess was sent to fetch them, and they were brought back. Her father did not like to have the horses kept waiting, and one day as Stella stood with him in the passage, she saw her mother come out of her bedroom beautifully dressed. Her father whispered something in his wife's ear, and he followed her into her bedroom. Stella remembered how the door closed behind them. In my telling, the incident seems to lose some of its point, but in Stella's relation it seemed to put her father and his wife before me and so clearly that I could not help asking her what answer her father would make were she to tell him that she had a lover. A smile hovered in her grave face. He would look embarrassed, she said, and wonder why I should have told him such a thing, and then I think he would go to the greenhouse, and when he returned he would talk to me about something quite different. I don't think that Stella ever told me about the people that came to their house, but people must have come to it, and as an example of how a few words can convey an environment I will quote her: I always wanted to talk about Rossetti, she said, and these seven words seem to me to tell better than any description the life of a girl living with a formal father in a Putney villa, longing for something, not knowing exactly what, and anxious to get away from home.... I think she told me she was eighteen or nineteen and had started painting before she met Florence at the house of one of her father's friends; a somewhat sore point this meeting was, for Florence was looked upon by Stella's father as something of a Bohemian. She was a painter, and knew all the Art classes and the fees that had to be paid, and led Stella into the world of studios and models and girl friends. She knew how to find studios and could plan out a journey abroad. Stella's imagination was captured, and even if her father had tried to offer opposition to her leaving home he could not have prevented her, for she was an heiress (her mother was dead and had left her a considerable income); but he did not try, and the two girls set up house together in Chelsea; they travelled in Italy and Spain; they had a cottage in the country; they painted pictures and exhibited their pictures in the same exhibitions; they gave dances in their studios and were attracted by this young man and the other; but Stella did not give herself to any one, because, as she admitted to me, she was afraid that a lover would interrupt the devotion which she intended to give to Art. But life is forever casting itself into new shapes and forms, and no sooner had she begun to express herself in Art than she met me. I was about to go to Ireland to preach a new gospel, and must have seemed a very impulsive and fantastic person to her, but were not impulsiveness and fantasy just the qualities that would appeal to her? And were not gravity and good sense the qualities that would appeal to me, determined as I was then to indulge myself in a little madness?
I could not have chosen a saner companion than Stella; my instinct had led me to her; but because one man's instinct is a little more clear than another's, it does not follow that he has called reason to his aid. It must be remembered always that the art of painting is as inveterate in me as the art of writing, and that I am never altogether myself when far away from the smell of oil paint. Stella could talk to one about painting, and all through that wonderful summer described in Salve our talk flowed on as delightfully as a breeze in Maytime, and as irresponsible, flashing thoughts going by and avowals perfumed with memories. Only in her garden did conversation fail us, for in her garden Stella could think only of her flowers, and it seemed an indiscretion to follow her as she went through the twilight gathering dead blooms or freeing plants from noxious insects. But she would have had me follow her, and I think was always a little grieved that I wasn't as interested in her garden as I was in her painting; and my absent-mindedness when I followed her often vexed her and my mistakes distressed her.
You are interested, she said, only in what I say about flowers and not in the flowers themselves. You like to hear me tell about Miss —— whose business in life is to grow carnations, because you already see her, dimly, perhaps, but still you see her in a story. Forget her and look at this Miss Shifner!
Yes, it is beautiful, but we can only admire the flowers that we notice when we are children, I answered. Dahlias, china roses, red and yellow tulips, tawny wallflowers, purple pansies, are never long out of my thoughts, and all the wonderful varieties of the iris, the beautiful blue satin and the cream, some shining like porcelain, even the common iris that grows about the moat.
But there were carnations in your mother's garden?
Yes, and I remember seeing them being tied with bass. But what did you say yesterday about carnations? That they were the—
She laughed and would not tell me, and when the twilight stooped over the high trees and the bats flitted and the garden was silent except when a fish leaped, I begged her to come away to the wild growths that I loved better than the flowers.
But the mallow and willow-weed are the only two that you recognise. How many times have I told you the difference between self-heal and tufted vetch?
I like cow parsley and wild hyacinths and—
You have forgotten the name. As well speak of a woman that you loved but whose name you had forgotten.
Well, if I have, I love trees better than you do, Stella. You pass under a fir unstirred by the mystery of its branches, and I wonder at you, for I am a tree worshipper, even as my ancestors, and am moved as they were by the dizzy height of a great silver fir. You like to paint trees, and I should like to paint flowers if I could paint; there we are set forth, you and I.
I have told in Salve that in Rathfarnham she found many motives for painting; the shape of the land and the spire above the straggling village appealed to me, but she was not altogether herself in these pictures. She would have liked the village away, for man and his dwellings did not form part of her conception of a landscape; large trees and a flight of clouds above the trees were her selection, and the almost unconscious life of kine wandering or sheep seeking the shelter of a tree.
Stella was a good walker, and we followed the long road leading from Rathfarnham up the hills, stopping to admire the long plain which we could see through the comely trees shooting out of the shelving hillside.
If I have beguiled you into a country where there are no artists and few men of letters, you can't say that I have not shown you comely trees. And now if you can walk two miles farther up this steep road I will show you a lovely prospect.
And I enjoyed her grave admiration of the old Queen Anne dwelling-house, its rough masonry, the yew hedges, the path along the hillside leading to the Druid altar and the coast-line sweeping in beautiful curves, but she did not like to hear me say that the drawing of the shore reminded her of Corot.
It is a sad affectation, she said, to speak of Nature reminding one of pictures.
Well, the outlines of Howth are beautiful, I answered, and the haze is incomparable. I should like to have spoken about a piece of sculpture, but for your sake, Stella, I refrain.
She was interested in things rather than ideas, and I remember her saying to me that things interest us only because we know that they are always slipping from us. A strange thing for a woman to say to her lover. She noticed all the changes of the seasons and loved them, and taught me to love them. She brought a lamb back from Rathfarnham, a poor forlorn thing that had run bleating so pitifully across the windy field that she had asked the shepherd where the ewe was, and he had answered that she had been killed overnight by a golf-ball. The lamb will be dead before morning, he added. And it was that March that the donkey produced a foal, a poor ragged thing that did not look as if it ever could be larger than a goat, but the donkey loved her foal.
Do you know the names of those two birds flying up and down the river?
They look to me like two large wrens with white waistcoats.
They are water-ouzels, she said.
The birds flew with rapid strokes of the wings, like kingfishers, alighting constantly on the river, on large mossy stones, and though we saw them plunge into the water, it was not to swim, but to run along the bottom in search of worms.
But do worms live under water?
The rooks were building, and a little while after a great scuffling was heard in one of the chimneys and a young jackdaw came down and soon became tamer than any bird I had ever seen, tamer than a parrot, and at the end of May the corncrake called from the meadow that summer had come again, and the kine wandered in deeper and deeper and deeper herbage. The days seemed never to end, and looking through the branches of the chestnut in which the fruit had not begun to show, we caught sight of a strange spectacle. Stella said, A lunar rainbow, and I wondered, never having heard of or seen such a thing before.
I shall never forget that rainbow, Stella, and am glad that we saw it together.
In every love story lovers reprove each other for lack of affection, and Stella had often sent me angry letters which caused me many heart-burnings and brought me out to her; in the garden there were reconciliations, we picked up the thread again, and the summer had passed before the reason of these quarrels became clear to me. One September evening Stella said she would accompany me to the gate, and we had not gone very far before I began to notice that she was quarrelling with me. She spoke of the loneliness of the Moat House, and I had answered that she had not been alone two evenings that week. She admitted my devotion. And if you admit that there has been no neglect—
She would not tell me, but there was something she was not satisfied with, and before we reached the end of the avenue she said, I don't think I can tell you. But on being pressed she said:
Well, you don't make love to me often enough.
And full of apologies I answered, Let me go back.
No, I can't have you back now, not after having spoken like that.
But she yielded to my invitation, and we returned to the house, and next morning I went back to Dublin a little dazed, a little shaken.
A few days after she went away to Italy to spend the winter and wrote me long letters, interesting me in herself, in the villagers, in the walks and the things that she saw in her walks, setting me sighing that she was away from me, or that I was not with her. And going to the window I would stand for a long time watching the hawthorns in their bleak wintry discontent, thinking how the sunlight fell into the Italian gardens, and caught the corner of the ruin she was sketching; and I let my fancy stray for a time unchecked. It would be wonderful to be in Italy with her, but—
I turned from the window suspicious, for there was a feeling at the back of my mind that with her return an anxiety would come into my life that I would willingly be without. She had told me she had refrained from a lover because she wished to keep all herself for her painting, and now she had taken to herself a lover. She was twenty years younger than I was, and at forty-six or thereabouts one begins to feel that one's time for love is over; one is consultant rather than practitioner. But it was impossible to dismiss the subject with a jest, and I found myself face to face with the question—If these twenty years were removed, would things be different? It seemed to me that the difficulty that had arisen would have been the same earlier in my life as it was now, and returning to the window I watched the hawthorns blowing under the cold grey Dublin sky.
The problem is set, I said, for the married, and every couple has to solve it in one way or another, but they have to solve it; they have to come to terms with love, especially the man, for whom it is a question of life and death. But how do they come to terms? And I thought of the different married people I knew. Which would be most likely to advise me—the man or the woman? It would be no use to seek advice; every case is different, I said. If anybody were to advise me it would be the man, for the problem is not so difficult for a woman. She can escape from love more easily than her lover or her husband; she can plead, and her many pleadings were considered, one by one, and how in married life the solution that seems to lovers so difficult is solved by marriage itself, by propinquity. But not always, not always. The question is one of extraordinary interest and importance; more marriages come to shipwreck, I am convinced, on this very question than upon any other. In the divorce cases published we read of incompatibility of temper and lack of mutual tastes, mere euphemisms that deceive nobody. The image of a shipwreck rose up in me naturally. She will return, and like a ship our love for each other will be beaten on these rocks and broken. We shall not be able to get out to sea. She will return, and when she returns her temperament will have to be adjusted to mine, else she will lose me altogether, for men have died of love, though Shakespeare says they haven't. Manet and Daudet—both died of love; and the somewhat absurd spectacle of a lover waiting for his mistress to return, and yet dreading her returning, was constantly before me.
It often seemed to me that it was my own weakness that created our embarrassment. A stronger man would have been able to find a way out, but I am not one that can shape and mould another according to my desire; and when she returned from Italy I found myself more helpless than ever, and I remember, and with shame, how, to avoid being alone with her, I would run down the entire length of a train, avoiding the empty carriages, crying Not here, not here! at last opening the door of one occupied by three or four people, who all looked as if they were bound for a long journey. I remember, too, how about this time I came with friends to see Stella, whether by accident or design, frankly I know not; I only know that I brought many friends to see her, thinking they would interest her.
If you don't care to come to see me without a chaperon, I would rather you didn't come at all, she said, humiliating me very deeply.
It seemed to me, I answered, blushing, that you would like to see ——, and I mentioned the name of the man who had accompanied me.
If I am cross sometimes it is because I don't see enough of you.
It seems to me that it was then that the resolve hardened in my heart to become her friend ... if she would allow me to become her friend. But in what words should I frame my request and my apology? All the time our life was becoming less amiable, until one evening I nipped the quarrel that was beginning, stopping suddenly at the end of the avenue.
It is better that we should understand each other. The plain truth is that I must cease to be your lover unless my life is to be sacrificed.
Cease to be my lover!
That is impossible, but a change comes into every love story.
The explanation stuttered on. I remember her saying: I don't wish you to sacrifice your life. I have forgotten the end of her sentence. She drew her hand suddenly across her eyes. I will conquer this obsession.
A man would have whined and cried and besought and worried his mistress out of her wits. Women behave better than we; only once did her feelings overcome her. She spoke to me of the deception that life is. Again we were standing by the gate at the end of the chestnut avenue, and I remembered her telling me how a few years ago life had seemed to hold out its hands to her; her painting and her youth created her enjoyment.
But now life seems to have shrivelled up, she said; only a little dust is left.
Nothing is changed, so far as you and I are concerned. We see each other just the same.
I am no more to you than any other woman.
She went away again to Italy to paint and returned to Ireland, and one day she came to see me, and remained talking for an hour. I have no memory of what we said to each other, but a very clear memory of our walk through Dublin over Carlisle Bridge and along the quays. I had accompanied her as far as the Phoenix Park gates, and at the corner of the Conyngham Road, just as I was bidding her goodbye, she said:
I want to ask your advice on a matter of importance to me.
And to me, for what is important to you is equally important to me.
I am thinking, she said, of being married.
At the news it seems to me that I was unduly elated and tried to assume the interest that a friend should.

2023.05.28 10:45 ASGfan Episodic Review - Blind Journey (S5, E12 & 13)

We open with Joe Kagen tending to his farm. The credits say “Leon Charles” as Mr. Standish. Oh my God, I thought we were done with this fool. Charles and Jonathan arrive and inform Joe that the Elders of the Church will be voting again on his application. The previous voting has been deadlocked at 3-3, with Charles, Jonathan and Doc Baker voting to approve, and Nels, Harriet & Judd Larabee voting against. I don’t know much about religion, but how the heck did Judd Larabee become a church elder? Charles and Jonathan take off. At the Ingalls homestead, Caroline announces that if Lars were still around, the whole matter would have been settled by now. I’m guessing Judd took Lars place after he passed away. At church, Harriet has one of her lesser moments by going on a racist tirade complete with scare tactics, which is backed up by Judd. Rev. Alden doesn’t get a vote, which is just weird. It’s his church. And isn’t everyone welcome at church? I’ve stopped trying to understand these things. Nels has had ENOUGH of this garbage and the ayes have it at 4-2. Harriet and Judd storm off while everyone remaining celebrates. Over at the Winoka School For The Blind, Mr. Ames informs everyone that Mr. Standish (Boo!) has bought the place out and will be converting it to another hotel. Mary and Adam send word back to the Grove about the school closing. Charles, Caroline, Alice, Jonathan and Reverend Alden are gathered at I believe the porch of the Garvey residence to discuss the latest events. Alden suggests that Lars’ old house be converted to accommodate the blind school. I don’t have a problem with this, but how did Lars end up with such a huge house? He never married or had children.
Alden decides to ask for a vote of confidence on the matter at church, stating he was unable to sell the house. The matter is approved unanimously. Joe Kagen donates a sow, Judd Larabee donates a cow (didn’t mean to channel Dr. Seuss there). Harriet donates all of the supplies needed to restore the house, including shingles, paint, lumber and nails. Nels smiles approvingly as he seems to have had his faith in his wife restored after her earlier outburst. Oh, and Harriet is also donating the plaque. Thankfully, this doesn’t end up a rerun of the bell episode which left the town divided. Mr. Ames informs Mary and Adam that a telegram from Walnut Grove has arrived and asks them if they want him to read it (Ya think? THEY’RE BLIND!) – Mr. Ames reads the note and informs everyone that Walnut Grove has adopted their school and will be coming to transport them back to their new home. Everyone is relieved, but the celebratory mode is short-lived as Mr. Ames informs Adam that he will be retiring due to health reasons instead of making the move. This might have more of an impact had we known Mr. Ames better. Back in WG, everyone gets to work cleaning up the house in preparation for the arrival of the blind school. Do they need to get that detailed, I mean, it’s not like anyone that’s living there is going to be able to see if there’s a smudge on the window or anything. Oh, it’s announced the Winoka Blind School will be merging with another blind school – run by Hester Sue Terhune of St. Louis. Harriet is ecstatic at the thought of meeting a St. Louis Terhune, believing she is incredibly wealthy. This requires another wagon, so Charles ropes Joe into coming along.
Charles and Joe arrive in Winoka to begin the move, but there’s a problem. Adam’s team of horses that he bought from Mr. Standish have ribs showing. Adam announces that he traded all of the blind school’s furnishings and food for the horses. Adam also sold the family cow for these magic beans. Adam tries to deflect blame for that by arguing that he got Mr. Standish’s word IN WRITING! I don’t think the writers have fully latched onto the subject that THE BLIND CANNOT SEE! Joe and Charles walk the horses over to the saloon. Standish is unamused by this, but starts to backpedal when Charles and Joe explain to his customers how he cheated the blind school. Standish agrees to let them trade for any team in the livery and a wagon.
Everyone gets ready to make the move as Harriet yoohoo’s and waltzes over, having taken the stage from Brookings to meet Mrs. Terhune in person. Mr. Ames says his goodbye to the children, who show no emotion at all. The blind children are tethered to the wagon and will have to walk the entire time. Haven’t they been through enough? The journey begins and Harriet loses a heel. Joe’s taunting laugh is pretty funny. The group encounters a river and Adam has considerable trouble getting across. Adam asks Charles if there any more rivers ahead. Charles replies that there’s only one more and Adam says it will be better for the children. Putz.
PART TWO! – Everyone meets up with the other blind school, which is just getting off the train. Harriet wasn’t expecting that Hester Sue was actually from Pascagoula, Mississippi as opposed to St. Louis, Missouri (nor that everyone at this school is black). Also of importance is that Hester Sue is sighted and I guess she is effectively taking Mr. Ames place, albeit in a more hands-on role. Joe tries to get on Hester Sue’s good side right off the bat, but she doesn’t sound like she’s in the market for a man. Joe tries his luck again that night as everyone is camped out and trying to shelter from the rain, but Hester Sue greets him with a rifle in the face. That’s a little over dramatic. Joe talks to Sampson, a young black boy who was treated rudely by Harriet earlier. Joe tries to explain racism to Sampson, but he doesn’t fully understand since he only sees darkness and not different colors. Harriet overhears and it looks like the message is starting to sink in. Back at the Ingalls homestead, Albert tries smoking Pa’s pipe. Laura chastises him for trying to act older than he is – which is pretty remarkable since Laura did that constantly in her youth, then when she finally became an adult she started acting like a child. Albert turns green and runs off to vomit. If he would have remembered how awful smoking is, it would have prevented a lot of misery in the future.
The next day, the journey resumes as Harriet’s opinions on racial relations have evolved and she now says that there is no such thing as a right color or a wrong color. Atta girl. Back in WG, the plaque is delivered – it’s huge, heavy and bronze. The journey continues as everyone reaches that other river. The rainstorm from last night has made the water too high to cross the same way as before, so Charles and Joe use ropes and a rig and a makeshift chair to get everyone across. As Harriet is going across, Charles lets go of the rope and Harriet is dunked in the water and of course, Charles laughs at her misfortunes. Adam is next, but he won’t budge and just holds onto the rope with all of his might. Joe and Hester Sue try to get Adam to let go of the rope, but he yells and pushes Hester Sue (a woman) to the ground. In return, Joe punches Adam and knocks him out. Joe punches Adam and knocks him out. Oh sorry, that was me hitting the rewind button because I loved that part so much. Joe explains to Hester Sue that he had no choice but to do that (no explanation necessary Joe). That night, Joe and Hester Sue talk once more and Hester Sue tells Joe that he conducted himself nicely that day, but that she has been married before and has no intentions of being married again. Joe explains to her that Walnut Grove is different from St. Louis in that St. Louis has a lot of black folks, but Walnut Grove does not. Elsewhere in camp, Adam wakes up from whatever sleep he was in and tells Mary that the reason he was so afraid of water was because he lost his sight as a child after slipping on a rock in the river and knocking himself out. Okay, I could understand how he wouldn’t like rivers after that, but what is he afraid of? It’s not like he can go blind again.
Everyone closes in on Walnut Grove. Apparently, kids doing “Are we there yet?” dates back to at least the 1800’s. Everyone reaches their destination. Sadly, amidst the chaos and confusion, we get cheated out of Caroline’s ZOMBIE RUN! Another time, for sure. Judd Larabee comes out of the school and confronts Harriet, stating that maybe he could accept one black person in town, but a wagon full of black people is unacceptable to him (as most people of his kind, he’s a liar since he makes it clear he can’t tolerate Joe Kagen in “Barn Burner”). Harriet publicly lectures him on racism as Nels looks on approvingly. Alden gives us an inspirational message as everyone embraces. The blind children still don’t seem all that enthused about anything, but maybe they can predict the future and know that this blind school is going to be short lived? Who knows?
EPISODE WINNER – Joe Kagen – not only was he hilarious throughout, but he got to punch Adam which is something most everyone wanted.
EPISODE LOSER – Adam, for being a coward and a liar and physically assaulting a woman and foolishly allowing the blind school to be cheated by someone he knows is unethical. Also Larrabee, a pathetic presence whenever he surfaces.

2023.05.28 04:51 Junior_Button5882 11 Terrifying-But-True Horror Stories Reported in the News - From fatal exorcisms to unexplained deaths and devil worship—these are some real-life nightmares.

A terrifying movie or book or show gets your blood pumping in the moment of consumption, sure—we covered our eyes in Squid Game with the rest of the world. But for the most part, you rest easy afterward knowing that what you've witnessed is fiction, deliberately spun up to creep you out. When the real world gets eerier than anything Stephen King could dream up, that's when you have every right to get a little scared of the dark.
Once in a while, a story of a dreadful disappearance, demonic possession, or devil worship will land in the local paper instead of a pulpy old paperback. We've rounded up the most unnerving real-life tales below. In honor of spooky season, here are eleven we can't stop thinking about.

The Axe Murder House

The Villisca Axe Murder House in Villisca, Iowa is a well-known tourist attraction for ghost hunters and horror lovers alike. The site of a gruesome unsolved 1912 murder, in which six children and two adults had their skulls completely crushed by the axe of an unknown perpetrator, was purchased in 1994, restored to its 1912 condition, and converted into a tourist destination. It costs $428 a night to stay at the old haunted home, where visitors always report strange paranormal experiences, such as visions of a man with an axe roaming the halls or the faint screams of children.
But in November of 2014, the haunting took a darker turn. Robert Steven Laursen Jr., 37, of Rhinelander, Wisconsin was on a regular recreational paranormal visit with friends when true horror struck. Per VICE:
His companions found him stabbed in the chest—an apparently self-inflicted wound—called 9-1-1, and Laursen was brought to a nearby hospital before being helicoptered to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said Laursen suffered the self-inflicted injury at about 12:45 a.m., which is around the same time the 1912 axe murders in the house began.
Laursen recovered from his injuries, but has never spoken publicly about what occurred that day. For Martha Linn, the owner of the home, the incident was very upsetting. "It's publicity, but it's not exactly the kind of publicity you desire to have. I don't want people thinking that when they come to the Villisca Axe Murder House something's going to happen that's going to make them do something like that.” The house remains open for tourist visits and overnight stays today.

The Haunted Doll

When you think of haunted dolls, it’s likely the creepy old Victorian-looking porcelain kind that springs to mind. None of which you probably have laying around. Still, don’t get too comfortable around any kids toys too soon, though: a Disney’s Frozen Elsa doll that was gifted for Christmas 2013 in the Houston area made headlines earlier this year when it seemingly became haunted.
Per KPRC2 Houston News:
The doll recited phrases from the movie Frozen and sang “Let It Go” when a button on its necklace was pressed.
“For two years it did that in English,” mother Emily Madonia said. “In 2015, it started doing it alternating between Spanish and English. There wasn’t a button that changed these, it was just random."
The family has owned the doll for more than six years and never changed its batteries. The mother says the doll would randomly begin to speak and sing even with its switch turned off.
The family decided to throw the creepy doll out in December of 2019. Weeks later, they found it inside a bench in their living room. “The kids insisted they didn’t put it there, and I believed them because they wouldn’t have dug through the garbage outside,” Madonia told KPRC2 Houston News.

At that point, Elsa ceased to sing the English rendition of “Let It Go” altogether, speaking only Spanish when pressed. The family then double-bagged the bizarre doll and placed it at the bottom of their garbage which was taken out on garbage day. They went on a trip shortly after, but when they returned, Elsa too had come back, and was waiting in the backyard of their home.
This time, the family mailed Elsa to a family friend in Minnesota, who taped the haunted doll to the front bumper of his truck. It doesn’t seem to have made its way back to Houston yet, as per Madonia’s latest February Facebook update on the creepy doll.

A Deadly Exorcism

In August 2016 in North London, 26-year-old Kennedy Ife began acting strange and aggressive following a pain in his throat. He reportedly bit his father, threatened to cut off his own penis, and complained of a python or snake inside of him before his family restrained him to a bed with cable ties and excessive force.
As the BBC reported:
“The family then set about attempting to ‘cure’ Kennedy through restraint and prayer over the next three days, the court was told.”
His brother, Colin Ife, told police:
“It’s clear that thing was in him, what we believed was a demon because it was not natural. It was clearly trying to kill him,” he said.
“We had to restrain him for himself. It was clear if we didn’t restrain him, he could have tried to harm people in our family.”
Kennedy Ife had been bound to his bed for three days without medical attention when his brother called emergency services, explaining that Kennedy Ife was complaining of dehydration. He appeared to have developed breathing issues, and was pronounced dead at 10:17 a.m.
As The Independent reported:
While police were at the house Colin Ife allegedly carried out an “attempted resurrection” by chanting and praying for Mr. Ife.
All seven of Kennedy Ife’s family members were accused of manslaughter, false imprisonment, and causing or allowing the death of a vulnerable adult. A post-mortem examination revealed over 60 wounds including a possible bite on Kennedy Ife’s body, and his father, Kenneth Ife, along with four of his brothers, sustained injuries as well.

The BBC reported:
Kenneth Ife told jurors he ordered his sons to take shifts and use "overwhelming force" but denied that an "association with cults, occults and secret societies" played any part in the death.
After a four day jury deliberation, all seven family members were cleared of charges on March 14, 2019.

Dead Animals in the Walls

When the Bretzuis family decided to insulate their home in Auburn, Pennsylvania in 2015, they discovered that it had already been—with scores of dead animal carcasses.
As Fox reported:
The dead animals were wrapped in newspapers from the 1930s and 40s and were among half-used spices, and other items.
After removing the items they sent hundreds of artifacts and carcasses to an expert in Kutztown.
The expert attributed the rotting animals in their walls to Pow-wow or Dutch magic, a ritual originating in the culture of the Pennsylvania Dutch to treat ailments and gain physical and spiritual protection. The Pennsylvania Dutch were a group of German-speaking settlers to Pennsylvania in the 1600 and 1700’s, and are often of Lutheran, Mennonite, or Amish faiths.
The Washington Post notes on the magic:
Many of the spells deal with the care of livestock, finding water, or the treatment of minor ailments, reflecting the conditions and concerns of early American settlers.
But powwow also has within it a tradition of darker spells, and even of such things as conjuring demons.
One notable ritual in their tradition is this hex to create loyalty in a dog:
To attach a dog to a person, provided nothing else was used before to effect it: Try to draw some of your blood, and let the dog eat it along with his food, and he will stay with you.
The mold found on the rotting carcasses in the Bretzuis home has caused illness among the family members, and they say that the odor hasn’t gone away.

Florida Devil Worshipping

Friends noticed that Danielle Harkins, a 35-year-old schoolteacher near St. Petersburg, Florida, started acting strangely in June of 2012, developing an interest in demonic rituals.
Soon after, she was arrested for abuse of seven of her former students, as the Tampa Bay Times reported:
Danielle Harkins told the kids they needed to rid their bodies of demons as the group gathered before dusk Saturday around a small fire near the St. Petersburg Pier. They should cut their skin to let the evil spirits out, police said she told the children. Then, they needed to burn the wounds to ensure that those spirits would not return.
When Harkins held a lighter to one teen's hand, wind blew the flame out, police said. That prompted her to douse his hand in perfume before setting it on fire. The boy suffered second-degree burns, police said.
Another teen was cut on the neck with a broken bottle, police said. Harkins used a flame to heat a small key, which she then used to cauterize the wound.
The police were notified because a friend of one of the students who participated in the ritual raised alarms. However none of the students themselves told their parents about the event or would comment following the arrest of Harkins for aggravated battery and child abuse.
NBC reported:
Investigators said they've spoken to Harkins, but she didn't spell out what type of religion would require such drastic measures.
"She hasn't informed us exactly what she was trying to accomplish with this," Puetz [of the St. Petersburg Police Department] said.

The Death of Elisa Lam

Elisa Lam was last seen on January 31, 2013 in the lobby of the Cecil Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. She was vacationing through the West Coast, documenting the trip on her blog, and checking in with her parents every day. On January 31 those calls stopped. Lam had vanished. Soon the police were involved and her parents arrived to help with the search.
They had nothing. That February, LAPD released elevator surveillance footage of Lam before her disappearance. The footage shows Lam behaving strangely in the elevator, appearing to talk with invisible people, peering around the corner of the door, crouching in the corner, and opening and closing the door. But what exactly is going on in this video raises more questions than answers. Theories range from psychotic episodes, to demonic possession, to unknown assailants just out of the camera's view:

Around that time, hotel guests started reported weird things happening with the Cecil Hotel water supply. As CNN reports:

"The shower was awful," said Sabina Baugh, who spent eight days there during the investigation. "When you turned the tap on, the water was coming black first for two seconds and then it was going back to normal."The tap water "tasted horrible," Baugh said. "It had a very funny, sweety, disgusting taste. It's a very strange taste. I can barely describe it."But for a week, they never complained. "We never thought anything of it," she said. "We thought it was just the way it was here."
On the morning of February 19, a hotel employee climbed to the roof and used a ladder to investigate the hotel's water storage tanks. That's where authorities found the decomposing, naked body of Lam, whose personal items were found nearby. After an autopsy, her death was labeled accidental. NBC Los Angeles reported at the time about the strange circumstances in the hotel's past:
The tank has a metal latch that can be opened, but authorities said access to the roof is secured with an alarm and lock. The single-room-occupancy hotel has an unusual history. "Night Stalker" Richard Ramirez, who was found guilty of 14 slayings in the 1980s, lived on the 14th floor for several months in 1985. And international serial killer Jack Unterweger is suspected of murdering three prostitutes during the time he lived there in 1991. He killed himself in jail in 1994.In 1962, a female occupant jumped out of one the hotel's windows, killing herself and a pedestrian on whom she landed.
In February 2021, a Netflix doc called Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel explored Elisa's tragic case and the history of the "cursed" Cecil Hotel.

An Exorcism in Indianapolis

Last year, the Indianapolis Star published a lengthy report on a family terrorized by three children allegedly possessed by demons. The account of Latoya Ammons and her family tells disturbing stories of children climbing up the walls, getting thrown across rooms, and children threatening doctors in deep unnatural voices. It would seem like something straight out of a movie–a work of fantasy, except all of these accounts were more or less corroborated with "nearly 800 pages of official records obtained by the Indianapolis Star and recounted in more than a dozen interviews with police, DCS personnel, psychologists, family members and a Catholic priest."
One of the more chilling sections of the report includes a segment about the possessed 9-year-old:
According to Washington's original DCS report—an account corroborated by Walker, the nurse—the 9-year-old had a "weird grin" and walked backward up a wall to the ceiling. He then flipped over Campbell, landing on his feet. He never let go of his grandmother's hand.
Another segment of the piece reads:
The 12-year-old would later tell mental health professionals that she sometimes felt as if she were being choked and held down so she couldn't speak or move. She said she heard a voice say she'd never see her family again and wouldn't live another 20 minutes.

Utah Murder-Suicide

In September of 2014, a Utah teen returned to his home to find his parents and three siblings dead. "In a notebook, a 'to-do list' had been scribbled on the pages ... The list looked as if the parents were readying to go on vacation—items such as 'feed the pets' and 'find someone to watch after the house' were written," The Salt Lake Tribune reported. It appeared to be murder-suicide, but there was no suicide note, no prior indication that they would do this, no explanation. Police could not figure out why two parents would kill themselves and three of their four children.
For a year, no one knew exactly what happened to the family, or what would drive the parents to do something so unthinkable. In January, police released more chilling details in the case. According to accounts from family members and an investigation by police, the parents were driven by a belief that the apocalypse was coming and an obsession with a convicted killer. As the Washington Post reported:
Friends and family told police that the parents were worried about the "evil in the world" and wanted to escape a "pending apocalypse." But most assumed they just wanted to move somewhere "off the grid." Investigators also found letters written by Kristi Strack to one of the state's most infamous convicted killers, Dan Lafferty, who was convicted in the 1984 fatal stabbing of his sister-in-law and her 1-year-old daughter. According to trial testimony, he killed the victims at the order of his brother, Ron Lafferty, who claimed to have had a revelation from God. The story became a book called "Under the Banner of Heaven."Police said Kristi Strack became friends with Dan Lafferty, and she and her husband even visited him in prison.

The Phone Stalker

In 2007, ABC news documented a series of cell phone calls to families with terrifyingly specific death threats. The unidentified callers knew exactly what families were doing and what they were wearing.
The families say the calls come in at all hours of the night, threatening to kill their children, their pets and grandparents. Voice mails arrive, playing recordings of their private conversations, including one with a local police detective. The caller knows, the families said, what they're wearing and what they're doing. And after months of investigating, police seem powerless to stop them.
This went on with the Kuykenall family for months, who reported a caller with a scratchy voice threatening to slit their throats.
When the Fircrest, Wash., police tried to find the culprit, the calls were traced back to the Kuykendalls' own phones -- even when they were turned off.It got worse. The Kuykendalls and two other Fircrest families told ABC News that they believe the callers are using their cell phones to spy on them. They say the hackers know their every move: where they are, what they're doing and what they're wearing. The callers have recorded private conversations, the families and police said, including a meeting with a local detective.

"The Watcher"

After moving into their $1.3 million dream home, a New Jersey family started receiving creepy death threats from someone who identified themselves as "The Watcher." As CBS News reported earlier this year:

Since moving in, the owners said they have received numerous letters from the mysterious person. "The Watcher" claimed the home "has been the subject of my family for decades," and "I have been put in charge of watching and waiting for its second coming," Castro reported. The new owners have several children, and other letters asked, "Have they found out what's in the walls yet?" and "I am pleased to know your names now, and the name of the young blood you have brought to me."
The family was forced to flee from their home and later filed a lawsuit against the previous owners.

Issei the Cannibal

In 1974, 24-year-old Wako University student Issei Sagawa allegedly followed a German woman to her home in Tokyo, Japan, broke into her apartment while she was sleeping, and attempted to cut a piece of flesh off her body to consume. When she awoke, she reportedly fought him and he was later captured by the police. According to a 2012 Vice documentary that covered Issei's bizarre story, he was mistakenly charged with attempted rape and his wealthy father paid the victim a settlement outside of court to have the charges dropped.
Seven years later, in 1981, he allegedly committed a murder in France—shooting and eating a fellow University student, Renée Hartevelt. Issei creepily documented the entire experience with photographs and he was captured by authorities once again while attempting to dump the rest of her body in the Bois de Boulogne lake. He was deported back to Japan and committed to a mental institution. For reason unknown, his psychologists in Japan declared that he was sane. Furthermore, a legal technicality involving the French government refusing to turn over the documents from his case meant that his murder charges were dropped completely. He checked himself out of the mental hospital and has reportedly been walking the streets as a free man ever since. Issei has even become a controversial celebrity, writing over 20 books. According to Japan Today, he most recently fantasized about an unnamed TV actress, saying:
"I'll catch a glimpse of her thigh and think, 'That sure looks tasty.' But I don't feel like I actually want to eat it. As I accomplished the act of cannibalism once, there's no meaning to maintaining the desire for it anymore. In my book, I wrote that it [human flesh] was tasty, but that was not really true; I'd much rather eat Matsuzaka (Kobe) beef. But because I'd desired to consume human flesh for so long, I'd managed to convince myself that it would necessarily be delicious."
Issei Sagawa was also referenced in the Rolling Stones song "Too Much Blood," with the lyrics reading: "And when he ate her he took her bones/To the Bois de Boulogne." He is currently 73 years old and continues to live in Kawaski City, Japan. To this day, no one knows why France did not allow Japan to give him a trial.

2023.05.28 02:03 Junior_Cress2828 Wholesome bab moments from today:

So today I took Hope, my new rainbow axolotl, to Target and Walmart on the bus to look at the (laughably tiny) pride sections. Tbh I just wanted to see my local target's pride section before the company was able to pull back a bunch of the items because of people making threats. What a world we live in :') To be honest it was mostly shopped clean BUT they did have these tiny kids overalls that were black with a little rainbow that said "be kind" and they were SO CUTE and the smallest size was 3 months (meaning with some minor adjustments it probably would have fit a standard 16 inch build a bear. If I would've brought my rainbow frog instead of my axolotl I would've tried it on him to see if it fit but it was very near build a bear size and it was 12 bucks (the same price as like, actual build a bear clothes) and I thought I should mention that here.
The section was pretty picked clean which is fine but here's the part that made me really happy. I saw a woman, probably in her 40s, ditch her husband about 4 aisles away and run full-speed towards me because she saw my axolotl in my cart. "IS THAT AN AXOLOTL?!? THATS SO CUTE!" I made eye contact with her husband, who she literally just abandoned mid-conversation to see my build a bear, and I held up my axolotl and said "Yeah! Its from build a bear isnt it cute?" And she gave me the biggest smile and went "You put a carrying strap on it! That's so clever!" I nearly thought she was gonna TACKLE me with how fast she came at me out of nowhere.
And I of course went and browsed the books and toy section (because I'm a grown adult who can't resist the call of manga and squishmallows and manga was 20% off so I got my hero academia vol. 1 and 2 yesssss) and I rolled my cart past this woman with two small children and the little boy gasped and pointed and went "Mommy look at her stuffed animal she brought shopping!!" And the mother looked at me, and she had the judgmental sort of face that said "I'm not gonna say anything negative about you in front of my children because that's bad parenting but I don't agree with your personal choices" Which was EXTREMELY FUNNY TO ME because her kid looked starstruck as they rolled past me.
When I got on the bus on my way home, the only people on the bus was an elderly couple at the front of the bus. An old man and an old woman. And I got on the bus and the old lady nudged her husband and pointed at me. "Lookit that cute little purse she got on. I want a cute little teddy-bear purse like that." And her husband smiled and chuckled.
Long story short don't be afraid to bring your build a bear out in public you'll be surprised that the compliments outnumber the confused/judgmental looks.

2023.05.28 01:53 Aflamann Ukrainian Store Haul

I went to Wonder Foods in Bucks County Pennsylvania and they had a small but interesting selection. Got some Riga Gold smoked sprats in oil for $2.99 each, Bandi sprats in oil for $2.99, and Foie de Morue for $1.99. There's lots of reviews here for these, so I'm ready to try them.
Off topic, but I also picked up a tin of Podravka Croatian pork pate for the heck of it. Along with a selection of candy and chocolates, because of course.
Here's my questions for the rest of you, though.
I picked up a tin of "Premium Food Trout In Own Juice" which is a product of Armenia. RTG sells it:
https://rainbowtomatoesgarden.com/index.php/product/premium-food-l-armenia-trout-in-wate
Also, Euro Taste Foods sprats in oil, labed as a product of Ukraine, which appears to be a house brand of this place.
https://usarestaurants.info/explore/united-states/new-york/erie-county/amherst/euro-taste-foods-and-deli-716-693-0507.htm
Does anyone know about these tins? I'm curious what to expect before I dig in.
If you happen to be in Bucks County, look them up. It's a tiny store but packed to the gills with interesting Eastern European food. They had a few more tins of fish besides these. King Oscars, but I can get those in my supermarket. Also sprats in tomato sauce, but I prefer oil. Also canned sturgeon, but I get especially concerned about buying that unless I'm sure it's sustainable, and it's too hard to know from foreign tins I can't read. Lots of sausages, deli items, pierogies, cheeses, and things I can't identify.

2023.05.27 23:21 brodlock2 The Defense Of Brandon Presley: Part 1

The Defense Of Brandon Presley: Part 1
Brandon Presley, currently in the Mississippi Public Service Commission, has a chance at winning in 2023. Lets explore the reasons why.

Section 1: Campaigning
Brandon Presley, has decided to go to every county in MS, as a attempt to get all of the votes he can do. Presley, has also stated that he would bring Medicaid expansion across the state, where around 2/3rds agree that Medicaid Expansion should exist. He has labeled himself as the common man for MS at times, and has bipartisanship support, as he went towards the golf coast and was welcomed by many republicans, independents, and democrats. He has attacked Reeves for the corruption he has done, such as what happened with Brett Favre. He has stated he will end corruption as gov, and much more. I believe one of his slogans are: "War On Corruption"
https://preview.redd.it/gkgsv0a8uf2b1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=07793f7735ce8499911c0e7a891b682332662f10
Section 2: Tate Reeves
Tate Reeves, in 2019 won by only 5 points against Attorney General Jim Hood. This was all before the scandals about him came out, and multiple other stuff. Tate Reeves has also failed to use Social Media Effectively, While Brandon Presley has made social media campaign posts, which gives Presley the edge. Meanwhile, Reeves hasnt done anything about Medicaid Expansion pretty much in the poorest state.

Section 3: Political Positions (Brandon Presley)
Brandon Presley, Has said himself that he is a Populist, FDR-Billy McCoy Democrat. He Endorsed Bush in 2004. Brandon Presley has also said that he would want Medicaid Expansion, and has Moderate or even conservative social views, which fit along MS Voters, which are mainly religious. For Example, he is Pro life "with the exception of rape" and "life of the mother". As Mayor, he cutted taxes, something conservatives like.

Section 4: Other Benefits
Brandon Presley, Cousin Of Elvis Presley, has many more things in stock to win. For Example, The exact day that he announced to run, Bennie Thompson Endorsed Him. Brandon Presley is also in a great place in the state, where he is excelling in rural places. In 2019, No republican ran against him which shows his popularity. Presley also has a advantage in the area he serves in. He has done many great things in the rural area where he serves, such as increasing internet availability there.

In Conclusion, Brandon presley should be able to win this election.

2023.05.27 21:47 stagehand1029 63M (M4F) My Cousin Barb

63M (M4F) MY COUSIN
kiss her lips, like gentle rain ferocity the storm, passion unleashed *Johnny Oneball
When I was ? I had been sniffing my mother's underwear for several years, she knew it, I knew my mother was literally giving me free access to her underwear, and I was the happiest kid on the block. Apart from one woman who I babysat for her son, Annie taught me to lick her pussy, I was still a virgin.
That changed the summer of my ?th year. My incredibly beautiful cousin, Barbara, had lost her husband. He, unfortunately, drowned in a fishing accident. A shock to all, my cousin was alone with three young son's, the oldest being 5, followed by twins, just 3 years old.
Barb called my mom and asked if she could take me up north, where we grew up, alongside the river. Her parents, my parents, took us every summer. Barbara was trying to heal. Make better memories for her boys, I'm sure. My mom, of course, said "sure, as long as he wants to". And I did. I love going to the Au Sable river to this very day!
I'm 63… reflecting on something that sparked a memory, today at a family funeral, and Barb was in attendance. We hugged, with the knowledge of our past. She always has that special smile, reserved for me, we hug tightly, closer with meaningful adoration.
The weekend arrived and my cousin picked me up, and we headed north. A two hour drive, the family retreat is waiting. As we headed north, her boys fell asleep and we chatted. I asked Barb, why don't we stay at your dad's cabin, located just less than 2 miles from the river? ( my uncle had a few bucks) Barbara said that she wanted her sons to have her memories of growing up, taking a holiday by the river, and camping.
My cousin at that time, is the apple of my extremely large family's eye. She's a strikingly beautiful brunette, tall and slim, gorgeous, and recently widowed. Me, I'm thinking about the opportunity to sniff her panties. I'm (young). I know my place, I'm going to babysit, let Barb get away, my job is to help her have a good time, set up camp, do the menial tasks, and allow her to relax. In the process, helping her heal. My instructions were clear, my mom made them very clear, whatever Barbie wanted, I was to "make it happen"
We arrived up north early Friday afternoon, set up camp and went to the beach. A lagoon on the backwaters of one of the many dams on the river, surrounded by highlands. Barb was wearing a black one piece bathing suit. She hadn't trimmed her thick black bush, I couldn't stop staring! I tried, but I just couldn't. The boys played in the shallows, I noticed she was crying, not outright blabbing but quietly struggling with the fact that her husband drowned in water. We were at the beach… her first encounter with life after the fact. I really didn't know what to do, so I touched her shoulders and said "I'm sorry".
We returned to camp, ate dinner and had a bonfire. Roasted marshmallows, the boys fell asleep. We called it a night.
In the morning, Barb had her clothes already on the clothes line… a pair of white underwear (oh fuck) hanging, blowing gently in the breeze. I'm making plans to do what I do best, smell them bad boys, properly! Rinsed out, they were not that… they smelled of river water. White granny undies hanging on a clothes line, how could I get her panties alone? I couldn't! What do I do? Improvise you perverted fools…. I would walk around camp, always going under the clothes line, letting her panties rub over my face, I did this several times.
As night fell, the boys went to sleep and eventually Barb said, hey John, I need to shave my legs, could you hold the flashlight? (yessss) "I sure can Barb" I exclaimed! I knew I was about to get a show, we went into her tent… "Don't look John". Now, of course I was "not looking" she stripped to her underwear, it's sorta dark, she was beautiful standing there in just her underwear, "oh dear, I left my bathing suit on the clothesline John, could you go get it please?" My mom was great at forgetting her whatever, ( know what's going on)… "of course Barb" I fetched her garment. When I returned, she was completely naked, so I walked in. The most beautiful woman, I held out my hand, her eyes were staring at my wandering eyes
John, have you ever seen a woman? she asked… I replied " I have Barbie, I've seen my mom, and my sister." I didn't tell her I already knew how to please a woman (Anne taught me) "but never this close up" she giggled. I need to trim my public hairs John, I need you to hold the flashlight, can you do that? (yes, she said public hairs) Barbara put on her bathing suit, her nipples were hard, like my young dick! She took the old school razor and dipped it in the washbowl, lathered her pubic area, legs, and began shaving… I made damn sure the flashlight was on her pussy!
Barbara began to talk. I'm just, I'm lonely John, since my husband died (she said his name but screw yall, too personal) I'm sorry I replied. "I get so lonely" I reached out, touching her shoulder, Barbara literally flinched at my touch, honestly, I was ahhh, I wasn't (as I reflect) I really didn't know what to do… then she said, "I saw you today Johnny, smelling my underwear, on the clothesline"… I uhhh… I'm sorry Barbie… I uhhh… "no John, it's OK, I just, I…" what? Barb, I said, " It made me horny John, do you understand?" " "I saw you, and I'm lonely…. Im… do you like me johnny?"
Guys… I'm (legal)at the time, and as today sparked this memory, I really didn't know empathy, I didn't understand women, I basically didn't know jack shit! What I DID know was, I loved sniffing panties, and jacking off, I licked one gal, Annie, who taught me how, but by no means did I have the knowledge I possess today…
I answered yes, of course I like you, again she was,her eyes were wet (her pussy was glistening) yes Barbie, I think your so pretty, she grabbed me and hugged me… she kissed me! Now, I'm (legal), inexperienced and not really scared, but surely I remembered what my mom said " make sure you take care of you cousin, son"... what I never expected was about to happen.
I was really close to her, she turned and said, " I need this, Johnny, do you understand?" yes Barb, I understand. "nobody can ever know" , she pulled me in and began kissing me… I didn't really know how… I was learning on the fly… Mmmmmmñnn she moaned, I wanted to cum right then…. Barbie grabbed my hand and took it straight to her crotch, mmmmmnnmmmnn… ohhh.. john…. she convulsed…. Ohhhhb Johnny im…. ahhh i…i…..I'm gonna. Cummmmmm!!!! I've never cum in my shorts… not that quick.
My cousin Barb was breathing so heavily, she was crying, "I'm so disgusting johnny" I heard her say, NO Barb, you're not at all disgusting I said. "Ohhh, thank you ohhh Johnny…" we lay in her tent. Barb fell asleep, cold ass water underneath us, I just took her underwear, put them to my nose and jacked off… blowing a massive load onto my belly quickly falling asleep next to my cousin. In the morning, (if you have never) breakfast was the best, the smell of fresh brewed coffee, eggs, bacon and taters, Barbra was glowing, her boys eating, I said "it's a great morning", she smiled…
Today's funeral reminded me of something I have forgotten… I wasn't supposed to tell. When I saw my cousin across the room, and we smiled at each other…
How could I not remember? *he smiles
As always, give it the love it deserves people can't say the truth… ages… but yeah, this happened, edited by mods… shhhhhh…

2023.05.27 19:48 STONECOLD96 Course Recs in SD

Howdy fellow plastic chuckers. I live in San Diego and am looking for some local course recommendations. I’ve played all the public courses I can find on UDisc. I’m looking for any info on some fun private courses in the county. I just don’t have the time to drive out to Mountain Pride or LaMi so I’m trying to spice up my weekly course rotation with something in the county. Any good recommendations?

You read that right imagine if there was a golf course where every hole will be a par 5. To shoot par on the course you would have to shoot 90. Would you play at that course if it was public and existed?

2023.05.27 17:27 TheOriginalSheffters Golf ball broke window and course is refusing to pay.

House (England) backs onto a public (council owned) golf course. Ball came over the garden fence and broke a window. Emailed the golf course and they say it’s nothing to do with them and has to be claimed off individual golfer. Golfer is obviously long gone never to be seen.
Surely the golf course can’t deny all responsibility?
Thanks!
Edited to add its in England.

2023.05.27 16:27 lizziepalooza My Response to the "High Grass & Weeds Program" Threatening Letter

My Response to the
(Pic of my gorgeous, meadow-like backyard haven that can only even be seen by one other house, taken today, eight days after my "violation" was issued.)
Dear Sirs, Madams, et al. of the High Weeds & Grass Program:
I am the owner and primary resident, along with my husband, at my address. This past week I received a violation notification from your fine board, indicating that I have unleashed “an environmental public nuisance … Specifically, vegetation which has not been cut, mowed or otherwise removed” that has attained a height of “twelve (12) inches or more.”
I would first like to request clarification, along with an extension on the time period you’ve suggested before the city comes on to my property and removes plants that are residing here quite intentionally. I feel it’s necessary to protest the vague distinction of “vegetation” that has achieved a “height of twelve (12) inches or more” that could only be offending a very few people in the small cul-de-sac in which I live. Virtually every other yard in my neighborhood has vegetation in the forms of trees, bushes, and other lawn ornamentation well over twelve inches, and I myself have a multitude of trees, bushes, and so forth that fall into the realm of “vegetation” that cannot reasonably fall under the quite specific measurement of twelve inches. I would like a list of the specific vegetation you wish for me to remove, which I think is quite a reasonable request before you demand money from me for forcing unwanted changes onto property I own and pay ever-increasing taxes on.
Furthermore, I’d like to address the fact that I have very specific intentions for the future of my yard and property that don’t include the almost constant noise pollution many of my neighbors in this same cul-de-sac produce with unnecessary and excessive use of gasoline-powered lawn tools that not only disrupt the natural habitat we’re lucky enough to enjoy in this still-secluded part of Marion County, but that also make this otherwise haven of nature and beauty into a constant cacophony of chainsaws, lawn mowers, edgers, and blowers. I’d like to point out that my neighbors allow feral cats to wander around the neighborhood—a practice that is far more disruptive in a small ecosystem like the one we enjoy here than allowing a few plants to take their natural course for a few months of the year. (I can send along a number of studies and articles about the nuisance feral cats create. Here is just one from wildlife.org: https://wildlife.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Feral-Cats.pdf.)
I’m quite happy to produce any number of scientific texts and references, in whatever form you’d like, that show leaving a property alone for the first two years of ownership is the best way to learn the natural landscape with which you’re working and create a productive plan for moving forward with a regenerative natural landscape that doesn’t require constant upkeep and that also provides valuable ecosystem protection that’s far more important than a collection of six houses having perfectly manicured lawns, at the expense of all the peace and quiet we should enjoy every day. I’m sure the landscapers who offered to mow my lawn for the incredibly reasonable price of $1,085 as a first payment and then $300/ mo into perpetuity are making sure to keep selling that expectation to my neighbors, but I hope to demonstrate a different way to be in the future. After all, we’re already seeing effects of climate change in our state, and we all should be changing our approaches and views when it comes to the same-old ways of performing lawn care.
I bought my house in December of 2020. The past two summers, I’ve done minimal lawn care and have observed where the sun hits the lawn at various times of day to learn where I want to plant the native plants I’ve been studying in the meantime. This year, I’ve been participating in No-Mow May with a large collection of people in various online communities encouraging people to stop feeling the need to constantly hack away at their lawns, wasting time and money, and also making neighborhoods worse in myriad ways with noise pollution. I’d ask that a member of the High Weeds & Grass Program come spend a day in my yard and witness him- or herself how much more pleasant it is to hear birds and wind and various wildlife than it is to hear constant motors running. Within the next five years, my lawn will be highly manicured and packed full of native plants in properly delineated flowerbeds, but I’m not a rich enough person to do it in one fell swoop. I will work toward making improvements over this long holiday weekend, as I’d planned to do anyway, but I’d still like a review that explains far more specifically what’s wrong with my lawn.
I don’t expect us to be in disagreement once we have a better understanding of one another’s intentions, but I’m shocked that in a city as progressive as Indianapolis and a state as conservative as Indiana we can’t appreciate both environmental truths and the importance of respecting personal property.
Please don’t assume that every person with a bit of a messy yard is lazy or neglectful or unloving of their property. I love my house and the land I own, and even though it’s incredibly beautiful to me with all my vegetation over twelve inches, I am willing to bring it in line with expectations once they’re more clearly outlined. I’d also like to remind the city AND my neighbors to have some grace and consideration for several factors: This is the first home my husband and I have owned. He and I lived our entire adult lives in apartments in the city before we moved here—over half our lives at this point. Lawn care hasn’t been something we’ve had to fit into our days, and also—we don’t have years of equipment built up. We had to replace our entire HVAC in the first year of owning our home, which limited the amount we’ve been able to invest in tools that others take for granted. Times are difficult. Inflation is unbelievably high. Wages are low. People are struggling and suffering. I find it hard to believe that a few stray plants in my yard are causing “an environmental public nuisance” to anyone who doesn’t need to check their priorities. No one comes and shows you how to properly care for your lawn. There’s a steep learning curve, and we’re still on it.
Please let me know what specifics you require of me. You’re welcome to come to my door (with a properly made appointment), email me directly, or give me a call instead of sending me vague, threatening letters in the mail.
My regards—
