Just going over it, not sure it makes sense -
Chazz is in a boy band in the late '90s He's then going on MySpace (so presumably in the mid-'00s at this point), trolling people and discouraging them from their own music career Joe's daughter receives these messages and attempts suicide, ends up in a coma for 9 years At the end of that 9 years, Joe meets Chazz and develops his plan - they're then together for 9 years
If you count back from present day (presumed to be 2022 or 2023), you'd have the daughter's death/start of the relationship in 2013 or 2014. Joe says he "had her phone" after she died so he was able to trace who Chazz was... Even if his daughter had a smartphone in 2014 (certainly possible as they were widespread at that point), what's the likelihood that there was any trace of old MySpace messages on it? MySpace had been a dead duck for a long time by then (it was basically no longer used/had been supplanted by Twitter, Facebook etc), and I'm sure Reece and Steve know that. Are we meant to think that the abuse by Chazz continued on other forms of social media into the 2010s? There were so many references to passages of 9 years of time, and the specificity of the "late '90s" and "MySpace" references that I feel I've missed something in the timeline. If Chazz had been in the band in the late '00s and then became an early Twitter troll, it would make more sense (though maybe that wouldn't scan with Reece's perceived present day age - even though he seemed to be playing younger than Steve).
Am I just overthinking this/missing something here?

There's a concept in children's literature that's come up as part of the unfortunate book-banning epidemic happening in US schools, and that's the philosophy of window books and mirror books. Basically, it's important for kids to both see themselves reflected in books (mirrors) as well as read books that give them glimpses into other experiences (windows).
I saw a twitter thread from Steve Ammidown recently on how the media sometimes portrays romance as window books for straight men so they can learn what women want, and it got me thinking about this concept in relation to my own reading.
Personally I read more window books, it's one of my favorite things to learn about someone else's experience through the frame of familiar romance tropes. It's amazing to read a good mirror book, though - I especially appreciate some of the mental health rep I've read where I can see myself or my loved ones reflected in the character. It's heartwarming to feel seen and know you're not alone.
Thinking about what you read, do you gravitate towards mirror books where you can closely relate to the main character? Or window books where you're learning about an experience different from yours? Play with your server

You’re familiar with the server you used during the course, so keep working with it. Maybe uninstall Apache2 and install NGINX, a competing webserver. Keep a running stat on ssh “attackers”. Whatever. A free AWS will last a year, and a $5/mo server should be something you can easily justify.

Add services that you’ll use

You should now be capable of following tutorials on installing and running your own instance of Minecraft, Wordpress, WireGuard VPN, or Mediawiki. Expect to have some problems – it's all good experience!

Extend your learning

Stop browsing articles on Gnome, KDE or i3 – and start checking out any articles like “20 Linux commands every sysadmin should know”. Try these out, delve into the options. Like learning a foreign vocabulary, you will only be able to use these “words” if you know them!

Certs

If you’re looking to do Linux professionally, and you don’t have an impressive CV or resume already, then you should be aiming at getting a cert. There are really just three certs/tracks that count:

• CompTIA Linux+
  
• LPI LPIC-1: Linux Administrator – Very extensive description of the coverage of their various certs/courses.
  
• Red Hat – You could spend a lot of time and money here! (but it might well pay off)
  

Even if you don’t want/need certs, the outline of the topics in these references can give you a good idea of areas to focus on in your self-learning.
