Ethan Crumbley carried out the shooting using a pistol his father had bought just days before, which he said was kept in an unsecured container at his home. Authorities said Crumbley’s parents were called to the school on the day of the shooting after a drawing of a gun was found on his desk along with the words, “The thoughts won’t stop, help me,” but the parents declined to check him out from school to receive counseling. A teacher also allegedly alerted Crumbley’s parents weeks before the shooting that he was looking up ammunition on his cell phone during class, but Jennifer Crumbley told her son in a text following the incident: “LOL. I’m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught.”

Couple of issues here:

I'm all for law abiding gun ownership. But when a parent fails to secure a firearm and their kid brings it to school, under PC 25100, that is treading very closely to "criminal storage of a firearm." The parent should be named and shamed at the very least. James & Jennifer Crumbley anyone?
Under PC 626.8 (California Gun-Free School Zone Act) bringing a gun on campus sets you up for a 2-5 year state prison charge. Where is the charge here?
The rest of us parents should not be left in the dark about this. For all we know the kid is back on campus and the parent still isn't securing their other firearms. What a clusterf*ck. Pretty hard to believe a gun was brandished on campus and we're only hearing about it two weeks later via the Tribune.

Edit: Updated to mention the principal resigned the day after this occurring.

2023.01.11 20:37 jms_mi A 6-year-old is accused of shooting someone at school. He isn’t the first.

From the article " In at least 11 cases, though, the person who pulled the trigger was no older than 10. In nine of those shootings, children brought the loaded guns from home. I live in Michigan, not too far from Oxford Schoo where a student shot and killed four students. The partents (Jennifer and James Crumbley) are charged for manslaughter for their role in facilitating their son having access to the gun. There are challenges (not insurmountable) for the prosecution to be successful. But I think such cases on similar facts are important and need to be brought. This is especially true given the Supreme Court's current interpretation of the 2A. Shifting the focus from regulation to accountability should have considerable impact on preventing what should be preventable gun deaths and injuries.

In May, the Port Huron police filed a harassment complaint against B.J, alleging he faked being transgender to get into a women's locker room to make threatening statements. He wore a "transwoman" T-shirt to the gym and asked a front desk employee which bathroom he could use. Then he became upset because he was "tired of this woke s---." No charges were filed.
In 2020, a bench warrant for his arrest was active for nearly six months over his failure to appear at a creditor's exam in Sanilac County Circuit Court.
In 2017, he unsuccessfully tried to get permission to use his home as a large-scale marijuana grow facility, acknowledging that he has been growing 72 pot plants on his property for a period of a year.
B.J. has expressed "extremist views" on Facebook, including "the virus is killing people left and write," "The Biden administration is trafficking children for sex and cheap labor" and "Ye said the Jews control the money so the IRS freezes his bank accounts."

Thoughts? I don’t think they should get bond regardless, as they already ran and hid from police once. They especially shouldn’t stay with this guy.
I also don’t doubt the right will use this against trans people somehow. Like a rightoid pretending to be trans is a reason to be anti-trans for some reason.

DETROIT (AP) — The Michigan Supreme Court on Tuesday postponed the January trial for the parents of the teenager who killed four students at his high school, a victory for defense lawyers who argue that involuntary manslaughter charges don’t fit.
The court ordered the state appeals court to hear an appeal from James and Jennifer Crumbley.
The order coincidentally emerged a day before the one-year anniversary of the shooting at Oxford High School, roughly 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Detroit. Ethan Crumbley, who was 15 at the time, killed four students and injured six more plus a teacher.
He recently pleaded guilty to murder and terrorism and said James Crumbley bought the gun with the boy’s money just a few days earlier.
The 16-year-old’s parents are accused of ignoring his mental health needs and making the gun accessible at home. Defense lawyers argue that the Crumbleys can’t be held criminally responsible for Ethan Crumbley’s independent acts.
The Supreme Court said the appeal is limited to whether there was “sufficient evidence of causation” to send the Crumbleys to trial.
Justice Richard Bernstein was the lone dissenter, saying that issue could be addressed after a trial. Jury selection in Oakland County court had been scheduled for Jan. 17.
“The Crumbleys did not counsel EC in the commission of the school shooting or act jointly with EC in any way,” attorney Shannon Smith said in a court filing, using Ethan Crumbley’s initials. “To the contrary, the Crumbleys had no knowledge that their son intended to commit multiple homicides
Defense lawyers and prosecutors, noting a gag order in the case, declined to comment on the Supreme Court order.

Jennifer and James Crumbleys trial is expected to start on January 17.
