2017.06.04 02:26 mahmud_ Bootleg Bollywood. Dubbing Hindi films in Somali: from hilarious amateur work, to a homegrown industry.

I remember seeing Somali dubs of Hindi movies as early as 1986. The earliest works were amateurish, and done by people who didn't speak Hindi, but only approximating the plot, possibly on first viewing.
I can't surmise who the first translators were, but I have known young, colorful people who were very in tune with Bollywood tropes and story arcs, and who would "translate" for others in cinemas. (We had terrible theater etiquette, now I realize.)
The earliest translators must have been recordings of these mouthy "embellishers", and it reflected in their handy work. Characters would often be dubbed with "explanatory" speeches, to explain earlier plot developments. For example, a villain would be made to say "haha, I was only joking about being your father, I'm actually the corrupt cop". Something very reminiscent of crude, classic Greek plays, when the actors ad-libbed on stage.
In my memory, the earliest platform for this Folk Art was Shaleemo Nasar cinema theater in Mogadishu. They had 2-3 shows per night, 6pm and 9pm, and a late night "matinee" viewing where the first film was replayed, or whatever the operator thought would be of interest to the audience.
It was this late night show that was a hot-bed of experimentation. I remember seeing everything from Italian gore, to outright pornography (I was probably 6 or 7; sworn to deathly silence whatever teenage relative left to babysit me.) But one of my most memorable films was a dubbing of an Amitabh Batchan film! ("Shaytaan" I think it was called.)
It was as crude as I have explained earlier.
However today, it appears that this "scene" of bullshit has grown to a real industry. Cursory YouTube search for "Hindi af Soomaali" returns tens, if not hundreds of these localized films. A quick perusal on a lazy Saturday, Ramadan afternoon confirms my suspicion: the translations are at least authentic and germane to the plot. The voice-over acting could use some work, and so could the recording.
One company that turns up most often is Fanproj. Below is their site, specially the trailers page.

If any sociology or film students are looking for a research project, I encourage you to investigate this nascent industry.
P.S. Remind me to write something about pornography in pre-war Somalia. I have stories :-)
