"Introduction: The Warring States period resembles the Spring and Autumn period in many ways. The multi-state structure of the Chinese cultural sphere continued as before, and most of the major states of the earlier period continued to play key roles. Warfare, as the name of the period implies, continued to be endemic, and the historical chronicles continue to read as a bewildering list of armed conflicts and shifting alliances. In fact, however, the Warring States period was one of dramatic social and political changes.
Perhaps the most basic of these changes concerned the ways in which wars were fought. During the Spring and Autumn years, battles were conducted by small groups of chariot-driven patricians. Managing a two-wheeled vehicle over the often uncharted terrain of a battlefield while wielding bow and arrow or sword to deadly effect required years of training, and the number of men who were qualified to lead armies in this way was very limited. Each chariot was accompanied by a group of infantrymen, by rule seventy-two, but usually far fewer, probably closer to ten. Thus a large army in the field, with over a thousand chariots, might consist in total of ten or twenty thousand soldiers. With the population of the major states numbering several millions at this time, such a force could be raised with relative ease by the lords of such states.
During the Warring States period, the situation was very different. One reason why the armies of Wu and Yue had been so effective during the period 506-476 was that they did not employ chariot warfare. The uneven country of the south, split by rivers everywhere, made chariot warfare impractical, and Wu and Yue chose instead to raise massive armies of infantry. Infantry armies moved as rapidly as traditional ones – after all, the infantrymen that accompanied chariots limited the mobility of the whole – and they could be used much more flexibly than armies tied to chariot riding patricians. Horseback command, rather than chariot command, also gave patrician officers more freedom of movement.
The northern states learned the lessons of the period of Wu-Yue hegemony. The chariot was largely discarded, and instead of concentrating on the size and training of their elite officer corps, patrician lords cultivated huge armies of peasant infantrymen. Systems of taxation in state after state were reformulated so that the peasant’s payment to his lord no longer took the form of field labor, but was a direct payment in cash or in crops, resources that could sustain the lord’s household or be converted to funds necessary to raise and provision armies. In the course of this transition, the peasantry for the first time were viewed as, in some sense, possessing the lands upon which they paid tax. In some states they were even licensed to buy and sell land, the truest test of ownership in the modern sense.
The altered relationship between ruler and people is also reflected in the restructuring of administration which occurred in many states. The degree of change varied widely from state to state: among the major states, Chu was probably least touched by them, while Qin was unquestionably the most fundamentally transformed. The nature of the changes also differed among states, but there was a common thread. In virtually all cases, state administration was restructured so that lands and cities were divided into centrally designated units and control over these units was directly determined by the ruler and his close advisors, rather than becoming the hereditary prerogatives of patrician clans. Thus the peasants and city-dwelling commoners fell increasingly under the control of the ruler’s court, and the regional patrician clans more and more found themselves excluded from access to real power. Common merchant & Commercial Vessels
Broadly speaking, the non-military vessels of the sector are transports. Some only haul cargo, others only passengers, but most carry a mix of the two. All legitimate craft operate under an Imperial charter, granting them the right to fly lawfully between stars. Some charters allow only for travel along specific routes, while others allow for travel anywhere. Many charters date back thousands of years and it is a rare thing for a new charter to be granted. Most vessels operate in fleets, the better to protect each other from raiders (and rival merchants) as well as facilitate cargo loading and unloading.
As in most sectors, Chartist captains dominate the stars of Calixis. Operating without Navigators or Astropaths (luxuries normally affordable only to the military or planetary governments), they rely on carefully maintained star charts to make journeys from point to point. Some of these maps cover paths of relative safety for warp travel and must be followed precisely. This often means extremely circuitous routes, such that a linear path of tens of light years might entail dozens of jumps totalling hundreds of light years of travel. But for some systems, such a route is the only way possible. Often these planets may go generations without a visit if they are especially distant.
Bulk cargo transports
Of the Chartist ships, bulk cargo transports are the most numerous. In Calixis space, Greatholds are the largest, dwarfing all but gargantuan vessels such as Emperor-class battleships or unique monstrosities like the Misericord. Each Greathold can carry enough goods such that offloading takes dozens of months. Almost as large are the Excolati refinery ships which take this a step further and actively process raw materials during the trip, so products such as weapons-grade promethium are ready to deliver on arrival.
When one of these huge vessels arrives at a planet, it is an occasion noted all over the system. While the Misericord is infamous for the bad luck it brings, other arrivals are a cause of celebration and holidays as it means badly needed medicines and foodstuffs as well as new toys and diversions for the local rulers. As the saying goes, when the Governor is happy, everyone else eats better.
Transports
There is a limited demand for pure passenger ships, as most travellers make do with transport ship accommodations. For those who can afford it though, there are several options for connecting the more populous and powerful systems for the nobility and corporate lords. Pilgrim Ships are the more common type, dedicated to taking the faithful to and from planets of spiritual note or allowing them to retrace the steps of the favoured saints
Mixed passenger and cargo transports are the most common type to be found, primarily carrying one while also providing limited space for the other. Sizes range widely, but most are medium level crafts that can service most of the sector depending on their charter type. Short-range system Hoppers and Void Jumpers for example usually operate under low-level Hereditary Charters. They work short-range trading routes between nearby systems, normally only making one or two jumps to reach their destination. Smaller tramp freighters are also widespread, working without regular routes and barely surviving from one job to the next. For Imperial agents, especially those wishing a low profile, these types of ships can be a common means of transportation throughout Calixis.
Other Vessels
While not actual ships, most systems host a variety of other space-born facilities. These include orbiting centres such as planetary monitors and docks, beacon stations, emergency lifehouses and more. Some are as large as small moons and act as the major nexuses of commerce and shipping for a system, while others may be little more than a refitted cargo hold conducting research on the fringes of the system.
System Ships
System ships are just that: lacking warp engines they operate within the system using plasma drives alone. A civilized system might have hundreds working to move cargo and people throughout its space, while lower level planets may only have a handful to support larger transports on their arrival. Most captains look down on these vessels, but they are vital in systems with multiple inhabited planets or stations.
Limpet Boats are small craft carried onboard Greatholds or other gargantuan ships, and are designed to detach once the main craft has reached its destination. Limpets then scurry about transporting cargo, shuttling crew and passengers, and performing other necessary tasks to ensure that the parent ship will be ready for its next journey.
Shuttles and Lighters are another common craft, working only between their home planet and any orbiting vessels. When a new ship arrives to their planet, they blast into space vying for any work to be had. These boats are also useful for fast (but expensive) planetside transport as well.
And then there are the Rogue Traders. Each as eclectic and unique as their master, they can range from one vessel to many. Rogue Traders operate almost as a law unto themselves; with no boundaries except those proscribed in their charter, they roam the edges of the galaxy in search of new worlds to exploit
Catching a Ride
Unless you have access to a dedicated vehicle (perhaps your Inquisitor has a permanent arrangement with a Chartist captain, or even owns his own ship), you will need to manage your own travel arrangements. Most of the time this is a relatively straightforward affair as most planetary docks have procedures to arrange berths on passenger ships. Most transport captains are also willing to take on some passengers and indicate their destinations and rates at the docks as well. If you’re in need of transportation to a location not listed, though, or need arrangements outside the norm (such as expeditious speed, possibly illegal cargo or travel to forbidden worlds) then some serious negotiations will be needed. Having plenty of Thrones or bartering merchandise on your person can aid this process immeasurably.
Most Inquisitorial agents refrain from simply commandeering a vessel on the authority of their rosette, and save that as a last resort to be used only when regular means such as payment, bribery and subtle threats fail. Keeping the negotiations “sub-rosa” helps maintain good working relations with the merchant fleets and helps ensure that the next time you need a ride things go smoothly. It also helps keep them in business and available for you in future endeavours. Indeed, if you treat them well, most captains look forward to your repeat business, thus making life easier for all parties concerned.

Pasadena reported an increase in its homeless count for the first time since 2019, according to a report released on Thursday.
Volunteers counted 556 people experiencing homelessness, up from 512 people in last year’s count.
“While the exact number of people without homes on any given night fluctuates, 556 people were unhoused on the night of the 2023 Homeless Count, a 9% increase over 2022,” the city’s report read.
The City reported 527 unsheltered people in 2020 and 542 in 2019. There was no count in 2021 due to the pandemic.
First time homeless, seniors, veterans and LGBTQ+ groups saw the greatest increases in homelessness.
First time homeless people in Pasadena increased from 9% to 14% of the count, seniors made up 14% of the count last year, but now account for 18%. Veterans increased from 7% to 11% and 10% of the people counted identified as LGBTQ+, up from 10%.
The count is mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in order to receive annual federal Continuum of Care Program funding.
Last year the City permanently housed 310 people.
The count is typically taken during the last ten days of January.
The goal of the count is to produce a snapshot figure of how many people are homeless across Pasadena on a typical night.
Racial disparities continue to exist for unsheltered African Americans according to the report.
Thirty-percent of the people counted identified as Black or African American.
African Americans only make up about 8% of Pasadena’s general population.
However, the intersectionality of race and homelessness extends beyond the influence of poverty.
Just 10% of people living in poverty in Pasadena identify as African Americans.
Inequities persist across nearly all subpopulations. Black seniors and veterans have some of the greatest disparities, with Black people comprising 41% of both groups. In addition, disparities are more exaggerated among transitional-aged youth (ages 18-24), with Black youth comprising 39% of youth experiencing homelessness, according to the report.
Meanwhile, the percentage of unhoused people identified as Hispanic or Latino returned to pre-pandemic levels.
In the 2022 count, 44% were Hispanic or Latino. The percentage slightly decreased to 38% in 2023, which resembles the 2020 count of 37%.
The percentage is in line, but slightly higher than, the City’s census numbers which reported the demographic as 36% share of the city’s population.
The most significant disparities are observed among families experiencing homelessness, with 70% identifying as Hispanic or Latino, 44% of the people experiencing first-time homelessness, where 44% are Hispanic or Latino.
These disparities seem to underscore the need for targeted efforts to address the unique needs and barriers faced by Hispanic and Latino people experiencing homelessness in Pasadena.
The share of people experiencing first-time homelessness has not yet reached the pre-pandemic rate of 19%, with 14% being recorded in 2023 (compared to 9% in 2022).
“Factors contributing to housing loss were predominantly economic in nature,” the report said. “A total of 35% of people experiencing homelessness for the first time reported losing their job, while 24% experienced homelessness due to financial reasons, and another 24% experienced homelessness due to COVID-19-related factors. Eviction also played a significant role in people falling into homelessness, accounting for 24% of cases, compared to 17% in 2022.”
The rise in first-time homelessness highlights the ongoing challenges faced by communities in achieving stable housing that requires targeted support for vulnerable populations that encompass economic stability, affordable housing, and robust social support systems.”

Kindly support us in drawing attention would be the occasional fanfare that autocrats like to bestow upon themselves, such as photo-edited images of them riding a bear or long videos of entrancing an office with choreographed, unbelievably cheerful supporters. Powerful pictures, believed to have the potential to evoke awe in everyone with more than three brain cells.

Based on information from potentially biased European outlets (which everyone can look up themselves without me overstressing a particular source or placing potentially undeserved trust in them by channeling attention through sharing a link): Today's Russian society is trauma-ridden due to disturbingly high incidences of domestic violence. Exhibiting the llegal policy of having no law enforcement stepping in before a victim is beaten to death reflects roots in the often stressed infallible power potency confidence of Russia's upper echelon.
This beeing just the tip of the iceberg of the profound impact one man's multiplier factor had on Russian society: Its pack leader knows he will never be a beloved ruler. But for those willing to kiss sanity goodbye, glory has different masks to choose from:
He can never be the good guy, but he can be the bad guy.
What if Putin's motivation is neither concerning fascist pest control nor geopolitical disputes but much simpler? What if the sole motivation behind his actions is just this man wanting his name in the history books?
Be the name that unnecessarily stirred the world towards nuclear doom. A name spoken with the same breath as the worst human appearing specimens to have ever existed.
I think he overestimates his influence here. Guilt stacks up through consequences, and others had a much longer run. He's not going to be the top bloodhound even in that category. But it appears to me he wants to give the attempt to get close to what he's got.

Such motivation can seem impossible to those who don't want it to be true. It appears that if something is big, bad, cruel – straight up evil, people want a sane explanation. As though the truth of its origin being simple monkey instincts is too much to take. Instinctively, such truths get treated as even worse than the truly devastating consequence of ignoring reality. Thus, the thought gets pushed aside, and the danger denied. Most people prefer to discuss the almost reasonable-seeming facade of a territory dispute.
Why do I think it is a facade that does not hold up too well? While the one who gave the order to invade might have thought the war would be a successful conquest quite quickly, he must have at least foreseen the international attention and therefore inevitably rising tension. No one in their right mind wages war and provokes nuclear tension inevitably subsequently because of having their toe stepped on, which is what a state like Ukraine considering joining a union like NATO would be. After all, Ukraine never signed for a security guarantee providing military intervention from NATO before being invaded.
Leaving my attempt at reasoning with only two ways to explain this: The first would be that Russia's autocrat hasn't foreseen the turmoil, tensions, and the threat of nuclear arms. This would mean he has lost it to the degree of beeing unable to draw logical conclusions. I have not yet heard of an autocrat managing to uphold their position of influence plagued by end-state insanity.
Which leaves me with the only other explanation I could come up with: He has indeed foreseen the international rise in tension. Meaning, it is not about territory but about a personal ego boost through attention.
In this regard, right now, he's getting what he wants. While Russia's visible top probably thinks the destruction of a country looks nice on his CV, suited to apply for exchanging that bear for a white horse, it does not have to be a successful Ukraine assimilation.
Reasoning from this perspective, an even more rewarding long-term goal would be to become synonymous with destruction by steering the world toward nuclear doom.
I wouldn't mind being wrong here, but my premises lead me to this supposition.

Psychology appears to be a rather uncomfortable endeavor for many people. Approaching another person's reasoning can confront one with their own. A tendency of avoidance manifests, especially regarding topics that challenge one's reasoning of self-worth subsequently.
Nonetheless, it is fruitful to encourage acknowledging that power being tied tightly to superiority is an illusion. Everyone's brain core is still that of a monkey. But is it a comforting thought to be governed by animalistic behavior? The denial can ultimately lead to missing the point and being unable to deal with the aggressor.
One cannot defeat what is not understood and the only other role left to play is that of the victim, moaning their trauma without any hope of justice.

The current approach too often blames the entire Russian population without distinguishing between citizens and the government. In an autocratic regime, the population has little to no influence on the decision-making process leading to disaster. So, how precisely is it the average citizen's fault?
From the perspective of rational self-interest and raw survival instinct, anyone who worsens a person's situation is an aggressor. If one drastically worsens the material situation of an average person overnight by taking away their work opportunity, cutting down their lifestyle, and on top taking away their ability to trade freely, who is the aggressor?
How can a perceived aggressor expect support for a purpose? How can anyone have the nerve, time, energy, and money to support a virtuous intent while having to fend for themselves through the crisis that is bestowed upon them?
What other choice do Russians currently have but to be in conflict with the perceived aggressor instead of the intended-to-be-attacked regime?
Empathy takes thought to prosper into support. I respect people wanting to help Ukrainian citizens, but it is not enough to have good intentions. One's weapons must be capable of hitting the target.
Who wants to look back only to see all their efforts were nothing but pointless destruction? Absurdly enough, apparently no one.
No one would attempt to forge a sword using bombs as a substitute for charcoal either. So why attempt to bring down a regime by punishing the normal local population?

The middle class [>3l, 3u<] is the moral backbone of a society.
The less fortunate of a society [C0-2] often face hard decisions attempting to survive. This gives rise to morally questionable solution approaches. Meanwhile, the very fortunate [C4+] get constantly tempted, b ut they receive negligible ethical feedback on their actions. No means of retribution exist. Therefore, these individuals can derail into unspeakable acts of terror at a difficult-to-fathom high multiplier factor quickly.
"Erst kommt das Fressen, dann die Moral." (First comes eating, then morality). The middle class is fed, so now they have resources for morals. In tendency, middle-class individuals [ C3] also evaluate their instinctive drives more rationally than other classes. This is because in some places of the world, attempts at a justice system concerned with classes 1-3 exist. But more importantly, middle-class individuals constantly receive honest and in tendency constructive feedback on their actions through their peers and therefore are likely to build a strong moral matrix. Economic sanctions are an assassination attempt on sanity.
They are thoroughly ineffective in destabilizing an enemy's power structure. In actuality, sanctions are a death sentence for the middle class, casting doom upon morality in society.

Economic sanctions have never worked to bring down a regime, ever. [L2] Seriously, show me one example when they helped empathetic efforts.
In stark contrast, history provides vast examples of them destroying prosperity and, with it, social stability. Look at examples like Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Myanmar, and Germany. The list goes on and on and is way too long.
What's the point of summoning the miserable opposite of the proclaimed noble goal?
The rise of the German Nazi party leading to the Second World War should be enough of a warning. A large part of the German population was effectively manipulated through this argument: the reparations cost imposed on Germany after the First World War. What fueled the rise of fascist madness was the general population's desperation.
As work became difficult to find and the value of people's savings was crushed by hyperinflation, people were robbed of basic stability. Without the security of even being able to afford proper food and housing, they wanted strong leadership that would change this daily uncertainty into a prosperous future.
The fascists' visible visage promised financial stability, or in simpler terms which his followers preferred: work with salaries that could actually buy something. It led to propaganda projects like building highways, which didn't actually create many jobs or solutions for the underlying problems but were well-suited for photos propagating how the Nazi party creates employment and economic prosperity through infrastructure.
Fortunately, such propaganda doesn't doesnt hit everyone as hard as the wrong pills. Still, most people struggle to differentiate between >Schein< [what seems to be] and >Sein< [what is] through logical reasoning. Therfore in todays world as well, propaganda is effective enough.
Unfortunately, history has proven time and time again that enough people to wreak chaos in a democracy through their voting choice cannot differenciate between actual leadership qualities and populist propaganda.
The fascists were voted for. Those who voted against them were murdered. Rosa and Karl, personifications of empathy, intelligence, and bravery, drowned like people's will to honour sanity.
The consequence are our parents' and grandparents' Second World War traumas. They rippled into more trauma, negatively affecting generations to this day. The experiences channeling my path beeing just one examplae within uncountable storys of injustice.
Faced with significantly rising inflation precisely 100 years after the last hyperinflation in Germany ended, it is shameful for the German government to participate and contribute to this obvious road to destruction through economic sanctions burdening society.
