2023.05.28 16:39 Sparkletinkercat Lets all share our D&D stories and campaigns.
Its roughtly 1am and I decided this would be a good thing to do at 1am. And of course at 1am I am thinking.. I want to hear some stories about peoples experiences as a player or as a DM.
So lets start an 'ask me anything post train'. Basically when you ask your first question in this post about someone elses experience you should do the following:
- Introduce yourself
- Include a bit of information about the characters you have made/played or the campaigns you have been in.
- And the line 'Ask me anything' or 'AMA'.
You only need to do this once. Then you can ask as many questions as you want.
And that way everyone can have some cool stories to read, fun ideas for characters or even campaigns.
So as the post creator I shall start:
A bit about me: Hello I am Sparkle and I am a professional DM who is trying to become a better DM than Matt Mercer (which is a really high benchmark, he's a really good DM). I like drawing art and making animated maps for D&D.
I am currently playing in six D&D campaigns a week. And I am dming 3 of them. The highest amount of players I have DMed for at once was around 15 and the longest I have dmed for at once is 11 hours.
These are the six campaigns I am in currently.
Astral Antics: As a DM (My fav campaign to DM) This campaign is a homebrew campaign which is focused on portals, gods and ancient magic (Blood magic, Ethereal Magic, and the Zenith) The whole group has custom classes and races which may be an interesting discussion for some. They are currently infiltrating the vampires kings, aka Venerzar Dunbars, castle (who happens to be one of the players father) and Ketsu has just discovered a card from the deck of many things. (Its not the first card to have been found)
Endless Vernandia and Endless Vernandia Tarvea: As a DM
This group is my largest group. Their campaign is split into two sections currently.
Endless Vernandia (EV) was based in a spirit world after the players died in their own worlds. They learnt to survive in the wilderness, build bases and just sorta mess around. The group has an interest in door hinges (don't get me started on this), one of the players was accidently turned into a lich (even I am not sure how this happened). We also had a merchant who stole everyones hearts, no wait that was Granny num nums... (My players never forgave me for killing her off). And eventually they got reincarnated into a new world. Oh and lets not forget this worlds gimmick of corruption.
EV Tarvea: The group now has new characters (reminiscent of the old) and spirit animals. (Bonus points if anyone can figure out the series this world is based off). The characters are busy solving mysteries whilst trying to avoid the corruption they have discovered is seaping into this world from Vernandia.
The Multitude of Magnus: As a DM This one on one campaign is set in a world where the player Magnus has been besett with a strange illness. He also happens to be a prince. Starting as a skeleton he wakes up finding the world no longer accepts him. He makes a tonne of friends as he time travels through the past versing an ancient black drahon called Neskur who keeps killing his family who he left behind. Eventually he manages to escape the time loop he is in and ends up in Magnus the 1sts body. He also discovers along the way a missing soul god and an enemy called Vane.
The Ruins of Senpitrial. As a player This campaign has been going on for quite a while now and its my favourite campaign as a player. In this campaign there is a lich called Ur Kad who is attempting to cause another ruining, there is also a god called the lord of blood who myself, Fane and Kat are aiming to kill. In this campaign I am playing a 'human' wizard detective called Liburua Batekin who fully believes he is a human. Except his disguise self spell is a bit weird, now that you mention it. He eventually meets a god called Grey Jacket (god of change) whos true name is unknown and eventually learns about his true nature. He is in fact a changling, who is honestly a bit weird for a changling as the only other two changlings he has met have mentioned it. Currently we are in the under dark trying to find Fanes family.
Chaos Corner: As a player. We have only just started yesterday and I am playing a very interesting character with super low stats. I cannot say more as I know some of the campaign members frequent reddit but I will happily tell anyone in direct messages about the character.
Generals Campaign: As a player General is a new DM and hes running a mostly combat campaign as we try to stop an evil king from bringing back a pretty evil god. I am playing a Revenant Asimar Mystic/Phoenix Sorcerer who died in one of the kings attacks on the town. Tempest one of the players in the party killed me as I killed him bring us both back as Revenents looking for revenge on each other. He is hiding his looks and eventually decided he wanted revenge on the king for sending him to his doom as I hunt him down. Except we are both immortal undead. Yea this is going to be a blast later on
Campaigns that have finished, so I am no longer in them.
Not all campaigns go well, and thats ok. Here are two that didnt work.
(Fake name) Jhins campaign: We were playing a group looking for some magic items. Jhin despite being a very new dm is very good at characters... At combat not so much. The main reason the campaign failed was due to restricting player abilities and just sort of giving up. The group was VERY chaotic and I mean very. In this campaign I played a Raven and a Kalashtar called Harbringer and Watcher. Their classes were rogue/Raven Queen Warlock. Basically Watcher is super nice, Harbringer is evil. Watcher shows himself to the party and Harbringer never really does. These two have a tonne of lore and are pretty fun to play.
After Jhin gave up I tried taking the group on. Yea even I failed. Basically the new game was about two dimensions, one called the mirror world where players played characters the other players designed (they didnt know their stats) and then you had the material where it was normal dnd. Anyway there were wizards on dragons and the group didnt get anywhere through the story anywhere fast. They spent a session talking about things outside of the game (they were all friends) and after a few more sessions after a talk to see if they would improve I dropped the campaign.
However we have some that did work, except people got too busy.
The Chaos Crew as a DM This campaign lasted ages and its the campaign that truely got me into dming. One day my friends told me when we were playing another game that they were trying to learn how to play dnd but didnt know where to start. Nobody had played before. I said I could try dming for them. They agreed and we promptly began a campaign. The campaign was a time travel campaign where the party slowly ran out of time to stop neskur from taking over their minds. And yes this is the origin of the infamous villian Neskur. And Senshin his nice brother. The group had a lot of fun as they stole a hippogriff egg, Yasuo killed the entire party in an epic betrayal (pvp was commonplace, fun and normal). Tbanger died 7x, sometimes on purpose, other times not so much. P.S: you still hold the record. The players also came up with the pelvis ghost..... Trust me you do not want to steal any pelvises in my games, it never ends up well. And the players drew the fates card and got revenge on Yasuo. Then we had exams and never played another game together. Currently I might be trying to gather them up for a reunion.
And last but not least... The original campaign. Based on the Taldora books (the one with the belt and 7 gems), we had a game where the terrifie were first introduced. A player died in session one after jumping purposely off a 30ft tall wall and getting poked with a stick. We had a sword incident where it glanced off a wall and impaled a dwarf (who rolled a nat 1) and an epic battle over a river. Five or so sessions in we had scheduling issues and didnt play again. However one of the three from the campaign later joined Astral Antics and Endless Vernandia. I kind of got them addicted to D&D... they thanked me for it lol.
And anyway that is it in terms of my campaigns. So......
AMA: Ask me anything, even specific questions like why my players are scared of birds or even about bagpipes. I will attempt to answer them all. Though I would love to see some questions that may led to some interesting tales. Go wild.
DMs I am happy to share any of my resources I have created for my campaigns if anyone wants them.

u/lunarknight22 - Once again welcome to the sub ❤️ thanks for thinking of me and sending that lovely card. The gold accents on the birds are stunning. Thanks again!
u/primaryloon - Thanks for the lovely postcard! The first few days were totally rough, I do not do well with change in my life, so it was a little meh. 5/1
u/birdiebennett x2 - Hey there lovely human ❤️ thanks for the card and the extra blank postcard ❤️ I love getting items to send to others ❤️ I am too a homebody, but I do enjoy being outside with a cup of coffee and my doggos, I have settled in well (or so i think), but still getting used to stuff. Thanks again for the lovely mail.
u/chibi_haiku - I love love love your handwriting !! its lovely, neat, and small!! Thanks for the lovely ice cream postcard 😄 its been not too hot, so I am happy to keep it cool for longer 😄 my backyard is looking cozier nowadays, so Ill enjoy it for you ❤️
u/unseenbowl - OH MY GOD..... I FREAKING LOOOOOOOOVEEEEEE THIS CARD! Thanks so much for picking such a lovely card for me! I do enjoy my backyard, lately I have been trying to grow some seeds, but I am known to kill plants 😦 so far my 2 little peppers I had at my previous place made it, they suffered but they are recovering nicely one is almost like ghost pepper and the other one is NuMex Suave Orange 😄 they are starting to show little flowers, so I am excited for that. Thanks again!
5/3
u/56Thorns - hey sweetie! Thanks so much for the card 😄 it is super cool! Are you coming for the pizza party? The koala you sent seems to be ready for it! Thanks for the wonderful wishes ❤️
u/KimKimMRW - I LOVED THE POSTCARD! I agree, it may feel a little creepy, but I loved it 😄 thanks for the wishes and love sent my way ❤️
u/VivereMomento - Thanks so so so much for the lovely letter, it was awesome to read about your goth wall of curiosities. I love goth architecture, so yay! 😄 Also, I am so happy you feel like you can do that now on your own place 🙂 . Your room sounds amazing to be honest, we have pitch back curtains, bedding and the furniture, but the walls are still white. Ill take my time to figure that out, this is an older home, so Ill see what needs to be done first. Thanks for the lovely advice, there are a bunch of Facebook Groups for the community where we give away things, and check for events. I am not sure of being part of the board or neighbors thingy. I don't even know if there's one to be honest, is a neighborhood mostly directed to live harmoniously and happily. Anywho, I loved your letter ❤️ thanks again!
5/5
u/BlacksmithEquivalent - I love seeing mail from you! I loved all the wishes and message you sent in that lovely card 😄 I must agree, it feels nice to just go and come as you please and have a space that's your own ❤️ thanks again for sending love my way!
u/omggallout - I loved that you shared with me TV shows that are fun and entertaining. I wish I could do extreme couponing like the show, but it is so hard to find coupons for me, and this area is even harder (more money wise/another income type bracket from where I lived before). I agree with you, If I ever did that, I wouldn't just keep it for myself, I would share and donate, and keep one or two things as back ups. Thanks for writing to me ❤️ I don't mind AT ALL about what you talked about, it gets pretty lonely here, so I enjoyed reading you ❤️
5/8
u/shipping_addict - Hi there! Thanks for your postcard 😄 I will be sure to look up the plant 😄 it seems like they last. Are they strong/resistant? I tend to kill plants, LMAO. Take care
u/Monetmonkey - Hi lovely one ❤️ I did find all my supplies finally! And i finally had a chance to sit down and read all the lovely mail and respond properly 😄 so here I am 😄 thanks for the stickers and washi tape 😄 I loved it all, and thanks so much for thinking of me and sending me sweet wishes and a beautiful card ❤️
5/15
u/CanaMeow x3 - Dear Lovely Cana, I have always been grateful for you ❤️ you always come to my rescue when I do not post the right thing/username. I enjoyed your mail so so much! Thanks for sharing with me your recent trip, the things you loved doing, and things you ate ❤️ I loved reading everything about you, I hope you know I enjoyed every bit of it. Your postcards are so lovely! I am definitely a cat person 😄 teehee 😄 so yes! Write more whenever you want! I wish I had a return address for you, to send you some mail, but I understand if you dont want to share it. Thanks for the love, the postcards, the stickers ❤️ they are all lovely!
5/20
u/GizmoDOS x2 - Thanks so much for the bookmark, your card, the note card, and the stickers! Thank you for the reminder to take a time to listen to my birds, I have many now, there are around 7 crows, 4 blue jays, and like 6 cardinals, there's other ones that I do not know the names, but I know they made a nest by my backyard door 😄 thanks for writing to me ❤️
u/rosiealeo1 x2 - aren't you the loveliest? OMG I loved your photo, the postcard, and the stamps 😄 thanks so much for picking that one for me ❤️ I love gothic architecture, so you nailed this one ❤️ I'll come over to jump in the pool with you, our community pool is a little too expensive teehee. Take care ❤️
As always, remember to stay awesome!
Love you all, and thanks for thinking of me ❤️ this made my months!
ok byeee ❤️

2023.05.28 07:32 PassTheDonutsPlease [TOMT] Tweet (?) about Ravens
I think I recently read or heard something (on Twitter?) about how ravens (or crows?) will sometime stand in a field with an open space in the middle of the flock, and one bird stands in the middle to…make a case for itself? Like it’s on trial? If it doesn’t convince the others that it’s…innocent?…the other birds attack it or something.
I can’t remember where I saw it and it’s driving me nuts! Does anyone know what I’m talking about?!?

2023.05.28 05:42 JoshAsdvgi Story of two friends
STORY OF THE TWO YOUNG FRIENDS
There were once in a very large Indian camp two little boys who were fast friends.
One of the boys, "Chaske" (meaning first born), was the son of a very rich family, and was always dressed in the finest of clothes of Indian costume.
The other boy, "Hake" (meaning last born), was an orphan and lived with his old grandmother, who was very destitute, and consequently could not dress the boy in fine raiment.
So poorly was the boy dressed that the boys who had good clothes always tormented him and would not play in his company.
Chaske did not look at the clothes of any boy whom he chose as a friend, but mingled with all boys regardless of how they were clad, and would study their dispositions.
The well dressed he found were vain and conceited.
The fairly well dressed he found selfish and spiteful.
The poorly clad he found to be generous and truthful, and from all of them he chose "Hake" for his "Koda" (friend).
As Chaske was the son of the leading war chief he was very much sought after by the rest of the boys, each one trying to gain the honor of being chosen for the friend and companion of the great chief's son; but, as I have before said, Chaske carefully studied them all and finally chose the orphan Hake.
It was a lucky day for Hake when he was chosen for the friend and companion of Chaske. The orphan boy was taken to the lodge of his friend's parents and dressed up in fine clothes and moccasins.
(When the Indians' sons claim any one as their friend, the friend thus chosen is adopted into the family as their own son).
Chaske and Hake were inseparable.
Where one was seen the other was not far distant.
They played, hunted, trapped, ate and slept together.
They would spend most of the long summer days hunting in the forests.
Time went on and these two fast friends grew up to be fine specimens of their tribe.
When they became the age to select a sweetheart they would go together and make love to a girl.
Each helping the other to win the affection of the one of his choice.
Chaske loved a girl who was the daughter of an old medicine man.
She was very much courted by the other young men of the tribe, and many a horse loaded with robes and fine porcupine work was tied at the medicine man's tepee in offering for the hand of his daughter, but the horses, laden as when tied there, were turned loose, signifying that the offer was not accepted.
The girl's choice was Chaske's friend Hake.
Although he had never made love to her for himself, he had always used honeyed words to her and was always loud in his praises for his friend Chaske.
One night the two friends had been to see the girl, and on their return Chaske was very quiet, having nothing to say and seemingly in deep study.
Always of a bright, jolly and amiable disposition, his silence and moody spell grieved his friend very much, and he finally spoke to Chaske, saying:
"Koda, what has come over you?
You who were always so jolly and full of fun?
Your silence makes me grieve for you and I do not know what you are feeling so downhearted about.
Has the girl said anything to you to make you feel thus?"
"Wait, friend," said Chaske, "until morning, and then I will know how to answer your inquiry. Don't ask me anything more tonight, as my heart is having a great battle with my brain."
Hake bothered his friend no more that night, but he could not sleep.
He kept wondering what "Pretty Feather" (the girl whom his friend loved) could have said to Chaske to bring such a change over him.
Hake never suspected that he himself was the cause of his friend's sorrow, for never did he have a thought that it was himself that Pretty Feather loved.
The next morning after they had eaten breakfast, Chaske proposed that they should go out on the prairies, and see if they would have the good luck to kill an antelope.
Hake went out and got the band of horses, of which there were over a hundred.
They selected the fleetest two in the herd, and taking their bows and arrows, mounted and rode away towards the south.
Hake was overjoyed to note the change in his friend. His oldtime jollity had returned.
They rode out about five miles, and scaring up a drove of antelope they started in hot pursuit, and as their horses were very fleet of foot soon caught up to the drove, and each singling out his choice quickly dispatched him with an arrow.
They could easily have killed more of the antelope, but did not want to kill them just for sport, but for food, and knowing that they had now all that their horses could pack home, they dismounted and proceeded to dress their kill.
After each had finished packing the kill on his horse, Chaske said:
"Let us sit down and have a smoke before we start back.
Besides, I have something to tell you which I can tell better sitting still than I can riding along."
Hake came and sat down opposite his friend, and while they smoked Chaske said:
"My friend, we have been together for the last twenty years and I have yet the first time to deceive you in any way, and I know I can truthfully say the same of you.
Never have I known you to deceive me nor tell me an untruth.
I have no brothers or sisters.
The only brother's love I know is yours.
The only sister's love I will know will be Pretty Feather's, for brother, last night she told me she loved none but you and would marry you and you only.
So, brother, I am going to take my antelope to my sister-in-law's tent and deposit it at her door.
Then she will know that her wish will be fulfilled.
I thought at first that you had been playing traitor to me and had been making love to her for yourself, but when she explained it all to me and begged me to intercede for her to you, I then knew that I had judged you wrongfully, and that, together with my lost love, made me so quiet and sorrowful last night.
So now, brother, take the flower of the nation for your wife, and I will be content to continue through life a lonely bachelor, as never again can I give any woman the place which Pretty Feather had in my heart."
Their pipes being smoked out they mounted their ponies and Chaske started up in a clear, deep voice the beautiful love song of Pretty Feather and his friend Hake.
Such is the love between two friends, who claim to be as brothers among the Indians. Chaske gave up his love of a beautiful woman for a man who was in fact no relation to him.
Hake said, "I will do as you say, my friend, but before I can marry the medicine man's daughter, I will have to go on the warpath and do some brave deed, and will start in ten days."
They rode towards home, planning which direction they would travel, and as it was to be their first experience on the warpath, they would seek advice from the old warriors of the tribe.
On their arrival at the village Hake took his kill to their own tent, while Chaske took his to the tent of the Medicine Man, and deposited it at the door and rode off towards home.
The mother of Pretty Feather did not know whether to take the offering or not, but Pretty Feather, seeing by this offering that her most cherished wish was to be granted, told her mother to take the meat and cook it and invite the old women of the camp to a feast in honor of the son-in-law who was soon to keep them furnished with plenty of meat.
Hake and his friend sought out all of the old warriors and gained all the information they desired.
Every evening Hake visited his intended wife and many happy evenings they spent together.
The morning of the tenth day the two friends left the village and turned their faces toward the west where the camps of the enemy are more numerous than in any other direction. They were not mounted and therefore traveled slowly, so it took about ten days of walking before they saw any signs of the enemy.
The old warriors had told them of a thickly wooded creek within the enemies' bounds.
The old men said, "That creek looks the ideal place to camp, but don't camp there by any means, because there is a ghost who haunts that creek, and any one who camps there is disturbed all through the night, and besides they never return, because the ghost is Wakan (holy), and the enemies conquer the travelers every time."
The friends had extra moccasins with them and one extra blanket, as it was late in the fall and the nights were very cold.
They broke camp early one morning and walked all day.
Along towards evening, the clouds which had been threatening all day, hurriedly opened their doors and down came the snowflakes thick and fast.
Just before it started snowing the friends had noticed a dark line about two miles in advance of them.
Chaske spoke to his friend and said: "If this storm continues we will be obliged to stay overnight at Ghost Creek, as I noticed it not far ahead of us, just before the storm set in."
"I noticed it also," said Hake. "We might as well entertain a ghost all night as to lie out on these open prairies and freeze to death."
So they decided to run the risk and stay in the sheltering woods of Ghost Creek.
When they got to the creek it seemed as if they had stepped inside a big tepee, so thick was the brush and timber that the wind could not be felt at all.
They hunted and found a place where the brush was very thick and the grass very tall.
They quickly pulled the tops of the nearest willows together and by intertwining the ends made them fast, and throwing their tent robe over this, soon had a cosy tepee in which to sleep.
They started their fire and cooked some dried buffalo meat and buffalo tallow, and were just about to eat their supper when a figure of a man came slowly in through the door and sat down near where he had entered.
Hake, being the one who was doing the cooking, poured out some tea into his own cup, and putting a piece of pounded meat and marrow into a small plate, placed it before the stranger, saying: "Eat, my friend, we are on the warpath and do not carry much of a variety of food with us, but I give you the best we have."
The stranger drew the plate towards him, and commenced eating ravenously.
He soon finished his meal and handed the dish and cup back.
He had not uttered a word so far.
Chaske filled the pipe and handed it to him.
He smoked for a few minutes, took one last draw from the pipe and handed it back to Chaske, and then he said: "Now, my friends, I am not a living man, but the wandering spirit of a once great warrior, who was killed in these woods by the enemy whom you two brave young men are now seeking to make war upon.
For years I have been roaming these woods in hopes that I might find some one brave enough to stop and listen to me, but all who have camped here in the past have run away at my approach or fired guns or shot arrows at me.
For such cowards as these I have always found a grave.
They never returned to their homes.
Now I have found two brave men whom I can tell what I want done, and if you accomplish what I tell you to do, you will return home with many horses and some scalps dangling from your belts.
Just over this range of hills north of us, a large village is encamped for the winter.
In that camp is the man who laid in ambush and shot me, killing me before I could get a chance to defend myself.
I want that man's scalp, because he has been the cause of my wanderings for a great many years.
Had he killed me on the battlefield my spirit would have at once joined my brothers in the happy hunting grounds, but being killed by a coward, my spirit is doomed to roam until I can find some brave man who will kill this coward and bring me his scalp.
This is why I have tried every party who have camped here to listen to me, but as I have said before, they were all cowards.
Now, I ask you two brave young men, will you do this for me?"
"We will," said the friends in one voice.
"Thank you, my boys. Now, I know why you came here, and that one of you came to earn his feathers by killing an enemy, before he would marry; the girl he is to marry is my granddaughter, as I am the father of the great Medicine Man.
In the morning there will pass by in plain sight of here a large party.
They will chase the buffalo over on that flat.
After they have passed an old man leading a black horse and riding a white one will come by on the trail left by the hunting party.
He will be driving about a hundred horses, which he will leave over in the next ravine.
He will then proceed to the hunting grounds and get meat from the different hunters.
After the hunters have all gone home he will come last, singing the praises of the ones who gave him the meat.
This man you must kill and scalp, as he is the one I want killed.
Then take the white and black horse and each mount and go to the hunting grounds.
There you will see two of the enemy riding about picking up empty shells.
Kill and scalp these two and each take a scalp and come over to the high knoll and I will show you where the horses are, and as soon as you hand me the old man's scalp I will disappear and you will see me no more.
As soon as I disappear, it will start in snowing.
Don't be afraid as the snow will cover your trail, but nevertheless, don't stop traveling for three days and nights, as these people will suspect that some of your tribe have done this, and they will follow you until you cross your own boundary lines."
When morning came, the two friends sat in the thick brush and watched a large party pass by their hiding place.
So near were they that the friends could hear them laughing and talking.
After the hunting party had passed, as the spirit had told them, along came the old man, driving a large band of horses and leading a fine looking coal black horse.
The horse the old man was riding was as white as snow.
The friends crawled to a little brush covered hill and watched the chase after the shooting had ceased.
The friends knew it would not be long before the return of the party, so they crawled back to their camp and hurriedly ate some pounded meat and drank some cherry tea.
Then they took down their robe and rolled it up and got everything in readiness for a hurried flight with the horses.
Scarcely had they got everything in readiness when the party came by, singing their song of the chase.
When they had all gone the friends crawled down to the trail and lay waiting for the old man.
Soon they heard him singing.
Nearer and nearer came the sounds of the song until at last at a bend in the road, the old man came into view.
The two friends arose and advanced to meet him.
On he came still singing.
No doubt he mistook them for some of his own people.
When he was very close to them they each stepped to either side of him and before he could make an outcry they pierced his cowardly old heart with two arrows.
He had hardly touched the ground when they both struck him with their bows, winning first and second honors by striking an enemy after he has fallen.
Chaske having won first honors, asked his friend to perform the scalping deed, which he did. And wanting to be sure that the spirit would get full revenge, took the whole scalp, ears and all, and tied it to his belt.
The buffalo beef which the old man had packed upon the black horse, they threw on the top of the old man.
Quickly mounting the two horses, they hastened out across the long flat towards the hunting grounds.
When they came in sight of the grounds there they saw two men riding about from place to place.
Chaske took after the one on the right, Hake the one on the left.
When the two men saw these two strange men riding like the wind towards them, they turned their horses to retreat towards the hills, but the white and the black were the swiftest of the tribe's horses, and quickly overtook the two fleeing men.
When they came close to the enemy they strung their arrows onto the bowstring and drove them through the two fleeing hunters.
As they were falling they tried to shoot, but being greatly exhausted, their bullets whistled harmlessly over the heads of the two friends.
They scalped the two enemies and took their guns and ammunition, also secured the two horses and started for the high knoll.
When they arrived at the place, there stood the spirit.
Hake presented him with the old man's scalp and then the spirit showed them the large band of horses, and saying, "Ride hard and long," disappeared and was seen no more by any war parties, as he was thus enabled to join his forefathers in the happy hunting grounds.
The friends did as the spirit had told them.
For three days and three nights they rode steadily.
On the fourth morning they came into their own boundary.
From there on they rode more slowly, and let the band of horses rest and crop the tops of long grass.
They would stop occasionally, and while one slept the other kept watch.
Thus they got fairly well rested before they came in sight of where their camp had stood when they had left.
All that they could see of the once large village was the lone tent of the great Medicine Man.
They rode up on to a high hill and farther on towards the east they saw smoke from a great many tepees.
They then knew that something had happened and that the village had moved away.
"My friend," said Chaske, "I am afraid something has happened to the Medicine Man's lodge, and rather than have you go there, I will go alone and you follow the trail of our party and go on ahead with the horses.
I will take the black and the white horses with me and I will follow on later, after I have seen what the trouble is."
"Very well, my friend, I will do as you say, but I am afraid something has happened to Pretty Feather."
Hake started on with the horses, driving them along the broad trail left by the hundreds of travois.
Chaske made slowly towards the tepee, and stopping outside, stood and listened.
Not a sound could he hear.
The only living thing he saw was Pretty Feather's spotted horse tied to the side of the tent. Then he knew that she must be dead.
He rode off into the thick brush and tied his two horses securely.
Then he came back and entered the tepee.
There on a bed of robes lay some one apparently dead.
The body was wrapped in blankets and robes and bound around and around with parfleche ropes.
These he carefully untied and unwound.
Then he unwrapped the robes and blankets and when he uncovered the face, he saw, as he had expected to, the face of his lost love, Pretty Feather.
As he sat gazing on her beautiful young face, his heart ached for his poor friend.
He himself had loved and lost this beautiful maiden, and now his friend who had won her would have to suffer the untold grief which he had suffered.
What was that? Could it have been a slight quivering of the nostrils that he had seen, or was it mad fancy playing a trick on him?
Closer he drew to her face, watching intently for another sign.
There it was again, only this time it was a long, deep drawn breath.
He arose, got some water and taking a small stick slowly forced open her mouth and poured some into it.
Then he took some sage, dipped it into the water and sprinkled a little on her head and face. There were many parfleche bags piled around the tepee, and thinking he might find some kind of medicine roots which he could use to revive her he started opening them one after the other.
He had opened three and was just opening the fourth, when a voice behind him asked: "What are you looking for?"
Turning quickly, he saw Pretty Feather looking at him.
Overjoyed, he cried, "What can I do so that you can get up and ride to the village with me? My friend and I just returned with a large band of horses and two scalps.
We saw this tent and recognized it.
My friend wanted to come, but I would not let him, as I feared if he found anything had happened to you he would do harm to himself, but now he will be anxious for my return, so if you will tell me what you need in order to revive you, I will get it, and we can then go to my friend in the village."
"At the foot of my bed you will find a piece of eagle fat.
Build a fire and melt it for me.
I will drink it and then we can go."
Chaske quickly started a fire, got out the piece of fat and melted it.
She drank it at one draught, and was about to arise when she suddenly said: "Roll me up quick and take the buffalo hair rope and tie it about my spotted horse's neck; tie his tail in a knot and tie him to the door.
Then run and hide behind the trees.
There are two of the enemy coming this way."
Chaske hurriedly obeyed her orders, and had barely concealed himself behind the trees, when there came into view two of the enemy.
They saw the horse tied to the door of the deserted tent, and knew that some dead person occupied the tepee, so through respect for the dead, they turned out and started to go through the brush and trees, so as not to pass the door.
(The Indians consider it a bad omen to pass by the door of a tepee occupied by a dead body, that is, while in the enemy's country).
So by making this detour they traveled directly towards where Chaske was concealed behind the tree.
Knowing that he would be discovered, and there being two of them, he knew the only chance he had was for him to kill one of them before they discovered him, then he stood a better chance at an even combat.
On they came, little thinking that one of them would in a few minutes be with his forefathers.
Chaske noiselessly slipped a cartridge into the chamber of his gun, threw it into action and took deliberate aim at the smaller one's breast.
A loud report rang out and the one he had aimed at threw up his arms and fell heavily forward, shot through the heart.
Reloading quickly Chaske stepped out from behind the tree.
He could easily have killed the other from his concealed position, but, being a brave young man, he wanted to give his opponent a fair chance.
The other had unslung his gun and a duel was then fought between the two lone combatants.
They would spring from side to side like two great cats.
Then advance one or two steps and fire.
Retreat a few steps, spring to one side and fire again.
The bullets whistled past their heads, tore up the earth beneath their feet, and occasionally one would hit its mark, only to cause a flesh wound.
Suddenly the enemy aimed his gun and threw it upon the ground.
His ammunition was exhausted, and slowly folding his arms he stood facing his opponent, with a fearless smile upon his face, expecting the next moment to fall dead from a bullet from the rifle of Chaske.
Not so.
Chaske was too honorable and noble to kill an unarmed man, and especially one who had put up such a brave fight as had this man.
Chaske advanced and picked up the empty gun.
The Toka (enemy) drew from a scabbard at his belt a long bowie knife, and taking it by the point handed it, handle first, to Chaske.
This signified surrender.
Chaske scalped the dead Toka and motioned for his prisoner to follow him.
In the meantime Pretty Feather had gotten up and stood looking at the duel.
When she heard the first shot she jumped up and cut a small slit in the tent from which she saw the whole proceedings.
Knowing that one or both of them must be wounded, she hurriedly got water and medicine roots, and when they came to the tent she was prepared to dress their wounds.
Chaske had a bullet through his shoulder and one through his hand.
They were very painful but not dangerous.
The prisoner had a bullet through his leg, also one through the muscle of his left arm.
Pretty Feather washed and dressed their wounds, and Chaske went and brought the black and white horses and mounting Pretty Feather upon the white horse, and the prisoner on her spotted one, the three soon rode into the village, and there was a great cry of joy when it was known that Pretty Feather had come back to them again.
Hake, who was in his tent grieving, was told that his friend had returned and with him Pretty Feather.
Hearing this good news he at once went to the Medicine Man's tent and found the Medicine Man busily dressing the wounds of his friend and a stranger.
The old Medicine Man turned to Hake and said:
"Son-in-law, take your wife home with you.
It was from grief at your absence that she went into a trance, and we, thinking she was dead, left her for such.
Hadn't it been for your friend here, she would surely have been a corpse now.
So take her and keep her with you always, and take as a present from me fifty of my best horses."
Hake and his beautiful bride went home, where his adopted mother had a fine large tent put up for them.
Presents of cooking utensils, horses, robes and finely worked shawls and moccasins came from every direction, and last of all Chaske gave as a present to his friend the Toka man whom he had taken as prisoner.
On presenting him with this gift, Chaske spoke thus:
"My friend, I present to you, that you may have him as a servant to look after your large band of horses, this man with whom I fought a two hours' duel, and had his ammunition lasted he would probably have conquered me, and who gave me the second hardest fight of my life.
The hardest fight of my life was when I gave up Pretty Feather.
You have them both.
To the Toka (enemy) be kind, and he will do all your biddings.
To Pretty Feather be a good husband."
So saying, Chaske left them, and true to his word,
lived the remainder of his days a confirmed bachelor.

2023.05.28 05:36 JoshAsdvgi STORY OF THE MINK
| STORY OF THE MINK (BORN-TO-BE-IN-THE-SUN) Tum-Tum had been digging for clams in the sand and catching baby crabs in the pools of water left by the outgoing tide. He was tired and was making his way to one of the whale canoes along the beach to lie down and rest. A long shadow from a high mountain in the west which would cool the afternoon air. Lying down on a bear-skin blanket he soon was on his way to slumber land where his ancestors dwelt. Tum-Tum then heard someone approaching singing a song to the rhythm of their paddle. "Oh my paddle steer me to shore As the times you have done before I seek "Born-To-Be-In-The-Sun" My boy, my boy, my only one." He peeped from the bow of the canoe and spied a woman as she stepped on the beach and came toward where he was hiding. As she approached Tum-Tum asked who she was, and where she came from. "My name is Nice-to-look-at. I am from Pleasant-places-in-the-ten-mountains. I am the mother of Born-to-be-in-the-Sun. "I know him, he is the mink. Come, I will show you. He is now waiting for the frog-woman to come down off my grand-father's Thunder Bird Totem Pole." The pretty lady took his hand. As they walked along she told her story. "One morning, while I was making a sea-otter blanket, the sun came and shone on my back through a knot hole in my room. Shortly after the mink was born, he grew up to be a man very quickly. One day he came to me and said, "Mother, I want to marry the frog-woman." "But you won't like her croaking." "That is just what I like." "Go on," I said, so they were married, and then they left in a canoe for the distant mountains far across the waters and did not come back." Tum-Turn lead pretty lady to where the Totem Pole stood and there was the mink talking to the frog-woman. His mother spoke gently to him. "My boy Born-to-be-in-the-Sun". He smiled and rolled his eyes. "Mother, my wife and I have been resting under the protection of the Thunder Bird's spirit of goodwill. He will be glad to meet you." At those words, Thunder Bird flew off from the top of the Totem Pole. Flashing his eyes like lightning and flapping his wings, making thunder. He circled the village and came back where the visitors were standing. He took off his feather clothing and mask and became a man. Thunder Bird then commanded all those on the Totem to arouse themselves, come down to the ground, take off their masks and meet Mink's mother. Some of the myth people took off their masks and became human. Those who did not were Ho-hook. Zoon-a-qua and Raven. Nice-to-look-at related her story again of the sun, and she had come to seek him. But how to get to his house in the sky no one knew . Thunder Bird said he could fly up there. Raven thought it best to wait for sundown then the house would not be so high in the Heavens. Finally Tum-Tum said, "Let us make bird arrows and shoot them at his house. If it can be hit, we can shoot another and another into their hocks, then we will have an arrow chain that will reach from earth to Skyland." So they all got busy making arrows. Mink made a strong yew wood bow. When all was ready, Tum-Tum took the bow and began shooting upward making the chain like he said. Only a blunt one was left over. Zoon-a-qua, the Sleepy one woke up and said, "I will shoot this one to wake the sun," for a cloud had blotted out the house. Up and up it went and was soon lost to sight. They all stood around in wonder, waiting to see what would happen. The sun has many tricks. The arrow returned with such swiftness that Zoon-a-qua could not dodge and it hit him on the head leaving a big bump which amazed everyone and made them laugh. Tum-Tum shook the arrow chain and it became a cedar rope, up which he and Pretty Lady started to climb followed by the mink with the Frog-Woman on his back. After climbing for a long time they finally came to a big house. From its front a great stream of light poured forth over all creation. Standing near the doorway was a tall strong man with a broom in his hand bidding them welcome. This was all so strange the Frog-Woman began croaking. The Sun invited them to come inside. He inquired of Nice-to-look-at, "I've seen you before." The Mink spoke up and said, "This is your wife and I am your child." To which he replied, "I remember now. Could you loan me your feet? I have to walk all the time, my feet get tired and if you don't keep sweeping your aunts and grandmothers (the clouds) will come and then it will get dark inside. And all Skyland as well, if Thunder Bird knows that he will flash his lightning and roll his thunder to scare the people of the village to spill their buckets of raindrops. You had better come in the house, the rascal may be up to some mischief right now." The sun began sweeping again. When the Mink and his friends went inside they saw many wondrous things. Everything was bright and spotlessly clean. In the four corners stood strong men holding up the beams that supported the roof. Large cedar crests carved with the Sun's crest were piled on top of each other all around the sides of the house. These excited the Mink's instinctive curiosity, so that he snooped around, opening and closing the boxes. One was filled with sunrises, one had sun-beams in it, another was full of rainbows, and one had sunsets. To open the four boxes at one time would be disastrous but the Mink did not know. Others held the Sun's masks, rattles, dishes carved of wood and costumes for his dances. Boxes of food were stored everywhere. In the center of the house there was a hole from which one could see the earth. Below this was the well of life and death through which the souls from the dead departed from the earth. Unborn souls went from here on the journey of life. The Sun addressed the Mink again, "When are you going to lend me your feet? My, it's getting foggy in here." The Mink had no more than started to take them off when there was a screeching noise like a thousand owls. The four strong men holding up the roof became frightened as the whole house trembled with a skyquake. There was a great confusion, the Thunder Bird was outside, lightning flashed, thunder rolled—he was having fun. The Sun's visitors slid from one end of the house to the other until they all disappeared through the Well of Life and Death. They came floating down, down and down to the earth, landing noiselessly as a snowflake on a sandy beach, then started to make up their Totem-Pole again with the Thunder Bird on top. Tum-Tum woke at the call of his mother. "You naughty boy, here is where you have been hiding. Get your blanket and come in the house out of the rain." submitted by JoshAsdvgi to Native_Stories [link] [comments] |
2023.05.28 03:06 ImpishMisconception I have theory that the whole Addams Family are all on the Autism spectrum.
So, I am Autistic and I have a brother that is Autistic as well.
I also love The Addams Family the original series starring John Astin and Carolyn Jones and The Addams Family movies starting Raul Julia and Angelica Huston.
I am only basing this theory on that particular series and those movies, nothing else. So this not including other Addams Family movies or series since this family never changes, there is little need to go into other series or movies.
Besides that original series (which went from 1964 - 1965 as it only had two seasons) was the best series and the two movies starring Raul Julia and Angelica Huston were the best movies in my opinion so that's why I'm only focusing this theory on that series and those two movies.
To demonstrate why I think the whole Addams Family is on the Autism spectrum, I will need to explain what Autism is and the signs of Autism.
Autism is a social and learning disorder and is a spectrum affecting many people in a variety of ways.
People are born Autistic, it's not a disease one can catch. Right now there is no conclusive cause for Autism, although there are many conspiracy theories, none of those conspiracy theories have any conclusive hard scientific evidence for the cause of Autism. I am not going to go into those theories because that's not what this post is about.
People born with Autism will die with Autism as there is no known cure. I know of some conspiracies claiming people have been cured of Autism but again not hard scientific evidence for any cure. I won't go into those theories either as again that's not what this post is about.
Now on to the signs of Autism, the signs of Autism are many.
The most notable ones in no particular order are...
- Problems with speech such as not learning to speak until a later than normal, stuttering or stammering, repeating, echolalia, using bigger words and formal sounding speech, or not speaking at all.
- Toe Walking.
- Stimming such as rocking back and forth and hand flapping.
- Tending to obsess over certain subjects for months or even years at a time.
- Needing a strict routine and very upset if this routine is changed at all.
- Typically not physically affectionate, might not be comfortable with hugging or holding hands for example.
- Has trouble reading and understanding facial reactions, body language, and social cues.
There are a lot more, and I don't want to list them all as that's not what this post is about.
If you are curious here is a Twitter thread that really expounds on the signs of Autism -
https://twitter.com/autismsupsoc/status/1540282371467001856?t=Ibysy4a3kGD8jVsazUtuVQ&s=19 A list of signs and symptoms of Autism from the CDC -
https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/signs.html List of signs of Autism from the National Autism Association -
https://nationalautismassociation.org/resources/signs-of-autism/ So, now on to why I think the whole Addams Family is on the Autism spectrum, which is what this post is about.
Firstly, it's because of the way the Addams Family dresses and I am not speaking of the gothic look.
Autistic people dress in what is comfortable for them, we don't follow trends. So, what we wear tends to stand out even if we don't mean it to.
Gomez Addams's stripped suit always looks to me as if it's a bit too big for him, maybe he prefers loose-fitting clothing. Some Autistic people prefer loose-fitting clothing. Plus he has a pocket watch that he does not need since he has wrist watch. He probably likes the pocket watch because it's like one a train conductor would wear (more on the train thing further below.)
Morticia's dress is always a black very tight-fitting dress. She probably likes the feel of the tightness of the dress. Some Autistic people enjoy the feel of tight-fitting clothing, I prefer very tight skinny jeans as I like the sensation of wearing tight jeans.
Also, notice that this family always wears the same stuff? Other families in sitcoms and movies, change their outfits at least once but never the Addams Family, they are always wearing the same outfits.
Gomez is always in his stripped suit (I think he only had three costume changes in the Addams Family movies. One was where he wore a top hat and Victorian suit to Uncle Fester's wedding, the second was when he did a salsa dance with Morticia in a restaurant, I will also address the dancing further below, and the third was in the morning scene of the first Addams family movie and Gomez is wearing a Fez hat and robe) otherwise he just wears the striped suit.
Morticia is always in her tight black dress. Pugsly is always in his stripped t-shirt and black shorts. Wednesday is always in her black dress. Uncle Fester is always in his frumpy robe. Grandmama is always in her black dress and shawl. They don't change their outfits.
The only time Wednesday and Pugsly changed outfits was once for swimming when they were in summer camp, once for Uncle Fester's wedding and even then Pugsly just wore a black coat over his outfit and Wednesday's dress just had longer sleeves, and the only other time was when Wednesday wore a black ninja-like outfit when trying to break out of summer camp. (I am purposely not including the costumes Wednesday and Puglsy had to wear in summer camp for the Thanksgiving play because they were forced to wear them, it wasn't a choice and I am only talking about clothes they chose to wear.)
I am not including Lurch and Thing because Thing is a hand and doesn't wear clothes and Lurch isn't family, he's the Butler. The Addams treat him like family but genetically, Lurch isn't family. I also am not sure if Thing is genetically family, he could be, but I am not certain of it.
Autistic people usually wear the same outfits every day and the Addams family also rarely changes what they wear.
...
The next thing is the Addams do keep to a strict routine.
Notice that in the series Gomez Addams stops to check his pocket watch often and Morticia often notes that it's time for a meal or the mail or time to feed her plants. In the movie after the clock strikes on the mantle, Thing appears and goes straight to Gomez as it's morning and time to wake up Morticia. Also, after Wednesday and Puglsy are done playing William Tell, they are heading out the door and off to school with their lunches in hand while Gomez plays golf while Morticia drinks her coffee.
Autistic also keep to a strict schedule that might look bizarre to some but we need that structure.
The Addams Family morning scene -
https://youtu.be/NT5qGx2P2LM I also want to point out that in that morning scene above, Morticia shows sensitivity to sunlight. Maybe it's because she is supposed ro be a Vampire but Autistic people are known to be sensitive to bright lights and sunlight.
The next thing I noticed was the dancing. Gomez and Morticia love their waltzes, but ever notice that they even waltz differently than others?
Autistic dancing also can look a bit different than other dancing, it's just how we like to move.
Gomez and Morticia teach Lurch how to dance -
https://youtu.be/qFs8CsthLrQ Morticia and Gomez dance scene -
https://youtu.be/NIDabDkcS8o The Mamushka -
https://youtu.be/Mw0IakmQri0 Addams family dancing -
https://youtu.be/eyczjNr4hGE Next on my list, Wednesday has an aversion to hugging which most Autistic people also have an aversion for.
In the movie The Addams Family Values, while at summer camp a camp counsellor suggests a group hug and Wednesday replies, "We don't hug."
Also, as far as I know, Wednesday still has an aversion to hugging in the Netflix series named after her, I don't know though as I haven't seen it so correct me if I am wrong on that.
I also noticed Pugsly rarely talks, he does, but it's very rare in both the series and the movies that Pugsly says anything. I am thinking he has some speech issues because he doesn't speak very much. Autistic people also struggle with speech.
Now I come to the love of trains, in both the series and the movies, Gomez Addams has a train set that he plays with. In the series, he plays with them for fun, in the movies he plays with them as a release for stress and anger.
Most Autistic people like trains, but not all of them, some Autistic people have no interest at all in trains but most Autistic people love trains.
Addams family train wreck scenes -
https://youtu.be/5kS-vk9mPR8 Gomez train scene -
https://youtu.be/y_ANuuAjPdU Wednesday and Pugsly play different games than most other children, which is the next thing that caught my attention.
Autistic children often play different games and play with toys differently than non-Autistic children do. Although it's often not as dark and macabre as the games Wednesday and Pugsly play from their William Tell game to playing "Is there a god", it's still different than what is typical.
The last thing I will bring up for my theory is stimming which is very common in Autistic people. Every Autistic person stims differently and so it's no surprise that the Addams family stims are very different.
With Gomez Addams, I think his stims are his trains, playing golf, the swordplay/duelling, dancing, and the way he kisses Morticia. He doesn't just kiss her on the hand, he goes all the way up her arm.
I think Morticia, I think her stims are dancing, knitting, and chopping the heads off roses.
I think Wednesday's and Pugsly's stims are the games they play, playing with their food, and taking down stop signs.
I haven't mentioned Grandmama or Uncle Fester much because they aren't shown very much so very little is known about them, besides they aren't the main characters. Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, and Pugsly are the main characters.
That is why I think the Addams family is on the Autism spectrum.

2023.05.28 02:53 xingzoa Elgin's T-Shirt
I looked through other post here and other places. (I noticed this when Fatima takes him to the Brundles) I haven't heard anyone mention the white band on the crow/raven's right wing. Just like Boyd's bandage he put on his right arm after the "worms scratch". Also, I am trying to figure out the shape behind the bird on his shirt. It seems to be purposeful.

2023.05.28 00:59 ThankYouVeryMoth Horpe I - Succession
11th Moon, 200 AC Ashgrove, The Moth's March It was a caw from the seldom-used rookery that woke Septon Ambrode from his precious sleep.
Tend to the ravens, they said, tend to their ailments and brew medicines and potions and a dozen other things.
Ambrode wanted to scream. He was a fucking septon, and here, Lord Terrence wanted him to be a wizard, a maester, and a preacher all in one.
But he sighed, dusted his habit off, and called, "JARMAN!"
Quick steps came rushing up the stairs, and finally, the squire erupted from the door panting. "A letter? Odd!"
"Yes, yes," groaned Ambrode. "Help me with the raven, will you?"
The septon let the squire do his work, retrieving some piece of parchment from the black bird, its incessant cries distracting Ambrode as he poured his morning cup of ale. "What is it?" asked Ambrose. "What, praytell, is so important that this bloody raven has to disturb me sleep?"
"Uh." Jarman was frozen in place. "Best you read it for yourself." The squire handed off the letter, and, for some reason, began to rifle through drawers, looking for something.
Ambrode narrowed his eyes as he looked the letter over.
To mine uncle Pykewood, and the whore Alys,
It is with the deepest regrets that I must inform you of my grandfather's death. As you well know, Alys, your son is a bastard; and you, Pykewood, shan't try to usurp my place.
I expect you both to vacate the castle lest I have to raise the issue with Lady Baratheon.
All Become Equal,
Jena Horpe, Lady of the Moth's March
Ambrode continued sipping on his mug of ale. It didn't really faze him, in truth, but if Terrence had died, then that was a good excuse to leave.
"I—Lord Terrence told me t' write his will, you know," said Jarman.
Ambrode sighed. "Really, now?"
"Aye!" Jarman stated confidently. "Jus'.. let me find it. 'Twas t' be sent t' the High Septon, and the Crown."
"Do what you will." Ambrode was finally free. He chugged down the rest of his ale. "Send off that raven to King's Landing. And fetch Tanda! She can show Lady Jena's letter to Pykewood."
Matthos yawned.
Sitting atop the battlements, naught but forest revealed itself to the eye; a green canopy obscuring crags and hills, billows of smoke rising lazily from villages near and far. The mists would have covered the sight usually, though they seemed to have cleared today while the clouds still persisted. At least it wasn't dreary. Rocking back and forth in his chair, Ser Matthos the Dire nursed a tankard of mead while the guards made their rounds. A few sat about and chatted. If Pykewood were here, they would have no doubt been scolded.
But he wasn't here; he hadn't made the rounds for a while.
Matthos smiled. He was not so Dire today, as the green boys had monikered him. The mead and the view brought a sweet, if brief, tranquility.
Then came Ser Osric, donning a blue surcoat after his own stupid nickname. Matthos let out a sigh. Osric did not give him an opportunity; the lad dragged along a chair and took a seat. "How long do you think they'll be staying?"
Matthos shrugged. "So long as Lady Aelinor keeps them there, I s'pose."
"Have you heard about the war in the Riverlands?" Osric added immediately.
Thankfully, some reprieve was found when old Wat the Whittler, near seventy years old and still with a pike in hand and rusted mail hanging off his shoulders, made himself known with a holler. "Ho!" he coughed. "Get up, lad, get up. Need to rest me legs." Wat motioned frantically with his hand. The blue knight stood awkwardly, and the old man took his place on the chair with a grunt. "Agh. You said something about those Riverlands, did you?"
Osric nodded. "Aye! Only wish I could be there, fighting those scum." Of which side he spoke of, Matthos did not know.
Wat scoffed and waved a dismissive hand. "You're not strong enough. Me nephew from Tarth, gods keep him"—a proud smile washed over Wat's visage—"went there to do battle with Lord, eh... Mooter. Even got himself a knighthood afore he left. Strong as a boar, he is! D'you remember him, Matthos? Goodwin."
The mention of Goodwin brought Matthos some surprise. "Goodwin? Tall lad, one who used t' shovel dung?" he asked, met with a tired nod from Wat. "Seven bloody hells. Always wondered what came of him." Matthos paused in some consideration, bringing a hand up to scratch at his chin. He grinned. "Boy's a knight now? Har! Never thought he had it in him. Used to be scared o' rabbits, I remember."
Wat scowled. "Scared o' rabbits? Bugger off. Me nephew's always been a brave lad. They call him Ser Goodwin the Gallant now, I heard."
"Brave?" Osric snorted. "He was too scared to ever train with us. Goodwin the Girly, more like."
Matthos suppressed a chuckle. Wat turned beet red, and without warning, he swung the pike around to strike the back of Osric's knee. The blue knight hissed in pain, limping to a side.
"Respect your elders, boy! Me nephew's worth ten of you!" Wat chided, his voice hoarse.
Footfalls came then, and Osric's face went pale. He immediately stood at attention, face yet twisted in a grimace.
When Matthos turned, he saw Pykewood in his mail and surcoat, eyes scarcely taking note of the three soldiers. A rare face now, oft absorbed in wargames, though his presence commanded some deference. Matthos bowed his head. "My lord."
"My father is dead," announced Pykewood with a scowl. A long silence settled over the group, who exchanged glances with one another while Pykewood examined a letter in his hand.
And when the tear of parchment sounded and the letter was thrown over the ramparts, their commander's decision came.
"Gather the men. We make for King's Landing on the morrow," said Pykewood, staring onto the lands that he would have once called his.

2023.05.27 22:30 KyleKKent Out of Cruel Space, Part 695
First Capes and Conundrums
“Thank you for seeing me. I am Doctor Malaise. Psychologist and Family Councillor.” She says shaking the hand of the defeated looking Yauya man that looks like he’s been through a small war. “Before we begin, do understand that your son is in good health and currently being kept busy. He earned some money as a civilian contractor as well, and has used a portion of it to hire me to help sort out this situation.”
“Good afternoon ma’am. Are really... yes it would be that bad with Albin and his sisters. With Albin and me... Sweet Ancestors what a mess.” Thalison Shadow says with a sigh. He and Albin’s mother are sitting front and center with the other mothers in the room observing. The blood mother and father having priority in who’s part of this meeting.
“Don’t think of me as an authority, think of me as a neutral party and sympathetic ear. Yes, your son is who hired me for this, however my ultimate goal is to bring some level of peace and understanding among your family. Which means I’ll be speaking to your daughters after you and I’ve already spoken to your son. Understand?”
“I do.”
“Do you also understand that I am not a lawyer and am not offering advise on the legal end of things?”
“Yes.”
“Very good. Now then, in your own words, please describe this situation as you understand it.” Doctor Malaise prompts and Thalison nods.
“Right well... I suppose this was coming, or something like this was coming for years now. Albin is... well... when he was smaller he was a sickly little boy. He just never had an appetite and never really had the energy of his sisters either older or younger. We did the responsible thing and kept him inside and ensured he had high nutrition food to sustain him despite the fact he’d usually only nibble at his meals.”
“Your son didn’t mention being sickly growing up.”
“We made a point of not letting him know. We treated him like he was normal, like there was nothing wrong and he would be fine. Because he would. What he had was Gurana’s Syndrome. The family is somewhat prone to it, the disorder shows up at least once a generation.”
“For the sake of clarity could you explain Gurana’s Syndrome?” Doctor Malaise asks.
“In essence your child has a very small appetite and low energy. It’s not a deformity, an injury or any normal sickness so a healing coma can’t just wipe it away. It’s a developmental disorder that nearly always clears away when you hit puberty. It’s based in your Axiom Profile. It gives you the sensation of being fed, but it’s very inefficient at it. So long as the child in question is properly fed despite the small appetite and low Axiom intake they will eventually sort themselves out. Some earlier, some later, but never later than puberty. For Albin, three years ago he went to bed tired, barely able to get a few nibbles down, and woke up the next morning bursting with energy, ravenous and much, much stronger.”
“That must have been a relief.”
“Like you wouldn’t believe. Seeing him reach to refill his bowl at breakfast brought a small cheer to the family.”
“When did he start drifting away from the family? This tension has been building for a while and it had to start somewhere.”
“I was getting to that. Now... you understand Yauya have a strong hunting culture right? I’m a Homebody, but I’ve gone out and speared beings three times my size with sharpened sticks to drag the corpse home for a meal over an open fire. I’ve done it in celebration for each of my sons and daughters, I go and get their mother a big feast to enjoy. However... when we took Albin hunting. Something went wrong.”
“Do you know what happened exactly?” Doctor Malaise asks and Thalison sighs as he rubs his eyes.
“Yes, he wasn’t as aware as he should have been on his first hunt and the prey got very close to him. His mother saved him. Speared the beast right through the heart. But it had already pounced and it was close enough for some of the blood to land on him in that first hunt.”
“That sounds fairly traumatizing.” She says and Thalison just sighs as Albin’s mother gives his hand a squeeze.
“It was bad. We hadn’t meant to, but while we had assured that he didn’t think of himself as strange, we did treat him very delicately when he was a child. So... yeah...” Azisa Shadow says and Thalison pats her on the knee.
“So that’s where his aversion to normal hunted started. But where does Beaky come into the picture?” Doctor Malaise asks.
“My daughters will periodically make a concentrated effort to get Albin to join them on a hunt. For a while it worked. But the last time it did was when they were hunting full grown Tharaso Wings. Cliff side and ocean hunters that make beautiful clothing and taste really good. But the last time it happened... Albin was separated from the main group. He was just really getting his mastery of the cloak at the time and was proving to be a very quick study. He faded out of sight, got distracted and left the main group.” Thalison explains and Doctor Malaise nods
“He then finds himself right near the nest as his sisters are scaring the birds into taking flight so they can be shot down. The girls succeed and he’s left there wondering if he should take a shot. Then he finds a large egg that’s shaking ever so slightly.” Azisa finishes and Doctor Malaise nods.
“And that moment must have been nothing short of pure magic to him.” Doctor Malaise notes.
“We never saw him happier.” Thalison says before sighing and leaning back. “And now it’s all gone to hell...”
“Why did you allow your daughters to bring his pet during the hunt. Surely you would know that the air outside the protective shields will cook and kill most living beings in moments.”
“I’m aware. As is the whole family. Unfortunately, Beaky wasn’t aware and he took off his shield generator. Apparently the little fellow didn’t like how it felt and was smart enough to take it off. Then it saw some prey and... well... you know the rest.”
“So you even had protective equipment for the animal to personally wear that would have saved it’s life if it hadn’t removed it?” Doctor Malaise asks.
“Yes and the little fellow was always much better behaved around Albin. The moment he would leave the room or leave line of sight Beaky would work at the straps and quickly take it off. Turn your back for five seconds and you’d hear a clatter as the shield generator hits the floor.” Azisa says and Doctor Malaise considers.
“Which would contribute to his issue with this. With Beaky waiting for him to leave before acting out and removing the shield generator only when he was gone he wouldn’t think it was an issue.” Doctor Malaise notes and Azisa nods.
“Yes, he never really clicked with traditional hunting. He’s more content to study and understand the animals which is why he normally sits things out. Which infuriates his sisters as they want to be with him but what he wants to do bores them to tears.”
“So in conclusion, your son, who was very low energy growing up recovered but had a poor introduction to hunting giving him a distaste for it. His sisters have been trying to get him interested in in the traditional Yauya pass time and in the process he came across a hatching Tharaso Wing which he promptly tamed.”
“Yes, we also helped him register and inoculate Beaky.” Thalison says and Doctor Malaise nods.
“His taming while complete enough that no one felt threatened by the animal wasn’t fully complete so the animal had the tendency to remove ornamentation. Such as the Shield Generator that you got to ensure the animal wouldn’t burn in the local atmosphere.” She continues.
They nod.
“Finally, the taming was so good that the bird would only act out when Albin left the room. Right?”
“Right.”
“Would his sisters often try to use Beaky in order to get Albin to come hunting?”
“It did happen more than once. But Beaky was never hurt and Albin always went with them, coming home in good spirits and teasing his sisters. This time he refused and...”
“What was so different about this time that Albin refused?”
“I think he just really doesn’t like the city. But after they came back with Beaky dead...” Thalison begins
“He doesn’t want to come back.” Azisa says. “We signed that form so it would let us know where he is, and if he’s doing something then he’s not thinking about... other things.”
“As I said before this meeting truly started, your son is being kept busy. He has adult supervision at all times and is being observed by an outside party with emergency services on speed dial if anything happens.” Doctor Malaise says.
“I know it’s just... how do we come back from this? Albin seemed to drift apart and away from the family the closer we tried to hold him and if this doesn’t put up a wall between us I’ll be shocked.” Thalison asks.
“First off, there’s no deflecting blame. You can clarify things with Albin, but if you don’t accept your part of the blame for this terrible accident then he’s going to back away from you.” Doctor Malaise says. “Your fault is in allowing things to happen. Which means that you need to understand just what your daughters actually intended and also understand how Albin would have seen it.”
The parents nod.
“Good, now the last thing I need to know is why you brought the family here for a vacation? I understand if it’s something for most of the family. But it’s a bad fit for Albin.”
“Not as much as you think. While the hunting prize is in the trenches and the capital city here is based around it. There’s also easy access to the plains and fertile valleys beyond. They’re apparently teeming with small life and I assumed it would be an amazing place for Albin to take Beaky flying and hunting. It was what we were planning to do later today.” Thalison explains and Doctor Malaise actualyl smirks.
“That would have worked out very well actually. Some of the local wildlife are very fast and very agile. They could have had the two of them chasing Little Leapers for hours and having all kinds of fun.” Doctor Malaise says with a smile
“Well, ten seconds of inattention and that’s thoroughly not going to happen.” Thalison says with a groan. “Is there anything else you need?”
“Not unless you think there’s more you need to tell me. Although I would like to speak with your daughters next.” Doctor Malaise says and he nods.
“Right. I’ll go get them then.” He says standing up. “Be honest with my Doctor. Can we recover from this?”
“It will take work, and you will need to learn to communicate better. But yes.”
“Any recommendations?” Thalison asks.
“Go out with the deliberate intention of getting him another Tharaso Wing. Then help him raise the next one. Be part of it. Share it. Animal taming is clearly something that Albin values and treasures. Be part of it. Have your daughters be part of it. Don’t just let him do it or tell him you approve. Be part of it. Praise him for it. Let him understand that his skills and talents have value and you value them and him with them. And get your daughters on board with this. It will take some time, but it will heal the wound and you should be closer than before.”
“I hope so. ... Do you think he’ll choose a better name than Beaky this time?”
“Even if the name is as silly as Beaky Junior or even less dignified, use it and allow it. Your son has dreams and talents that have been thoroughly disrespected even if only by accident. It takes respect to heal disrespect.” Doctor Malaise says and there are more nods from the parents. “Now, when it comes to the other siblings, I need to know which ones were most involved in this event. Who was there when Beaky died?”
“I’ll go get them. I assume you want to speak with the ones who took Beaky first and separate before speaking to the others?”
“That will be just fine.”
“I and their mothers will be in the room as you speak with them.” Thalison notes.
“Good, I don’t have to request you stay in the room with them then.” Doctor Malaise says and Thalison gives her an odd look.

2023.05.27 22:21 d8sconz The life and times of John Marmon, the Hokianga Pakeha Maori - Chapter 5
CHAPTER V
Rawlinson remained perfectly passive for a long time after we left the vessel. He seemed stupefied by the course things had taken, and his brain was sodden with the quantity of alcohol he had imbibed. He appeared to consider us as embodied fiends, for he crouched in the bottom of the boat, regarding us ever and anon with a piteous glance expressive of fear and apprehension. Fortunately, before the fire broke out, all of us had partaken of a hearty meal of salt junk and biscuit, so that we decided not to break upon our stores that night, except to give Rawlinson a little biscuit soaked in water. He appeared thankful for it and ate ravenously.
The night fell. The stars came out, the sea was moderately calm, although a fine fresh breeze was blowing. All the scene before us seemed blessed with a great peace except the few castaways who were scudding onward, it might be to death.
It was agreed we should watch by turns, and as I was the youngest and needed the most sleep the first watch was assigned to me. Rolling themselves up in some sailcloth which had been stowed away in a corner of the boat, in which also was discovered a small keg of rum, concealed by some of the seamen when they broke open the grog chest, my companions, one and all, went to sleep, leaving me alone. And as I stood at the stern with the sheet in my hand, watching the gleam of the stars upon the water, the long trail of light the rising moon threw across the ocean, and the stealthy glide of the sharks that were following in our wake, a feeling of utter loneliness and desolation came over me, as if I had bidden farewell to life forever, and was driving onward, surely, steadily, impelled by a mysterious remorseless fate, to the bonfire from whence no traveller returns.
I watched on, taking a pull at the rum now and then to keep my spirits up, until I suddenly found I was hungry. Straightway I made my way to the biscuit bag, and helped myself. Now our allowance had been estimated at one biscuit per day for each man. What nobody sees, nobody knows, said I, and I quietly eat four of them. Brutal selfishness! I hear a reader cry. Perhaps so, my friend, but pray tell me what selfishness is? Gratifying oneself at the expense of another, you reply. Indeed! and have you never, when taking your nobbler, bolted it speedily, that you might not have to shout for the friend you saw coming. Reader, man’s chief cod is to look after number one, and the better he does it the more he will be thought of. Get all you can, give as little as you can, and you’ll be a great man yet. Soon after this my watch ended; I knocked up Thomson, and tumbled into his place - with qualms of conscience, the pious reader will hint. Not a bit, but with mighty satisfaction that I had got at least my share of the passing things of life.
When I awoke it was broad daylight Jonas Simpson was sitting in the stern-sheets; the sea was calm, and all my companions were astir except Rawlinson, who seemed to be sleeping very quietly. I got up, pulled myself together, and proceeded to eat my half biscuit and drink my allowance of weak rum and water. “Better call up Rawlinson to get something, boy,” said Thomson. I called him, I shook him, but to no purpose; I took him by the hand, it was icy cold. Rawlinson would never take anything more in this life, he was dead. He had quietly passed away in sleep, leaving only the shell where the spirit had been. Expressions of sorrow would have been out of place, first, because he had been universally disliked on account of his tyrannical disposition, next because we deemed ourselves too close to death to grieve because another found his rest before us. Without a word we took him up and flung him overboard, an unexpected breakfast for our followers, the sharks. One less mouth to feed, I calculated, and one, too, upon whom to lay the blame of stealing the rum and biscuits were the deficiency ever detected, since dead men tell no tales, dead man makes a grand scapegoat. When you have prigged anything, reader, and are found out, lay the blame on a dead friend, for friendship never goes beyond the grave.
This was the monotonous tenor of our existence for the next week. Gradually our stock of provisions decreased until only a day's allowance remained; we were worn to skeletons, we could scarce draw our breath, hardly sufficient strength remained to luff the boat when the wind changed. Hour by hour our eyes scanned the horizon for a sail; so eagerly did we watch that our imagination created vessels bearing down upon us when no vessels were near. Gradually that terrible day wore on, we ate our last rations, greedily devouring every crumb, and grudging each other their unfinished portion. Then absolute want stared us in the face, and we must look elsewhere for the moans of life. In vain had we striven to shoot the sharks or the sea birds, in vain had we fished for anything we could catch, were it only seaweed. Now, as I have said, one of us must die that his comrades might live. Who was it to be? I had observed the seamen talking together and casting glances at me, as they thought I should be the first sacrifice; but my opinions upon this head did not coincide with theirs, and I determined, whatever came, I should not die. The night passed, and the day came. Hatefully rose the loathed sun to gladden creation, but to scorch us with His fierce coppery rays; the sea was at a dead calm, not a breath of wind stirred, the sail flapped idly against the mast, great beaked birds flew over us with discordant screams, horrid gliding things looked at us leerfully from the festering depths of ocean, the sharks seemed already whetting their teeth in anticipation of a feast. Oh, God! it was a terrible day - a day on which one of us must die.
At length our hunger could be restrained no longer. We must draw lots for the coming doom all could not escape - one must be the victim. Tearing s piece of sail-cloth into strips, Thomson cut them into various lengths, and then we proceeded to draw them. He to whose lot fell the shortest strip was the doomed man. “God help us,” said Thomson, “but it must be done - we need not all die; let us draw.” Tremblingly we drew the lots, and with feverish haste, we showed them to each other. Merciful Heaven! the shortest was mine. Was I to die, and I so young? Was I to leave this pleasant world of ours when I had been only thirteen short years in it? Was I to die, and bury all my early promise with me? The thought was horrible, yet before me, in the little strip of cloth, lay the stern verdict of my doom. Hope leaped back into the eyes of my comrades when their term of life was lengthened, whilst the light of life slowly died out of mine in the face of dim eternity. I was doomed; still I would die game. “I will die game,” I cried, “I will be my own executioner; give me two pistols, I will put them to my ears and fire.” Wonder sat upon the features of my companions; was I man or demon, “Give me the rum-keg” I next asked. It was handed to me, and I drained it dry. With the rush of the fiery spirit through my veins, came a fierce determination to live, and not to die; another must be the victim, not I.
The hour came. Hunger was gnawing the vitals of my comrades; they were ravenous for my blood. “Hand me the pistols,” I said. They were loaded and handed to me. Looking with coolness at the flint-locks, as if to assure myself that they were right, and that my death might be speedy, I placed the muzzle of my left hand pistol against my ear, brought that in my right hand slowly round into position, and ere one of them could move, shot Jonas Simpson as dead as a doornail. Then I feigned madness; with a maniacal laugh I threw myself on the body, and lapped like a dog the warm Life’s blood that oozed from his shattered brain. Ha,ha, ‘twas played well. Horror-struck at my deed and at my expressions, Thomson and Tom Brown shrank into the bows, leaving me lying on the corpse. Gradually I found my senses leaving me, the world became more dim every instant. Is this death? If so, it is sweet as soft tropical breezes.
I remember no more until I found myself lying in a hammock in the fo'c'sle of the “Firebrand,” Captain Wilkins, receiving rough but kindly attentions from the Sailors. They had descried our boat on the horizon against the setting sun, and had made for it. But they found only a crew of corpses. All were dead except myself, and the only trace of life in me was a feeble flickering of the heart. I told my story, suppressing the true account of Simpson's death, and stated that he died by his own hand while in a state of insanity. My youth was a voucher for the truthfulness of my tale, and I was treated with marked kindness by everyone on board, a small subscription being set on foot for me, to mark, as was said, their appreciation of my conduct. Still another proof that the devil looks after his own.
The “ Firebrand" was a fine new schooner bound from Otaheiti to Sydney. She was within twelve days of her destination when she picked me up, so that before long I was landed upon the King’s Wharf in very different trim from that in which I put off from it a few months before. I went at once to the owner, Mr Paterson, and stated my case. He treated me with great kindness, paid me my wages, and gave me a small bonus into the bargain, promising that after a few months’ spell ashore, I should be-appointed to another vessel.
“And then you went home to your father and mother, I suppose,” says the gentle reader, conjuring up sweet visions of paternal embraces, tears, and kisses. Not a bit, my friend, recollect I had cut the apron-strings, and considered myself my own master. My first move was to make for a convenient grog-shop, kept on the sly by one of the military, and commence spend my money, as I considered every sailor should, in a good spree. Just the day before we arrived, a batch of female convicts had come from England in the “Thames” frigate, and the soldiers had been busy selecting the best looking as companions for a month or two before they were sent to the prison. This was winked at in Government House - nay, even the offenders and their paramours were publicly asked to the balls, much to the disgust of Sam Marsden, the parson. I did not turn up at home until every sixpence had flown, and I was reduced to the very verge of starvation, for what is the use of money if it ain't a means of a fellows enjoyment. It is not money that is the root of all evil, but the love of it, and, blow it, I had never any time to get in love with it, for it was always in such a hurry to get away.
My father and mother on my arrival at once killed the fatted calf - metaphorically speaking, I mean, for it was a fatted hen, - and I was received as the prodigal son. I told my story, heightening the colour of a few of the details, such as the number of assailing Tongans, how many of them I had killed with my own hands, and the part I had taken in the conflict, all of which were swallowed with greedy interest, retailed with additions to credulous neighbours, who, in their turn, contributed their share to the interest, until “Sinbad the Sailor” was a very ordinary gentleman to myself, in point of marvellous adventure. I did not fail to enquire regarding my fricnd, the hangman, and found he had been more drunk than hurt - in fact, was so far restored in two days’ time as to be able to resume his professional duties.
I found Sydney but little altered since I left it, save in the matter of a few more buildings; and in life, being, if anything, a little more reckless. Murder and vice were on the increase. There was hardly a virtuous female in the colony, and the men lived as gaily and as jollily as they could. Brave old days were these, when a fellow went to the bad as thoughtlessly as he went to chapel. I, too, picked up a few of my old chums, and we met always at the “Sailors’ Arms," where we heard all the news and stood the chance of sharing in a “shout,” when some half-drunk Jack was knocking down his pay.
In vain did my father and mother try to persuade me to relinquish the sea and to learn some trade ashore. I told them frankly that if I did not go to sea I would do worse on land, so that they had the two alternatives before them. With regret they saw that persuasion was unavailing, and that it would be as well to say no more, so I continued my free and easy life until the “Harwich,” Captain Simmons, coming in, belonging to Mr Paterson likewise, was informed that I was to go on board of her when she refitted, and take my second voyage in my apprenticeship.
The " Harwich” was the finest vessel my employer had. She was a brigantine of 500 tons, and had only made three voyages previous to the one she was about to undertake. Mr Paterson had not as yet entered into the whaling trade, but seeing the success of the other Sydney merchants had in it, and the large gains they made, he determined also to embark in the speculation. Therefore he bought the “Harwich,” engaged Captain Simmons, an experienced whaler, and a picked crew, thoroughly overhauled the vessel in every way, provisioned her for a two years cruise, and hoped for luck to be on his side. I embarked on the 16th of January, 1811, and a fortnight afterwards, while a crowd waved us farewell from the King’s Wharf, we weighed anchor and commenced our voyage, We did not leave this time with a drunken captain and a drunken crew; all seemed to augur well for the cruise of the “Harwich,” The record of which is reserved for another chapter.

Finally got that policity ad to stop!' Elk huffed in frustration. 'I'm telling you, the U.C.I. keeps getting better and better at throwing ads and bullshit to even
lag me! Well I'm also not running on
the best hardware either.- I mean look at you! When did you last upgrade?
Since I recruited you,
five years ago, you've only gotten the 'NailMesh 438.03'! You know that the latest is at 488.91! and that's an
off-brand model anyways!' Elk complained.
'Well it has worked
fine enough for me! It even manages to run you without a problem! And I don't really need the refresh and load times to be 2,45 nanoseconds faster, I can't even tell the difference!
Besides, I've always run the hardware until the software updates stop. It's fine for at least another year or two~.' I flicked my golden hair back as I got to the
Person Storage Shelves that stacked up to the forty foot tall ceiling.
My hud displayed my own seat at pill-box seating shelf number 804, level eleven, seat 075. There were wide simple metal ramps and scaffolding leading up to each level, with regular intervals between just five seats to funnel the mass of people as quickly as
near-post-humanly possible.
Still the many lines moved slightly forward constantly, people dividing to different levels and climbing to their, what some would call claustrophobic, sleep-in-pill-boxes.
To accommodate the avaridge, 8.5 feet tall to some reaching 12-15 feet tall, with their gene-, cybernetic-, augmented- and/or vessel modifications, the bunk bed designed 'seat' were highly adjustable, to cram as many people into one shuttle as
near-post-humanly as possible.
The pill-boxes would expand and retract their frame and fold in or out the structural armour plating, ~
for the benefit of ensuring our customer tailored experience and high quality safety.~
It was a thigh fit
coffin.
No arguing about it, the U.C.I. even sell the damned things as ones, if a customer has, ~
unfortunately suffered the ability to no longer perform business with us~, to the rest of the 'customers' next of kin!
'Well they're at least
comfortable…' I thought to myself as I tracked my way to my seat.
Of course with the trip to the Earth or further away took anywhere from two hours to few weeks, laying down without moving much at all, needed to have some sort of '
reinvigoration and entertainment module, for preventing the downsides of long term enclosure and zero-g environment, including, but not limited to-'. jada-jada-jada..
That's why, you not only were climbing into a pill-box, but into the humanoid shaped harness that would encapsulate you to skin tight level, for the entirety of the voyage.
~
to ensure the best safety, both physical and malware protection. Meteorite proofed and anti-hacking protection from our own U.C.I. VPN and downloadable subscription to our Project Buzz-Off,- an in house, adaptive, anti-aliasing, procedurally generated firewall locking, multiple real-time and sub-time hacking attempted observing and- -.
Everyone in the waiting lines, including me, were already in our U.C.I. brand plastered suits that would seamlessly connect to the coffins.
Top of the line, haptic VR and hydraulic body movement, alongside a brain-computer connection enhanced experience, to ensure a realistic virtual on flight environment.
Real food funnels as well as smell and heat simulation for any activity you might do on the flight in addition to the limited Brain-computers induced senses, as well the time-dilation capable core-prosessors to the 7.5 safe multiplier outlined to the normal human brain.
The AR indicators told me exactly where to go, it was only a matter of waiting in line as the crowds of multiple languages and translations diluted into background noise.
'So… I mean, what should I even do in the 'Souls-like' game tournament? I have no clue.' I thought to the sub-core that lounged in my brain-computer.
'Eh, just doge, hit and
don't die.' Elk in its emptiness, relaxed on a mental red velvety sofa that had appeared in my mind,
for some reason. 'That's not even
advice. Like, almost
every game is like that. Like what do I need to do, besides basic combat?' I crossed my arms at the metal image of Elk.
'Well, you level your stats, weapons and armor, get skills, get better weapons, better movement options, talk to some NPCs to get the story, gather material to make potions and craft things and weapons… all normal stuff. There could be an extra mechanic or two if one of me was feeling
extra today.
And you race to be the first on the final boss, that usually has like five phases and insta-kill mechanics on the last two phases. Or sometimes I throw in a random
cooking simulation,
DDR or a
puzzle as the last boss for
shit and giggles!' Elk laughed as we neared the end of the line.
'Ha!
Well let's see how this goes then…' I was giving the game a shot.
Before getting to my seat I noticed two rare sight in modern life, one, a Hive-mind of ten people, who shared one luxury pill-box and two, an honestly obese human.
The one obese person was actually more surprising to me than the big hive-mind. It was standard to have the nutrient drip-feeder installed to you and at least some home-kit gene therapy, so unless they didn't have malfunctioning tech, they actually chose to be so.
'Mmm… yeah, you're looking right where I want.~ Look at all those sexy lumps, that meat, mmm…' The downright gutter mind mecha-god licked its empty lips.
'Do you have to make
absolutely everything sexual? You you ever just
chill out?' I turned my eyes from the big human that was arguing with a guard about their seat being literally too small for them.
'Well no, I don't have to, but you try being inside an
autopilot program for close to five decades, without the ability to simulate porn and have no real touch sensors.
I've been thinking about
everything and how I'd wanna do it, so I'm
sorry I get a little over board about fucking.' The pervert god fragment waved its empty hooves nonchalantly.
'*Sigh* Whatever, pervert.' I muttered in my mind.
'Hey~! It isn't like you don't use simulated porn and hooker services, as much as I would, if I could. And I can't even access anything you can't see on the internet. It's frustrating~ that there isn't 24/7 humping and squirting~! And that ten-hive-mind... OooOoOhhh~-'
'Jeez!
Who the fuck dialled your sex drive to the max!? No other AI I have met,
like ever, was this depraved! You need to tone it down, Elk the fucked pervert.' I cut the data-space taking germling from digging its depravity further.
'
Fine, fine. I'll cut the lust down for now.' And like a switch being pulled the eternal feeling of lust stopped. '... I'll just arrange to get us at least
double the amount of
action when we are on Earth, than what I had initially planned!' The perverted parasite god added as I was climbing into my seat.
'*Pah*! Now I don't want any of that...' I rolled my eyes as the hydraulic arms closed around me and the VR display and the brain-link cables started downloading all the usual emergency situation memories.
'B-but its a
vacation!!!' The pervert was actually mortified.
'And its my fucking body!' That made the sub-core shut up for once.
Hydraulics hissed and clicked to place, encapsulating me whole and making me temporarily unable to move my limbs, as metal pressed on the skin-tight suit.
I could feel as the haptics tingle on every inch of my body, as my Work Official Avatar was 'spawned' to the shuttles hub-area in VR-space, basically a luxury hotel with windows, displaying real time camera footage of the outside, many times with impossible geometry,
witch was a big trend nowadays in any VR world to have. My personal avatar, a basically a carbon copy of myself with my regular clothes just having more lights and effects added to them,
I refused to wear the big detective coat.- Still modest compared to the oddities you could regularly see on the internets.
Just surveying the flights hub-area, you could see avatars from all ends of
imagination and
abstraction.
We got jellyfish, floating eyeballs, fantasy creatures, demons of all kinds, giant- and tiny creatures, colourful splatters of art, walking plants, tuned game characters, disembodied voices, default avatars and of course the most famous ones,
anime and the furrie avatars.
Those two categories tended to never die out completely even if they were as much as equal amounts; of down-bad as the parasitic mecha-god and hated by nearly everyone, including their own communities. -
A weird paradox. Muting the chat I immediately set out to find the webpage to connect to the tournament's own lobby.
Finding the link easily as it was one of the top searches anyways I joined in, with the time-dilation switching on, and got 'teleported' to a vast grasslands, whose horizon curved slightly upwards, making the place look absolutely massive.
Wind rustled the muted coloured grass blades as orchestral gothic music blared from above, where the titularly iconic Singularity's error textured crown floated above one of its many avatars playing all the orchestra's instruments at once and singing.
'*
Awhg*, that's AXK-808554/i… a real
try-hard…' Elk mumbled, collapsing its empty form on the red sofa in exhauston.
'... Huh?...' I thought back as the orchestral sud-core's wind/lightning elemental avatar sang with its lightning body's eyes closed.
Chanting vocals rang, as violin and flute teetered here and there, drums and percussion aiding to the fast paced tempo.
Looking around you could see basically the same categories of avatars, with maybe a little more demons in the mix.- I could even recognize some of the same avatars as in the shuttles hub-area.
'
Axey boy Bob over there will probably focus more on the music and the story than the real meat and potatoes of
combat!!...' Elk flailed around on the sofa, like a spoiled kid who didn't get what they exactly wanted.
'Oh, well that sounds more interesting to me then…' I thought as I listened to the music, the haptics diving the sensation of the wind blowing my hair around.
'*Pah*
Suit yourself. No hope, religion, depression, humanity on the brink of extinguish, it's still basically the same.
Haul marks of souls-like storytelling. Not that interesting after the hundred thousand time.' Elk shook its empty antlered head.
'Well you haven't even seen it yet, I'm giving this a shot, so be more happy with that alone.' I quipped back as at the same time the orchestral song ended quietly in run on notes.
'Besides the combat will be
easy anyways, since I have the mod for quick reflexes.' I stretched myself a little.
'Oh, yeah, no. All players will have their stats begin at the same and all computing power and physical abilities reduced to the same frame, whatever that will be by the given game. That way there's no pay 2 win shit, it would be literally
cheating.' Elk explained in a bored fashion.
'O-oh shit… I-Isn't souls-likes really hard?' I realized this wouldn't be so easy.
'Fucking
da-aa, detective! That's why most people play them! Hahah!
And the award money.' Elk laughed on the sofa.
Cold sweat started to run on the back of my neck as the error crowned elemental descended from the sky, its lightning face and hands stuttering in a lower framerate.
''
Welcome everyone. I think it's about time to begin, so without further ado…
//Press start//'' A gravely voice echoed, but then switched to an 8-bit announcer voice.
The words appeared before me as everyone else.
People immediately started to disappear around me, so I too tapped the floating words.
I found myself in darkness, odd moon light reflecting from somewhere above.
A cave.- I smelled the wet clear air and felt the cold ground under me.
I was laying on the ground and slowly got up as there was now metal armor weighing me down.
'Oke, let's get going, Oscar. There's usually a weapon near the first spawn.' Elk got into a better position on the imaginary sofa.
'Yeah, ok?' I started to blindly search the way forward, the odd moonlight giving very poor visibility.
Slippery rocks almost made me fall many times as I descended gradually, making me question if this was the right way.
But after a half a minute I got to a water spring area and immediately realized what had been wrong about the moonlight. Everything was pixelated, like an old old arcade game.
'Huh, 16-bit, nice, nice. Haven't seen Bob do this sort of thing before…' Elk brushed off the non-realism right away.
The moonlight hit the underground water from a long crack in the ceiling and reflected mirages to the cave's walls, lighting the area nicely in pixelated moving symbols.
Looking at my pixelated hands I felt slightly funny, looking at the small jumping 'sensor' squares dancing on my hands, replicating every hand sign I did.
But I also took note how quickly my depth perception turned to little more than barely recognizable pixel vomit. That would be annoying…
'Ok, let's focus, can you access some sort of inventory?' Elk guided.
With the feeling coming from the brain-computer connection I indeed could with a mental click.
// User: [
FemboyDetective77]//
// no items.
// Weapon slot: empty
// Full set of Iron Plate Armor: simple
Reduces all physical damage by: [22] Armour points.
Plate Armor Movement speed in water and muddy terrain: -35%
Iron Attracts lightning based attacks. If grounded Lightning damage: -50%
See, further description… Weight: +20
// User Statistics: baseline of 100 in everything.
'Hmmm… Ok no items and this armour is pretty trash…' Elk mumbled.
'Yeah, I'm already feeling slower in this foot deep water.' I agreed as I took a step further.
A scream came from ahead of me and I saw… a roughly humanoid greenish pixel blob waddling towards me.
''I don't even have a weapon!!'' I jumped backwards from the pixel vomit enemy, not really getting what it even was supposed to be.
'Relax, just doge and you have hands. Punch that monster in the face!' Elk did an empty uppercut on the sofa.
'Ok, ok.' I put my hands up and waited for the slow enemy to walk to me. 'Umm… how do I dodge, Elk?'
The enemy that I realized at the last moments was an ugly fish amphibian monster, as it swiped its long claws at me with surprising speed.
I fell on my back as I tried to dodge the attack.
'Oh, c'mon!! Don't die to the first enemy! And just
dodge to fucking dodge! This isn't a controller game, there's no buttons!
You have to move dammit!' Elk complained on the mental sofa, as I struggled to roll in the foot deep water and dodge two further attacks from the mer-folk.
'It's hard to move in this thing! Ok!' I got some distance and got back up, but the pixel monster was already attacking again.
I blocked with my arms as the three swipe attacks pushed me back a little.
// Current Health: 100HP
// (Armor protection) 22Arm. Damage reduction // (slashing attack) 40DMG
// (Armor protection) 22Arm. Damage reduction // (slashing attack) 40DMG
// (Armor protection) 22Arm. Damage reduction // (slashing attack) 40DMG
// Current Health: 56HP
It hurts!
'Quick! Do a counter!' Elk yelled in my mind.
I didn't know what I was doing but I did a simple punch to the monster's squishy face.
// (Counter attack) +50% DMG /+/ (Critical hit) +200% DMG // (normal attack) 5 DMG
// Enemy: 45.5HP
The pixelated mer-folk backed away slightly and swiped blueish blood pixels off of its face.
'Ok, just ten more normal punches and the thing's dead, or even less if you get more crit hits.' Elk encouraged.
'Yeah, sure…' I was getting slightly winded already.
The mer-folk instead skipped and weaved towards me. I dodged to the right before it even attacked, which got its initiative to redirect its claws at me anyways.
// Current Health: 56HP
// (Armor protection) 22HP Damage reduction // (slashing attack) 40DMG
// Current Health: 38HP
I didn't have the reaction time to counter again, so I just dodged more.
'You have to get the timing right! Wait, just before the monster attacks, there's usually some timing clues. Also if you un-equip the armor you'll dodge faster, but as a beginner just keep it on for now.' Elk had gotten a mental carton of popcorn from somewhere.
The mer-folk readied for an attack again, this time paying attention I saw its dull black pixel eyes flash in red, right before it lunged at me. I got the dodge right this time and got two fits in before backing up.
// (enemy: Enraged) // (normal attack) 5 DMG
// (normal attack) 5 DMG
// Enemy: 35.5HP
'Nice, your getting there…' Elk munched on the imaginary popcorn.
'Hehe… Uhh… what is it doing?' I was waiting for the monster to attack again but it stood in place with its clawed hands in front of it.
A silvery blue flash blinked from the monster's eyes, as damage hit me.
// (Armor Status: Grounded) - 50% DMG // (Lightning scorch) - 60HP
// Current Health: 8HP
The pain was dulled from what I had gone through yesterday, but it still hurt like all hell!
// (Grounded Lightning) 60 DMG
// Enemy: Dead // + 35XP
''Wait what?'' I looked back at the monster that now dissolved into dark pixels.
'Oh!
That'll probably get some people angry…' Elk flashed a moment of surprise but got back to lounging immediately.
''What just happened? Did the attack actually bounce back? Why the fuck does the first enemy have
lightning magic!?'' I walked to where the monster had been just a second ago.- No drops.
'Relax, Oscar. This was planned this way to make some of the try-hards die early, or at least think twice about the rest of the game. Like I said,
Bob is a
try-hard and an asshole…' Elk explained, reclining on the sofa.
'Well ummm… ok? How do I heal?' I didn't really get what Elk was talking about.
'I guess we need to find that out. Let's see if there's anything in this room before moving forwards.' Elk shrugged.
Pixelated reflections moved sporadically as I did a quick search through the water floored cave chamber.
''Aha, what's this?''
// Flint stone (x2) (crafting item)
'Ok, let's move. You're taking probably twice as long as everyone else.' Elk shook its head in disappointment.
'Hey! I'm playing this game for the first time! Cut some slack!' I moved to the next tight crack in the cave wall and continued.
'
So is everyone else? I make a new game for
every Friday's Game night.' Elk jabbed.
'
Fine, fine. Well this is the first time I play a
Souls-like, ok?...
whatever…' I fell into a rhythmic step, as I went and searched a way forward in the dark crevasse.
Now there was light coming from the end of the way forward and the faint orchestral music kicked in.
'Watch your steps, Oscar…'
'Huh?' I got to the edge of the cave, the blinding light, stinging my eyes as I stopped right before a massive fall into the abyss.
''Holy shit!'' I backed off, slipping pixely rocks to fall down into the void below, pixels getting smaller until they disappear.
'Like I said,
Bob's an asshole.' Elk muttered.
I took a better look outside, seeing a rough pixelated floating island slightly below the caves drop off. Purple and blues dominated the sky and the horizon, and it all was barely identifiable as such, because of the chunky blocks of pixels.
''Where are we?'' I looked around what little I was-…
A giant abstract eye drawing glowed above in muted red, being distinctly not pixelated, it looked surreal.
'We-ee-eird… Well? Is this a dead end?' I tried to not fall with the loose ruble.
'I think I saw a ledge to the left there…' Elk noted.
And sure enough there was a pixelated narrow rock ledge that I hadn't first seen with the lack of detail.
Shimmying around the sharp corner of the crack in the cliff-face and on to the barely foot wide ledge that led upwards with miss-matched foot holds and occasional jumps.
As I tried clearing the climb, I was constantly swepped by the wind, nearly tripping me up, but I made it up to the platow of muted blue pixel grass.
'Huh, surprisingly easy.
I thought some birds or a dragon was going to agro or something…' Elk mumbled before getting up from the sofa to get another carton of popcorn from a vendor with a popcorn hat.
'Wait
where did all that come from, Elk!?' I focussed on all the things Elk had somehow gotten into my mind.
'Oh,
this~? Just some things I got from the
larger me~, when I checked the memory banks.' Elk explained while giving the vendor an empty nickel in exchange for the popcorn. '
Keep the change~.' Elk winked at the popcorn vendor, who's blank face grew heart eyes at the mecha-god.
'
The pleasure's mine. //[elk-777773/o]//' The vendor nodded, while the heart eyes remained.
... Ignoring that, I focused on the other thing Elk mentioned. 'Did you get any answers on that?' I had forgotten the whole of yesterday for a long second- 'The pain, the ghosts… maybe it was better I forgot that…'
'Well, yeah… I was
trying to not mention yesterday… get you to
relax properly. But on the topic I did find that there's
something going on, on the Lunar bio-servers. The deleted memories have been deleted through them, but there's never been any executive orders to do so from the Earth's servers…' Elk started to munch on the new carton.
'
But that's huge!! What if a hacker has gotten into the server!...
Wait, you have
bio-servers?' I was completely distracted from the pixelated world around me with its sky eye and the swirling purple clouds with the hundreds more floating islands.
'Yeah, bio-servers work surprisingly better on Luna, than anywhere else. I haven't pinpointed it down, but do to pressure levels and low-g-'
'You, have,
bio-servers!! You've made those illegal yourself!!
What the fuck?' I questioned Elk, ignoring the group of enemies coming in my direction.
'No, I made it illegal to
connect a bio-server to the internet, because the amount of data and therefore moderation, would skyrocket.
I didn't make them outright
illegal to have and operate if they're not connected. I use them to store vast amounts of my memory on and to help stimulate my alternative physics engines.' Elk elaborated with dismissive hoof gestures. '
Also, watch out, there are three enemies coming.'
'Fine,
I'll deal with those first!! What are people going to do with a bio-server that can't be even connected to the internet? Only
you would have any real use for them.' I turned to face the three enemies.
Twisted humanoid things trying to be humans would be the best description for them. Two of them looked like squires, carrying all sorts of things on them, while the one in the middle looked like an arch-mage or something. All had pale blue skin, same as the grass.
I readied my stance.
''Greetings, new Awoken!'' The one in red/black mage robes said, their face being hidden by their hood, say, except their skeletal lower jaw. Twisting symbols written on strips of leather, wrapped their clothes together, while an assortment of bead-necklaces and bracelets hung loose on every joint of their body.
''Umh, hello?'' I didn't think this was an NPC, with how '
enemy-like' they looked.
''Ah, good. The Awoken, can understand us,
good, good!'' The mage rubbed their skeletal hands together.
''So, what is this place?'' I relaxed my stance.
''Ah?
A curious one. How splendidly good!'' The mage rasped. ''These lands are called mostly as the
Veil. The islands you see here were once the battleground of the
Titans… still are, as well as it is our
ceaseless prison. All
Awoken like you and I can
ascend to be the next Titans and
kill the accursed symbol-!!' the mage suddenly raised one of their pale fingers to point at the surreal eye symbol above. '-that
dare block the way into the
afterlife. It helds us as prisoners here,
like a fake limbo. This place shouldn't be.-
Even when we die here, we
reawaken… the only release is to fall into the void below, but that's no afterlife,
I can tell you that much…'' It shook its head in dismay.
''Oh wow, talk about
depressing. Ok, so how can I level up? I mean- '
ascend' ?'' I put a bit of roleplay to my voice.
''
Curious one indeed. I'm here to
guide you to do just that.
I'm but a humble mage~, no name to myself, but I held the
information and the
Orb of Location,- that is how I have found you,
curious one. We should relocate to my hold for now, much safer there than out here,-
close to the edge…'' The mage noded to itself and gestured to follow as the three set out to walk at a rapid pace away from the edge of the island.
'
Should I follow?' I asked.
'Yeah, sure.
Probably another trap, or it's all false flags. *Noms*-
Bob's an asshole either way…'' Elk fiddled with a popcorn kernel before popping it in its empty maw.
'Uh… whatever, I'll follow then.' I didn't want to get left behind.
