2023.03.24 02:27 cannons_for_days Hold Me Closer, SaGa Dancer — a 5 Minute Review

TL;DR — Should I Pull?

New Players

I actually really like this banner for new players. Gray and Hawke have strong potential for farming setups, and Gray can double as a sustained damage dealer if you aren't strong in that area. Barbara is a strong support character and Aisha can apply Morale Down against a boss better than basically anyone else. If you have enough jewels to pity this banner, I recommend it for newbies.

Veterans

Interesting but skippable. Gray has potential as both a farmer and a boss battle attacker. Aisha is a super reliable Medium Morale Down applier. Barbara has a huge defensive support skill that she can keep up indefinitely. For my particular roster, I could actually get good value out of Aisha and Barbara, but if your current boss battle strategy involves Guard Up or Morale Down, then they're going to look less appealing to you. Similarly, Gray and/or Hawke may look like good pick ups for you, but if you already have Sparrow or LNY Leonard, then you probably don't want them that badly. (For what they do, anyway. Faves are still faves.)

Private Dancer, Dancer for Fatestones — Limited Banner

Gray

Unit Summary

Big-ass row charge attack with passive G. Sword damage boost for the party.

Unit Analysis

OK. So Gray's damage modifiers are not actually that impressive for an attacker. He only gets 35% damage boosts. But he shares 15% of that with anyone else in the party who wields a G. Sword, which is a pretty good deal. And he's got High Protect Tension, so you can bring him to boss battles without worrying that he'll fold like a piece of origami paper.
As far as damage potential, however, that's all wrapped up in his S3 — Iai: Frost Flash. It's an SSS slash/cold Row attack, with [Fast] priority that makes him enter a Charge stance. He spends his next turn charging, and then the turn after that he unleashes his charge attack: Elegant Ice Flower. Ice Flower is another [Fast] slash/cold Row attack, this time at SSSS rank. Neither attack is at the bottom of their rank in terms of power, either, so they'll both deal solid damage, even with Gray's damage modifiers being on the low end for a damage dealer. And of course, they're Row, so if you have a 3-round stage that's all Row, Gray has a good chance of handling two of those rounds himself.
What makes this interesting is that he gets +1 BP per turn, meaning that he gets back to 12 BP once he's done charging and unleashing the charge attack. So in a battle that goes more than 3 turns, he just repeats that attack pattern indefinitely: SSS -> charge -> SSSS. That outperforms almost any character that isn't wielding multihits, even for single-target encounters. (The only character I'm aware of off the top of my head that does better than that is GLEX Darque, who is hitting himself with massive recoil to do so.)

Inherits

Well yes, but actually no.
Gray has several previous styles, but none of the skills on those styles do things that enhance Gray's role as a long-battle attacker or a multi-round farmer. Empty Blade from his NY style did just get an amplify that makes it an S-rank attack for 5 BP (that targets randomly) which is not bad for its BP cost by any means, but it still lacks the punch of the Iai -> Ice Flower rotation.

Hawke

Unit Summary

ROOOOOOOOOOW DAMAAAAAAAAAAAGE!

Unit Analysis

Hawke has 55% damage boosts from always-on abilities and will stack a medium STR buff on himself every turn. That's a pretty strong mix of damage boost abilities before we even get to his skills.
For farming, you're probably going to be using Hawke's S3, Great Axe Flash. Great Axe Flash is a D rank row attack that grants Hawke a very large Morale Up for 5 turns and then chases with an SS-rank row attack. With his STR bonus and a huge Morale Up, that SS row attack will hit like a truck.
If you're not farming with him (say, instead, that you're doing Axe Remembrance battles), then you're going to be most interested in Militant Slash, which is a [Fast] AoE slash attack that enters a defensive counter stance. He counters with Savage Slash, which a weaker AoE than Militant Slash, but it buffs the whole party's STR. So if he takes several hits, it's really going to ramp up the STR of the party. Hawke doesn't have any innate defensive abilities, and it's only a defensive counter stance instead of an evasive one, so he's not going to be able to take too many hits without some support from the rest of the party, but even just two swipes with it will still be a big uptick in Axe battles.

Inherits

Soaring Judgment from his plat SS style is a pretty solid SSS single target attack for 10 BP. It's not at the very top of the SSS rank, but with all of Hawke's built in damage abilities, it's still going to be a big ol' chunk of damage.

Aisha

Unit Summary

Morale Down like a boss.

Unit Analysis

High Protect Tension? Check. Recovers 900+ HP at the end of every other turn? Check. 6 BP Medium Morale Down for 2 turns? Oh, hell yes, check!
Medium Morale Down is 25%, and Aisha keeps that locked on a single target better than anyone else. Doll is better at applying Morale Down to a group with a cheap, every-turn small AoE Morale Down attack and a bigger, medium AoE Morale Down that she can drop in every three or four turns, but nobody else can maintain the 25% forever on a single boss the way Aisha can.
This matters because the 25% damage reduction from that Morale Down will stack with any kind of damage mitigation that isn't Morale Down. So it stacks with big Guard Ups like Barbara and Thyme have, it stacks with High Protect Tension, it stacks with Scrum Guard, the list goes on. If you have Scrum Guard and Narwhal's Water Festival up, a character with High Protect Tension is taking only ~35% normal damage. That number goes even lower with a Guard Up user like Barbara in play.
She gets +1 BP/turn and +1 BP at the end of turns where she doesn't get the heal, as well, so she'll actually gradually build up BP using Earth Thrust every other turn to maintain the Morale Down. With 60% damage boosts to attacks that hit a weakness across her three passives, she actually gets to contribute decently well in terms of damage, too. I mean, not with her native skills - those are AoEs and generally don't look designed for boss battles anyway. But she's got inherits from plat and A/S styles that are worth mentioning, so she still has potential there.

Inherits

Lots.
The simplest option would be to inherit Vertical Smash from her Valentine's A style (currently in the offbanner pool), which amplifies into an S-rank slash attack for 6 BP. It's not the biggest damage in the world, but it's easy to slot into her rotation with her bonus BP abilities.
The next one to look for would be Skydrive from her launch SS style. Skydrive amps into an SSS attack which grants the party a little boost to their Overdrive meter for 9 BP. It's significantly more damage than Vertical Smash+ and it has the added support utility of the overdrive boost, but it's going to be more rare that you can fit it in between Earth Thrusts.
Tomahawk from her S style bears mentioning because it is Indirect, which may matter if the boss in question has a counter stance that you will need to avoid sometimes. It has an amplify to C-power, but it's never been intended to be a damage mainstay since it costs 2 BP — you just use it when you need to not get counter-obliterated.
Finally, you probably wouldn't use this in a boss battle, but it's worth mentioning since it's rare — Petra Delta from her OG SS style has a chance to petrify the entire enemy party. It amplifies into a not-that-bad B-rank AoE attack for 8 BP, which lets her cast it relatively frequently if you need to reapply the petrify for some reason. With 102%+14 INT, she's not the best petrifier in the game (that's still Taria), but it's a perfectly serviceable INT level to power it, and like I said: petrify is rare. It's not something that comes into play that often, but anytime we get a Tower-style or Pandemonium event, it becomes super useful for the floors with random enemies with random resistances because it's very rare that those floors resist petrify.

Barbara

Unit Summary

Dance your way to less damage, today!

Unit Analysis

That 25% Morale Down I'm praising up there with Aisha? Barbara doubles that.
Alegrias Fascination (wow, and I thought Gray's skills were a mouthful) grants the whole party a medium Guard Up and a medium Defense Boost, and then throws in a little bit of status ailment resistance for good measure. Those stack multiplicatively, so the net result is that party taking ~56% of what they would normally take without Barbara. Now, since 25% of that comes from a Guard Up, she won't stack with nearly everything the way Aisha's damage reduction will. Notable Guard Up users include Thyme, Goddess, and Golden Baum, so if you're already using one of those characters for your boss battle strategies, then Barbara will be less appealing. But if you aren't using one of them, she almost cuts the damage your party is taking in half.
Barb has to spend her off turns using Warm Up to recover her BP, so she is 100% all-in on support. (She won't even be dealing damage with the occasional normal attacks like you get from Mariah or Matriarch. 😄) She'll still help out a little bit in the damage department because one of her abilities has a roughly one-in-three chance to grant the party a big attack boost for the turn, but since it's random you aren't guaranteed to get the most out of it like you could with someone who has spare BP for an attack they can join the Overdrive with.
Barbara herself has no innate defenses aside from a stacking WIL buff that will help her take less damage from spells (and help her avoid status effects), which is probably her biggest drawback — she's probably going to be taking more damage than anyone else on the team. Still, she benefits from her own defense buffs, so in a way you can think of her as having 44% mitigation - that she shares with the party. 😀

Inherits

As mentioned above, Barbara does not have any spare BP to use inherits unless you have external BP support, and most of her inherits are not worth using over Alegrias. However, there's one skill that does sort of rival it: Flamenco Muse, from her second Plat style. (The [Care for a Dance?] style.) Flamenco is 11 BP, so it just about completely replaces Alegrias in her rotation, but instead of offering a defensive boost, it grants the party an extreme Morale Up buff for two turns. Extreme Morale Up is 50% damage, which is huge if your party is actually in a damage race kind of scenario, or if you're employing a strategy that includes turns where you can mostly/completely avoid damage. (Leveraging evasive counters or Final Empress's Imperial Shield would be the main scenarios where you could do that.)
The other big one worth mentioning is Dark Wash+, which is an SSS shadow attack that breaks its target's stat buffs. Buff break can be very powerful against bosses that will stack buffs for themselves, so it's sometimes not a terrible play to give up the defense boosts for a buff break. The drawback here is that Dark Wash+ is a spell and this Barbara style does not have stellar AGI or INT stats, which are the stats that matter for spell accuracy. If you do not have anyone buffing one or both of those stats, Barbara is not going to be especially likely to land that spell.
Last and arguably least is Tri-Flower from her GLEX style. Tri-Flower buffs the party's WIL, which makes it a decent spell to follow Alegrias with if you happen to need to double up on the status ailment resistance for a particular turn. I can't recall the last time we got a boss that had a scripted ailment inflict which would make this a useful trick, but if you happen across one, this is a thing you can do for that.

HEBREWS   Chapter Thirteen
Behavior wanted in eyes of Gods [verses 1-19]

-5. Distance from love of silver, and be happy in your portion, for he said,
I will not let you go [ארפך, ’ahRPhahKhaH] and will not leave you [אעזבך, ’eh`ehZahBKhah].”
“In one of the sentences of Phocylides, we have a sentiment in nearly the same words as that of the apostle… Be content with present things, and abstain from others. The covetous man is ever running out into futurity, with insatiable desires after secular good; and if this disposition be not checked, it increases as the subject of it increases in years. Covetousness is the vice of old age.” (Clarke, 1831, p. II 747)
...
-9. Do not be swept away [תסחפו, TheeÇahHahPhOo] upon hands of instructions different and strange,
Lo, [it is] good to sustain [לסעד, LeeÇ`oD] [את, ’ehTh (indicator of direct object; no English equivalent)] the heart in mercy,
and not words of food [מאכל, Mah’ahKhahL] that do not benefit [הועילו, HO'eeYLOo] to whomever lives according to them [על-פיהם, 'ahL-PaYHehM];
-10. [we] have to us an altar that has not permitted [רדות, ReShOoTh] to ministers of the Tabernacle to eat from upon it.
“… we are totally unable to identify the strange teaching which is being combated. Do foods refer to Jewish ritual meals? To religious sacraments in the mystery cults? Or even to the Lord’s Supper? Because Hebrews never refers to the Lord’s Supper and because of the language of this passage (vss. [verses] 10-12), many have held that this is a protest against it, or at any rate against a materialistic and magical celebration of it. It must be admitted that the argument of Hebrews allows no logical place for the repetition of the super. Christ’s sacrifice cannot be repeated; it was once for all. The evidence is too scanty, however, for any final conclusion, although diverse and strange seem hardly the appropriate words to use if the readers were Jews by race, tempted to return to Judaism.” (Purdy, 1955, TIB pp. XI 757-758)
-11. The animals, that their blood is brought unto the Sanctuary in hand [of] the priest the great to atone the sin, their bodies are burned from outside the camp.
-12. Therefore [לכן, LeKhayN] also YayShOo`ah ["Savior", Jesus], in order to sanctify [את, ’ehTh] the people in his blood, suffered from outside to [the] gate.

-14. For we have not here a city fixed [קבע, QehBah`], rather [את, ’ehTh] that to future is to come.
“Here is an elegant and forcible allusion to the approaching destruction of Jerusalem. The Jerusalem that was below was about to be burnt with fire, and erased to the ground … About seven or eight years after this, Jerusalem was wholly destroyed.” (Clarke, 1831, p. II 749)
-15. Therefore [לכן, LeKhayN], in every moment [עת, `ehTh], we approach, in his mediation [בתווכו, BeTheeVOoKhO], a sacrifice [of] thanks to Gods,
as to say, fruit [of] lips, the thanks [המודות, HahMODOTh] to his name.
“The Jews allowed that, in the time of the Messiah, all sacrifices, except the sacrifice of praise, should cease. To this maxim the apostle appears to allude; and understood in this way, his words are much more forcible. In Vayidra Rabba sect. [section] 9. fol. [folio] 153. and Rabbi Tanchum, fol. 55. ‘Rabbi Phineas, Rabbi Levi and Rabbi Jocahanan, from the authority of Rabbi Menachem of Galilee, said, In the time of the Messiah all sacrifice shall cease, except the sacrifice of praise.’” (Clarke, 1831, p. II 749)
-16. And do not forget to repay [לגמל, LeeGMoL] mercy,
and to share [ולשתף, OoLeShahThayPh] [עת, `ehTh] the other [הזולת, HahZOoLahTh] in that to you,
for sacrifices as these are pleasant [יערבו, Ye`ehRBOo] to Gods.
“Praise, prayer, and thanksgiving, to God, with works of charity and mercy to man, are the sacrifices which every genuine follower of Christ must offer: and they are the proofs that a man belongs to Christ; and he who does not bear these fruits, gives full evidence, whatever his creed may be, that he is no Christian.” (Clarke, 1831, p. II 750)

2023.03.24 02:13 yeoulnari Wharton (no $) v. Stern (full ride)

I got into Wharton today with no scholarship and have a full ride from Stern (~170K). I'm going to write a letter to Wharton financial aid office soon to ask for aid because it never hurts, but not counting on getting a lot of $ from them, if at all. I currently work in financial compliance and am planning on pivoting into IB post-MBA; unsure at the moment how long I'll stau in IB, but even if I leave IB I'll likely stay in finance long-term.
How I'm thinking about this dilemma:
PROs of choosing Wharton
CONs of choosing Wharton
I'm genuinely torn about what is the best decision. I think the main question here is -- are there material differences in career opportunities/ benefits, primarily IB but also other areas in finance, that justify choosing Wharton over Stern in my case? What kinds of people should I try to reach out to/ speak to to help with my decision-making? The personal considerations I noted above matters too, though perhaps a little bit less.

II 750)

It is said, ‘The angel answered Manoah: I know not in whose image I am made, for God changeth us every hour: sometimes he make us fire, sometime spirit sometime men, and at other times angels.’” (Clarke, 1831, pp. II 655-666)

2023.03.24 00:14 GirlWithASafetyVest [NY] Employer Shorted Federal withholdings- is thus legal?

My Husband and I recently filed our taxes, and learned that his former employer (January-April) shorted his federal withholdings. They paid less than 1% of his earnings. They did not short his NY State withholdings.
I understand we are responsible for paying the difference, and we are kicking ourselves for not reviewing his pay stubs more carefully. We have learned that another former employee is in the same situation.
But, is this legal? His W2 form was filled out at "Married, 0 exemptions". Do we have any recourse to report this, as he no longer works there? Who can we report it to?

2023.03.23 22:53 Romas_chicken More important to you: National Team or League Team

I enjoy football (RBNY for MLS and Arsenal for EPL), but I really love baseball. This week ended the World Baseball Classic, which is an international tournament made up of national teams, much like the World Cup. I enjoyed it, rooted for PR and US. Japan won it, but was happy for them. I’m also a NY Mets fan.
While I greatly enjoyed the WBC, and would have been very happy for USA to win it, I care 1000x more about the Mets, and given a chance to choose between a World Series win or a World Baseball Classic win I’d choose the Mets winning it any day.
The question, for football fans, is what do you care more about? Like, given a choice would you prefer to have either your national team win their highest championship or your league team win their highest championship?

2023.03.23 22:51 upstate_observer Question for Veterans who have chosen to not file through a local VSO/VBA/VSA.

I see a lot of posts from Veterans self filing claims through e-benefits or directly at the RO and as a VSO/VBA, I'm curious why. I'm out of NY, a state that has fantastic Veterans services coverages and fantastic training opportunities, and I've worked with Veterans living in a number of states due to various reasons (i.e. no accessible VSO/VBA, ridiculous wait times on appointments, subpar services, faced discrimination when they reached out, etc.) but I'm curious why those that have chosen to self file or go directly to a lawyer made the choice they did. Would anyone care to share their experience? I'm asking partly out of curiosity and partly to see if there is an area that maybe my office could do better in.

2023.03.23 20:13 Commandmanda Urgent Care Report: 3/16 - 3/20/2023

During what was a rather long stint of 5 days at the clinic, I was able to observe some patterns that are concerning.
Firstly, the "sinus congestion-turned pneumonia/asthma/mystery bronchitis" that triggered serious illness in seniors has begun to feast upon the middle aged population, and occasionally some very young children.
I think I've hit upon what it is thanks to the viral surveillance data from the CDC: Human Metapnuemovirus.
Check out the data table here:
https://www.cdc.gov/surveillance/nrevss/hmpv/region.html
What symptoms does HMPV cause? Cough, runny nose or nasal congestion, sore throat and fever. More severe illness, with wheezing, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, cough, pneumonia, and in adults, aggravation of asthma, also has been reported.
As you can see from the above table, there's been a significant rise in cases recently.
The other illness troubling our population is Norovirus. For a while we were seeing mostly children and teens, but now it's spread to the adult population, including seniors.
See the CDC data table for Norovirus here:
https://www.cdc.gov/surveillance/nrevss/norovirus/natl-trend.html
The rise (huge upward curve) shows just how nasty and easily transmitted Norovirus is.
To get yourself well while suffering the effects, do not drink more than one or two swallows of water at a time. Your body can handle that. Gulping large quantities of water at a time will result in vomiting it all up, which is useless. A diluted mix of Pedialyte (1/2 water, 1/2 Pedialyte) will help with rehydration, too. Diluting it will negate the citric acid that is added for flavor, and might upset your stomach.
Eating via the BRAT diet is recommended. Just one or two tablespoons/mouthfuls at a time of applesauce, bananas, plain rice, or toast will help coat your stomach. Yogurt in small quantities or a probiotic will help recolonize your good bacteria, helping your body to recover, too.
For seriously sick patients (unable to keep anything down for 3 days): visit an Urgent Care or the ER. The patient may need an IV. There is a helpful medication called Odansetron (Oh-dance-eh-tron) which will reduce nausea. Talk to your practitioner about it if your vomiting is uncontrolled.
I have tried to ask patients if they ate at any particular establishments, or were at family get-togethers, but the answers seemed to elude them. They were so sick that they literally couldn't think straight. My thought is that it may have originated from cruise passengers who returned home with it. combined with school age children, who caught it from their peers, and infected their parents/family.
So how do you avoid both of the above viral illnesses?
'1. Wear a good mask, correctly. That means over the nose, with good facial contact, no leaks.
'2. Do not hug or kiss a sick child or adult. If someone is sick in your house, Wear a mask around them. Give them a bathroom to use that no one else uses. Seclude them to a bedroom. Clean sheets, common surfaces, etc. with bleach solution.
'3. Wash your hands frequently with soap. Always wash before and after using the bathroom and before and after eating. Wash before prepping food, and after.
Some of these steps are similar to isolation during COVID, and for good reasons. HMPV is a respiratory virus like COVID, and Norovirus is a food-borne and fecal contaminant virus. Both are highly transmissible.
.............
COVID has made a comeback at my clinic. We suddenly discovered small pockets of it, mostly in nuclear families. The other cases obviously originated from travel. The vast majority of cases were amongst visitors who came down from Northern states to visit family. They reported that they had been here for a week, and that they intended to leave in a week. Many were from Illinois, and some from Ohio and NY.
We have been seeing problems at the pharmacies with prescriptions being on backorder - specifically the Zpac, Macrobid, and Benzonatate (antibiotics, UTI meds, and cough/sinus RXs).
There's also been a growing problem with all of our clinics: nurse shortages. We cannot seem to get anyone to sign on for open days. This suggests that they are happier at their ER jobs versus at our clinics. I'm not sure of the reason for this - pay? Hours? Patient volume? New database learning curve? Still - each of our clinics are having to deal with lack of personnel. This weekend they decided to give us just one provider. So instead of two providers seeing about 30 - 35 patients each, we're seeing maybe 45 to 50 patients, stressing the provider and having to stop seeing patients from time to time because our schedule is just too full. The frustration is palpable - and has resulted in one of our best providers leaving within a week or two. That will put even more stress on those that stay.
It would be helpful if hospitalists could chime in on this! Are any of you seeing sudden changes/lack of nurses where you are?
Since we will not see the data on COVID cases till Friday, I am hopeful that all of you will take steps to limit your exposure. The Chasco Festival is set for next weekend (New Port Richey) and promises to draw very large crowds, eating concessions and the boat parade. If you intend to go, please remember your masks and hand hygiene.
Be safe!

2023.03.23 18:21 golfgod93 (Short story) People really don't have a clue...

Just had a pizza party at work with about a dozen co-workers and for some reason, I overheard this New York dude bringing up the Bernie Madoff documentary on Netflix. He just mentioned that it was pretty interesting and made some jokes about getting into the wrong business.
After a few more jokes, my other co-worker interrupted him and basically said, "no one cares about that except you." (He and the NYer always joke with each other--he's not an asshole).
But then my boss chimed in and said he'd watched it, to which the heckler said, "Okay I guess [boss's name] cares too."
That's when I kind of raised my hand, chuckled, and said, "Actually [interrupter's name], I've seen it too."
The NY guy says, "Just imagine if that was still a thing. I mean, this guy stole billions of dollars from people. How did nobody catch him for so long?"
It got kind of quiet and I said, "Yeah, thing is, it still very much IS a thing. Look up Citadel Securities and Ken Griffin. They literally create shares out of thin air. " It got even quieter. I was the only one talking now, which was pretty damn awkward.
I proceeded to mention the $65B 'sold but not yet purchased' on their 13F filings and just asked, "How you sell $65B worth of something you don't even own?" Nobody answered so I just let them change the subject. I kind of felt like a crazy person. It seems average people still don't have a clue where our money is, comes from, goes, or how bad our financial markets & regulations really are. I hope they're prepared to find out. Not sure if I'll say anything next time the topic gets brought up.
