Wfmz weather | | Not many details, but I keep coming back to this case. In 1977, an unidentified man was found in a cave in Pennsylvania along the Appalachian Trail, dead of an apparent suicide.

Found this while going through Doe Network. I'm not sure if it's because of how he was found, or just that I'm familiar with the area, but I keep coming back to this case. The police are still looking for information in this case, so if anyone has any leads, please share at the contact info at the bottom of this post.
Details
January 1977 was and is one of the coldest months ever recorded in Eastern Pennsylvania. On January 16th (sometimes reported as January 17th, but early articles list the date as the 16th), the coldest day of that very cold month, two hikers were exploring the Pinnacle area on the Appalachian Trail in Berks County. This is a beautiful overlook and one of the most popular parts of the Appalachian Trial (long-distance trail that goes over 2,000 miles from Georgia to Maine) in Pennsylvania. This area is fairly accessible and within a day's hike of the nearest road, but can only be reached on foot.
In a cave below the Pinnacle itself, the hikers found a man's frozen body. According to the Doe Network listing, the man was estimated to be between 25 and 40 years old, white, 5'10" or 5'11" tall, 155 pounds and had long, curly reddish-brown hair and a full beard. He also had a t-shaped scar on his chin Because he was frozen, his face was still recognizable and a sketch was produced that can be found on the Doe network site, as well as most of the sources linked below.
Unfortunately, any photographs, autopsy reports and fingerprints seem to have been lost. The man's eye color is not recorded either. All that remains is the police sketch.

Dark brown suede/buckskin jacket with tassels on the sleeves and torso (size 38); faded blue jeans (Wrangler brand, size 30x34); brown leather belt; brown, knit turtleneck sweater (labeled Jules Pilch-Doylestown/Hatboro, size "M"); long winter undershirt and pants (size "S"), military issue with laundry mark B-0654; two pair of socks (one pair black, the other wool); brown leather hiking boots, ankle length with black Vibran soles (size 10-10 1/2); leather gloves.

He was also wearing a 14K white gold ring set with an oval blue stone, and a pair of sunglasses. His pockets contained a comb, pen, pencil, matches and $1.78. No hiking gear was found, although police noted any gear could have been buried by snow.
All sources estimate his death to have been in January, 1977. Doe Network lists the cause of death as suicide by drug overdose, but no other source I've found reports this, and it is not clear to me where the information comes from. The Reading Eagle reported at the time that an autopsy was performed at Reading Hospital and Medical Center (source: PA Crime Stoppers). No foul play is suspected
Updates
This case has received very little attention. The man was buried in the Berks County potter's field in an unmarked grave. For years, the exact location of the grave was not known, until it was located in 2019 so that the remains could be exhumed and the DNA tested.
In August 2019, the man's DNA was sent out for testing, with results expected in the next few weeks. I have not been able to find any updates on the case since then. Reports from this time say that the dental records were tested, and matched missing persons cases in Illinois and Florida.
Although articles in 2019 said results could come back in as little as three weeks, nothing has been reported in almost four years.
Personal Thoughts
There are very few details on this case, and the few that exist are sometimes reported differently in different sources (eg. the date the remains were found). I think two things are worth noting: the lack of hiking gear and the clothes the man was wearing.
He seems to have been dressed for cold weather (gloves, lots of layers, multiple pairs of socks). This, to me, suggests that he may not have set out to commit suicide, at least initially. If that was his goal, he could have easily hiked to the cave from a nearby road, without the need for such heavy-duty clothes.
One detail sticks out to me: the man's sweater had a label from a store with locations in Hatboro and Doylestown, PA. These towns are in nearby Bucks and Montgomery Counties, PA, but the Appalachian Trail does not pass through either Bucks or Montgomery; knowing the area and the Appalachian Trail, it would be very difficult for a through-hiker to reach Hatboro or Doylestown or even acquire the sweater from a local thrift store. Perhaps he borrowed it from someone, but I feel like this suggests he at least spent time in Southeastern Pennsylvania and was not just passing through the area on the trail.
Although hiking gear could have been obscured by snow, I do wonder if he set out unprepared for a day hike and simply froze to death. The cause of death listed by Doe Network (suicide by drug overdose) doesn't seem to have any source online, but it seems like an odd thing to make up.
Regardless, this case sticks with me for some reason. Maybe it's the haunting sketch, or the location where he was found, but I keep coming back to it. Something about it makes me very sad, and I hope someday this man is identified and any loved ones he may have had get closure.
