Icarus Sun Fall Chapter 7- War and Love
2023.06.07 02:56 Kiyomi_Raven_Misoto Icarus Sun Fall Chapter 7- War and Love
February 8, 2146, Project Chameleon HQ, Brussels, PRE
It has been a few weeks since Project Autumn has returned back to her normal life. Her days were pretty routine. She would wake up and eat breakfast. Then head to briefs and classes. Then, she would eat lunch before heading off to drills and training that left her sore and extremely fatigued. Autumn would eat dinner, shower, talk to Juliette for a few hours before falling asleep to do it all over again. The days soon became three weeks since she saw Juliette in person. Autumn’s next mission to Rio was quickly approaching. Autumn was excited about it, but what she really wanted to do was spend time with the girl that she really liked. Her training was done, and she was packing her bags for her mission. Autumn was told that she would be a part of the next gauntlet that would take place after she gets back from Rio. She was very excited about it and couldn’t wait to tell Juliette. Autumn looked at the time and saw that it was still five hours before she would normally call Juliette. She was bored, lonely, and really wanted to talk to her. Autumn wrestled with this as she packed her bags.
Agents of Chaos HQ, New York City Containment Zone, PRE
Icari raced through one of the remaining buildings of what was once an overpopulated city. Most of what was once known as New York City was destroyed during the Great War. The city was deserted and hardly anyone lived there. It became the perfect location for the headquarters for the Agents of Chaos. Icari found this out through hacking the government’s mainframe. She decided to put an end to them once and for all. Icari also wanted to know what their connection was to the Prospers. She raced floor to floor eliminating their commanders and whoever she came across. Soon, she found the last remaining members as she stalked
them in the lower parts of the building with her curved blades ready to strike. Icari cornered them ready to end the threat of the Agents of Chaos. They knew that they were out of bullets and out of time. They huddled in fear from what they perceived to be their inevitable demise.
“Wait! Please, don’t kill us.” Agent 1 said with fear in their voice.
Icari was shocked and amused as she stopped and said, “Wait…what? Why shouldn’t I?”
“Be…because we are extremely sorry for all of the stuff that we have done.” Agent 1 replied.
Icari scoffed and started to move closer to them. She suddenly froze when she received a notice of an incoming call. Icari smiled when she saw that it was from Project Autumn.
Icari looked at the Agents and said, “Hey, can you all give me some time. I really need to answer this call.” Icari answered the call with a French accent. “Hello, Mademoiselle Autumn. Is everything alright?”
“Did. Did she just put us on hold?” Agent 1 asked.
“I know right and what’s up with the French accent?” Agent 2 replied.
Icari glared at the agents and put a finger to her lips to silence them. They quickly covered their mouths with their hands with fear in their eyes.
Autumn replied, “Hi, Juliette. It is so good to hear your voice. Yes, everything is fine. I am packing for my mission to Rio. I was bored and lonely. I started to think about you and how much I really miss you.”
Icari smiled as she sat down on a desk facing the agents and said. “Aww. That is sweet of you to say. I have been thinking about you too.”
Autumn said, “I hope that I am not bothering you or anything. Are you busy right now?”
Icari replied, “No, not at all. I was taking care of something easy, but it can wait.”
Autumn quickly replied, “Are you sure? We can talk later if you want.”
Icari smiled and said, “No, it’s okay. I am sure that we can talk now.”
Meanwhile, the remaining Agents of Chaos began to argue with one another about what they
should do. Icari could hear their bickering and became extremely annoyed with everything that they were saying. She stood up and glared at them.
Icari counted the remaining agents, sighed, and said, “Autumn, give me a moment, please. It should take me… about thirty seconds to finish this simple task.”
Autumn replied, “Umm…sure. Take your time. I will be here when you are done. Please don’t take too long.”
Icari smiled and said, “Thank you, Mademoiselle. I promise not to keep you waiting long.”
Icari lunged at the remaining agents as they backed away in horror. Fifteen seconds later, Icari had taken care of the last remaining Agent of Chaos. She picked up a cloth and cleaned her daggers. Icari put them away before she pulled out a black disc out of her pocket. She headed towards their command center.
Icari asked, “Autumn, are you still with me?”
Autumn quickly replied, “Yes, yes. I am still here.”
Icari smiled as she put the disc on the main computer’s case and pushed a button as lights began to light up clockwise. She smiled and said, “Thank you for waiting.”
Autumn smiled and replied, “You’re welcome. I would have waited longer.” Autumn teased as she continued. “But… I guess the issue wasn’t as difficult as you thought.”
Icari laughed and said as she left the command center, “Sorry, I suppose I overestimated how difficult the issue would be.”
Autumn laughed and said, “I guess that I wouldn’t know, but the reason that I called you earlier than normal is I have news that I couldn’t wait to tell you at our normal time.”
Icari picked up a bag as she headed down the stairs to the basement where the building’s support beams were located. Icari said, “News? I appreciate you calling me to give us more time to talk, but what is the news?”
Autumn replied as Icari put small boxes with tubes filled with a green and yellow substance on the support beams and flipped a switch, “Yes, I was told earlier today, that after I get back from the mission to Rio, I will take part in the next gauntlet to decide who I may get paired with. What do you think?”
Icari was shocked and froze when she heard the news. She became scared that it would become a lot more difficult for her to see Autumn. Many feelings and thoughts ran through her head.
Autumn became concerned and asked, “Juliette, are you still there?”
Icari shook her head and replied, “Sorry, to make you concerned, and I am happy for you. Are you excited about your mission to Rio?”
Icari threw the empty bag aside after she placed the last box. She started to head back up the steps to the command center.
Autumn was excited as she replied, “I am super excited to be going for a couple weeks. They said that I deserve it from all of the stuff that I have dealt with lately. It will be two weeks of nothing but swimming and relaxing in the summer air.” Autumn became nervous as she continued. “B-but I- I w-wish that you could be there. It would be my first Valentine’s Day spending it with someone that I really like.”
Icari saw that all of the lights were lit green as she retrieved the black disc. She smiled and said, “Well. Mademoiselle, I may be able to make your wish come true.”
Autumn was shocked as she said, “Really? Tell me you aren’t joking or teasing me. Are you being serious?”
Icari had walked down the stairs to a door that led to an alley. She smiled and replied, “I would not joke or tease you to turn around and break your heart. I cannot make any promises, but I will make sure that I will do my best to help your wish come true.”
Icari walked out the door and pushed a button on her wrist. Suddenly, a black and red motorcycle appeared in the shadows with a black and red helmet with cat ears on it.
Autumn was sad as she said, “I understand. I thought that it would be a great time spending the two weeks with you instead of alone by myself.”
Icari sat on the motorcycle and put on the helmet. The sun started to peek in the east sky. She started
up the motorcycle as she replied, “Do not be sad, Autumn. I promise you that you will have my answer by the time that you land in Rio. You might be surprised by what I can do in such a short period of time.”
Icari pushed a button on her motorcycle as she drove off and disappeared from site. She pushed another button that caused an explosion behind her, and the building collapsed into dust.
Autumn blushed and said, “I believe you and look forward to your answer. Listen, I have to finish packing, eat dinner, and shower. Can I call you later?”
Icari smiled as she replied, “I understand, and you can call me whenever you like. I look forward to talking to you soon, Mademoiselle Autumn.”
Autumn said, “I look forward to talking to you soon too, Juliette. Bye for now.”
Icari said, “Bye for now.” There was a small click. Icari sighed before she continued. “Watcher, are you there?”
Watcher scoffed. “Yes, I am here. Are you done flirting with your girlfriend?” Watcher said annoyed.
Icari snapped back, “I wasn’t flirting with her, and she isn’t my girlfriend. Listen. When I get back to the safe house, I will be uploading the files that I uploaded from the Agents of Chaos mainframe. I need you to decipher the files to see if they were working for the Prospers and any other useful information.”
“Anything else?” Watcher asked.
Icari replied, “Yes, I need you to immediately hack into the system and book a flight for me from Harrisburg to Rio De Janeiro. I need a limousine to take myself and Autumn to the harbor, where a boat will ferry us to a beach home on Paqueta Island. We will be there for two weeks. Put everything under the name Juliette Trudeau.”
“Why should I?” Watcher asked abrasively.
Icari replied, “Well, you have two choices. Either I am out of your hair for two weeks, or I make your life a living hell for the next two weeks. Then, I still book it on my own. You choose.”
“Fine. Fine. It’s not like I care if you spend time with your girlfriend or not. Everything will be taken care of by the time you make it to the safe house and upload the files.” Watcher replied.
Icari snapped back, “For the last time, she is not my girlfriend! And thank you.”
“Yeah, yeah. Don’t mention it. It is kind of nice to see you happy once more. Have fun and
remember that we have a war to win.” Watcher said kindly.
Icari smiled and said, “Yeah, I won’t forget.”
An hour and a half later, Icari pulled into the safe house in Harrisburg. She pushed a button on her motorcycle and the garage door opened. Icari pushed the button, and it closed. She pushed another button, and they became visible once more. Icari took off her helmet and placed it on her motorcycle. She walked to a wall in the garage and revealed a secret panel. Icari inputted the code, and a secret staircase was revealed. She walked down the stairs as the wall closed behind her. A room lit up as she opened the door. The computer turned on and system was running. Icari approached the computer as she took the black disc out of her pocket. She put the disc on a reader. The lights flashed on and worked in reverse. Icari received the itinerary, confirmation for the rentals, and digital tickets. As the disc was uploaded to their mainframe, Icari walks to a closet marked for Juliette. She opened up the closet and pulled out two bags already packed for her for two weeks in a summer environment. Icari closed the door. When she was done, she walked over to check the disc and saw that it was fully uploaded. Icari grabbed the bags and walked up the stairs. When she got near the top, the computer shut down, door sealed closed, and the secret door into the garage opened. After Icari had passed, the door closed and sealed shut. Icari walked into a normal home and left the bags near the front door. She cooked lunch at the same time Autumn would call her. They talked for a few hours before Autumn headed to bed. Soon, Autumn and Icari headed to their perspective airports to start their journey to Rio. Five hours and forty-five minutes later, Juliette’s plan landed at the International Airport in Rio
De Janeiro. She grabbed her carry-on bag and went to get her check in luggage. Juliette headed for the main doors and walked out into a sunny midmorning day. The air was refreshing, and it was already setting up to be a warm day. Juliette had made sure to change her appearance before she left for the airport. Juliette looked around and saw a limousine. The driver was standing outside it. He was holding a sign with Juliette Trudeau written on it in big letters. She smiled and walked over to him. The driver eyed her as she approached.
Juliette said,” Olá, eu sou Juliette Trudeau.”
The driver lowered the sign. “Olá, eu estive esperando por você, Sra. Trudeau.” The driver replied.
Juliette smiled and asked, “Can I see your sign while you put in my bags in the trunk, please?”
The driver bowed. “As you wish, Sra. Trudeau. Your guest should arrive soon from Brussels.” The driver replied as he handed over the sign and a marker.
Juliette smiled as she took the sign and marker from the driver while she said, “Obrigado.”
“De nada, Sra. Trudeau.” The driver said as he placed Juliette’s luggage in the back.
He walked to where Juliette was and took the sign and marker from her. The driver opened the door for Juliette to get in. When she was seated, he closed the door and stood outside of the limousine. Thirty minutes later, Juliette’s heart began to race as she saw Autumn walk out of the airport with her luggage in tow. Autumn had put on her glasses and looked around. She froze when she looked towards the limousine. Autumn slowly walked over to the driver.
Autumn cautiously said, “Hi, I am Project Autumn. Are you looking for me?”
The driver bowed. “Yes, I have been expecting you, Sra. Autumn. Let me put your luggage in the trunk.” The driver replied.
Autumn thought, “I never would think that Project Chameleon would have a limo waiting for me at the airport.”
Autumn replied, “Umm… sure. Thank you.”
The driver opened the door for Autumn to get in. He closed the door after she was comfortably seated in the back of the limousine. Autumn watched the driver take her stuff to the back. She was startled, and her heartbeat faster when she heard the sound of a familiar voice from inside the limousine.
Juliette smiled and said, “Hello, Mademoiselle, Autumn.”
Autumn instinctively lunged at Juliette as she turned to face her and kissed her lips. She immediately realized what she had done from the shocked look on Juliette’s face and blushed as she moved away. Juliette smiled and took Autumn’s hands into her own.
Autumn said, “Hi, and I’m sorry Juliette. I don’t know what came over me. I just got so excited that you were here.” Autumn took a deep breath before she continued. “Wh-what are you doing here?”
Juliette replied, “It’s okay. I am happy to see you too. I told you that you would have my answer by the time that you had landed here. I thought that the best way for me to give you my answer was to be here in person to give it to you.”
They heard the sound of the trunk closing and saw the driver walk down the side of the limousine to the driver’s door. He opened it, got in, closed the door, and started the engine. He pulled away from the cub and headed towards the pier.
Autumn said, “I am really glad that you brought your answer to me. When did you get here? How long will you be able to stay here?”
Juliette squeezed Autumn’s hands and smiled as she replied, “So am I. I got here around two hours before you did. If it is alright with you, I plan on being here the entire two weeks that you are.”
Autumn smiled as she said, “Yes, yes. That would be perfect for me. But…where are we headed?”
Juliette winked as she replied, “It is a secret, and you will have to find out when we get there.”
The driver drove them through town as they talked in the back of the limousine. When they arrived at the pier, The driver parked the limousine and got out. He went to the side and opened the
door. Autumn and Juliette got out and looked around. They spotted a yacht ready to go as the driver took their luggage out of the trunk. Some men came over and grabbed their luggage, and they followed them onto the yacht as the limousine pulled away. Thirty minutes later the yacht pulled away from the pier and headed towards a small island. Autumn looked around excitedly as Juliette smiled and watched her reactions. Soon, they had docked at the island. Another limousine was waiting at the pier as they got off the yacht. The same two men carried their luggage off of the yacht, and the driver put the luggage in the trunk of the limousine after Autumn and Juliette got in. They drove them a little ways until they reached an office building. Juliette got out and checked in. She came back out with their keys. The driver drove them to the beach front rental home. As Autumn got out, she was amazed. She turned to face Juliette as the driver took their luggage out of the trunk.
Juliette smiled brightly as she said, “Surprise.”
Autumn was still shocked as she asked, “Are we staying here the entire time?
Juliette nodded as she replied, “Oui, this is the rental home that I had reserved for us the two weeks. Are you surprised?”
Autumn looked at home and back at Juliette. She blushed as she replied, “Very much so. I can’t believe that you would go through all of this trouble just for me. Thank you.”
Juliette smiled and said, “It was no trouble at all to see you. You’re very welcome. Shall we go inside?”
Autumn blushed and replied, “Yes, I would like that.”
They grabbed their luggage and headed to the front door. Juliette pulled out the key cards and handed one to Autumn. She swiped the key card reader. It beeped, turned green, and an audible click could be heard signaling that it had been unlocked. They headed inside and were at awe from how beautiful everything looked. They looked around and saw two large rooms, a kitchen, patio, living room, both rooms had a bathroom, a breakfast nook, pool, jacuzzi, grill, study, and everything that someone would need. They walked back to the bedrooms.
Juliette asked, “Which room would you like to take?”
Autumn looked away and replied, “Well…I was…thinking that…that we could share…the same room, if…if you don’t mind.”
Juliette smiled and replied, “I don’t mind. I would enjoy that very much.”
Autumn smiled and said, “I would like that too.”
They picked the largest room and took their stuff in there. They put everything away and decided to change into their swimsuits. They headed to the beach and swam for a while. Autumn and Juliette grew closer through the days. They spent every day together. On Valentine’s Day, they went swimming when the sun rose. Autumn and Juliette came back and feed each other chocolates and ate chocolates. They laughed and were having fun until Juliette remembered that soon Autumn would leave for the labyrinth to run the gauntlet and became sad. Autumn noticed this and became concerned.
Autumn was concerned as she asked, “What is wrong, Juliette? Why are you so sad?”
Juliette frowned as she replied, “I just remembered that you will be going away soon for the gauntlet
where they will team you up with a new partner. Then, there will be no room for me in your…”
Juliette was shocked as she looked up at Autumn who had put her finger on her lips.
Autumn smiled warmly as she said, “No one will take your place in my heart, Juliette. I don’t care who they pair me with, but you will be the only one for me. So, do not worry about that. I will always be only yours.”
Juliette smiled and lunged forward knocking Autumn over and the chocolates onto the floor. She kissed Autumn deeply. The day past and was the best Valentine’s Day Autumn ever had. She woke up the next morning to realize that Juliette wasn’t in bed with her. Autumn could hear Juliette’s voice carrying in from the patio. She decided to see what is going on. She was sleepy as she got up, stretched and yawned as she put on a robe. She walked to the patio as she rubbed her eyes.
Juliette said, “.... Yes I... I promise that...See you...I.., you.”
Autumn smiled when she saw Juliette watching the sun rise. She was in a robe and held a cup of coffee. Autumn walked over to Juliette and hugged her from behind. She caught the smell of the coffee, the morning air, the beach, and Juliette’s hair. Juliette smiled and giggled from Autumn’s warm embrace. She leaned back into her. Then, Juliette turned around to face Autumn and handed her the mug that she was holding as she leaned against the railing. Autumn sipped coffee and smiled.
Juliette said, “Good morning. Did you sleep well?”
Autumn smiled and nodded as she replied, “Good morning. I slept very well. I woke up, and you weren’t in bed. I heard you talking to someone. Is everything okay? Who were you talking to?”
Juliette took the mug from Autumn as she replied, “I am sorry to have worried you. I am usually back in bed before you wake up. Yes, everything is fine. I was talking to Dr. Hubert like I do every morning to make sure everything is okay back at home. You know that you could always just run away with me. I know a place where they will never find us. We could start a new life together.”
Autumn smiled warmly as she said, “I am glad everything is going well back home for you. I would like that, but you know that I can’t leave. We would have to look over our shoulders for the rest of our lives on the run.”
Juliette frowned, looked at the mug, and replied, “I know, and I wouldn’t want to live on the run either.” Juliette paused before she continued. “I just have a bad feeling about this. Please, stay safe.”
Autumn put her hands on Juliette’s as she replied, “I will be safe. There is nothing to worry about. The gauntlet is completely safe, because only training rounds are allowed to tally up scores. I will call you immediately after it is over to prove that nothing happened to me.”
Juliette looked into Autumns eyes and said, “I hope that you are right.”
The rest of the time flew by and soon they headed back to the airport for their flights. Autumn left first, and Juliette left next. Juliette landed in Harrisburg International Airport. Autumn landed at Brussels. They had a quick conversation as Icari made it to the safe house. After they hung up, Icari got a phone call from Watcher.
“Hey, Icari. I hope that you had fun. I went over the files that you sent me, but I couldn’t decode them. So, I…” Watcher started to say.
There was a brief pause before a monotone girl’s voice spoke. “Hi, mommy. We need to talk.” The girl said.

2023.06.06 02:30 GreatestEfer Thoughts: anyone else getting annoyed by all the Japan hunters?
Is this a fad? How long will this otaku wave last, or do you think it's sticking around for the foreseeable future (decade+)?
I ask because I'm not even going to Japan but I am heading west, and man are these awards hard to find/re-schedule because of all the TYO hunters.
I somehow (miraculously) snagged a full J RT (2x 1-ways) to SE Asia next Feb-Mar a month ago--with minimal effort for Friday departure, weekend return, <=24hrs duration/way too. It's on JAL so I'll get to layover in HND and check out the JAL F lounge since I have OWE. (Ikr, how meta; snatching a JP award slot and not even going to JP.) 100k to + 70k miles back + $68 fees total.
Been looking to reschedule my westward/outbound flight... and it's painful. Checking multiple orig - same dest and same orig - multiple dest combos, nada that's cheaper than my 100k spent. Seemingly a lot of the award connections are in TYO & ICN, which makes sense, but those are so heavily contested by Japan-goers. For those in the same boat, have you been annoyed by this? 🤔
Edit - I see some (silent) ppl aren't happy bc they're in the half getting called out lol.

2023.06.05 16:51 Free_mind370 adding quest item to inventory via save file edit
Hi,
In twenty-one ceremonial daggers which is in Pulura's Fall I cannot find one dagger. I even buffed a party member's perception to 27. still nada.
The dagger I cannot find is "Kigven the Goldenmare" which requires a perception check near broken crate and boat at the south bottom corner.
I give up, enough time wasted. Can anyone please tell me how to add this item to the inventory in the player.json or party.json or some other file?
Thank you

England/usa Dudes from all over the trans world, in this context especially, the ftm, I want you to know, no, because you know it (maybe yes or no) but always remember, we still have this trans problem, as if not it would be little effort that we make to float without a boat in the middle of the ocean, if you want to call it problems, but also all our internal life, we have to remember more than ever that we are not alone, no matter how it seems, inside us we have so much, that sometimes it seems to us something else that it is not, but I insist on that without fear of being wrong this time, that we are not alone, guys, we have, we have something to move forward and not alone, although we do not see it from Sometimes, what we have is much more than that, for example, who has only understood that he is trans to begin with, and consequently, from that moment on, what can I do from here on? that it is at the point where it is for each one of us in transit, the important thing is that there, yes, yes, there at the end of the road is the authentic light at the end of the road, all this is also for me, for my inner child who needs so much of that love that he cannot have, but as the good father I have never had would have done, I take care of him, my little traumatized child from within, like the father who was never with me, so I take care of myself and I always heal more and more alone, because it is never enough, and we always have to continue step by step taking care of ourselves, giving ourselves self-love, no matter how difficult it is to stop tripping over the same stone or even with others even worse. That's why this is for all of you, even if you don't know each other at all, and also for me. submitted by NP51279 to FTM_SELFIES [link] [comments] |
2023.06.01 15:41 gdore15 Trip report : Three months in Japan including one in Kyushu.
In this report, I'll mostly list the city I visited during my trip and give my general impression or talk about what I did.
I spend a total of three months in Japan, the first 11 days around Tokyo, two weeks to move between Osaka and Hiroshima one month across Kyushu and finally back in Tokyo for a month, with some overnight trips in the Kanto area.
You can check my
itinerary for Kyushu, it will give more detail on location I planned to visit in each city (I mostly followed it) and also gives a bit more info about me. I also wrote about
traveling as a Hololive fan and posted on the dedicated sub, but here I posted about
anime shopping a bit more in general.
If you want to get my extra tips that you would not usually read here or in other guides, I posted
my tips on JapanTravelTips.
Walked from 9k to 31k steps by day, an average of 15k to 20k depending on the month I look at. Total cost including flight was about 8000CAD, I mostly stayed in hostels or similar accommodation, did not use JR Pass and mostly eat food in restaurant while moving around, but back in Tokyo I did much more convenience store/grocery store shopping for food. It did include a lot of craft beer and a bit of souvenir shopping.
Feel free to ask question, especially if I mention a place that you would like to visit, I can give more info. Or if you want to see picture of anything I mentioned, let me know I can try to share.
Kansai/Chugoku - Arima : I only visited during the day, but if you are looking for a nice onsen town close to Osaka/Kyoto/Kobe, then I would recommend. The ambiance might not be as charming as Kinosaki, but you still have the feeling that you are in a small town that revolve around onsen and that is easy to walk. The two main onsen are fine, pretty typical onsen experience if you ask me. Sure you can find nice ryokan too.
- Kobe : Went before and to different area, went to two sake breweries in Nada on my first time and would recommend if you want to know how sake is made. This time I went around Chinatown around lunch and it was a great experience, there is so much street food vendors and people everywhere, really recommend. Finished the day with a night view from Venus Bridge, the view was better than from the Nunobiki Herb Garden.
- Akashi : The main shopping street was really busy, lot of restaurant that serve the local specialty, Akashiyaki, a kind of takoyaki but much eggier taste and texture, you dunk it in soup to eat it (instead of putting sauce on it). The castle is skippable unless you hunt stamps and the history museum is heavily in Japanese.
- Himeji : The castle is huge. Honestly I really recommend to try to see one of the original castle and this one is usually the one that make the most sense to people. Went there close to opening time and could visit the castle and Kokoen garden before lunch. Then hiked Mount Shosha to see Engyo-ji. The hike is not too difficult, the temple is nice but really big, it will take a while to walk around even if you take the ropeway (it was under maintenance when I went).
- Ako : Could interest history buff as it is the city from where the 47 ronin from the Chushigura story come from, so the local shrine and the history museum do have things related to it. I actually liked going to see the salterns at Ako Seaside Park. Ako was know to be a big sea salt produced in the past and there is outside exhibit that show how it is done. They also do workshop and weekly demonstration, but even without that I found it interesting.
- Bizen (Imbe) : Unfortunately went when the museum was close for change in exhibition. This is a really different sightseeing experience as there is little to no "sight", spent most of the day going from one pottery store to the other. It's easy to get an idea of the Bizen-yaki style, I did not like the red-ish items that much but got a nice tea cup in darker color.
- Okayama : The castle and garden are ok, might not be my first recommendation for that combo (Himeji would probably win). The castle focus on the sengoku era, so if you like that part of history you might appreciate. Then went to Kibitsu-jinja where there is a long corridor. Can also learn about the story of Momotaro. If the weather had been better, cycling around Kibi is apparently nice. Do not try the Doppo Peach Pils, I would barely call it a beer, too sweet.
- Kurashiki : By the video I saw, it made it sound much bigger. The historic area is not that large, so if you do the boat ride, it won't be that long. There is still a nice vibe and you can get a good taste of a more preserved neighborhood.
- Fukuyama : Mostly used this as a convenient place to stay, there is not much to do. When you go to the touristic information and they tell you the top two things are the castle and Tomonoura, well, it show that this is not a top touristic destination. Took a more relax day and only walk to some temple/shrine.
- Tomonoura : Here we can also get a taste of preservation of older neighborhood, bus on a smaller scare and different building style compared to Kurashiki. If you are into history and specifically Bakumatsu, you might want to see the small museum about the Irohamaru and Sakamoto Ryoma as the boat sank nearby. The nearby island is nice and you can go for a relatively easy hike, but nothing special.
- Onomichi : Love Onomichi, I've been several times already. The city is always as quiet with as little attractions, but still like the vibe. Cherry blossom where quite nice in Senko-ji park. While I have not done the cycling, I visited the islands on Onomichi side. This time I went to Mukaishima for a hike and the view was fantastic. Yes, doing the Shimanamikaido cycling is a way to enjoy it, but it is not the only way to enjoy the islands and the view they can offer. Got recommended a really nice bar that it next to impossible to find without being told (can give more info).
- Hiroshima : After several days without seeing much international tourist, here the main sight like the peace park and even the castle are obviously popular destinations. I do not think I have much to add about Hiroshima that you cannot find elsewhere.
Kyushu - Fukuoka : Went before and from my first trip would recommend the Fukuoka City Museum for a nice history museum. This time went to see teamLab, was my first experience and it was quite fun, I can give more info on that too. Went to Maizuru park (Fukuoka castle ruin) and had beautiful cherry blossom.
- Yoshinogari : While most historical location showcase more modern aspect of Japan, it was a really interesting experience to see a larger scale location dedicated to Yayoi era. Usually you might see one of the house from that era build in a random park/museum, but here you have the full village with different type of building and the whole walls around. Quite interesting if you are into older Japanese history.
- Saga : Was a convenient stop for accommodation, but there is not that much to see. The castle ruin have a reconstructed palace, one of the (if not the) first to be reconstructed. While it is nice, it is really not as flashy as the one in Nagoya castle (in Nagoya city, not Nagoya castle ruin in Saga) or Kumamoto castle.
- Arita : Similar to Bizen as the day was focused on visiting pottery/porcelain shops. Here the Kyushu Porcelain Museum was open and I would really recommend, especially as it's free. Really nice experience to see the different style of porcelain made around Arita, it did contrast with my perception that the style was kind of the same across all what is produced, but there is actually a lot of different style.
- Takeo : My main reason to go was to see teamLab exhibition, but along the way stopped by different nice garden. Was kind of in a strange time, cherry blossom was almost over and azalea just starting, so I had a bit of both, but not peak of either. teamLab I also did the Mikuneyama Rakuen onsen. While you pay a bit of a premium price, I think that you do have a good onsen experience. The exhibition was also quite nice and despite seeing some other people, I mostly had the art installation for myself. Can give more info if you want.
- Nagasaki : Second time in Nagasaki, found the Chinatown a bit dead compared to Kobe. Did the must do things on my first trip like peace museum, Dejima and Mount Inasa at night (would recommend to do these), this time did Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture that is interesting as it focus on the trace with various foreign country, Clover garden that is nice if you are interested in Late Edo/Meiji presence of westerners in Nagasaki. Also did Kameyama Shachu Memorial Museum as I like Bakumatsu and Ryoma. Will continue to recommend two days in Nagasaki.
- Unzen : Really unique to walk around Unzen Hells. Did some hiking around, but if you have a chance, going to Nita Pass and up the ropeway is probably better, but the bus to Nita Pass was not running when I went ant the only other option was an expensive taxi ride.
- Shimabara : While the castle have nothing unique, the exhibition inside is quite interesting as it will tell more about the Shimabara rebellion and the hidden Christians. Also tried a local sweet that is like small dango in a sweet syrup that strangely taste a lot like maple syrup.
- Kumamoto : While it is a major city in Kyushu, I felt that appart from the castle, there is not that much to do. Right now the castle is only partially reopen as they are still repairing the damage caused by the 2016 earthquake.
- Hitoyoshi : Unfortunately difficult to access by public transport because of the Hisatsu Line was severely damaged by floods in 2020, you can still go by bus, but it makes it more difficult. You might think that goin by car is the better option, but considering that Hitoyoshi is known for Kuma Shochu (made with rice), you might want to walk to the shochu distillery to partake in some tasting. Also went into a miso and soy sauce factory, that was interesting. Overall not a lot of things to see but still nice countryside town.
- Kirishima (Myoken onsen) : The onsen area is not the most convenient to access by public transport, but there is still a bus going. It's getting more difficult if you want to visit some sights around. I ended up being quite lucky as two different person stopped to offer me a ride to my next location. Would only recommend if you have a car or if you are really a big fan of Sakamoto Ryoma.
- Kagoshima : I was expecting to need more than a day to visit Kagoshima, but for the city itself, a day seems alright. Shukkei-en is nice and offer a good view of Sakurajima, the garden is also beautiful. Just make sure to get in the sightseeing bus that stop at the entrance. Went to the Meiji Restoration Museum, especially as I like the bakumatsu era. I could have spend my second full day in Sakurajima instead, but the rain was not especially pushing me to do outside activities.
- Yakushima : The car ferry was not running so had to pay 22 000yend for the jetfoil. This also changed my total ferry schedule. I initially planned a single day of activity, but ended up leaving in the afternoon of the second day so could re-schedule. On my first full day I went to Hirauchi kaichu onsen, that is a onsen in the ocean, only accessible at low tide, was kind of interesting, but it's mixed gender and you are technically supposed to go naked... except that the other people ether had swimsuit or towels to properly hide themselves, while I had a borderline too small towel. Only had 15 minutes to enjoy the water before going back on the bus to Ohko waterfall, that is quite nice. There I met someone who offered me a drive. My initial plan to walk toward Seibu Rindo, a forest road with wild deer and monkey. Let's say that considering the distance, I realize that my initial plan was not that good. Second day wend to Shiratani Unsuikyo, really nice hike with a great view if you reach the end of the train. The bus schedule does allow to easily do the hike if you start in the morning. Overall, I think Yakushima is doable by public transport, but it does require much more planning, kind of glad I had a ride. Also was lucky to get great weather all the time I was there.
- Ibusuki : I asked for recommendation of places to go and was recommended Chiringashima twice, not bad if you have some time to walk around the island and you are on time for low tide, but terrible bus schedule, so I went by bus and returned by walking. A bike rental would have made things easier. The special thing in Ibusuki is the sand bath, it is a strange feeling to be buried in the sand. The main place where you can do it is big and really well organized, I saw a place in Beppu that offer sand bath, but they seemed to have a somehow long wait. Appart from that, you need to go outside of town if you want to do more things.
- Makurazaki : a bit of a pain to reach by train/bus. My main goal was to see a shochu distillery. Honestly not totally sure it's worth going that far especially considering I saw other places easier to access. They also produce sweet potato based beer, not bad, but also not the best I tried during my trip. Had to eat some bonito as the city is know to be a big producer of katsuobushi.
- Shishibu : Mostly went because I wanted to visit a tea farm. Went to Osumi Teanery, they have a member of their staff that is American and that will do the tour with you. There is just so much we can see of the process in the factory as it is a running factory (at least in season) that is not build to have viewing deck on the production, then despite the rain we went to see the fields and talk about how the tea is cultivated. Also did a hojicha workshop, so that was fun to learn how to roast your own tea. While the place is not the easiest to access, the staff helped me get there so at the end it was relatively easy to do.
- Nichinan (Obi) : Kind of fun castle town, they have a special map with coupons and a list of participating restaurant. You buy the map then you can exchange the coupons of food items to eat while visiting the town. The castle does not have anything exceptional, but still fine.
- Miyazaki : First day was initially dedicated to Aoshima, but I ended up not spending as much there as I thought. The rock formation is interesting, that is for sure. Used the rest of the day to go to Udo-Jingu (that is technically in Nichinan), not sure it's worth the full cost of the bus, but it's an interesting shrine built in a cave close to the ocean. Miyazaki city in itself does not have that much, the nature and history museum is nice, but as many nature museum, I feel more geared toward child, but it was free, so why not.
- Hyuga : Honestly my biggest surprise. I was initially only planning it as a stop before getting in the bus to Takachiho. Ok, it's quite a long walk so a car or maybe a bike would be better, but Umagase was really a natural wonder, it's really beautiful and you can feel the power of the ocean. You might as well stop by the Sea Cross observatory and a point called Sanpo (next to the sea cross). Then you can also check Omi shrine and Uto shrine, the second being a small shrine build in a cave quite close to the ocean.
- Takachiho : Again after a while just seeing tourist once in a while, it show that Takachiho is a popular spot for tourist (both Japanese and Foreign. While the gorge is nice, I was much more impressed by Umagase. Also you cannot always ride the boat and it was close the days I was there. For me the Takachiho Kagura was more interesting than the gorge. One difficulty was to find a good hostel as the one easy to book is next to Amanoiwato shrine, that is a bit far from Takachiho shrine and no bus at the time of the kagura plan. But I found guesthouse sankaku thatwas perfectly located and the host, Asuka, was really friendly. Went to Amanoiwato shrine the next day and I think that more than the shrine in itself, the mythology around it is much more interesting. While it is only in Japanese, they do a small tour almors every half hour so you can see the sealed entrance of the cave where Amaterasu hid.
- Takamori : That was one more intermediary stop, got to see one of the One Piece statue (that I do not really care about). Got great view on Mount Aso. Went to Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine (that is a good walk or infrequent bus from the station), and was surprised to see what felt like a tour bus stop there. Yeah, it's nice to see the torii and the staircase in the forest, but I would not do a day trip from Kumamoto to there as I've seen people here wanting to do that. Also the train line is supposed to fully reopen this summer so it will be easier to access.
- Aso : My worst day. It rained and the top of the mountain was in clouds. Honestly I should have saved my money and not go on top. But if you are blessed with good weather, I am sure that it is fantastic, I can say that just by the gorgeous view I had on the mountain the previous day.
- Beppu : Yes, Beppu is know for their onsen, but I do not especially feel a special vibe about the city. When I went to the tourist info to have recommendation, appart from the hells that I already visited previously, it was pretty much just to get out of the city to attractions around. Got recommended Takegawara Onsen, it's fine but the bath is small and there is no soap, so bring your own if you want to wash. They also do sand bath, but seems to take time as the place have limited space. It's also located in what I would call a red light district with plenty of girls bakyabakura/soapland, so that is also... interesting. Would highly recommend Beppu Brewery, that seems to be fairly new. Got their tasting set that include a kabosu weise, kabosu is Oita local citrus, then tried the kabosu session. But if you see kabosu beer at the souvenir shop, do not try Kabos and Honey, it's the second worst beer I had on my trip, really sweet. (I wat getting into fruity beers before going to Japan, sour beer are good, not sweet beer).
- Oita : Listening to people, I felt that Oita was not really getting much appreciation here, but I found that there was more museums than in Beppu, like the Oita Prefecture Art Museum and Oita Art Museum (but I'm not that into art museum). While yes, there is no that much around the station area, I wished I had searched a bit more about the history of the city, the great discovery was the Old Otomo Residence and Garden, It is a small museum that will introduce you to Otomo Sorin, probably more know as the christian daimyo, would have liked to see if there is more locations related to that part of the region's history. The castle ruin was less interesting as there is not much exhibition, so pretty much only went to get the castle stamp. Getting a car to get to the interesting points a bit further around the city could have been more interesting tho.
- Usuki : My first idea here was to visit a series of temples as part of a pilgrimage, but it ended up not being much of a good idea as the second temples I went to was close, so I kind of abandoned the idea. Then I rented a free bicycle from the tourist information and rode it toward the stone carved buddha, unfortunately the back tire went flat and I decided to walk back instead of going all the way to the buddha. Was a bit unfortunate, but the city had some nice streets with older buildings and the food was good.
Kanto - Sakura : Not much people go there but I would really recommend the history museum. If you decide to go, make sure you bring you phone with headphones and a power bank, if you listen to all the audio guide, you can spend hours in the museum.
- Narita : While I might not recommend as a day trip from Tokyo, I would absolutely recommend for people who are doing a long layover at Narita and that want to have a taste of Japan without going all the way to Tokyo.
- Kamakura : Second time going, while it's kind of possible to do a day in Kamakura and Enoshima, I think that spending two days over the two places is much better. This time I went to Hokokuji and their bamboo grove is really beautiful. While I've seen bamboo elsewhere, like in Sakura, here the place is really clean, all the dead bamboo have been removed and properly disposed. Usually in natural bamboo groves, it is full of dead or broken bamboo or there is piles of bamboo that was gathered in a corner. It was not too crowded and quite enjoyable, but it is not super big. Other than that there is plenty to see in Kamakura, totally recommend.
- Enoshima : Went for the first time, while a full day might be a bit much, not too hard to spend a good part of the day walking around. Went on the first day of my Kamakura trip as the weather was nice and I hoped for a Mount Fuji view and I could see it. I had the impression you had to be at a specific spot to see it, but no you can see it right from the bridge (I think the specific spot is if you want to see both Enoshima and Mount Fuji). Despite no cloud, it was not super clear, this can be because of humidity in the air or because of Asian dust (or China Dust) that is more prevalent in spring.
- Chichibu : Kind of surprisingly, there is many anime that are taking place in Chichibu, so if you like any of them, that would be a great destination. One of the main thing advertise about Chichibu is nature, but I found that it would work much better with a car to get to the flower fields outside of the town center, or maybe by renting a car. If you want to bungee jump you can do it here (pretty sure it's the place where Chis Broad and Connor went). If you want to go to Mitsumine Shrine, then that will likely require a car rental. I stayed not to far for the night, but the bus service was... let's say not the most convenient. There would also be a bunch of hiking trains in the area around the western side of Chichibu.
- Nagatoro : Walking next to the arakawa river is a must and you might want to also do a boat dire on the river. I then hiked Hodosan, but it was not that exciting. There is a famous kakigoori place there, super popular, that's the restaurant I waited the longest for in all my trip, then you get serve a big pile of shaved ice (with the syrup of your choice) and it cost more than a lot of full meals that I had, but I do not regret the refreshment on that hot day.

2023.05.23 00:08 PyroWasUsed Constant turning/ pressure on one side
Hello all. Recently I’ve started to introduce myself to the single skull so I can be ready for next rowing season, and I’ve noticed that I’m constantly turning to the right. I figured it was the boat I was using so I got it properly rigged for myself, but nada.
I’ve noticed, with stronger strokes, that I feel more strength being used up in my right arm and leg than my left. Naturally since I’m relatively new I still got minor balance issues which don’t help setting my course.
Do I have some form of imbalance? Any recommendations for tackling this are greatly appreciated.

2023.05.18 18:45 thebrose69 Buddy wants to start doing an annual salmon fishing trip with me and his kids. I’m a fisherman, but I know nothing about salmon fishing. Tips/advice?
Hello all, so as the title states, my buddy wants to start an annual salmon fishing trip with his boys and include me since I’m essentially the cool uncle who always shows up, this trip will be like how his dad used to take him when he was growing up. But I’m also a fisherman, I have fished the majority of my life, but for things like bass and pike. I know nada about how to fish for salmon.
We will be fishing in Lake Huron somewhere in Michigan’s thumb, probably the Port Austin area. I have never been there myself so I don’t know anything about options for piers or shore fishing or whatnot, so are piers still the best non boat option? I do know that OctobeNovember is a good time to go as that’s when they run.
Also, I don’t know what kind of gear I need from line weight to bait, so some good options for those would certainly be helpful and I can go from there. I figure/hope some of my current gear will work but certainly not all of it. Like I already have steel leaders ready to be used and 20 lb test braid already on my reels. I don’t figure I’ll be able to use any of the same bait/lures that I have but that would be cool if I can.
Thanks in advance for any tips/advice you can send my way!

2023.05.16 19:25 Abeerotyn03w WIBTBF for NOT getting my son (15M, 16M in 6 weeks) all the comic books on his birthday wish list even though husband insists I should?
My son is 15, and his birthday's in 6 weeks time. For his birthday he wrote down a wish list on the computer, and it had on it:
- Superman comic books x 15 issues, 1993-1994
- Batman comic books, Batman: Year One
- Trump: The Art of the Deal
- Every single issue of Spider-Man, 1995-2008
- NADA JD Power Marine Appraisal guidde 2021 boats, https://www.ebay.com/itm/354575088671
- December 1986 NADA boat apprraisal guidde book, https://www.ebay.com/itm/144612295014
- Harley Quinn comics, 2014-2016, 36 issues
- Superman comics 1989-2020, all issues
I showed the birthday wish list to my husband and said it'd be OK to get some comics, but all of them on the list and the boat books as well, surely he can't have every single thing? I said to him that it'd be fine to get 4 or 5 comic books, but not everything on the list, and he needs to have an experience present too not just books. My husband insisted we get all of them,no matter what.
My husband insisted we get everything on the list - yes, including the boat price guides, which isn't a comic book and I'm wonderng why our son would want these especially as he's never shown interest in boats or boating. The addition of those is quite odd and out-of-character. He's never said to us anything about those.
The Trump book is something out-of-character for my son, wondering why he wants this for his birthday, particularly as he's more into Kardashians news than Trump.
AITA for refusing to get everything even though my husband said we should?

I got a buddy with a boat. He catches fish. When I join, nada. Clearly I have pissed off the fish gods. Any thoughts? Goat sacrifice? Power bait offering? We are fishing Spring Chinook.

2023.05.11 11:10 MissFerne Playing RAN and having trouble. (Of course.)
I'm trying to dive at the wreck of the Caridad and I pull the boat into the rock circle and nothing happens. It's supposed to change perspective and allow me to dive when I go into the ring but nada.
Am I supposed to do something else first? I already have the diving gear and I climbed the bat cave to the top so I need a sea urchin.
Thanks for any help. I just can't tell if this is a glitch in the game and I need to re-install or if I missed a step.

I wasn't going to give them anything for free. I wasn't about to let them throw me out of an airlock, and I figured they should drastically reduce the jail time as well.
Commander: I'm interested to know how you chose who to send your information to.
Jakub (with a smirk): I did my job.
Commander (without showing any emotion): - - Which part of your job in particular?
Jakub: Listening in on discussions going into and out of the station, of course.
Commander: I distinctly remember you reporting that you couldn't crack their coding and listening in was impossible.
Jakub (smugly): I lied.
Ms. Saleh: Hypothetically. My client admits to no actual wrongdoing regarding his service.
Jakub: Oh, shut up! I lied! I lied, I lied, I lied! I lied for days! I listened in and kept all the information to myself. I knew it would come in handy at some point. Information is power, as my mother often said.
Ms. Saleh (hanging her head): Aaa...
Commander: So you freely admit dereliction of duty and false official statements?
Jakub: Sure. Yes, I do.
Commander: Why did you commit these acts against Terra?
Jakub: Because I so easily could! You are so frecking trusting and proper and good, the lot of you, not an original thinker among you. I, on the other hand, am intelligent and shrewd. The money I didn't mind either.
Ms. Saleh: Oh, my God. Please, stop talking, Mr. Pilčík.
Commander (still giving out nothing): Money?
Jakub: I'm a masterful negotiator, as well. The angry birds paid me handsomely for the rescue plans.
Ms. Saleh (throwing her hands up): - -
Commander: They did?
Jakub: Oh, yes. I masked my voice, and my location by masking the time it took me to reply, even the bank information. They couldn't have found me later on.
Commander: So what went wrong?
Jakub: What went wrong? Despite having every minute detail of the mission those bloody bastards failed! They were supposed to kill or capture everyone and then storm the ship. In the commotion, I would have slipped into an emergency pod. I had everything planned.
Commander (showing surprise the first time during the interrogation): How...how did you think they could have "stormed" the ship?
Jakub: I would have opened the door remotely and then shut down the lights. You would have been blindsided and weak.
Commander (blinking several times): Ok, let's leave that for a moment. Why did no one else manage to listen in on the messages?
Jakub: I removed a piece, a sort of frequency filter inside all the devices, even the backup one. All other communication came through fine, just not this one because it uses a different frequency area than normal. When I came to my shift, I just put the piece back on and then removed it at the end of my shift. Easy for someone of my talent.
Commander: And why are you now telling me all this, despite your lawyer advising against it?
Jakub: Because I am the only one who knows what the avians are planning next! And I want certain things from you.
Commander: Such as?
Jakub (showing anger and deep-rooted resentment): Some respect would be nice, for a change! I want the death penalty totally off the table, and only a very short prison sentence in a lightly guarded facility back on Earth. And all information that I was ever in the armed forces and the whole treason thing removed from public records.
Commander (very politely though biting his teeth): Well, that is certainly a big ask. I will have to inform my superiors of this. It will take some time. I hope you will excuse me.
POV: Commander
The traitor was more than insufferable. Every moment in his presence was almost physically mortifying. He was intolerably conceited and outrageously stupid. Somehow he managed to be both painfully naive and wildly malevolent. The entire thing would have been ludicrous if it didn't shine a light on incompetence on our - and ultimately my - part.
We had all sensed something being seriously wrong with him, yet done nothing to either monitor him or look into his past or even sanity. Someone high up had recommended him to my superior. At the time I had thought nothing of it but now I was suspicious. Maybe this mother he mentioned with such pride in his voice was behind his promotion to my ship.
One of our specialties
was intelligence. It was time to do that. And carry out some changes to our procedures. I just really hated to make my men and women feel they weren't trusted. Aside from making the work environment bleak, that sort of thing got in the way of cooperation and hindered information flow.
I gave the assignment to look into the past of the traitorous lowlife. Then it was time to make his bartering chip disappear.
'Did his job'! As if. I was extremely glad of his idiocy, of course. But it was just so galling that he managed the betrayal in the first place.
Now, all communication was saved in multiple locations in redundant mirror data storages onboard the Bolt. Some with access only granted to senior officers. Randomly cut into portions, especially heavily encrypted message packages were sent to Terra to be reassembled. In addition, our delivery method hadn't been discovered, not to mention breached, ever. It was a virtual impossibility for the communication to be completely gone.
Additionally, with Mateo's help, we had cracked the Dromaian coding while planning the mission. All I needed was to show the "alleged" perpetrator the evidence of his leaking the mission plans, making plans with the enemy to facilitate a storming into the bolt, and negotiating the monetary compensation for the treasonous actions.
'I'll just open the door and put the lights out.' A four-year-old would come up with a more convincing plan. I mean, it's not like there would be no tech to prevent it, and sliding bulkheads, a labyrinth of corridors, adjustable gravity, and night-vision in our helmets (or in our eyes for some of us). Then the company had 186 special operations soldiers and 34 support staff. Even discounting all those participating in the mission, hardly an insignificant number. We had K9 units!
Even the last part of his plan was reckless in its folly. Yes, many Terran escape pods were really escape crafts with FTL capability. Yes, we had both onboard. But, they couldn't just be commandeered whenever the fancy took you!
Without a declared emergency (a minor scuffle at the door would hardly make anyone declare an emergency!), catastrophic failure of ship integrity or officer's code escape crafts could not be launched.
Erroneously launched pods could be returned from onboard the Bolt and the emergency crafts could be immobilized and then retrieved. We Terrans upgraded all the technology we received, bartered, salvaged, or ... let's just say 'happened to find in our possession'.
Just reverse engineering is for schmucks! What's the point of that? Terrans improve upon, we enhance, exceed, outdo, add value, and emend. We derive new ideas and new inventions from it. We create entire industries from a single found (or "found") component.
A bit over an hour later I had all I needed to confront the traitor.
POV: Counsel Saleh
I was at a loss. My client was an arrogant fool, the worst kind of client possible. This was an unmitigated disaster. He incriminated himself, proudly, and then proceeded to boast by explaining in detail how he did it. Just when I thought at least it couldn't get any worse, it did. He extorted the company commander! He withheld crucial information in exchange for a lesser verdict.
First of all, the company commander is not the person who could grant that. Secondly, this information is not crucial to the commander; it is crucial to Terra. He just committed another act of treason right in front of me!
That normally makes me a witness, thus excluding me from the position of his legal counsel. I contacted JAG. Unfortunately for me, they decided this new act of treason will be tried separately. Nothing was preventing me from continuing as Mr. Pilčík's legal counsel. Oh, "joy"!
POV: Jakub Pilčík
The old lawyer wouldn't leave me alone.
Legal counsel: Mr. Pilčík, perhaps we should take a look at the mitigating factors in treason sentencing you didn't find time to do before now.
Jakub: Why would we? My plan is coming together beautifully.
Legal counsel: Sure. But just in case every detail doesn't go well, just for a backup plan...
Jakub: Listen to me. Watch me say it: N-O N-E-E-D.
Legal counsel: How about as an academic exercise? We are just waiting for the commander to return.
My mother always emphasized the importance of learning things that might become useful later. After some ruminating, I let the silence become uncomfortable for her. A little punishment for pestering me.
Jakub: Alright, I can see some limited value in that.
Legal counsel: I have the list of mitigating factors here, in 6 § of the
Treason Against Terra (13.8.2230/1288). Mr. Pilčík, would you consider any of these applicable to you?
Jakub: "Voluntary admission of guilt", I guess.
Legal counsel: Yes, you are right, that would certainly apply!
Jakub: Do I detect some disapproval in your tone of voice,
Ms. Old Lawyer Lady?
Legal counsel (obviously gritting her teeth): None intensional, I'm sure! I apologize earnestly if something in my tone erroneously implied such!
Finally, I was enjoying myself.
Jakub: Hmm ... I'll let it slide.
This time. - - "Full confession"?
Legal counsel: Certainly, except the same factor includes "ready cooperation".
Jakub (raising his void):
Are you saying I'm not cooperative? Legal counsel: Sadly,
legally speaking, demanding a reduced sentence in exchange is not considered "cooperation". How about "past circumstances, such as abuse or trauma"?
Jakub: Like PTSD? I'm not a sad coward!
Legal counsel: That's
really not what it means but let's go on. Any chance of "emotional problems"?
Jakub: This is pointless. I'm not mentally ill. I knew what I did and I anticipated fatalities and loss of technology to the enemy. I even counted on it to make my getaway. Everyone else dead, I would have been hailed the hero as the lone survivor bringing the 'horrible' news back!
Legal counsel: You - - you - - you really attempted to murder almost 200 military personnel for your own gain!
Jakub: Go big
and go home! My mother would've been so proud of his hero son. Like mother like son.
Legal counsel: But she is the
real hero of the Sol blockade.
Jakub: Hah! She was delivering contraband to the bastards blockading us! She was making a fortune by transporting
coffee of all things to the enemy.
Legal counsel: But she broke the blockade!
Jakub: Entirely by accident. Caffeine is very addictive to them. Her clients ordered but couldn't pay, and decided to hold her until she gave them the entire cargo. Mother chose not to, and detonated a bomb she had placed beforehand. "Always plan ahead", she always said.
Jakub: Accidentally the bomb created a cascading effect on the poorly constructed installation and the whole thing blew up. She barely got out herself. By pure chance - and poor management - most of their vessels were in, queueing for maintenance overhaul. They got destroyed as well. Mother destroyed the contraband by ditching and then shooting it. Then she just made a bald-faced lie to her superiors.
Legal counsel (almost crying): That's horrible. All the statues, all the gratitude,
all the gifts...
Jakub: She
did actually save the day, just quite a lot less altruistically than you thought.
Legal counsel: But she was practically a drug dealer and a smuggler! Why would you tell me this?!
Jakub: Because while you can feel as outraged as you wish, you can never tell another soul in your life! Attorney-client privilege!
I gave her my best evil laugh. She looked crestfallen and horrified, just as I intended. I let a smug, toothy grin spread on my face. She was obediently quiet from then on.
It wasn't that long a wait until the Commander got back from the little errand I sent him on. I rubbed my hands together in anticipation of more groveling from the high and mighty Commander of the Bolt.
He walked in with a Holoslip
TM. He sat down. And... nothing. It was unnerving. Be just looked at me coldly. He didn't act subservient or like a petitioner. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore and opened my mouth to demand to know what his superiors said.
But just as I opened my mouth the commander lightly tapped his opened Holoslip
TM. A voice was heard, my voice. My voice and that of a Dromaius, agreeing on the last details of our deal, and then my voice gave the bank details. I felt faint.
At least they didn't know where the money went from there! Except, the Holoslip
TM showed every deposit and withdrawal, including my secret account. The account had an administrative notification that the funds were unavailable due to a court order. My money was gone!
Jakub: Is
this your counteroffer? You're holding my money ransom until I give you the intel?
I hold the power here! That is just some scraps compared to my mother's riches. I, on the other hand, hold the lives or uncountable lives as ransom. Terran lives, but also xeno lives! I can get back what you're holding, you can't get back the li...
Just then the commander tapped the Holoslip
TM again and out came the Dromaia informing the conspirators on the station of what was going to happen. My guarantee: gone. Then he played Dromaian communiques I had never heard myself, by many different speakers.
They had cracked their code even though I deleted the codebreaking from the computer the AI had stored it on. Had they cracked it on their own, without the AI? Who could have managed that?! And how did they have those recordings I had deleted and even scrubbed?
Commander: Mateo, and executive backups.
Jakub:
Whaat? Commander: You were wondering who cracked the Dromaian code. It was Mateo.
My hands turned into fists. Of
course it was that brat! Always prancing around in the adoration of everyone in the crew, acting
sooo smart...
Commander: And executive backups. Everything that even comes close to our systems is backed up in secret data storage units ... around ... and only senior officers can get to them. You deleted zilch. You
have zilch!
Jakub:
Zilch? Commander: Nothing, nil, nowt, zip, nada, naught, jack, diddly-squat, nix, bupkis, ko ni
*, e
∆ , 없어요

Jakub: Oh.
Commander: So, let's recap. You committed treason by conspiring with the enemy to kill children and Terran military personnel, hand over a secret Terran military vessel with all its tech and intel, by planning to steal a Terran emergency vessel, and by receiving a monetary incentive from said enemy.
Commander: When your plan failed and you got caught you commenced to
blackmail the Terran Command by withholding crucial, life-saving intel you had come by through the trust the military placed in you. Is that about right?
Jakub:
I guess. Commander: Against the advice of your legal counsel you freely also admitted to dereliction of duty and false official statements. Is that correct?
Jakub:
mnmn Commander (with a slower, deeper voice, pronouncing every syllable separately): **Is that cor-rect?
Jakub:
Yes. Commander: I don't think there's much more to discuss.
Jakub: No, it can't go like this! I'm smart and cunning! I outsmart everyone on this boat!
Commander (standing up): Funny. From where I'm standing it sure looks like you didn't.
Jakub: No! Don't go! I had long talks with that Dromaia! I'm sure there's something important I can tell you!
Commander (at the door): We have all those recordings, did you forget?
Jakub: This can't be happening. NO!! Please! There has to be something! Please, something, anything?
The commander harumphed and closed the door. I turned to my lawyer with a violent snarl.
Jakub: You! You failed me! This is all your fault!
Legal counsel: Hold on, Mr. Pilčík! You took none of my advice.
I was going to make
someone suffer. This frail, elderly woman was going to get a trashing. I prepared my fists and approached her with a mean look.
Jakub: You are going to apologize to me, even if I have to beat it out of you!
Legal counsel: I am warning you: I will defend myself and the inviolability of my body.
Jakub: Defend all you like! I am bigger than you, meaner than you, and I am a
man!
I cocked my arm back to throw a powerful haymaker. But then...she stepped
towards me and before I knew it, she threw a quick jab followed by a painful kick.
Why was nothing working for me?! They were going to make a spectacle out of me and throw me out of the airlock with the entire crew clapping and laughing.
AT ME!! No. No, no, no, no...
POV: Commander
As I walked out next to the guard station I saw on the monitor that traitorous lowlife trying to get his frustrations out by pommeling what he assumed was a soft target. How wrong he was. Ms. Saleh was a kick-boxing champion.
MP Sgt. Stavropoulos looked up from the monitor and we shared a look.
I started to walk to my next meeting, a 10-person assembly to determine if we had corrected our error with the underage POW. I didn't me it there though. A klaxon sounded and the ship entered normal space and stopped. The disturbance was on the deck with the brig. What now!
MP Sgt. Stavropoulos: Commander! The traitor prick got loose and is now barricaded into airlock #52 near the brig. He says he is opening the outer airlock to deprive us of the satisfaction!
Commander: Try to force open the inner lock
before he opens the outer one! I'll be right there!
I ran like the Dromaia were chasing me. When I got there the traitor looked right at me and opened the outer lock. His look turned scared and it looked like he tried to close the outer lock. He ran out of time.
I watched the EVA team arrive about two minutes too late, retrieve the body and start fixing the inner door the fool had broken. This death was quick but hardly instantaneous. He was conscious for about 10-20 seconds. Still, enough time to regret and get terrified.
MP Sgt. Stavropoulos: I am so sorry, commander. It happened so fast!
Commander: How did he get out of restraints?
MP Sgt. Stavropoulos: When we were escorting him to his cell, he suddenly vomited violently. He sounded like he couldn't breathe. I just opened his restraints to help him... I am sorry. He didn't seem to be in any condition to make trouble.
Commander: It's okay, Sgt., I might've done the same. He was desperate and defiant, not a good combination.
MP Sgt. Stavropoulos: Thank you, sir.
I walked briskly to my office to do my duty: call his mother.
... ... ...
Jakub's mother: So let's see if I got this right. My son committed treason, many times over and got caught. On tape. With the money. Then he got into an altercation with a female lawyer and lost in 3 seconds flat. He vomited on the corridor but took the opportunity to flee and self-terminate successfully in the nearby airlock.
Commander: These are the facts but I didn't deliver them in quite that manner.
Jakub's mother: No you were compassionate, I'm sure. I have no time for that. My son was a failure I tried to distance myself from. The only thing he was successful in was removing himself permanently and saving me from some grief. Thank you, commander. Death notice received. I authorize burial in space. Good day.
For the first time, I felt some sympathy for the man.

You
have zilch!
Jakub:
Zilch? Commander: Nothing. Nil, nowt, zip, nada, naught, jack, diddly-squat, nix, bupkis, ko ni

Jakub:
mnmn Commander (with a slower, deeper voice, pronouncing every syllable separately):
Is that cor-rect? Jakub:
But then...she stepped
towards me and before I knew it, she threw a quick, linear jab. She was tall, for a woman. She got me right on the nose. She was tall but slim, so it wasn't that powerful of a hit, but the shock! I instinctually lifted my fists to protect my head.
She retracted her hand close to her head. I expected another hit that I would counter and then beat her to a pulp. Instead, pain exploded on my side. I fell and saw her return her
leg back down. She kicked me! I think she broke a rib!
Ms. Saleh, our kick-boxing champion, performed a flawless
left jab-right roundhouse kick to his left ribcage. He was down with a bloody nose and aching side. Serves him right.
MP Sgt. Stavropoulos looked up from the monitor and we shared a wicked grin.
I started to walk to my next meeting, a 10-person assembly to determine if we had corrected our error with the underage POW. I didn't make it there though.
His eyes had frostbite when the water in them evaporated, and the blood coming from his nose froze as well. Something I didn't immediately recognize froze around his mouth.
His body started convulsing. We were running out of time to save him. I could hear the MP trying to hurry the EVA team along. He didn't have a pressure suit or even anything elastic to stop water vapor from forming in his soft tissues making them swell. He stopped convulsing and I knew it was too late.
He wasn't "dead" dead yet, just "mostly" dead, but his heart would already be too damaged for resuscitation or artificial pump replacements due to his blood boiling for the low blood pressure, and his lungs too far ruptured due to the pressure differences to be replaced with artificial ventilation.
I watched the EVA team arrive about two minutes too late, retrieve the body and start fixing the inner door the fool had broken. This death was quick but hardly instantaneous. He was conscious for about 10-20 seconds. That's how long it takes for your lungs' function to reverse and for them to exhale oxygen and replace the blood in your brain to deoxygenated, making the hypoxia set in faster. Still, enough time to regret and get terrified.
MP Sgt. Stavropoulos: I am so sorry, commander. It happened so fast!
Commander: How did he get out of restraints?
MP Sgt. Stavropoulos: When we were escorting him to his cell, he suddenly vomited violently, and more blood came from his mouth, too.
