2023.03.24 04:00 meshah My wife (27F) asked her dad (63M) and mum (60F) to leave his dying mother's (85F) house.
This is the latest episode in a very complicated relationship with my (26M) wife's (27F) parents. FIL is a manipulative and passive aggressive person and MIL is pretty compliant. She's tried to leave him multiple times over the last 3 decades but it's a pretty familiar story. For some context, they're fully absorbed by the QAnon conspiracy world and have always been obsessively fundamentalist Christian. In the last incident that blew up with them a couple of years ago, FIL ended up trying to send me emails thousands of words long to explain why he physically beat my wife when she was a child - his conclusion was that he realised when she was 18 that she'd been demon possessed her whole life and that's why he needed to punish her so hard. Last year, we moved with our two young kids 3000km (2000 miles) south in our country (not USA). Being further away from them was a major reason for the move.
In-laws being around triggers my wife to say the least... They definitely bring out the worst in people. We now live in the same city as FIL's mother and we are living in her house, fixing it up and being close to support her since she went into care not long before we moved. Last week she went into hospital and things aren't looking particularly good, so a couple of days ago the in-laws flew in to see her. We've been visiting her most days but our life is also as busy as you'd expect for a family with 2 young kids. The expectation with us living in grandma's house is that family can stay here too when they're in town, so we were fine setting up a spare room for the in-laws for the 5 days they would be here. We clearly explained that we would be busy, that we only have one car (5-seater with two big child seats in the back), so we wouldn't really be able to take them anywhere, recommending they hire a car.
They said they would sort a rental. Well, when they flew in there was no rental. They said there weren't any available (absolutely not true - I checked). They said they'd just Uber where they needed to go.... okay, no worries. Well the next day they started asking when we're not using the car so they can drive to the hospital or if we were, could we drop them.... We made a point of the fact that they should have just rented a car but they insisted 'it's fine'... even though it's our car not theirs to decide what's fine and what's not. So yesterday, we'd dropped them everywhere they needed to go and in the afternoon they even took the car by themselves to go to the hospital again. They were late coming back which made me slightly late to a basketball game I was clear about the timing of. FIL is here to visit his potentially dying mother, so I try to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Today, wife has multiple appointments to get to and is stressed about making the whole day work. We'd planned that she'd have the car and I'd be dropping the eldest to school on our bicycle equipped with kids seats for days like this, and the youngest would be chilling out with me as I WFH. The in-laws insisted that since my wife wouldn't actually be using the car during her various appointments, they should just drop her to them and they could do school drop and that it's so nice of them to offer to do this for us... My wife was visibly tense about the idea, but reluctantly agreed since it seemed they really wanted use of the car. During the car ride (that I wasn't there for), they all got into an argument and my wife ended up saying something like 'I kind of wish you would just leave' before getting out of the car. She'd also asked very clearly that when they do school drop off, they text me to let me know he made it safely since we like to be certain about his location - we're anxious parents but he also has ASD and we just like know for sure where our kids are. It felt like a reasonable request.
FIL text me saying we need to talk because my wife freaked out on them 'out of the blue' and they were both upset. My wife had already called and given me a brief run-down of the conversation. Firstly I asked FIL if our kid was safely at school since I hadn't heard anything (dropoff was 30mins ago by now). He didn't reply for 45 minutes so I had to call the school to verify he was there. I then said that my wife was pretty upset about the car situation on top of the stress of having extra people in the house and that he could talk to her about it since they're both adults and I don't need to get involved unless my wife wants me to; I said I'm supportive of her first and foremost. He had a go at me about how I should only be supportive of 'the truth and what's right' and how wrong it is that I'm not doing everything I can to resolve the issues between them... and also how my wife doesn't seem to want to resolve the issues in their relationship. I called him out pretty bluntly - I said that abuse and trauma aren't simply 'resolved' in a relationship and he'll never have my sympathy in this discussion. I reminded him exactly what he said about her being possessed by demons and said again that I have her back.
I said it might have been a miscommunication about the car situation, but to eradicate any doubt said that we need use of our only car to get around and they should have made their own arrangements. They weren't doing us any favours by dropping my wife to appointments or son to school. Regarding my wife asking them to leave, I spoke with my wife and we agreed that it's fine if they stay until Sunday like they planned and we'll just make ourselves scarce over the weekend... and they should, you know, be visiting grandma instead of picking stupid fights like this. I made it clear to FIL multiple times that I'm not interested in facilitating any kind of conflict resolution process like he wants but I'm happy to smile, keep the peace and move on, behaving like adults. He said that he can't fake relationships - I said we need to accept that we have different world views, different beliefs and there are things that have happened that can't necessarily be reconciled, but we can be still be amicable. Well, they brought our car home, got their stuff and left in a taxi. They didn't say anything to me, but on their way out said to my 3yo son, 'I hope we get to see you again sometime', before slamming the door crazy hard on their way out. They obviously think we're assholes and don't feel welcome here, even though I made it very clear they're welcome to stay.
They're clinging on to what my wife said out of frustration and are behaving like they've been kicked out of dying grandmother's home. I feel like I made it clear enough that they could stay, but just that we didn't need to resolve a long-fractured father-daughter relationship in order for them to be here. We're not sure what to do from here.

Are plastic stakes for the canopies really not enough? I’m flying in, so I’m not sure what else I could do to keep it down. Any recommendations? Should I just try to use the metal stakes as well? (I will pick them up after) Also, do people’s canopy’s really end up in the sky and hit cars? I’m nervous that someone canopy will hit my rental car? :/

I've always been a pretty anxious flyer but for the most part, I have been able to reassure myself with facts and other people's experiences. This subreddit has been helpful, too.
Unfortunately, I think I am starting to succumb to ~media hype~. I knew the news stories were starting to become a problem for me, so I unfollowed every topic related to aviation prior to flying out on my current trip.
Well, I was curious about how the recent FAA safety summit went so I searched for news on that. (Possible TW) The news sites were saying that there was yet another "close call" at Burbank while the summit was happening. This is the second such event to happen at Burbank recently.
I am flying out of Burbank tomorrow to go home. I am overcome with so much anxiety right now. I used to at least be able to tell myself that I wasn't actually in my danger, but the mEdiA hYpE is making me feel like I am in imminent danger and that flying is no longer safe (especially from Burbank).
I am tempted to hold onto my rental car and drive home, but the logical part of my brain thinks I would only be doing that to assuage my anxiety rather than avoid impending doom. There would also be actual consequences from choosing to drive, like having to pay my company back for the missed flight and gas expenses. But the fear is still there.
If anyone can slap some sense into my head I would appreciate it.

I have been on antidepressants since the age 15. I have severe anxiety that sometimes leads to anxiety attacks. In the past few months…. 1) I hit a deer equaling $4000 worth of damage with a $2000 deductible; 2) I used all my sick days at work; 3) my psychiatrist quit and I wasn’t able to get my Zoloft or adhd meds filled; 4) an electrical panel in my car stopped working; 5) I paid almost $200 for a rental car while mine was in the shop and I couldn’t even use it the first day because it wouldn’t make it up my icy driveway, causing me to be late for work.
It was that day I decided to go to my usual walk in clinic to see if they could call me in Zoloft because I was having a hard time getting out of bed. See, your body can’t stay in fight or flight mode indefinitely (which is what anxiety is) so eventually it has to shut down (depression). I get there and they tell me I have to have an appointment. That was apparently the straw that broke the camel’s back. I began crying and hyperventilating. It was one of my worst panic attacks ever. Part of me was concerned they were going to have me committed. They were able to call in a 30 day supply and made me a follow up appointment. Which was today.
And they remembered my scene. So obviously my erratic behavior is because I’m a drug addict. I never once had to take a drug test to get my adhd meds with my old psych. This time they asked me to pee in a cup. I have anxiety so of course my first thought was that they thought I was bonkers the other day, but I had nothing to hide so I obliged. When I got home I got a call saying they couldn’t call in my meds because I tested positive for opiates. Excuse me? That’s IMPOSSIBLE. They said I would need to bring in a prescription to explain the reason I failed. I said I hadn’t taken anything, and that I could now care less about my medicine but this needed fixed to clear my name. They said they could send it off to the lab, and I said YES YOU BETTER DO THAT! Yes, I am still being emotional and irrational at this point. Not because of what they are accusing me but because my seratonin and dopamine receptors DO NOT WORK like they should…which is the reason I was going there for help. Instead, they decide to bring a devastating accusation against a person with emotional dysregulation (ADHD) and anxiety (generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety disorder). It is negligence. What if this behavior caused a person to harm themselves? Do no harm. The way in which they handled this was very harmful. Almost as if they have no training on how to handle delicate individual (which medical personnel should).
I did some research and guess what….poppy seeds! I just made a batch of lemon poppy muffins the day before yesterday. Surely the lab will be able to differentiate between poppy seeds and an actual drug, right??? It’s a small town and I KNOW they will break patient confidentiality because I’m a teacher…I just know it…I’ve had soMe of their kids in class. Of course they will tell other parents.
I’m done with my ADHD meds…I refuse to jump through these hoops anymore. And to be treated like a criminal. I’m erratic yes, but not because of drugs. I’m falling apart right now.

His cars and spaceships benefit the wealthy, depend on massive tax subsidies to survive, and are bad for the environment. He flaunts supporting coups in Bolivia, and makes bank off of Congolese child slaves to mine his conflict minerals. Alternative: Buy cars made by unionized companies. Buy used cars. Or better yet, take the bus or ride a bike!
- Amazon, Whole Foods, Washington Post, other Jeff Bezos companies. This daddy-made billionaire is also on the front lines of union-busting and works his workers to the bone. Remember the poor workers who got killed in an Amazon warehouse from a tornado because they were told to stay put instead of evacuate? Remember the poor drivers who have to pee in bottles, and then Jeff Bezos lied about that? Buying Washington Post is also a direct threat to a free and open media. Alternative: Shop local. Plan ahead.
- Walmart. I know that this is a tough one for people who might not have many other options. But for food at least, maybe try to shop at farmer's markets, co-ops, etc. (and ask if they take food stamps/EBT - a lot of them do!). Alternative: Lots of others.
- Apple. Uses Chinese slave labor, conflict minerals, etc. Opposes the right to repair. Intentionally made older iPhones so slow as to become unusable. Alternative: Android (run by #6, Google, which isn't much better...)
- Nestle. Literally steals clean water from those who need it the most. Lies about formula being better than breastmilk. Alternative: Just look on the back of a package to see its logo.
- Google. "Do No Evil" my ass. Gmail may be free and convenient, but have you ever wondered how does Google make money? YOU are their product. All of your information is read and sold by them. Google mines your emails and sell the info to marketers. Google cooperates with the government to spy on you. Also did a mass layoff just because they could. Alternative: Private, paid email services. Use DuckDuckGo or other search services. Use your browser's private mode, delete your browsing history & cookies whenever possible.
- Disney. Steals others' ideas and then pimps product lines as its own. Look up "Kimba the White Lion" on Wikipedia. Look up "María Salud Ramírez Caballero" - Disney (Pixar) interviewed her, took her photos, made her into the Mama Coco character, lied to her saying they'll take care of her, and then told her to fuck off. Disney also fires American workers and replaces them with foreign indentured servants. Alternative: Read books, essays, go out and play sports, organize a union, watch something else. Trust me, you'll survive without their garbage brainwashing.
- Microsoft, Adobe, other big software companies. They seek to corner their respective markets, then turn their products into a "service" for which you pay rent - forever. You don't own anything, you are just a cow to be milked until you die. Alternative: Lots of other software companies out there which offer similar apps, including much lower cost & free/open source options.
- Uber, Lyft, and similar "tech companies". Their whole business model is to exploit labor law and market regulations. They control the how, where, when, etc. of their workers' jobs, but then claim that their workers are not employees to avoid paying wages & benefits & taxes. Their workers are also shouldered with all the liability (e.g. crashing their car) that comes with their jobs. Alternative: Call your local taxi company. Use a restaurant's own delivery service, or go pick up the food yourself. Make your own dinner. Plan ahead.
- Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Chase, basically any huge national bank. The only question to ask is, why haven't these evil, pieces of shit banks been taken apart, and all of their executives locked up in jail? Because they control the government through their lobbyists and "donations". I know these national parks are not fully open in the beginning of May. I lived in Yellowstone for a summer and was able to explore these national parks.
My best friend and I are taking a road trip and I am willing to go back to these amazing places to show him how great it is. We will be car camping and camping.

Rental car ending tomorrow - I HAVE NO CAR! HELP!
November someone stole a truck, ass ended an SUV that then ass ended me. Totaled my car and it was during the TWO WEEKS OF MY HUSBANDS ENTIRE LIFE THAT WE DIDN’T HAVE INSURANCE! It was too early for it to be showing in any systems so cops didn’t know it was uninsured. Aka we didn’t get ticketed or the car towed. Car was still drivable; just totaled due to amount of damages.
They admitted fault. Obviously.
Their insurance company scheduled me a rental, came out to see the car, didn’t know it was totaled, estimated and sent a $6,000 check.
I went to take my car to the mechanics and before I turned my keys in i found out they canceled my rental AND canceled the check. I’m assuming the Insurance company is trying to get out of paying for damages because they know I didn’t have insurance so they’re trying to find loopholes in the legal system. Because they NOW are telling me to use my insurance they will “reimburse me” even though I don’t live in a state where that’s done & lying to me saying it won’t raise my rates 🙄
They sent me this letter on March 3, 2023 (4 MONTHS after the accident and this is the first thing I’ve received from them)
“We are investigating your claim, and therefore cannot authorize repairs, towing and storage fees, rental use, or other related expenses to your vehicle. If you have collision coverage on your vehicle, we recommend having your insurance company handle the damage. If you do not have collision coverage on your vehicle, please move the vehicle to a location where storage fees will not be charged. We will not pay for excessive or unreasonable charges by shops or towing/storage companies, unusual delay in authorizing or starting repairs by you or your facilities, or securing parts for your vehicle. If we accept responsibility for the accident, we will reimburse you for reasonable towing and storage charges and other related expenses through March 6, 2023. If your vehicle remains in storage beyond that date and we are required to pay excess storage, we will deduct the excess amount from the amount you are paid. If you do not have collision coverage on your vehicle and we determine our Insured is not responsible for your damage, you will be responsible for all charges incurred. As soon as we finish our investigation, we will contact you to advise our decision and discuss next steps.”

to start off with, I know I messed up. Ididn’t get the rental agencies insurance as I’ve rented cars before and have never gotten the insurance and was never blamed for anything, so I assumed i wouldn’t be this guy right now.
I rented a car in Portland Oregon for a few days, drove it pretty gently, didn’t take it offroad, and definitely didn’t crash into anything. I know for a fact this wasn’t my fault.
side note: car had been taken offroad at some point before i rented it. it had a bunch of little rock chips on the front and back bumpers and mud sprayed inside the engine bay (maybe it was a coolant line that broke and they never rinsed the engine bay, regardless the car had been through some stuff before me)
Got a call after having dropped it off at the airport rental place this Tuesday maybe an hour after with them asking me if i knew anything about some rocker panel damage on the car. I asked what a rocker panel was, then stated I did not do anything to damage the car in that area or any other and noted that when i received it i pointed out all the little rock chips and they said they were already aware of that. the person on the phone said don’t worry about it, he just wanted to check if i knew anything about it.
Got an email at 11pm(?!) last night (Wednesday) saying this:
