Cars, Trucks, Turbos.. Oh My! Part.7

2023.06.04 22:39 Desperate-Car-Wife Cars, Trucks, Turbos.. Oh My! Part.7

Desperate Car Wife: A Journey in the Making (part.7)
My husband's next "victim" .... A golden brown 1997 Chevy K/1500 Extended Cab
I had a feeling he'd buy this truck at some point... A buddy of his owned it and he would always make comments and cash offers whenever he saw the truck. About 3 or 4 years later my hubby finally got his wish! I still remember the night we brought it home... Unfortunately, that same night, during the wee hours, some delinquent teens went around the neighborhood and were keying cars down our street! He parked it on the street since he had planned to wash it first thing.... Hub was up early the next day, so excited to have his new baby; ready to give her a good wash and start marking his "territory" with that good 'ol "JB Treatment".. We walked out and discovered the truck had been keyed all the way from the driver's side door to the rear fender!! I can't describe how super p@##ed off he was without using a list of colorful words, but I'm sure y'all can imagine... I'm just glad I was there to help calm him down; to this very day I truly feel that had he given into his anger, he would've gone off his rocker, and that day would've been much like that famous line from Liam Neeson in Taken!! But after about an hour of watching what looked like a crazy man, pacing back and forth, looking over and over at the nearly 7' long scratch, while cursing up a storm, he managed to calm down "somewhat" and immediately ran down to AutoZone... $150 later, he had what he needed to make it as invisible as possible. It was deep in spots; the entire scratch had passed through the top coat and in some areas it was all the way to the base paint :(
Over the next year, he went over the entire body with a clay bar, compound buffed, then waxed and polished... She was easily a 10 footer for sure! Eventually he found some wheels and bought matching tires.. (He has a thing about mismatched tires LOL) She was lookin' like a pretty nice truck, so shiny and new, nearly flawless on the outside.
Side Note: I remember one night, not too long after he finished all that hard work, we were bbqing at our friend's house; the one who sold us the truck. It was well after midnight when we were finally ready to leave, (hubby was highly intoxicated), I ended up having to pull the truck out first because a huge bush was on the other side where he had backed in too close and couldn't open the passenger side door. Well he was too drunk and way too tall to try to climb over the center console thru the driver's side, so he wanted me to pull the truck out and he'd just hop in. I was like "there are branches sticking out of the bush and I think I might scratch the truck"... I insisted my hubby just pull it out a little and then I'd take over. (if anyone was gonna scratch it, I'd rather it be him!) To give some insight: there was another car parked on the driver's side, giving me very little room to work with... But he refused and said he'd guide me.. Famous. Last. Words!!!! As soon as I started to pull away, I heard scraping sounds!!!! I stopped and was sooo upset because I knew it would happen! I thought for sure he would be so p@##ed at me for scratching it! I had tears, I felt so bad!! He had just finished getting that truck looking new again and the hours of labotime spent doing so... I couldn't stop sobbing, even when he, surprisingly, wasn't mad at all!! He actually blamed himself because he made me move it.. I blame the alcohol for his chill response!!! After repeated "sorry's" and "it's okay's".. we get home and he grabs his container of Mother's compound and starts buffing out the scratch.... Next morning I looked at the spot and to my excitement, the scratch was gone... it didn't go through the top coat!! Couldn't even tell that there was ever even a scratch!!!! \Wipes sweaty forehead* What a relief that was!*
Next came the.......... you got it! The Sound system! \ insert smirky laugh here LOL **
A slimbox would just not do.. he tried, but at this point in his obsession with bass style audio, he wanted more bass. Well for those of you that don't know, more bass means not only bigger subs and bigger boxes for those subs, you also need higher quality tweeters and mids with their own amp system plus crossovers, a powerful amp just for the bass, bigger batteries (yes, that's plural), a bigger alternator, fuses galore, expensive wiring , etc... Not only is that crazy expensive to do, but it also required him to eventually remove the bench seat. I had no clue to all of this till I started going with him more often to the car audio shops. Needless to say, I was not a happy wife when it came to the price tags... I was perfectly happy with decent sound and a small sub, but something so crazy loud wasn't that big of a deal to me, however, our bank account would say otherwise LOL ... it wasn't my daily driver, so I didn't really care other than the costs for everything... he just could never be happy with the sound and continuously changed out the subs, boxes, decks, you name it... he did it more than once over on everything! So that was the first strike to this truck and I... (I know it sounds a bit harsh for a 1st strike, but I wanted a nice family vacation, not bigger and bigger subs... Remember my "limits" motto??)
I liked driving it around town, though the driver's seat was broken in the upright position, so I had to drive with a pillow behind me. (Strike 2!!) It never bothered him because he's so dang tall, and I rarely drove it as it was, so the seat wasn't a priority... Then I took it on the freeway, the steering became very loose. I don't know how to describe how it felt to me, other than it felt like it was severely out of play... My hubby never seemed to have the same issue and always would reassure me that "it's just how the truck drives''... So he hasn't messed around with the steering column at all. Well, I don't trust it or feel safe in it, so I refuse to drive it. I have had to take it on the freeway a couple more times since then and I still hate driving it... it still felt way out of whack for me; taking curvy turns was the worst, I couldn't even keep it centered in my lane! Nerves shot and blood pressure at its highest.... Strike 3!!! I absolutely hate driving that truck!!! She is a pretty thing after a good waxing, but that's as far as I take a liking to her...
$10k later, including a rebuilt tranny and 2 DIY transfer case replacements, the truck is nearly perfect in my husband's eyes.... but then the poor thing falls to vandalism once again! :( :( :( Only this time it was 2 slashed tires and a broken windshield! This time we filed a police report! But of course nothing ever came of it, unfortunately.... It was easy to replace, but costly and getting no justice after being vandalized twice (parked in the driveway the 2nd time), left us feeling sour and foul mouthed.... Now we have cameras on the driveway and street! Regardless of the vandalism, there's always something needing to be replaced it seems... this truck feels like a money pit in my mind... strike 4...
Special Note: If you have found or follow me on Twitter (DsCarWife) and come here to read my posts... I have a little treat tweet coming! Stay Tuned!
Part. 8 coming soon

2023.06.04 20:29 dnew My Firmament Critique (heavy spoilers for all Cyan games)

Before I dump on the game, let me mention a few of the places that were actually clever:
I found the game to be disappointing and frustrating, all down to three reasons:
Let's look at these, along with contrasting to early Cyan games, and notice how combining all three together makes for a poor experience.
Essentially, the only mode of interaction available is turning a knob. While this is not necessarily a game killer (Myst, for example, only has clicking something) in Firmament it is completely treated as turning a knob. That is, every time you use the adjunct, you're interacting with a manufactured bit of machinery to control power to one or the other function of what you're connecting to. This leads to a sparse range of puzzles that can be included, essentially none of which progress the narrative. And it leads to the requirement for a technical instruction manual at the start of the game.
There's no "let the water out of the chest then close the knob again so it'll float when you fill the pool." There's no compass rose or turning mirrors. There's no locks to find the combination to (fortunately, given the plot). There's no sorting of singing monkeys. There's no tempting of birds with seed pods. There's no catching of Squees. There's no summoning of Wharks. The steam generator and pipes to fill the Voltaic airship actually work logically, and there's a reason they're puzzling, unlike the steam pipes in Curievale. (I had to actually look up which world the steam pipes were in just now, which shows you how well-integrated that puzzle is.) Also, each puzzle is independent of all the others; there's no foreshadowing of what you need to know, nor cleverness of relating one puzzle to another, as was common all through Exile for example.
Almost all the puzzles (including the most frustrating) involve trying to find the next doorknob to turn; or, having found it, trying to figure out how to reach it with the one and only tool available. Occasionally there's the "let's see if I can find the hidden pathway." Almost none of them involve figuring something out based on the environment or the world building. When stuck, I found myself walking around with the adjunct out looking for some hidden doorknob to light up, or wandering into unobvious corners and walking around the edge of the playable area seeing if I missed a hidden pathway. This is compounded by the huge amount of nonsensical consistency-busting designs. (Watch any first-time playthrough and you'll see the player running all over the place looking for the next clue.)
Granted, once you figured out the solution, it was often clear in hindsight what you were supposed to have been doing.
The lack of characters, living people, conflict, narrative, etc also left the game feeling lacking. There's nobody you can interact with, almost no direction is provided as to what you should do (and no, just saying "start the Embrace" doesn't help given you have no memory of what that means), and no motivation for doing it other than some ghost tells you. The real reason you work at it is you know you're playing a game. The fact that the world is terribly inconsistent with the story, and the mentor wants you to do things she won't reveal, just compounds the problem.
The entire time I was playing, I was saying to myself "Why would this be like this?" It made the entire experience tremendously gamey. Myst and Riven didn't make you think "why would anyone do this?" Exile and Portal both had reasons for being full of puzzles, as well as a motivation for your opponent to be setting up the puzzles and for making them solvable. But Firmament should have been 10x as easy to navigate, except that wouldn't make a good game, so artificial barriers that make no sense are set in your way. This, for me, destroyed the suspension of disbelief. Especially when the ending reveals that even the things you might have thought were accidental were designed that way. Even the constructed places were designed like puzzles rather than somewhere you want your workers to be effective at working.
And then you get to the end, and it becomes even more absurd, given that everything you've seen was intentionally designed and built.
And many more I don't remember the details of.
Given Cyan's track record, one might ponder some of the inconsistencies in implementation and wonder whether they have a deeper meaning. I couldn't find any.
Compare to Myst: Myst was surreal, magical. It's expected in such situations that there will be weirdness. Nevertheless, essentially every puzzle was reasonable in its environment and grounded and somewhat predictable. Things like getting the key to the lighthouse was grounded in basic physics; things like resetting the spaceship after a mistake, or figuring out how to deduce the stoneship symbols, or raising the channelwood tree, were based on wide-spread cultural references. Where there were other puzzles, the end-goal was shown in advance, with you almost always running across the lock before being presented with the keys. The rare maze allowed you to (mostly) see where you were going several steps ahead and also told you the destination before you found it. The pointers to the story were left in conspicuous places (the note on the grass, the blue and red books). Also, the weird crap was explained in extensive world-building (heh) books in the library. Nothing (almost) was hidden just to make a puzzle harder. The solution to each puzzle was presented while you're in the puzzle trying to figure out the solution, if only you were clever or observant enough to understand it. If you wanted to get into the spaceship, you followed the wires. The elevator trick in Mechanical Age wasn't hidden; you just had to think about why the elevator didn't start right away. The most hidden thing there was the secret panels, which were secret, but still had a target drawn on them. Every place you were stymied by a lock, the lock was intentionally put there to keep natives of the land away from the books, or to keep others from using the books on Myst Island (i.e., the places of protection).
Contrast with (say) the greenhouse puzzle: first you have to figure how to get to the entrance riding the skiff, because that made so much more sense than another flight of stairs or a ladder; thank goodness the vines didn't quite close off every path. Then you have to figure out that the place you're trying to go is the other side of the planters on the same level (and not to the thing that looks like a lift or ladder), even though you can't see the other side. Then you ride the things around a while, trying to see the walkways above and below you, before realizing there's another doorknob down at the bottom; good thing they all have distinctive lights on them, eh? That doorknob can only be reached from where you're far from your goal, and from a limited number of puzzle states, then you have to work your way all the way back up, and then if you're lucky you'll have figured out how to turn the planters so you can dodge across. Sometimes you can cross on the diagonal, sometimes it's a fraction too far. And your knees don't bend, so you can't get over the foot-high plank lying on the floor. Or look at the steam pipes and heaters. You need to turn them on, and oh goody, they light up when you do. But some of the doorknobs don't glow; other sockets on the pipes aren't doorknobs they just look that way. Some of the pipes go above the surface, and you can't tell where they come back down. You then can turn on electric heaters using steam, somehow. You have to go down to turn one on, then melt some ice, then coming back up requires turning that off again. Several times you have to turn it on, then turn it off again because the valve was installed in a way that blocks the walkway. There's a valve hidden behind a grate for some reason, but fortunately your other tool can go through grates and the walkway passes by quite close. Then you have to turn on a valve, loop around to go two levels down, turn on the second valve that you can't get to because the steampunk builders thought it was a good idea to install valves that block the pathway, come back up far enough to turn on the third valve, go back down to turn on the heater, come back up and turn off the first valve, then you can progress. And when you've worked the steam power all the way to the end, what do you get? A steam-powered machine? No, just the same electric lift as in every other realm. Good thing, because you had to turn the steam off again to get to the other side of the path. The only reason for the steam pipes is to make a puzzle that somehow runs electric heaters off steam pressure, with electricity at both ends of the path already. Oh, and there's a hundred meters of gangway in loops and ramps in the water, instead of, you know, a path from one side to the other.
Compare to Riven: Riven is grounded like Firmament. It's not particularly supernatural. The stuff is mechanical, not magical. If someone disappears from a one-door room, there's probably a hidden switch. Granted, "fire marbles" aren't explained, and why there would even need to be clues to get into Tay is unclear story-wise, but OK, combinations to locks need to be written where you can find them. And the mine cart going under water was just Rule Of Cool. Everything else makes sense. Secret passages are only secret from one side. Doors are locked between where Ghen moves and where natives move, and locked on the side where Ghen is. When there's a "hidden" passage that's hard to see, the people who created it leave a pointer (usually a dagger). When there's a hidden door, you can see into the adjacent room so you know to look for the door. There's no case of "wander all over the level holding the 'show me interaction points' control, trying to figure out if there's a button that enables some other part of the level to work." There's no wondering whether you need an upgrade to even start working on this puzzle. If there's a hidden button to make something work, you can follow the wire to it (the fan), or see the pathway over there, or see the room through the window (book assembly island dome), or notice from where you start there's only one other path of many open (the lake sub), or etc. Look at the design of the wood pulp boiler vs the sulphur mixer. And again, the reason for all the locks are explained in-game. Riven is a masterclass in adventure game design because the puzzles all make sense in the context and story of the game, all of which we see before we need to know it, and there's almost nothing arbitrary about the puzzles.
Contrast with Firmament: Firmament looks realistic, but is surreal in detail. The entire place acts like one giant puzzle, with a dozen unintuitive steps to get from each place to the next. It has knobs that can control things remotely, but uses that capability to put things out of reach instead of making things easier, even tho the only people with adjuncts would be people who are supposed to be working the machines. It has machinery on rails constructed too close to other features to let the cars pass (like the first crane blocked by rocks, the second crane blocked by ice, the bubble car blocked by the ice, etc), which is even more silly when you find out the cliffs aren't natural either. It uses complex machinery of all different kinds to accomplish the same ends; the skiff vs the first crane vs the second crane vs the sulfur trains; the conveyance pods vs the bubble cars vs (cripes) riding blocks of ice and hopping off hopefully before you reach the shredder blades. There are places where simple stairs or bridges could be built, but instead there's a half dozen baroque processes to get from one place to another place a literal stone's throw away (see "riding blocks of ice" as well as the pointless skiff and the pointless steam pipes and ....). There's several kinds of power supplies which have to be turned on, each of which powers only the bits of puzzle blocking your way. There are innumerable doorknobs placed in cages where you have to be at the right angle to fire them with no obvious reason for the cage walls to be blocking you from there (see "riding blocks of ice"). Even at the end you have to walk entirely around the axis twice to unlock a door you're 20 feet from when you come out into space.
Compare to Exile: Exile is surreal, but this time it's intentionally designed by its creator to be surreal. Each age has a purpose and a theme, and it looks designed (unlike Myst's ages). The design of each Age gives you clues to the solutions of the puzzles, and then plays into the endgame. You have an ongoing story that tells you the motivations of the people involved. You have a reason you're suddenly thrown into the situation alone. (As in Myst and Riven, for that matter.) No need for the cliche loss of memory or untrustworthy narrator (both features of Firmament, both described in the opening monologue). There's a reason the puzzles are more difficult than you'd think necessary. The same reason is why there are clues how to solve them scattered about. And you're shown the ways in which the puzzles were made more difficult, which helps tell the story; nothing is randomly broken by accident. When you solve an age, you get a beautiful reward of getting to see the age laid out before you to admire. The ending is fulfilling, and in your hands, left to you to figure out how to bring about some solution or the best solution.
Contrast with Firmament: No setup other than a monologue telling you "you remember nothing, I might lie, go do puzzles I mean maintenance work." The puzzles are arbitrary-progress-blockage puzzles. There's very little where you have to think about what the world is like to make things work. The ages don't feel any different from each other, because every one is "figure out where the path is, where the goal is, and then try to find where you can reach the doorknob from." There's no puzzle having to do with ice on Curievale (other than the heaters, which are just different forms of doors). There's no puzzle having to do with plants on St. Andrew. Even places where you might have figured it out, it was tedious rather than clever; for example, the batteries were painted colors. Imagine how it would have been if you could see into the water and each post had a different number of batteries wired to it? I don't really want to spend time doing linear algebra to figure out puzzles during my gaming hour. And when you do solve a puzzle, half the time you're inside a building or vehicle where you can't see what's happening; the shutters only open once, the bubble cars obscure most of the view, engaging the Embrace doesn't make it obvious the doors are opening in the spire, etc.
How could I have done better? Well, I don't design games for a living, but I've been playing adventure games since they were coded in FORTRAN and printed their text on paper. There are a few obvious places the puzzles could have been made more enjoyable.
Anyway, that's my rambling. Hope you enjoyed. :)

2023.06.04 18:35 dpccreating Sail boat wiring

My brother completely rewired an ocean going sailboat from the 70's. He bought all new electrical equipment followed the directions and for an amature he did very professional job.
But for some some reason the shore power connection a 3 wire 30 amp twist lock plug, has a barred 30 amp breaker on Power and Neutral.
Just curious why a breaker on both?

2023.06.04 17:50 Ill_Face_8641 Wire sizing/breaker question

I currently have a dual fuel range (electric oven, gas cooktop) on a 40amp GE (modern panel, 2013 install) that is wired with 8-3 copper nm-b. I am looking to change to a 36" induction range that specs to require a 50 amp circuit.

In looking at the wiring chart I see that nmb needs to use the 60 degree column so (please correct me if I am wrong here) I cannot just swap in a 50 amp breaker and 15-50r both rated to use the 75 degree column. If I can that seems like it would be much easier.

So now I have to decide will it be a problem to use a 40 amp breaker on a stove that asks for a 50 amp circuit. If i have 40 amps on 240 that should allow for 9600 watts, right? The oven has a 3300 watt element, while 4 of the burners have an 1,850 watt element but they say "3,000 on boost" (I need to figure out what this means) and then the large center element is 2600 or 3700 on boost. *edit* boost basically is a boil feature. It can only be activated for 10 minutes and then it turns off. It would seem I could use boost on 2 burners simultaneously at 3,000 watts plus the oven at 3,300 and be fine.

Even if I had a 50 amp circuit that would still only be 12000 watts available, right? So basically (not like I would ever need to) if I had the oven on and all the burners on high (ignoring this boost feature) that would draw 13,300 watts and the breaker would definitely trip.

Now if I don't use the center burner (history tells me i never will) and the oven and still have a ridiculous amount of cooking happening with 4 burners on at 1850 each that is 7400 watts which shouldn't trip a 40 amp breakers. So if baking using the 3300 and 3 burners at 1850 which is quite a lot of cooking I should not have any nuisance tripping.

Thoughts? Thank you in advance!

2023.06.04 17:38 sammyistheguy How do I power tweeters from head unit?

I am upgrading my door speakers to 4 mids and I have a 4 channel amp.
To my understanding I am able to power my mids from the amp and power the tweeters from my head unit. My head unit is the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X704.
I am using factory wiring for the mids and purchase a 9-wire connector to power it from the amp to the head unit.
How do I power the tweeters to the built in amp on the head unit? Would I need to run new wires for the tweeters?
Attached is a picture of the back of the head unit. If you can describe which wires to power the tweeters from that would be great

2023.06.04 17:23 dtevo81 Advice Needed for Sonos / B&W Setup (Music and Movies)

Hey all.
I'm new to Sonos, looking for some help putting together a system for music and movies in our primary listening/viewing space.
My current setup is B&W CM series (5.1) running through a Denon s930h. I got married this last December, and we're trying to update our living room furniture so that it looks like grown-ups live here. 😂 The receiver and center channel speaker are posing some problems with our preferred furniture, so I thought it would be nice to switch to an Arc with some complimentary components.
In trying out the Arc, I was actually blown away by what it can do during movies, even on its own... but I was, not surprisingly, underwhelmed by the comparatively narrow stereo image and lack of airiness for music. And that was without even connecting the turntable.
If I had to summarize my goal succinctly it would be to "Have a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience for music and movies without the need for a traditional A/V receiver or bulky center channel."
So, here's what I'm considering now.
I have a few questions:
  1. In the above setup, is it possible to specify which speakers are used for which activities? For example, even if using a streaming music source, like Spotify via HDMI, could I have presets with the Sonos system to only use the stereo pair? What about when listening to records through the line-in?
  2. If no, would everything just play through the mains + Arc by default? Would that sound muddy?
  3. Would using a pair of Era 100s or Fives as mains significantly reduce the complexity/tuning of my setup? (If 100s, I'd still need a way to connect the turntable)
  4. If all my devices are running into the HDMI in on the Amp, would I still get Atmos output from the Arc for Atmos content?
  5. Is it possible to use a second Amp in the system to power traditional B&W rears which I've already run speaker wire for? I'm open to using Sonos speakers as rears, but I'd need to get power to the rear locations, which are already wired for the B&Ws.
  6. Probably evident from the questions above, I'm just dipping my toe in the Sonos ecosystem waters and not really sure how all this works. Are there better options than what I'm considering to accomplish my objective here? Are there other setups I should be considering?
TiA.

Can anybody advise whether my battery needs replacing on my MacBook Air?
Hi all, My MacBook is no longer holding charge - it stays on when plugged in but there is no increase in charge and I cannot even turn it on when it’s not plugged in. Every number under battery information is at 0 - just wondering if I can just replace the battery or if it’s a more complex issue? Thank you :)

2023.06.04 17:03 mktosell Atoto F7 - FM radio signal issues

I experience FM radio signal issues on my Atoto F7 unit. Everything is fine when I'm parked, but issues start while driving. It's especially noticable when surrounded by high buildings, lines of trees or even in heavy traffic. My car has factory 12V antenna amplifier, it's connected to power antenna wire from unit (tried amp power wire, but it's the same), and amplifier is getting 12V (tested with multimeter). Worth to mention I had to use Honda/Toyota/Nissan adapter to DIN antenna plug. Everything is properly grounded, connection is secure, I also shielded all the cables with fabric tape.
I'm not talking here about usual white noise/static/crackling. Sound/volume is usually lowered or there is loss of high or mid tones, like severe compression. At the same time there is no loss of RDS information or ST sign.
Dx/Local settings don't help, neither changing the region. Contacted support, they say it is normal and they use the same tuner for all of their models. Amazon reviews usually don't mention anything regarding the FM signal, I presume because of people don't listen to the radio much. On some reviews I saw that the FM signal is excellent. I don't experience issues with sound on streamed music from my phone.
Has anyone opened the unit maybe? Does anyone know what could cause this issue?

If I were to see these earphones for the first time without knowing the price, I would easily say they could be worth more than $200 USD. The housing is designed with an aluminum alloy which feels very solid to the touch and has well-hidden vents that relieve pressure build up in the ear canal. The driver used in the S12 PRO is a 14.8mm single sided planar magnetic driver.

Summary of how the driver works: This type of driver works through a thin metal diaphragm with an array of embedded "wires." On each side of the diaphragm are magnets with opposite polarities. When connected, the current passing through the wires generates a magnetic field that interacts with the permanent magnetic fields of both magnets, creating undulating movement in the diaphragm thus producing sound.
The included modular cable is of very good quality. It is built with silver-plated monocrystalline copper and has 4 cores, each consisting of 98 strands. Its connector type is 0.78mm 2-pin with interchangeable terminations for 2.5, 3.5, and 4.4mm. One criticism I have in this regard is that the cable is heavier than average (by quite a bit, in my opinion), and it can be uncomfortable during long sessions. Also, the plastic cable earguides that go over the ears are uncomfortable, and I would have preferred if they were not included.

The number of silicone and foam tips is a very positive aspect (9 pairs in total!). I mostly used my favorite ones, which are the wide-bore tips, but the foam tips feel of good quality for those who need isolation.

The comfort of the S12 PRO was just okay for me: as I mentioned before, the plastic guides are not of my preference and the heavy cable doesn't help that much either. However, when they are properly positioned in the outer ear, they seal decently (it's not the best seal, but it provides enough isolation), and I had to readjust them only a few times. It's worth noting that they protrude a bit, so I wouldn't recommend using them while lying down.
One small aspect I'm going to add in this case is the driving power needed for the S12 PRO. It's known that planar magnetic drivers can be difficult to amplify, but that's not the case with this LETSHUOER set. When I used them with my smartphone (directly into 3.5mm input), I only needed to increase the volume up to 50% to reach a comfortable level when listening to music.

Frequency response description

  • Slight V-shaped signature
  • Subbass and bass above neutral
  • Mid frequencies with a more subdued character but without losing prominence
  • Treble somewhat lively but peaky and with good extension

Subjective sound description

Bass
Despite what the measurements indicate, I found the a sub-bass and bass near neutral. The bass have good definition but lack impact for basshead users.
In songs like "Paris" by MOON (Hotline Miami soundtrack), the sub-bass has a strong presence, and you can feel it “deep within you” throughout the entire song as it takes the spotlight. The same happens in "Xanny" by Billie Eilish, where during the chorus, those sub-bass frequencies can be felt “down to the bones”.
On the other hand, in "Back Around" by Tiesto, I experienced what I mentioned earlier: the impact of the bass during the drop leaves me wanting 1-2dB more for EDM songs. However, this reference tuning is particularly good for other genres as we'll see next.

Mids
As someone who listens to various Heavy Metal/Rock artists and different orchestras, I consider myself familiar with the sound of string instruments. In the case of "Meet Your Maker" by In Flames, the electric guitars have a good sense of texture in each note and avoid being piercing to the ear.
Switching genres, in "Yellow" from Coldplay's concert in Buenos Aires 2017, from minute 2 to 2:56, the electric guitar accompanies the song very gently, only to reappear seconds later. In this chaotic harmony, where instruments and the lead singer's voice come together, you can clearly distinguish each individual sound. Chris Martin's voice has a natural timbre to my ears, and both female and male voices have good weight in the region.
Lastly, in "Nessun dorma!" performed by Pavarotti, the Italian's voice is out of this world. There is particularly good articulation between him and the orchestra (choristers, violins, horns, trumpets, piano, etc.).

Treble
Again, the graph shows quite pronounced peaks in the 2.5 kHz and 8 kHz regions, yet the previous song by In Flames with continuous cymbal splashes did not come across as piercing at all.
Furthermore, in classical music such as Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Mozart's "Divertimento in F Major, K. 138" performed by the Quatuor Van Kuijk, I noticed that these IEMs are not super analytical or bright. In fact, for those seeking to gather every tiny detail in their music, they may find themselves wanting a bit more from the S12 PRO.

Soundstage & Imaging
In the previously described Coldplay song "Yellow," I could perceive a sense of distance between the audience and the band. However, to my ears, the soundstage is wider than it is tall and deep. There is good distinction of distance between the sides, but not as much towards the front and back.
But here's where it gets exciting: the imaging capability is spectacular. In Avicii's "Waiting for Love," the single-sided planar magnetic driver manages to separate the different layers of the song's introduction. If I were to describe them from "top to bottom" what I hear is: first, Avicii's vocals above everything else, in the middle the rhythmic sound of the piano keys, and then below or in the background, the drums with their kicks and cymbals accompanying the song. Both instruments and vocals disappear during the build-up to the drop and are replaced by synthetic sounds. When the drop hits, these instruments reappear in the same "layers". The drums only play their cymbals while the song’s bass is carried by a synthesizer that is introduced at this moment.
This description showcases the capabilities of this type of driver, providing a precise image that allows the listener to clearly differentiate which instruments are being reproduced and effortlessly separate them from one another.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, I cannot speak about the improvements LETSHUOER made to this IEM compared to the first S12 as I did not have the opportunity to try that model. However, based on my experience and comparing the presentations of the S12 and S12 PRO, it is evident that it was not a simple change of tuning. Adding a modular cable of even better quality than its predecessor (128 strands vs. 392 strands) and maintaining the same solid construction makes those extra $15 USD worth it. In terms of sound and some cable aspects, I had my few criticisms but there are more positive characteristics that I can highlight about these IEMs, and I must say they are a great way to enter the world of planar magnetic IEMs.

I'm currently relocating the electronics on my Ender 3 Pro. Giving and requesting advice.
A while back, I posted about relocating the electronics on my Ender 3 Pro so that the mainboard doesn't fry when I stick my printer into a heated chamber. I got some very helpful advice, and it is much appreciated. After gathering all the necessary materials, I've finally moved on to actually performing the relocation, and this is where I am so far. I thought I'd make a post so as to share what I've learned and so as to ask for advice.
AIO electronics enclosure
At the moment, all of the electronic components are now in the AIO enclosure. I still need to get more M3 screws for the panels, get some screws to mount the 120mm fan, and extend the wires so that they can reach the electronics from outside of my chamber.
My current method of extending the wires consists of removing the male JST-XH wire-to-board connectors from the printer wires, replacing them with male JST-SM wire-to-wire connectors via crimping, cutting a piece of wire of similar gauges, crimping a female JST-SM connector to one end of the wire, and then crimping a male JST-XH connector to the wire. The result is a modular extension cable that can be replaced with a longer or shorter one if necessary in the future.

Male JST-XH wire-to-board connector

Male JST-SM wire-to-wire connector (left) and female JST-SM connector (right)
While crimping the connectors to the wires, it occurred to me that I'd need to also extend the wires for the nozzle heater and the bed heater. The wires for these two components are noticeably thicker than the wires for the other components. The bed heater wires are listed as being 2x1.5 sqmm, which is approximately 14 AWG, and the nozzle heater is approximately 16 AWG or 18 AWG. I could be wrong on these because I pretty much eyeballed the thicknesses. This led me to consider the current draw for these components. From what I can tell, the stock Ender 3 Pro bed heater is rated at 220 Watts and 24 Volts. Using P=I*V, I determined that the bed heater could draw up to 9.17 Amps. This far exceeds the JST-SM connector's rating of 3 Amps. It doesn't help that the SM connectors I bought from Amazon are Chinese knockoffs, so they may not even be able to handle 3 Amps. Admittedly, the 3 Amp rating is for 22 AWG, but I'm pretty sure the SM connector won't be able to handle 9 Amps even with a 14 AWG wire. Based on this, I needed to find a more suitable connector.

Factory bed heater for the Ender 3 Pro with power and voltage on the top right corner
Based on the 40 Watt 24 Volt rating of the nozzle heater cartridge, I assume that the heater cartridge pulls 1.67 Amps, which should be well within the range of even a Chinese knockoff of a JST-SM connector. So, I decided to leave the SM connector on the heater cartridge.
I went on JST's and Molex's websites to search for an adequate connector. JST has some ok offerings, but these connectors are far too clunky in my opinion. I did some searching, and apparently Molex's Mini-Fit Jr. are pretty popular on Amazon. But reading their Technical Data Sheet revealed a maximum current rating of 9 Amps for 16 AWG. That's cutting it too close, and I wanted some headroom for future upgrades. I decided that 10 Amps would be the absolute minimum, and 15 Amps and above would be preferable. Molex's offerings are pretty good, especially since the form factor of their connectors look less cumbersome to me. I was stuck choosing between their Molex Sabre and Molex Micro-Fit Plus connectors. I ultimately chose the Molex Sabre connectors due to their higher current rating of 18 Amps compared to the Micro-Fit Plus' 13 Amps. They're sized and priced similarly enough, so I figured I might as well go for the higher amperage connector.
Sourcing the connector housings and connector terminals was interesting. Buying directly from Molex requires purchasing in bulk, which is priced in the hundreds or thousands. Thankfully, Digikey and Mouser offer loose pieces and cut reels of terminals, significantly reducing the overall price.
I also went looking for a crimping tool, but official crimpers for the Molex Sabre are absurdly expensive. I ended up just getting a cheap universal IWISS crimper that in theory should work for any small connector.
So yeah, that's where I'm at right now. I'm just waiting for parts to come in so that I can finish up my wiring. Hopefully this is helpful to anyone else delving into 3d printer modification.
I do also have some questions. First of all, is my reasoning above logical? Am I right to be concerned of the current rating of connectors?
Also, to those who have experience with electronics, what procedure should I go through to check the quality of my modifications? What step-by-step process can I go through before turning on my modified printer so that my electronics don't release the magic smoke?
I noticed on the terminal blocks on the 4.2.2 Creality board that the end of the wires tended to be tinned with solder so as to make them solid. Since I'll now be placing wire extensions into the terminal blocks, do the ends of the wire extensions also need to be tinned? Will leaving them as normal wires affect anything or make my printer less safe?
Will the wire extensions and additional connectors increase resistance by any substantial amount so as to noticeably reduce the effectiveness of my motors, heaters, and thermistors?
I'm pretty stupid when it comes to electronics. I don't want to wake up one morning to find my printer and house on fire from faulty wiring.
Thanks in advance.

2023.06.04 09:10 Vision-Quest-9054 Alternate Source Of Electricity

Hi everyone,
I'm new here, so forgive me for any mistakes or typos. This post might be a bit long, but if you can, please review it and give me your thoughts.
Given my deep concern over an impending natural disaster or SHTF event, I have been researching hard on where to find an alternative power source for my home. My house is 4,000 square feet or 371.6122 Square meters and has a main circuit control panel of 400 amps and a Generac propane generator reserved for emergencies that produce 15-20 kW per hour. My home contains multiple appliances, including a water heater, heat pump, 2 refrigerators, a large freezer, a chest freezer, a washer and dryer, and a well pump. My home is located pretty far up a mountain and close to the boonies.
Because of our isolated geography on mountainous terrain beneath tree canopies and dense covering, solar energy (as well as wind energy) is out of the question, and so is mini-hydroelectricity since there are no running streams nearby. Given these limitations, we are left searching for a biofuel generator. Weeks of research have left me with two options so far: an older diesel engine that can run on homemade biofuel or a wood gasifier that can (supposedly) transfer fuel into any generator engine where it will run efficiently.
When asking other experts at electric companies, including Generac distributors, about using wood gas as an alternative fuel to power my system, they tell me that the BTUs produced would be insufficient for my entire house and that going off-grid is unrealistic. They further discouraged me by saying that if a national emergency or social collapse happened, I should either go to the Red Cross for help or get used to living in the post-apocalyptic dark ages. This answer doesn't seem right to me.
Would anyone here know of a good generator system that could be used with biofuel to produce electricity? This system would need to tie in 60 Hz for my home rather than 50 Hz(standard nominal voltage for the American home) and would also need to maintain 110-120 nominal volts. Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that there are no geothermal heat pockets in my region either.

While XRP Pumps Up 10% in 7 Days, Whales Are Accumulating This Lesser-Known Penny Crypto - Here's Why
Crypto traders are watching a relatively unknown penny crypto called Dogecoin ($DOGE) closely, as whales seem to be accumulating this altcoin amidst surging interest and social media buzz. Unlike XRP, which has seen significant gains over the past week, Dogecoin is still trading at penny-level prices. However, the crypto has seen a significant increase in volume and price action, leading some experts to speculate that this may be the next big thing in cryptocurrency. Dogecoin was first introduced in 2013 as a joke, featuring a meme of a Shiba Inu dog, but has since garnered a sizable following and has even been mentioned by Elon Musk. Despite its somewhat humorous origins, it remains to be seen whether Dogecoin can truly rival more established cryptocurrencies.

Shiba Inu Innovative Shib Burning Tools to be Unleashed in June 2023
Shiba Inu, the popular dog-themed cryptocurrency, is set to introduce new innovative Shib burning tools by June 2023. This move is aimed at tightening the security and protection of Shib from malicious actors who might want to undermine the integrity of the network. The tools, named "Flaming Shib" and "Blazing Shib," will enable holders to burn Shib tokens easily and securely. These tokens will then be sent to a black hole address, effectively eliminating them from circulation, making each remaining Shib token more valuable. Shib has been one of the fastest-growing cryptocurrencies in 2021, with its value increasing by over 10,000% in less than six months. The new innovative burning tools are expected to push the value even further, reinforcing its position in the crypto market.

[On-chain data shows bitcoin price spike may have been driven by Coinbase whale]("https://kortanews.com/posts/aHR0cHM6Ly9jb2luZ2FwZS5jb20vb24tY2hhaW4tZGF0YS1zaG93cy1iaXRjb2luLXByaWNlLW1vdmUtcGFzdC0yOGstcmVzaXN0YW5jZS8=")
According to recent on-chain data, the latest spike in Bitcoin's price may have been influenced by a whale operating on Coinbase. The whale has been identified to have made transactions worth more than $200 million on the platform over the past few weeks, coinciding with the recent price surge of the cryptocurrency.
This news has sparked speculations about the possibility of market manipulation, with critics worried that such actions by a few powerful players undermine the trust in the decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies.
However, some experts argue that such market movements are not uncommon, and that the nature of cryptocurrencies allows for individuals with large holdings to have a significant impact on their prices.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how these recent developments will affect the future of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin Price Analysis: BTC Price Soars Higher by 1.7% to Make a New ATH Above $59000
Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, has reached another all-time high. In recent trading, bitcoin's price surged 1.7% to exceed $59,000 and set a new high. Some attribute this increase to the rising demand for cryptocurrencies and institutional adoption. Bitcoin's growing mainstream acceptance as an asset class has been a primary driver of its price. The market remains optimistic that its value will continue to grow. Bitcoin is seen as a hedge against inflation, and with the U.S. economy continuing to expand monetary supply, Bitcoin's fundamental drivers may persist into the future.

2023.06.04 08:27 Apprehensive_Ant2172 Distribution box or second 4awg?

I currently have a 4 channel jl amp for my door speakers that is rated at 400w (I use 75x4) and I am putting an alpine s-a60m 600 watt amp (using 450ish) . Should I run all of this off of my 4awg I have in there already and just use a distributor box or should I run a new 4awg wire for the alpine and just have 2 power cables? Price is almost identical, wiring kit is 59 and distributor plus rca’s are 50ish
so not much difference there. Just a bit of work that I don’t mind, just want to get the most out of my setup.

2023.06.04 08:26 Norminal-ish How to select a DC motor/generator for pedal power?

I'm wanting to build a pedal powered generator for a kayak project. Rather than having a typical, mechanically driven propeller, I am attempting to put together a system that will involve a bicycle style pedal generator that powers a trolling motor. This would allow some options and versatility that most mechanical pedal drives, and electric motor systems, lack. The most important to me being the ability to switch between pedal drive to battery power for trolling. This will include a speed control circuit when switched to battery power. Eventually I would also like to add other features, such as charging of the battery from the motor while anchored in a river, solar panels mounted as a sun shade awning, direct solar power to the motor mode, and charging of the battery from the pedal generator while being stationary and not turning the prop. But that is all for later.
I can handle the wiring and have some ideas with off the shelf charge controllers for everything else, but what I don't know is what to buy for the generator to make the pedal power. I have a small 120v DC generatomotor that is sold for building a diy wind mill generator, but I don't know if that is the most efficient way to produce power. I can use charge controllers or boost/buck converters if needed to get voltage right for the motor, but I have no idea what makes for an efficient generator. I don't know the theory or the practical application for selection. I know most DC motors can be used as generators, but that's about it. Also, gearing with chain drive is my current plan, but still has rpm limits because of gear physical size. I would say 1000 rpm would be the upper limit, and closer to 500 is the goal.
Voltage will be 12v DC, and amps needed will be between 4 and 10 typically. Aiming for 100 watt pedal drive to start. I know they exist but are over $500 and I believe I can do this much cheaper with scraps from work and some welding. Famous last words but I'm going to give it a try.
What should I be looking for when deciding what to purchase for maximum pedal effort to power produced efficiency? What makes a good DC generator?

2023.06.04 08:26 Vision-Quest-9054 Alternate Source Of Electricity

2023.06.04 07:46 lnedible A Strategical Blunder

The soldiers lined on Ardenholms beaches. Their bright, jewel encrusted armor flashed brightly in the glaring summers sun. The warriors were eager to get on with their game of conquering and subjugating. They were Ardenholmites, Humilauians, and Pommedorans, as well as Tuberite religious warriors hailing from Solanum. They were gathered in Ardenholm to prepare for an imminent invasion from Veritas and their leader, BB.
Ardenholm, Humilau and especially Pommedora were in open rebellion from BB. They thought of him as a tyrannical leader, levying heavy taxes and other unreasonable demands. They finally decided to declare themselves separate from BB, but the turmoil quickly devolved into a fight for control of the entire island chain.
Pommedora was a Tuberist nation, so they called upon their Solanarian brothers to help the fight. The Tuberists, thinking it would be an easy battle, happily joined in.
As the Tuberites made the short voyage to Pommedora, tensions arose. There was an attempt to reestablish diplomatic relations which quickly broke down, resulting in a raid from Veritas on Pommedora, their closest neighbor.
The Tuberites arrived far too late to join the fray, but fortunately the raid was mostly scared off before any real fighting could occur, and the casualties were 6 in Pommedora, after a single arrow barrage and 8 Veritasian raiders who brought their boat too close to the walls and were sunk by a well placed explosive firework.
Thus began an alarmingly fast arms race. Both sides were on islands, so a full force invasion was not viable
yet. Seemingly overnight the once windswept and backwater islands in rebellion turned to industry. The once salty and warm air choked with the smoke from the flames of fires roaring in their mighty hearths. Peaceful and sunny harbors because overrun with heavy bots of war.
Veritas kept pace with the industrial might and the islands were equal in strength. Both bought mercenaries to fight, but Veritas gained a significant upper hand by taking a hefty loan from bankers overseas and buying much better metals than could ever be reaped from the earth on the barren island chain.
Finally the mines were depleted of what little resources they could muster. Though bright earthen metals were occasionally still warm from being melted and pounded into their molds.
With no more brawn games to play, both sides made a quick shift to mind games. Spies. Spies everywhere. In the streets. In the factories. In the harbors. Everywhere. Private conversations became public knowledge overnight. The town square of Ardenholm ran red with the blood of those suspected of treason.
Next came the starvation. The already small fields had been neglected because the farmers had been made to become factory workers. This time, the rebellion got the upper hand, with the Tuberists providing food from their vast fields back in Solanaria. Veritas attempted a naval blockade to stop the shipment of food from arriving. The Tuberists didn’t slow down. The naval commander ordered them to hold. The Tuberists, already very near to the maximum pace, almost appeared to speed up. Finally they stopped just outside of cannon range. They waited in a locked stalemate for 3 days until the Veritasians ran out of water and were forced to return to port. Thus, they spent the winter on meager rations and had to sell some of their newly bought steel to pay for food.
Finally, after a long and cold winter of light eating and intense stare-offs, the spring blossomed in the remaining fields.
The Veritasians had survived the winter by the skin of their teeth and knew that they could not survive another winter. This years winter had been astoundingly warm (by West Phagosian standards). In fact, this was the warmest winter ever recorded.
Over on Pommedora, which at this point had been established as the capital, the situation was almost as grim. The Tuberists, who were creeping up on a years time spent on an island were becoming increasingly obstinate and downright treasonous. They longed to go back to their homeland, and run on green fields, with gently rolling hills bordered by lush, fertile marshes, encased by the great mountains far to the west, just where the eye could see them. They downright despised the cramped island.
Tensions were starting to boil over on all sides of the war, until finally the spy game did its job. The Pommedorans received definitive proof that the Veritasians would be sailing for a “surprise” attack on Ardenholm in one months time. This was the break they needed and with this knowledge they could easily win the war.
Under the cover of darkness they began to very slowly and methodically ship soldier to Ardenholm. They arrived on mail boats and pleasure crafts, in wine barrels and tiny crude rafts. Simultaneously, these same craft evacuated the women and children, bringing them safely to Pommedora.
Then, the day before the battle, an idea was had. It was decided that instead of defending the city they should go on the offensive while the opposing military was away. The idea was they would go quickly to Veritas and slay BB, and then swiftly bring his head back over to Ardenholm where his army, seeing that they had nothing to fight for, would surrender.
There were problems with this plan, though. The entire army was already on Ardenholm, and Pommedora was still the closest island to Veritas, so it would make no sense to keep an army anywhere but there. Also, the ships would probably sail right by each other on their way to conquer their respective islands.
“None the matter with these details” said the commanders, “This plan is too good to pass up.”
And thus we pick up where we started, with the solders, armed to the teeth, sitting in the early morning sun, waiting for their boats to take them to Veritas.
They boarded and set off. 1/10 of the army was left behind to There was nothing but excitement as they lost sight of the shore. The soldiers were tremendously confident in their plan.
The boats sailed for 38 minutes without interruption.
Suddenly, a lookout sounded their horn. The soldiers instantaneously switched from their excited and eager chatter to silence as they looked on the horizon, expecting to see a fleet of opposing ships.
Instead they saw a tiny island. Barely even an island. More like a sad sandbar. The entire island was completely covered in Veritasian troops. They were all standing on the island, their bodies facing the fleet. They were all watching the fleet sail by.
All wielded a dull blue trident, the color of cold and drear ocean
Then one, the commander most likely, stepped forth and walked slowly to the edge of the shore, about 10 feet. He stopped at the edge and dipped the pronged fork of his trident into the water
Not a single eye strayed from his trident as it leapt to life. It’s dull and sad color replaced by an electric blue. The blue started from where the water touched the prongs and snaked down the trident at a decently fast pace.
Then he did the most unexpected thing of all, and fell face first into the water. All eyes remained on where he fell. The seconds ticked by. 15. 30. 60. 90. Was he dead? 120. Then at 133 exactly he sprang from the water. His right hand clamped so tightly around his trident his knuckles were bleached like dead coral. He sailed 50 meters in the air, well above the masts of the boats, and about 150 meters towards the boats.
Then his army all seemingly sprang to life and walked swiftly to the waters edge. It was a trap! They didn’t pause for dramatic effect like he did, diving headfirst into the water and sailing through the air with almost no delay.
The archers attempted to ready their bows but the boats were already packed tight with men, horses, cannons, and all sorts of equipment of war.
The tridenteers sprang forth and plunged into the ocean like rain. A hundred a twenty, they numbered. They rapidly began closing the distance. The archers pulled back their bows and waited for them to get into firing range. They quickly closed in. Finally, they were in shooting distance and they fired. None of the shots struck. In fact, none even came close. The soldiers were simply too small to hit accurately, especially from a rocking boat.
The tridenteers then passed overhead, and did the most unexpected thing of all. A few reached into their pouches and pulled out a single gray stick about the size of a baton. They then dropped them.
All of the tridenteers possessed 8 of these sticks, so most waited until they had clear shots to drop. A few thought they did right then, and threw their sticks towards the ships.
All except one missed. It was tremendously hard to fire accurately while trying to dodge projectiles.
The one that didn’t miss sailed down, down, down until it landed barely on the port side of a medium sized Humilauian cruiser. The wood of the boat was no match for the explosion that rang out. The front port side was torn. The water spout produced from the explosion went 15 meters into the air.
The ship sank in 2 minutes.
Immediately it’s neighboring boats turned sharply to rescue the screaming survivors. The tridenteers passed about a kilometer away from the boats before veering to the left and turning to made another pass.
The ships were thoroughly spooked, and most moved to do evasive maneuvers.
Suddenly, three powerful horn blasts rang out. This was the sign to press forth. The ships readjusted course to fan out, but 9 blasts rang out, the sign to stick together.
A second pass was made with 2 ships sunk. Another pass was made, but no ships were sunk. Than another with no ships. Another with 1. Another with 1. Another with none. This continued until 87 passes were made. There were 137 boats in total at the beginning, 7 large, 38 medium and 94 small. 93 remained. There were 4 large boats remaining (the 3 that were sunk had been sunk at the very beginning), 15 medium boats, and 75 small boats. Almost all of the surviving medium and large boats had tied themselves together with rope and formed a sort of floating pontoon. This greatly increased the sailing time, and a journey of 3 hours took 6.
Not all of the ships that were lost had sunk. Of the 19 small boats that were not present in the final fleet, only 2 had actually been sunk.
There had been a sort of mutiny aboard some of the smaller boats after the 8th pass. 2 of the 7 large boats had been hit and were sinking and the situation was looking very dire. In the rear, 9 of the small boats and 8 of the medium boats (the medium boats were the very end of the fleet) all mutinied against their captains, with three being stabbed to death and one being cast into the sea and turned around back to Ardenholm. Watching them sail away nearly caused the entire fleet to break apart but they were guided by a common foe.
A few of the boats lagged behind. 4 medium boats couldn’t keep pace due to being non-fatally struck and turned around. The tridenteers were given orders to at least damage the ships heavily enough to force them to turn around, so they allowed those ships to flee.
3 small ships, in an interesting turn of fate, were nearest to the islands when the bombing started. They were the ones who had sounded the alarm. The tridenteers had passed over them entirely without dropping a single bomb. They were still horrified watching the preliminary carnage before the ships could form up, and decided to run themselves aground on the tiny island the Veritasians had started out in.
They hid under the 6 palm trees for 8 days, not knowing anything about the status of any of the nations. They survived by eating the horses they had brought and drinking the wine they had brought which they were going to celebrate with once the island of Veritas was conquered.
Finally, after 6 hours, the boats sighted Veritas. The midday sun was high in the air and the archers could not see the trident wielders through the sun, accelerating their losses.
Veritas looked abandoned. The alarm has been raised but very few troops were on the walls, looking very frightened.
The soldiers let out a halfhearted cheer upon laying eyes on the island. The Veritasian tridents veered right after the fleet made their way into the smooth natural harbor.
The tridenteers had only lost 11. 7 from lucky bow shots, 3 from the binding from their wrists to their tridents slipping off, and 1 stupid soldier who tried to land on a small boat and was instantly slain.
The boats neared the docks of Veritas. The harbor wasn’t much of a harbor at all, only having a narrow wave-breaking sandspit that only extended past a third of the docks.
The boats made passes towards the docks, with some soldiers being so desperate to get off of them they leaped from the boats and swam to shore.
The boats all started to unload as normal, with horses being placed on the shore and equipment to breach the great gate of Veritas being unloaded
Suddenly the great gate of Veritas, which was expected to be a large obstacle swung open and half of Veritas’s army (still a formidable number mind you) roared forth, banging their shields, and sprinted at the unprepared rebels.
This was not expected at all, and no precautions for this had been taken. The rebels on the beach all turned to run back to the boats when, alas! The tridenteers reappeared from out of nowhere behind the boats. They hurtled towards the crafts, flying much more recklessly now, and dropped their bombs. The boats were not moving or fighting back this time and 8 were struck.
In the same run, 47 of the tridenteers dropped their explosives on top of the docks, blowing all except two up. Those two would be decommissioned in the next run.
This mostly stranded the peoples on the shore, whose only option now was the rowboats from the large ships. Some ran towards those but right then the charging army from the gates slammed into those on the shore.
18 rowboats were cast off, from the beach and the rest were not able to and were scuttled. The battle for the beach was a terrible situation for the rebels with them being completely pinned against the sea.
The battle lasted 15 minutes. There was no command from any officers due to most still being present on the boats. No definitive line was formed up and many men swam out to sea to try to wait out the slaughter. Most men threw their weapons on the ground and begged for mercy.
1/6 of the seaborn army was slain and 1/6 of the army surrendered on the beach, totaling 1/3 of invasion, or exactly 642 men.
The boats tried to leave the harbor but all tried to leave at once and a few collisions occurred. The boats that made it out were harassed by the tridenteers the entire time. A few tridenteers were observed landing on the decks of boats and stabbing sailors as they tried to get the boats under control before running away
To top it off, the winds were blowing in an awful direction and most of the boats were blown far to the right. They nearly crashed into an unwalled peninsula. The horn of orders was silent because the ship they were on had taken a direct hit and was rapidly sinking. The commander of the entire operation, on that ship, had died instantly in the blast. The entire senior commanding force had migrated to that boat during the trident harassment because it was centrally located and the safest option. None of the senior officers survived, as the bomb quite literally split the ship in two, and as they were gathered midship below the upper decks they had either been torn up from wood splinters or went down with the ship and were drowned.
Due to the lack of orders, all ships had their own idea of what to do. Most of them thought that the wind was far too unfavorable to set into open water so decided to land on the peninsula. About 1/3 decided to try the winds and sailed in various directions to various islands. This time, the tridenteers could harass them all they wanted and most would not get far. One tridenteer was assigned per boat, which ended up being a large blunder on Veritas's part because most were out of ammunition and could not do any damage.
Those who landed on the peninsula were met with an immediate problem. Unloading. Most of the men jumped overboard to swim to shore and some ships went completely unmanned before being either sunk or captured by the opposing force. Some men who didn't take of their armor were weighed down by it and drowned. The same happened for the archers, who's quivers filled completely with water instead of arrows, and if they were unable to get the quiver off they drowned.
There was one final factor that was at play. The peninsula itself. It was very long and narrow. So narrow that a tridenteer could safely jump all the way over it without being dashed apart on the rocks.
A single tridenteer sprang fourth. Their bright blue trident electric against the sky, which was growing progressively cloudier. They reached into their pocket and pulled out one of the sticks. They lazily let it go before safely landing in the water on the other side.
They didn’t even have to aim. It exploded on the top right corner of the peninsula and some were caught in the blast.
The other tridenteers followed suit. There were only 26 archers still armed as almost all of them had either abandoned their gear or were weighed down by it trying to swim over.
The entire peninsula was scourged. The walls extended to the beach on either side, and the coast became far too treacherous and rocky to swim around.
40% of the entire army was slain on the peninsula. A further 20% (of the men on the peninsula) surrendered and only 19 men escaped. 9 on a rowboat that was let go because of its irrelevance and 10 somehow survived the swim around the walls and ran up the island before stealing a sailboat and escaping.
Those that turned around and fled immediately suffered casualties, but not to the scale of this. About 5% of the army died on the sail back from getting picked off. Most of the tridenteers ran out of ammunition.
A grand total of 67% of the army perished in this advancement. A further 14% surrendered and of those, 1% died in prison from disease or starvation. 1,531 men in total lost their lives.
As for the boats, of the ones that made it to Veritas, none of the large ships survived, 4 of the medium ships made it back (2 were captured, 9 sank) and 29 of the small ships made it back (38 sunk, 8 captured). Of the 18 rowboats that were on the beach during the initial beach attack, 15 landed on the peninsula, with the other three rowing all the way to Pommedora.
Those that escaped ended up on all manner of islands in the surrounding area. One boat drifted with only one man on board for 8 days. He too survived off of horseflesh but also was lucky enough to get rainwater.
The other half of Veritas’s army had taken a longer route to Ardenholm. Ardenholm somehow managed to pull off an astonishing victory, despite being outnumbered 5-1. They were helped by the crew that had mutinied initially. They made use of their thick walls and used a turtle strategy to wait for help, until after 24 hours when they realized that something had gone seriously wrong they then went on a sudden offensive catching the Veritasian army completely by surprise because they had grown used to not being shot at.
The Ardenholm fighters used bows and a ridiculously large pile of arrows to shoot at the invaders non-stop until they finally gave up and went home. They were significantly hampered by not having the other half of their army. Both sides suffered relatively minor casualties, with Ardenholm losing 19 men and Veritas losing exactly 100.
Veritas lost 58 of their 120 tridenters, with the vast majority being lost by flying too close to the boats and being shot with arrows. Interestingly, 82% of those that landed on boats to stab individual sailors would perish. Their army suffered a loss total of 329.
This defeat left the rebels in shock. Their entire standing army had been effectively wiped out. They would start having to recruit younger men and paying more for mercenaries.
The Tuberists had taken the highest casualty rate, with an unimaginable 80% casualty rate and 16% captured. Only 4%, or just 16 men on one small boat, which they never left, managed to make it back. When the elder potatoes learned about this, they were understandably shocked and devastated and justifiably withdrew all future support to the rebellion. They claimed that the Tuberites had been used as cannon fodder and that that was an stupidly high casualty rate for a defensive mission. They had lost every single one of their ranking officers they had sent on that mission and demanded insanely high rates of compensation. It wasn’t until the battle was thoroughly explained and they were promised that all the islands would convert to Tuberism that they agreed to help once more.
The defeat didn't spell doom for the rebels, but would certainly go on to hamper their future efforts.
And that is the story of one of the worst strategical blunders in Stoneworks history.
This story is based around the truth. Ardenholm was indeed attacked by Veritas and BB after rebelling with Pommedora and Humilau. The Tuberists did indeed help out for religious reasons. There was indeed a failed charge counterattack which was poorly planned and the casualty numbers are accurate if you combine the dead and captured and just consider them all dead. The Veritasians did indeed use tridents to pick most of us off, and I myself died. This would have easily cost us the battle as we lost 80% of our total gear and didn’t really have enough time to make a proper repot. We used the good old 0-armor-stone-axe-rush strategy and only won because they placed capture points underwater which is illegal. So yeah the next battle is in a week (I think) and we have a LOT of grinding to do haha.
Also Stoney hmu if you ever want any scriptwriting help. I love to do this.
If you read this far um gg I guess

2023.06.04 07:02 MelancholicJellyfish First upgrade from 5700xt Ryzen 5 3600 and b450

I helped my friend with a purely gaming PC previously, and now he is asking for help with upgrading it.
He wants to overhaul the whole PC but little by little over the next year.
One of the main things wanted are a MB with a PCIe 4 M.2 slot, and a second M.2 slot that can be slower (main slot will utilize A Crucial P5 Plus, second slot his old WD SN5550)
He wanted to possibly swap to Intel instead of AMD.
He also stated he would like ray tracing.
Targetting 1440p gaming, sometimes CPU intensive games
Here is his current PC, mouse/KB and monitor are all different from list (list is from when I built it). Where would you start the upgrades at and is it advisable to swap from AMD to Intel?

2023.06.04 06:37 imawestie Drucker - a walkthrough of Update 33 - Yeah, spoilers.

I don't regard myself as an expert at this game but I play almost exclusively on Lethal now.
I rarely pull any crew from my Legacy Pool, but I do "lean" on the Legacy Pool to overcome problems (call it spamming or savescumming or cheesing I don't mind) with getting from "launch" to having the Infirmary built - as you will see it is not in my gameplan to do that "super early" and I have typically eliminated 5+ hearts before establishing the Infirmary.
I don't use things like the firework gun thing and generally I avoid calling in the Impaler.
Below is Drucker County. This is at "pre boon mission" - and I will probably restart the map rather than do the Boon mission, as I have already done them all and they are boring.
For reference at the end of the game, I have survived 12 days: less than 2 weeks. That means killing 2 or 3 hearts a day. I'm pretty sure this time around I had no community deaths, although I did exile a couple of people and I think one might have been plague effected after getting a heart to a phase.
Here is my community having just killed the last heart. Nobody has maxxed all 5 stats yet, and only 2 have maxxed anything at all - Vasquez was recruited with Automechanic already maxxed... I have finished the game occupying Wallys Bar and Grill (the cafe type place in Santa Maya, the centre of the map). None of my characters are Sheriffs - so I have not been able to "finish" the Lounge.

For this walkthrough I used Builder and Sheriff boons. I find Trader and Warlord dump a bunch of stuff on you at the start which simply amps the starting difficulty without particularly providing a long-term benefit.

The image below shows what I do before I claim the Vogel House. Note I do make a fair bit of use of...
  1. A known location for a jerry can
  2. Using my whole team as pack mules
  3. Finding cars to load Rucksacks into, BEFORE claiming the base.
The new update has decreased item 3 quite a bit: I have learned through trial and error that waking a heart before claiming the starter house is a Bad Idea (tm).
Pre claiming Vogel
The diagram below shows the circuit I do before I claim Vogel House. But first, Ferals: I have found that with Update 33 I am running into more ferals than previously. My answer to this is in three parts:
  1. Honestly if it happens as soon as you start, go straight in. They seem easier to kill with 3 newbies who are not tired even if all they have is pipes.
  2. At the gun shop give your two partners whatever gun you can find, ideally a shotgun stuns a feral and that can solve a lot of problems when there are 3 of you.
  3. At least one of the characters having a Blunt heavy weapon.
When there are 3 of you these 3 tactics seem to get the job done.
Also, prior to update 33 - the hearts were the hearts. I am now finding I need to be a lot more timid to avoid things like screamers or killing plague zombies waking hearts up during this part of the game.

A: the starting makeshift camp where you can access your Command Centre, and drop off items which fit in a backpack.
1: where the car is at the start of the game. 2: by this point you should have found a petrol can. 3: a campsite where you can usually find something useful. 4: generally you will find one or two ranged weapons and maybe a workshop mod in the gun store in town. After clearing these out you will go to the makeshift camp. From the makeshift camp you return to your car. Note: the earlier you find a car then your journey might not change much but your approach to rucksacks WILL change. You want to have "all cars full" plus two of your 3 beginner characters carrying a ruck. In your car travel to 5. Here you can pick up fuel - both a jerry and a ruck - and materials. You should also be able to find one or two plague locations.
Don't hang around!
Travel to 6. Between 5 and 6 you should be looking for hearts while avoiding doing anything that will wake them up.
If you find a car, drop off the rucks you're carrying.
Go via 7 - if there is a chance, loot one or both the food locations here.
Back to the makeshift camp. Empty all backpacks. Reallocate rucks.
Head off to 8. I like to secure but not loot on the way north to 9.
9 is a checkpoint. More weapons and an ammo ruck. You might prefer to leave the ammo ruck behind because you will return to 8 where you will probably find more rucks than you can carry.
This is when I finally claim Vogul House.
Then the Materials World mission starts. Ideally by now I have found 1x heavy weapon - even a driveshaft club is good enough.
https://preview.redd.it/2o3qy490hx3b1.png?width=1060&format=png&auto=webp&s=16a8b988bd33fe43fe7a66815d1ba126592ad537
Generalyl there will be about 5 hearts in this south-west portion of the map. You need to be a bit cautious to work out which one/s you can do without waking any of the others. With each of your 3 characters - the goal is, pick up anything that isn't a material ruck from the previous step, while killing 2 hearts per character. Chances are if you are as bad as me you will get at least 50% plagued "by accident" - if this happens, head home. As soon as you can - call in an enclave. You need them for fuel, toolboxes, maybe stim items, maybe a weapon.
Don't hang around and loot if it seems dangerous: go back with the healthy character, and do it without taking risks, to manage fatigue.
By now you can think about...
the rest of the plague hearts on the west,
https://preview.redd.it/snxf3vgthx3b1.png?width=1138&format=png&auto=webp&s=6a2312787fb21f5855390cd06a09c32ce7d8dd57
you probably have 2x heros,
and you should be thinking about claiming the cell-phone tower near Vogul House to manage crowds / prevent accidental waking of plague hearts.
Those hearts on the South of the map are usually close enough to trigger a chain reaction of wakening. What you really don't want is to accidentally trigger the ones clustered in the centre of the map near the hospital up there.
From there I went and did the isolated heart in the medical centre in the middle of nowhere.
I actively used the (new to release 33) Disruptor feature of the cell-tower, as well as, relocating which cell tower I claimed all over the map, to use the (new to release 33) "land mine" feature.
I moved my other outposts periodically as well, for the same reason, and to simplify character change-over while taking out hearts.
All this was done without accessing anyone from the legacy pool, or any military recruits.
I did recruit from enclaves to disband the ones with the sucky benefits.
I did recruit from the mechanics enclave, and wound up with a champion auto-mechanic (plus someone to exile).
