Tell me something about the legacy of LL Cool J

2023.06.04 22:43 2020BillyJoel Tell me something about the legacy of LL Cool J

I have never managed to get into hip hop, I don't really know anything about the genre or related genres. For some reason I recently came across the name and thought I'd try it out. Listened to albums Radio and Mama Said Knock You Out and managed to enjoy them. But I have like zero context for them so I thought I'd ask around.
How is he generally thought of in retrospect? Is he respected? Did he pioneer or influence anything in particular? Or more casual/poppy? Or what?
Just tryin to learn a bit in an area I'm unfamiliar with.

2023.06.04 22:37 endlessfart42069 Lyrical referencing in pop

I was recently listening to Roses are Red by Aqua and noticed that it seems like they were referencing Iggy Pop's The Passenger with the line "I'm on a ride, on a ride, I'm a passenger."
It seems like such references are common in hip hop, and a sign of respect (as Lil Wayne explained in Dr. Carter!).
Pop music definitely uses musical interpolation and sampling (ie Charli XCX's You Used to Know Me using Robin S's Show Me Love), but I'm not coming up with a lot of examples of lyrical referencing. Curious about other examples that exist outside hip hop

2023.06.04 22:31 Fun_Cable8641 Cant seem to get into other genres of Music.

So I have been obsessed to Rap/HipHop for the past 2 or so years. I love the classics like OutKast and MF DOOM, and even the more recent and innovative artists like Playboi Carti, Yeat, Don Toliver. If it’s rap I listen to it regardless who it is, it’s also probably bc I’m fairly young (19)
I try to be so openminded when it comes to other genres, especially with Rock and R&B. I like slipknot and Frank Ocean but I always seem to be more interested into listening to and finding new rap music because the sounds makes me feel confident/high self esteem. It May be weird but it’s true. Was just wondering if anyone was the same way to where you mostly stick to only one genre, because I see that people say “if you listen to one genre you’re boring” but the thing is that i try all the time but nothings hits the same :(

Hi all - I am selling my beloved iPod since it hasn't seen much (any) use in the past few years. It's in pretty good condition (no scratches on screen or front, with some scuffing on the back) and I made sure it still turns on and plays music! Includes the case I've kept it in since buying and the USB/brick wall charger. Also includes the 19k+ songs I've loaded onto it if you want to relive my high school / college days :,) all meticulously tagged and with album art. Pretty much everything on here is either v0 quality sound or better, and are full albums. No random single songs or Limewire gutter quality on this baby. Only the finest audio that personal rips or waffles.fm could provide (that isnt lossless)!

I Made A Genuine Oldschool Hip-Hop Track - This Vibe Still Slap In 2023?
I know oldschool Hip-Hop isn't what's poppin these days, but every once in a while a feel like it's necessary to revisit the roots of the genre. Stories just hit different on boombap beats in my opinion, what's your take?

2023.06.04 22:07 balajih67 Veeran Review

Cast: Hip Hop Tamizha Adhi, athira raj, vinay rai and others
Director: ARK Saravan (Maragatha Naanayam fame)
Synopsis: Kumaran gets superpowers after being struck by lightning, and cosplays as the village deity Veeran to save it from a corporate scheme.
Details: Kumaran (HHT) gets struck by lightning on his way back from school. This gives the ability to produce electric arcs using his hands and control the mind of others.
He gets a dream that his village will be destroyed one day by the corporate company and sets off to save it.
In between, there is a very good comedy track written for and performed well by kaali venkat and munishkanth. HHT own comedy track with sassi and rest of the gang from “Nakkalites” youtube channel works well.
Then, is your usual corporate company buying off lands from the villagers for their project which would then have a chance to destroy the village. The village deity called “Veeran” is believed to save the villagers from the tragedy.
Kumaran uses this belief to cosplay as the deity and fights the villains using his superpowers to save the village.
Technicals: with the limited budget, vfx work is good. Songs decent. HHT Background score was good. Movie felt a tad too long at almost 156 minutes.
Performances: HHT fit the role, though i still feel the superhero action bit was a bit too much for him and he looked underwhelming in the action scenes. Vinay again typecasted into the typical tamil corporate villain and sleepwalks the character.
My take: the first half was genuinely good. The comic scenes, followed by intro of his superpowers was good. However the second half spoils it, remove veeran and insert any mass hero, movie would have still worked. He didnt really need to be a superhero to save the day.
The entire theater was laughing in the second half, and this was not at the comedy scenes. Followed by a loud cringe verdict at the end.
The movie had potential but let down by poor writing. The theme of this film is similar to boomerang (2019).
The second half was basically the old man yelling “Vaaya Veera” and HHT coming and fighting to save the day. Thats a mass hero film, not really a superhero film.
My review would be 3/5. Appreciate the concept and effort and VFX but wafer thin plot and story lets down the movie

2023.06.04 21:58 quegrawks MC Sha-Rock the "first female rapper" or emcee: the "Mother of the Mic"

MC Sha-Rock the
MC Sha-Rock, is the "first female rapper" or emcee. during the earliest years of hip hop culture. Within the hip-hop community she has been referred to as the "Mother of the Mic" signifying her role as a prominent female figure among the early rappers. As a member of the first hip-hop crew to appear on national television, known as the Funky 4 + 1, her style of delivering raps on early mixtapes influenced notable rappers like MC Lyte and DMC (born Darryl McDaniels) of Run-DMC. McDaniels cited Green as a significant influence on the style of rapping associated with the pioneering group. In her lyrics, Sha-Rock repeatedly referred to herself as the "Plus One More" of the Funky 4 + 1.
Sha-Rock is the first female emcee-rapper of hip hop culture "on wax" or record on vinyl from its inception in the 1970s. She began as a local b-girl, or breakdancer, in the earliest days of South Bronx hip hop scene and culture in the late 1970s. The Funky 4 + 1, Sha-Rock being the plus one, had their first significant hit with the 12-inch single "Rapping and Rocking the House" on Sugarhill Records (1979) as well as "That's the Joint" (1980) which both appeared on national television. As an early pioneer affiliated with the Zulu Nation, MC Sha-Rock inspired a style of rapping emulated and made notable by Run DMC called the "echo chamber".
Her contribution to the hip hop culture has helped pave the way for today's female hip hop artists. She helped set the tone for female emcees to become well known and established in the hip hop music industry. She wanted female emcees to be taken just as serious as male artists. She also accredited DJ Kool Herc for helping her on her journey to become the emcee she is today.
