It's not even my birthday yet, but I am blown away by the number of cards I have already received. My mailbox was filled multiple days in a row! I'm especially touched by people who just had my address on hand still and thought to send me a birthday card. Thank you so much!

Hi all. I’m about to be 19 in a few weeks. I’m being treated for bipolar 1 and OCD. I’m on effexor, tegretol, and seroquel (I had the rare lamictal allergy). I’m doing incredibly well—I have a stable relationship of a year and a half, get along well with my parents, and I’m a great student in college for biochemistry. Keep this in mind; I am a stable young woman.
I tried to register for Adma Biocenters near my house to start donating plasma there instead of my usual CSL. CSL is too far away and uses up a lot of gas, and I’m keeping my younger sibling this summer, and don’t get off from that until 3 or 4 each day. My mother works right across the street from Adma, so it’d be easy for me to drop my brother with her as she’s going home, and then go over to donate. But I have to register for Adma first. So two days ago, I went to register. It was 4:58 when I walked in and 5:02 by the time someone spoke to me. She said they don’t accept new donors after 5pm. I went home disgruntled because their website clearly stated to come 90 minutes minimum before close and I was there 120 minutes prior, but politely vowed to come back the next day. So I did. I was prepped that it could be a 2hr wait. I ended up getting seen for my physical in about 30 minutes or less—it was really fast, but I wasn’t paying attention either. The vitals receptionist said the nurse would have to do the physical before vitals since I mentioned being on medications. So the nurse gets me in the room—she apologizes because she’s the only nurse on staff instead of the usual 2–but I’m polite and say it’s no problem for me. I tell her what I’m taking and she goes quiet. I ask what’s wrong and she says I take three medications, and the rules require a written letter of approval to donate plasma if you take three or more prescription medications. Because the med levels will decrease during plasmapheresis, I need approval. I’m not dumb—seems fair enough. She checks through her computer files to make sure and confirms and says she’ll print the request form I’ll need to send to my psychiatrist. I’m so embarrassed and begin to tear up as I say “gosh, she’ll probably charge me for this form, and the whole reason Im here is because I need money.” And the nurse is just backpedaling, saying “I’m sorry, I promise it’ll be okay, your doctor will fill it out and it’ll be alright.” I told her it wasn’t her fault and that I know she’s just doing her job and she appreciated the understanding, but was still trying to apologize. I repeated to her that I didn’t blame her at all. So I go out to my car, email the form to my psych. And then I sit there. And I look online. Couldn’t find anything about three or more medications. Instead I found accounts here, and NIH.org info saying anyone with bipolar must be declared mentally stable by a doctor to donate. The nurse lied to spare my feelings. But oh man, are they hurt. Im a stable adult. I’m a functional young woman trying to make money to support myself and pay my bills. It hurts me to know all I will ever be to some is my illness. Like I cannot make my own decisions safely. I cried to my dad about it, but I’m just going to keep my head up and hope for the best. My psychiatrist knows I donated at CSL—who NEVER required this form of approval. Nonetheless, I know she’ll approve it. It just hurt me.
Edit: Also mad they wasted my time. They handed me a huge booklet of info and nothing about mental conditions was mentioned. CSL knew what I took and why and didn’t care or require approval.

He stares at her as Keya’s voice starts to slowly grow louder “I know you have people who can deal with this. This is supposed to be a priority line, as well!” her tone was still flatter than it should be, it was loud but lacked inflection giving it a false impression of cold anger.
“We have arranged previous protocols for similar situations”
“You can’t possibly be so unwise as to not be ready for nonstandard behavior”
“Please find someone with authority or at least knowledge of the situation”
“Yes I am the-”
“I am very much aware of the limitations of our deal, I am asking about a similar but new situation”
“The chief of an exterminator precinct is calling you because an endangered exotic animal requires some form of acceptable solution. I am calling you despite a clear lack of protocols in this specific situation. I am calling you because I have no real solutions and if there’s one species, one government left in this brahking galaxy that CARES it’s you so please, please give me something, ANYTHING” it was disturbing, incredibly so, to watch her inflection just waver and shift like that.
“Very well, I will put you on speakers” finally a reprieve from hearing a one-sided conversation, Keya sets down her holopad in the table at the center of the couches. Santos comes closer, still with one of the hensa snugly stuck inside his shirt while Orran slowly walks over to look, but he doesn’t sit, still holding the female protectively.
In the screen is another human, she is dressed in a very plain black suit with a necktie that’s been loosened and her short hair is disheveled. Clearly, Keya’s conversation had managed to stress her out. The dark-skinned woman scans her light blue eyes through the three visible people across from the call, her direct sight quickly stopping on the small beast in Orran’s grasp “They’re like tiny panthers” she says, softly
After a few more moments she continues “Alright, call me Janice. As I’ve told your boss” she says, presumably trying to aim her gaze at Santos, which isn’t quite possible through a video call “We might have a good solution. But that’s a maybe on the good solution, depends on if I can call on people here. And we have an okay solution, but that depends on what you’re willing to do, Mister…”
At that, the yotul recognizes it’s his turn to speak “Orran, my name is Orran”
“Mister Orran. So, here are the two possible solutions. The worst of them is to simply arrange a transfer for them to Leirn, but that is not an optimal solution. Not only would it take time, as we don’t currently have the logistic means to expedite transport in official vessels and we do not have the funds to find a quick and safe civilian willing to make the trip, we currently have no ongoing deals with the planetary government regarding fauna returns”
“I’m sure I could find a good transport to get there, ma’am.” Orran interrupts “I got them here, I can get them back if I need to”
“That might be true” the woman on the video continues, waving dismissively as she visibly slumps down on the seat “But we still have no official deals with their government regarding wildlife rescues. We have ongoing negotiations but nothing concrete, so in order to get your little fuzzballs over there we’d need to divert personnel we do not have available at the moment to secure a proper location, hopefully a wildlife shelter or similar”
“I could-” Orran tries but he’s interrupted
“Yes, you could go and uproot the entirety of your life again for the sake of those. Which is what we’d ask of you in this case, the best we could do for this worst-case scenario is some bureaucratic facilitation for your travel.” then she moves closer to the camera and puts her elbows on, presumably, the desk and rests her chin on her hands “But we might have a better solution”
“You better not be about to rope this man into some weird quasi-legal scheme” Santos interrupts “Your track record has been real spotty when dealing with anything at this scale”
Janice sighs, rubbing her eyes as she pulls a holopad off from the side “Yes, yes I know. You would fucking know wouldn’t you, Mr. Exterminator. But no, no, the plan is to take advantage of an ongoing research project to find far safer shelter right here on Venlil Prime.” she returns to her slacked pose as she brings her pad up with her, sharing her attention between the two “There’s a variety of projects researching the possible introduction of new species to this planet to increase the resilience of the biomes near the core of the habitable zone, an offshoot of the Cradle restoration research, as well as a bit of a hare-brained little project researching the feasibility of shipboard pets to increase soldier morale” she offers a hand to the camera “We can have your hensa housed in the facilities of any of such projects. This way we don’t need to redirect any voidborne assets, which as you know are all completely committed to the ongoing war, and you don’t need to give up your life here, Mr. Orran”
Santos turns to watch the yotul, who now has a contemplative look. It was always weird when he realized he could read alien expressions that well, a closed eye with the head slightly tilted the same direction and both ears flat towards the same direction read the exact same way as a human looking upwards in thought, apparently he’d grown accustomed to them very much. “And what would being housed here require, and how would they be treated”
Janice takes a deep breath, and can be seen pulling a second holopad from somewhere offscreen “IF I can make this work, and this is an if because it depends on finding a receptive project lead, for now they’d just be housed in the animal shelters those projects have for their studies. Currently the studies are only observational in how they relate to local species, with periodic medical checkups, being held in a few biome-isolation facilities. Should they prove suitable for the goals, and hell that depends on the projects being feasible to begin with, then they’ll be added to acclimated breeding programs.”
Orran looks down at the heavy female on his arms, then looks back at the screen “And should they not be?”
Janice grins “That’s the trick. At that point the UN will have taken over responsibility for them, and now they have an endangered species on hand and a million and one laws on how to treat them. So they’ll be forced to keep them in a wildlife shelter until they can be safely relocated to their natural environment. Which is something that will likely only happen after the end of the war given how bureaucracy works” then she looks down at the holopads and types something down in one of them “And if the war takes longer than that to end, I don’t think any of us will be around to worry anymore, so”
“Isn’t that a bit pessimistic” Santos adds with a raised eyebrow
“You would be, sitting here in this chair” she retorts
He looks at Orran, ultimately the choice is his, given it’s both his little creatures and his life in the line. The yotul spends a few moments thinking “Then please see what you can do. How long until we have an answer?”
“Hah!” Janice exclaims triumphantly, startling all three “I wouldn’t be in this job if I couldn’t multitask this well. I already have an answer, seems like the local fauna reintroduction project has shown interest. Can’t have only one pestkiller species in the same niche, it seems they want to have some competition to keep populations controlled or something” she still has a wide smile when she directly addresses Orran “If that project pans out, your kitties’ descendants will wind up in a competitive space with ours. But that’s for multiple generations from now, it seems. Currently, those two would wind up in an observation shelter to see how they interact with a population of voidpins as well as how they interact with terran cats. Is that acceptable or should I try to find another project?”
At that Orran laughs lightly “Ooh, nightside? That’d be perfect, most hensa are twilight creatures but nightweavers are nocturnal, that’d be the best for them” he gently caresses the feline in his arms “Hear that Lodestar? You get to have some darkness again”
Janice nods on the screen “Alright, then… Let’s see… Oh, oooh that’s convenient” she is tapping at the holopad “How much time do you need to prepare them for a trip? Would you like to come along for the handoff? CnT Freight -that’s an unfortunate name- seems to have a pickup of carbon in the next town over for us, we can have someone take advantage of the trip and come pick your kitties up”
Santos tilts his head to the side “Carbon? That might be over in Long Cliff if I remember the surrounding towns correctly. That’s almost a two hour trip”
Janice nods “Yep. I’ve sent a message to that project’s lead, they’ll get someone in our already-scheduled resource pickup trip and they’ll meet up with you. But we’re working with already existing schedules so… They should be over there in, let’s see… Fifteen hours or so” she takes a deep breath “So if that’ll be all? I got more calls in the queue”
“This will be enough” Keya’s voice is still weird
And with that the other human unceremoniously ends the call “That’ll be around three claws, Orran” Santos offers “I hope you don’t mind if we wait over here?”
The yotul is surprised, taking a step back “W-wait here? Why?”
Santos sighs “Three things. You already panicked once, and fled an entire planet over it” he gives Orran a side glance, which now that he thinks about it wouldn’t read the same for an alien would it? “Don’t want to risk you panicking again and messing yourself up”
Orran looks sheepish for a moment “Second, I want to have a look outside for some things. This place was the location of something very suspicious a few paws ago and this is the only chance I have to properly look for evidence around here” he gives the yotul a shrug “None of it is your fault, to clarify. I just want to figure out where that nixa came from”
And finally, he stands up and grabs Keya by the shoulders “And third, this woman did not sleep and is five seconds away from a mental breakdown” he lifts her off the ground with great effort, takes a couple of steps to the side and forcibly shoves her into the largest couch “And I want her to try to get a full rest before we need to deal with the delivery, because we will invariably be involved”
Despite the annoyed position of her ears and thrashing tail, Keya doesn’t move from the position she’s been put into “Santos, I’m fine”
“No you’re not, you started screaming an hour into your sleep cycle and never went back to bed. Try to get some sleep, I’ll be here” he turns over to Orran “Yes, I’m taking a bit of advantage of your situation, I’m sorry.”
If the yotul had eyebrows, he’d be raising one of them right now “I take it this isn’t a normal situation. If that’s why you need to stay around it’s fine.” he takes a deep breath “Turns out I owe her, apparently, so consider yourselves guests”
And so they waited. It did not take long for Keya to fall asleep, meanwhile Santos sat down on the couch and started fiddling with his holopad. It wasn't a random distraction, however, as he was reviewing the calls on Orran’s little project. Maybe it was just human pareidolia speaking, but something about the calls had been nagging him. It did eat at him doing this to Orran, however. The man was already stressed out enough as it was, and here he was taking complete advantage of what is essentially a hostage situation so his boss could sneak some sleep during a work shift.
As the hours passed he'd periodically get pulled out of his work as he watched Orran come and go, doing whatever his job was. Turns out an agriculturalist’s job also involves a lot of paperwork, it seems, for the man at some point had three holopads out doing who knows what, presumably data comparison. Himself, he eventually found what his instinct had been nagging him about. All of the calls on those little beasts, aside from the very first, were not made from within Blackriver. If his understanding of comms-codes in this planet was right, and if he wasn’t just seeing patterns where they did not exist, those anonymous calls were all from a number in a nearby town. But before he could start making more connections he heard something he was hoping not to hear. He hears Keya’s breath quickening.
He quickly sets down his pad and, after a bit of effort, manages to dislodge the two alien felines that had decided his lap was the correct place for a nap. Then he heads over to Keya and kneels down beside her, causing Orran to focus on him. “Don’t do anything, Orran” he instructs
“What? What’s going on?” he sounds worried, as he should be
“I was hoping she’d wake up to a normal nightmare but it seems like it’s a bad one again” he stares at his boss, whose breathing is getting faster and faster. She opens her mouth and starts making a noise.
Orran steps closer “Shouldn’t you wake her up?”
It’s now that Keya starts screaming, familiar screams of fear “No, not yet. Wake her up too early and she’s going to be in a state of panic for multiple claws.” Keya’s screams start getting worse as she grabs at the couch and digs her claws in, her legs and tail thrashing wildly as if she were running. And suddenly her creaming stops with a choked noise as she brings her hands up to her chest.
Orran takes a step back as the next stage of Keya’s nightmare makes itself manifest in her noises, a choked scream that brought a chill down his spine, a scream that was eerily reminiscent of the sounds he’d heard in an ‘instructional’ video about the greys a long time ago. “Wake her up too late and she’s not going to have any of her emotions left” the human comments, as the venlil frantically claws at her own chest.
She screams for just a little while longer, until Santos forcibly puts his hand over her chest “Boss, I’m here” he says with an authoritative voice “The only predator in this room is me, listen to my voice” he puts pressure in her chest “You’re alive, listen to me” he lowers his body closer to her “Wake up and listen”
The distressed hensa had been staring up at the venlil from the ground, emitting a low, bassy growl all this time in a sign of worry. But when Keya sits up suddenly they both run back behind Orran “I… Am awake” she says mechanically.
Santos sighs, stares at her for a while, then stands up and offers his hand. Keya ignores him and stands up, looking around the house “Cold bastard woke up this time, eh?”
Santos and Orran watch as Keya ignores the question as she looks around, eyes seemingly staring off into the distance. She finally stops “Yes” and then turns her entire body towards a small desk near the front door, and turns her head to face it.
Santos raises an eyebrow at her motion, and he notices Orran’s tail started lightly thumping on the floor and his body was shaking slightly. He’d seen people getting unnerved at the cold bastard, but he had the feeling that if he were a human right now he’d be sweating bullets. He follows the direction Keya is facing, that was such a blatantly human motion she had performed it was obvious what she intended, and sees something.
“Haven’t seen a proper paper letter in a long, long time” he comments a technical lie, a few seconds after Orran had moved to pick up said letter from the desk and shove it into a drawer. But he had already seen what Keya wanted him to.
“Y-yeah I’m… Still fond of some traditional things” the man says, still looking nervous.
He takes a deep breath. He’d already seen it, in the letter, the mark of three crossed leaves. “Alright… Me and Keya are going to go outside to check something. And when we come back, you’re going to tell me the truth, right?” he stares directly at Orran
“What do you-”
“AFTER we’re back” he interrupts “Because this is either nothing worth worrying about, or you were saved from death by the power of ignorance” but he doesn’t let Orran answer as he and Keya step out into the yard.
He looks around at the yard, already predicting this would be a difficult mission. A physical letter with a familiar symbol, Orran mentioned he had a way to bring his felines to this planet and could use it as a way out, those were carnivores as far as he knew so he had to get food somewhere, and the man had those kept in here since before humanity’s first contact so it wasn’t some cloned meat he was using.
Keya grabs his shoulder and turns him towards the shed, every house in this place has the same general structure, including the shed in the backyard. The two of them start heading over there and study it. Those are wooden windows, closed, barring any sight from the inside and the front door had a lock in it, but it was slightly ajar. He looks at Keya, who seems to not notice his stare, and then gently opens the door.
The light from the outside streams in, and the sight is somewhat heart wrenching. This was, at some point, pretty much a cat house. There were shelves along the walls with nothing in them for them animals to walk about, wooden towers and other acrobatic toys, there were plastic toys scattered around and most tellingly some bowls on the ground. He kneels beside the bowls, there’s a tiny scattering of kibble indicating which ones were likely kibble and which ones were likely water, but they were marked with the same signs as the rest of the toys and furniture, deep marks of a nixa’s claws.
“Here” Keya’s toneless voice calls him out, and as he arrives he finds the proof of what he expected. There’s a rather crude metal box sitting there, full of scratch marks and bloodstains, inspecting it closer he finds tufts of dark fur and… Fabric.
Before he can inspect closer Keya hands him something- A plastic bag “Always prepared aren’t you?” he kneels closer to look at it, it’s definitely fabric, torn fabric in fact, with a fragment of the nixa’s claw attached to it. Gingerly he puts it in the plastic bag, looking at it.
“It is not good for my mental health, but it is useful in situations like those” Keya offers, before turning to the door to leave.
Santos stands up and takes a deep breath. Those calls all came from outside, and everything’s starting to make sense. He speeds up to move ahead of Keya as they enter Orran’s house, to find the yotul sitting on a couch, seemingly staring at something but in truth his eyes were distant in thought. “Alright, Orran. The first question, where did you get food for your hensa?”
Orran nearly jumps out of his skin, before turning an eye to Santos “I… I have an offworld contact. They, uhm… They can get some stuff shipped from Leirn for me”
Santos nods, and sits beside the man. Keya, on the other hand, walks behind him and simply looms over, causing the agriculturalist to shrink “Next question. Who brought you here?”
“It… It was the same people”
He crosses his arms “I’m going to take a wild guess and say that your hensa have suddenly decided that they don’t want to leave the house anymore since a few days, I mean, paws ago, right?”
At that Orran gasps “How did you know?”
He leans back on the couch “Your little ones saved your life, just so you know. Whoever it is you’ve got your trip, and the food from… You still owe them, right? And they’re the kind that comes collect” he’s looking at the ceiling right now
“C-collect? What do you mean?” he can see Orran trembling in his periphery
“Fifty seven of the calls on your hensa were from outside town” he turns his head slightly to give Orran a side-eyed stare “And we figured out where whoever it was dropped a very angry and very hungry nightside predator a few paws ago. You know, at the same point in time where I can only imagine your little friends stopped going to their playground out back”
“Wait” Orran seems frozen “That… That was because…”
Santos shrugs “I don’t know who they are. I doubt they’d like it if you talked, so i’m not asking. I’m just going to ask, how much do you owe them?”
The yotul looks down “Five hundred and twelve thousand credits… But I’ve been paying, I swear-” he grabs at Santos’ arm
“Chill out” he takes a deep breath “None of us are related to them in any way, before you get the wrong impression”
“It should be doable” Keya has brought up her datapad, causing the other two to look up at her “It is possible that I can organize a donation drive able to reach the nearby towns. Coupled with a secondary source I have available it is plausible acquire the amount of credits to clear his debt”
Orran stands up quickly in surprise “Y-you’d do that for-”
“Those people have shown themselves capable of causing serious collateral in their attempts at punishment and have shown to be a threat to the safety of the town.” she continues with a toneless voice “You, also, are part of this town. A group capable of smuggling contraband across planets is not a group we are capable of protecting the town from, therefore, the only measure left is appeasement.” she explains like it was a lecture, causing Orran’s ears to droop.
“The condition of this aid is as follows. You will hand over that letter, as I recognize it is their method of contacting you. You will, also, follow the humans to wherever the delivery will take place and you will only return to this town once I have contacted you to do so and you have paid your debts.” she turns her head sideways to direct one of her eyes at the yotul, he takes a step back cowering from the icy stare in a way Santos could never cause “If they make any further attempts at you, they will not endanger this town”
Santos sighs “Yeah, that looks like a wise choice” he pats Orran gently on the shoulder “I know the cold bastard is a lot but that’s a good plan. We’ll help you out, get your kitties a safe new home and nobody gets hurt”
To say the mood in the residence was soured by the experience was an understatement. And yet they were forced to wait even further in the collective company, Santos gently trying to coax some unrelated small talk out of Orran for the sake of the man’s sanity while he could not keep himself from continually building up more and more stress as he watched Keya silently stare down at her datapad nearly motionless.
Ultimately, Santos breaks the stress spiral by convincing the yotul to prepare for the trip. The lack of clothing articles, he noticed, made packing very much easier than it would be for a human. But a few cleaning articles, the remaining kibble for the hensa, a carrier cage that was uncleverly hidden under the bed and a few more moments spent preparing some travel snacks and there’s a knock on the front door.
Who’s behind the door is a distressingly short little Nevok, sent as the person to pick up the hensa. It took a bit of convincing, but under the cold gaze of Keya the woman eventually relents to allow Orran to accompany his animals, just to facilitate the handoff and to ensure the team’s knowledge of them is correct.
Santos and Keya see the two off, but as they return to the car that had been waiting for them for hours, she stops him. She opens the driver’s seat and points him there, takes the back seat herself and immediately brings out her datapad. Santos looks at the strange car, bites down his lower lip in thought and sighs. There’s no use discussing with the cold bastard.

Hi, I want to start this off saying that english isn’t my first language, so I apologize for some mistakes. So recently I’ve been diagnosed with Agoraphobia. I’ve already been seeing a therapist for about 5/6 years cause of anxiety and depression, but about a year ago, I went to college. It was a bust because it was far from home, I’ve always been in schools close to home and never strayed away. So in the first two weeks of college I was awful, I had full blown panic attacks cause I was getting home later than I wanted because the bus was late and such things. I couldn’t handle it and I left college, after that it was months of just depression episodes. Couldn’t leave the bed, couldn’t eat, couldn’t look at my parents cause the pain of disappointing them was crushing me. They took to see my therapist regularly after that, I’m so grateful for them and couldn’t imagine a better support system. Anyways I’ve been making progress, my agoraphobia isn’t severe, if anything it’s mild. Recently I’ve been going to some classes to get used to a routine out of the house, it’s close to home so it’s not such a big adjustment. I’m doing this as practice since I’m planning on applying to college again this year, to colleges near home this time. But I admit, it’s rough, I’ve been trying to cope and my mom has been a huge help, my sisters helps me stay on my toes to not give up on myself so easily, but still it’s me going through this and I could use some help with ways to cope. Sometimes very frequently and then she doesn't for a couple of weeks. But multiple times a month. There are times when she's been on a new blanket at least 7x in one week. We even put a new litter box in the room but she looks at it and doesn’t use it. I spray non-marking spray but it doesn’t work. I have tried UTI medicine, UTI food, more litter boxes, and covering the bed. My family wants to give her to the shelter, and I really don’t know what to do. Hazel also really doesn’t like humans, she runs away whenever we get near her. I don’t understand because she was born in this house and has 3 other siblings who are totally fine with us. She doesn't let us near her which makes it very hard for us to take her to the vet. The last time I did was 1-2 years ago for this exact problem but they unfortunately quoted me too much to run some tests (I was suspecting UTI) and I did not have the money to go through with it. After that vet visit, I was unable to go neasee her for a very long time. She does not seem to have any other issues though, she plays, eats, drinks, sleeps just fine, and never shows any discomfort. I recently relapsed after 2 months sober (and nearly 2 years sober before that). I had a sexual advance at work which upset me.
It started with a visit to a brewery where I had three drinks and thought it would be fine. That same evening I snuck away to Kroger and bought more.
I began drinking 10-20 drink servings a day, for two weeks or so (mind you the strongest was 8% seltzecider but still. I was drinking the full-sized boxes of the weaker seltzer in one-two days, plus some more)
First off, how screwed am I? This wasn't my first sort of behavior doing this, but I'm also in the throes of the anxieties of withdrawal and am convinced I'm going to die any second.
The night terrors, high BP, and palpitations were terrible day one, but I'm nearly back to normal (with only an elevated heart rate hovering around 80-110 at rest give or take stress) now. My symptoms are getting better day by day, but it's still a frightening hell.
It reached the point where I stepped into a rehab and they recommended a weekly program, but advised that my withdrawal did not seem to the extent that I'd need to stay with them in-house.
Yall see all of that stress? My fatalism? This is what you get after a relapse; please do not let prior fears fade and think "a couple drinks will be fine". It likely wont.
I'm genuinely curious how bad you all think this is/how extreme this is, or if I'm making more of drinking (admittedly quite a lot) of seltzer and beer.
(And yes. I'm scheduling with all my doctors, and can only hope they take me seriously)(and yes I have severe health anxiety and a death phobia, I'm working on it)

First time posting so hopefully I can stay coherent. Sorry it's pretty long. My husband (37m) and I (35f) have been married for nearly 15 years, together for almost 17. We've always had an extremely stable relationship, but struggled financially. We couldn't really afford to live where we were, but made it work. He ended up getting a great job, but he worked 16 hour days and after we had kids it really bothered him that he was away so much. We decided to sell our house and move somewhere cheaper, but kept getting priced out of the market. He suggested we move across the country and after looking at houses we decided to go for it. We bought a run down repossessed house that we could buy outright and fix up ourselves. The plan was to both get regular 40hr a week jobs since our costs were lower and we could spend more time together as a family. The first year I got a full time job, but my hours crept up to over 56 a week. Then he started his own business where he could work opposite me since we couldn't find childcare. Then COVID hit and I got laid off. He was able to keep working so we did ok, but he started working less and less and started roping me into working for him more and more. It's not work I've ever been comfortable or good at doing. Now he's pretty much home all the time but doesn't help out at all, the house is still unfinished, but it's not a high enough priority. I'm doing all the cooking, cleaning and childcare as well as whatever renos I can do myself. I found a great part time job in the mornings, but had to leave since I couldn't rely on him to be home, and regularly had to get my oldest to babysit the youngest (when they weren't in school) I also had to recently turn down an incredible job because I couldn't find childcare (no daycares in town at all) and I couldn't rely on him to take care of the house. This has been a growing issue since we've moved, but it's still been tolerable. Fast forward to the last few months. Since we moved I've lost most of the friends I left behind and have not made any since, it's been affecting my mental health, but when I bring it up he just thinks I should join a book club or something. He's always been a bit uncomfortable talking about mental health especially any suggestions of therapy, but seemed understanding in the past. Our oldest has also come out as non-binary. Now he's always been accepting of trans persons and the whole LGBTQIA2S+ community, a large portion of my friends fit into it myself included and it's never been an issue. Now he's going off on these terrible transphobic rants. (Luckily not in front of our kids) and I've been working to figure out what his issue is and educate him on it. Our relationship has obviously been strained for the last few years, but I feel like a switch has flipped and I'm out of my depth. I feel like all I can think about are the problems we've had over the years. I think he's just scared, but I don't know if it's something we can get over. I want to just leave, but I'll basically be out with no job, no money, no friends, and 3 kids I'm just wondering if I should try to get him into therapy with me or just leave?
Tldr: my husband has changed his work ethics and his views on LGBTQ+ issues and it's affecting our family. Should I ask for a divorce?

I’ve lived at house for nearly 4 years and nearly a year ago a new neighbour moved in with a bunch of kids. We didn’t really interact with each other until the start of the year (about 6ish months ago) when their kids start randomly appearing at the front of my house trying to get in through my front door or the window or I hear them on my kids swing-set or on my kids bikes at the back of my house. I don’t really mind if they are playing with my kid, if they asked and if their parents agreed to it too.
I’ve tried talking to the kids asking if they asked their parents if they are allowed to and they flat out lie and say yes when the parent didn’t even know they snuck out. So we exchanged numbers with parents and i send the kids back and I tell them ask their parents to send me a text if it’s ok for them to come over and play.
This still hasn’t stopped them from coming over randomly. They still come over even more so. Especially when I’m not home and the one of then neighbours that I’m good friends with tells me that the kids come over my place on a daily when I’m gone to work and my kids are at school

I (26f) have a great aunt, M, who is in her 60's I think and a son, J, in his 40's. She has another son who is mentally handicapped. And they have 3 out of 6 of J's kids, 3 of her nephews kids, and my niece living with her. My niece went through a traumatic event and is with her until my sister can find housing near where my niece wants to be. My sister (32f) and I drove the 2 hours to go see her daughter, but M and J were not there. All of the kids were. Only one of the kids is 18 and she was not involved in any of this. There is a 13 year old girl, O, there that honestly she acts like a wannabe gangster. She acts tough and every time she had seen me in the last 5 years had called me a cow... so I don't really want anything to do with her to begin with. Anyways we got there and my nerves were already shot and I hadn't eaten all day which had made it so much worse. I had tried to talk to my niece and O kept trying to interrupt and pull my niece away from me and the caught a whole attitude when my niece stayed with me. Then I had went outside because it is beyond chaotic in that house. While I was walking away O in a snobby voice said bye, and I had responded that I was going to smoke I wasn't going anywhere. I'll admit it was sharper than intended. Well we were told to wait in my car. When M and J pulled in M jerked the car to a stop, called my sister inside, and told J to "handle me." Instead of asking what my deal was which I would have said sorry to, J starts screaming at me to get in my car and that those kids deserve respect. Then J, O, and all of the other kids accept the 18 year old begin flipping me off every time they walk by my car. O keeps running her mouth telling me to take my car off the property and shut my door and what not. When we got home I was honestly heart broken. I grew up around these people and I ended up blocking all of them, except my niece. I know I'm going to get an earful come Monday, but I just want to make sure, AITAH?

This is a bit long so I’ll try to break this up into digestible parts. warning
My mom (64F) and stepdad (68M) met when they went to college (she was a freshman and he was a senior). They didn’t really date and she dropped out of the private college and went to a community college for nursing. They went on with their lives. She met and dated my dad and my dad was absent. My mom fully raised me alone. We moved to Florida from Virginia when I was 7 years old to be near my grandparents while my mom worked as a full time nurse (on call peeps would know). My relationship with my absent dad has affected me and how I have relationship with men in my life.
When I was going to college, my mom had a traveling nurse job in Massachusetts. My grandparents bought me plane ticket from Florida to Massachusetts for my spring break trip. And that’s where I met my moms new boyfriend. She found out he lived in Georgia and after she asked him to visit, he quit his CPA job and moved all of his stuff to Massachusetts. I was going through a depressing post breakup time and needed my mom. He hated and resented any time I was there. He took me around Boston (my fave city) and I had a great time, but felt something was off. My mom didn’t come because she had to work. I remember him barely talking to me the entire time. I remember we went back to the house and he told my mom he felt he was babysitting me. When I came back to Florida, I was so severely depressed from my breakup, college, and now losing my other parent, I dropped out of school after I lied to my mom I wasn’t passing (out of depression of leaving my school because she wouldn’t pay if I switched majors). And he’d use that against me and made me feel like I wasn’t anything.
I had no money, no job, an apartment I couldn’t afford. My mom let me stay in a place she was renting. I was told I needed a job from someone who didn’t have one. I thought I wasn’t enough or a good daughter anymore. I was compared to his brothers daughters. Two months into their relationship, they got married (she proposed). And then married two years later. The same year they got engaged, I met my boyfriend of 6.5 years now.
My stepdad has been very good to my mom and has treated her better than any man she dated before had. Almost to a sickening and smothering way. He would act like a saint to my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. I would come back to Florida, tell my family what I witnessed with him and was told “allow your mom to be happy,” “stop being so selfish.” My mom and stepdad would stop coming to things, cancel at the most painful last minute when things were ruined if they didn’t come, or come late to the point I’d miss my mom on holidays. If my mom and I talk about memories, he’s completely not there and on his phone. He checks out when the conversation isn’t about him. If I speak to my mother (in person/on the phone) he’s right there and hears everything. He gloats all the expensive things they do together but complain if I have a birthday dinner.
My family saw it on Christmas two years ago and my aunt called my step dad out on not working when my mom was working herself to death. He got very defensive and blamed me for his anxiety for buying a house with my boyfriend (we are both in my late 20s) and my aunt for having a troubled past and clawed her way out. He was very cruel and used my mom as a way to be defended. Which he still laments on to this day.
My mom saw how he feels towards me when he didn’t do something for me to stay the night and was upset we would talk about him. She said her sweet and kind man was different. I’ve called him out on subtle things he’s done such as unfriend me on social media (which to a 28F is a massive f*** you- and he told me it wasn’t a big deal), him telling my mom they need to leave during family gatherings, him lying about helping me financially and I paid him back, him taking pride in certain things that make him look good are just to name a few things.
After being talked to see family that hasn’t been seen, my mom and stepdad will come and he will ignore everyone and tell her to hurry up with angry expressions. This happened this past weekend at my grandmother’s house and my family that isn’t around much for years, saw his behavior. He knows people he kiss their asses so they don’t see the drama that he starts himself and blames others. Everyone is seeing through his selfish behavior and the disrespect is hurting.

So I made post before I live in Illinois and im 21 living with parents and sibling who dont mask. Honestly? I have since long time ago gave up trying to convince them to mask indoors at least for their health really. I gave up. But I still feel at risk. I havent felt safe for three years now and I have no money to my name. I have been seeking remote and hybrid positions but never hear anything back or rejection emails. I have applied to in person jobs too out of desperation and no luck either besides like 3-4 interviews. This was the worst time for this to happen. I am unemployed and have an associates degree that is not useful its only an associates in general studies and I cant afford to get any other course of training right now. My parents wont help me got to back too. I want to give up im being real because even if I could move out it could take me years to save up enough money. I feel too tired to mask in my house when I mask all day when I have to go outside. I feel damn near worn down. I don't know what jobs that are covid-safe that are in person I could apply to that would help me raise enough money to move out soon? I have no friends to move in or a boyfriend. I can't seek someone to date and move in with because most people arent taking any precautions I tried I looked in apps like, tinder, and hinge, and bumble bFF for friends. I tried covidmeetups the website it dead for me. I really don't know to everyone here if im going to be able to make it out and move out before I get reinfected so many times by my family that I die by sickness or become disabled and be gaslighted by my parents more. Is there any job out there I dont know how to navigate which in-person job can be safe enough for me in city that also gets very cold in the winter? Also I live in Illinois if anyone is living there rn hmu I would like to find a least a friend who understands.

I've been shutting down recently and it only just clicked to me why. Shutting down was how I coped when I was a child and didn't feel safe and didn't know what to expect from those around me. And the way my husband is acting at the moment, I am being reminded of my childhood.
It's not even as simple as just confront him on it. My MIL is currently being tested fir cancer. She's a very sick woman with a history of tumours abd all the signs seem to be pointing to this is stage 4 cancer. She also has a brain injury and so is not dealing well with it, so mp y husband and his sister are doing all they can to support her.
On top of that we have a 5 month old who has decided sleep is for the week, and as my husband has been off from work this week, he has done the lions share of the sleepless nights despite my protests as I have fibromyalgia. So he's sleep deprived and trying to come to terms with his mother's illness.
We also have not been intimate since my son was conceived because of my CPTSF and its really fucking with his head.
So when he is snapping at me and being mean, I know this isn't him. I have known him nearly a decade both romantically but also first as friends. I know this is just too much all at once, and fighting back is just going to make everything worse. So when he criticises me incessantly or compares me to my abuser, I just stop talking. Because I don't know what I am going to get from him anymore, which is exactly how I felt growing up
I don't feel like I can tell my best friend because her mum (a mother figure to me) passed away in December and she's buying her first house currently, she has too much of her own stuff. I also feel bad about talking about my MIL in case it retraumatises her which means I can't talk to anyone about it. Because when I expressed to my husband how I feel about it, he made a comment about making it about me when it's his mum. I am aware that neither MIL or my friends mum where mine, but they were more nurturing than my own and I still feel that co Necton to them
On top of this, I am finally about to get some proper trauma treatment after 3 years of waiting. I'm on step 2 of the 6 step assessment and if they font think I am stable enough, I won't be offered treatment. So I a. Hesitant to even rk yo my mental health team about it
I'm just feeling alone in this, thought I'd come to a community that might understand. I think im just hoping to hear something back, I'm not sure what though.

It has been 2 months of NC and today i was at a cafe with friends and the cafe is close to his house. I couldnt stop thinking about the possibility of him showing up. I wonder, if i invited him would he come? I didnt do it but being in his neighbourhood left me feeling so sad. I just want to forget but i want him to come back too. I know he is no good and i wouldnt communicate with him again but the idea of him not wanting me in his life is so hard to process. Idk what to do i want it all to change i want him to get back to me and tell me that he missed me. Why? Why dont i ever cross his mind?

I watched this entire series and am aggravated for a multitude of reasons. Obviously, the content is very aggravating, but the way the docuseries was edited and paced was also fucking horrible. It's honestly on-par with the quality and care of true crime mukbangs.

The entire first half of the series is from the father's point of view. Having seen the latter half, where it's basically been confirmed that she was indeed a child, I think doing this was horrible. Either they were actually entertaining his ideas, or they were using him as bait of sorts so that people can be shocked when they present the supposed truth later on. Not only that, but they do not pursue enough expert opinions throughout the entirety of the series. They show a discussion with a doctor near the end.

Did anyone else feel like it was seriously disappointing that they don't consult with any doctors that have been removed from the situation? Doctors that work specifically with different kinds of dwarfism? Psychologists? CHILD psychologists? I'm not even in the psych field but a lot of the behavior described is very clear to me that she definitely had behavioral issues due to the environments she has been in! Orphanages and being adopted multiple times would no doubt cause some sort of abandonment issues at the very least. No less in a family that sees their son as a cash cow. Along with that, the entire thing about her being physically developed made me so angry. Is it possible she was a few years older than claimed? Maybe. It is also possible that dwarfism (a condition that impacts development) could also contribute to a slightly earlier puberty? I think so. But we can't know because they don't even question what is told by this Shane Dawson-adjacent father. They don't even get a child psychologist to talk about the potential developments that occur from childhood SA (which conveniently line up with a lot of Natalia's actions).

I also found the conversations with the neighbors to be ridiculous. All of them talking about how evil and eerie and abandoned special needs child is. Letting this old hag go on for almost an hour about how crazy she was and how she was preying on her grandchildren very much aggravated me. All of the behavior they are describing is soooo self-explanatory for a child-- let alone a child in the environments she was in. She knew no boundaries because she was never taught them and had no adults in her life. Even when the old lady caught her in her house, all she was doing was looking for food? If she was a grown adult looking to be malicious, why would she be getting food, and why would she just accept that she was wrong when getting caught? It doesn't make sense. The editing of this doc, and keeping so many of these people's comments makes me sick. It is so disrespectful to this little girl who has been through so much. The entire thing about this that doesn't make sense is that even if Natalia was indeed 22, mentally it was VERY clear to me even in the short videos we see that she was mentally still a child. It makes absolutely no sense why they have all these people coming on camera to talk poorly about someone that was an abandoned child. Was the intent to villainize them as well?

Another layer of this is just the gall of opening these wounds for Natalia. This girl was gaslit so much throughout her childhood. And now we are giving a platform to her abusers. Millions of people are tuning in to hear the "perspective" of her abuser while he abdicated all responsibility. It makes me sick to my stomach. I've seen so many people discussing this docuseries that have seemed to miss so much information; there are many discussions I've seen misrepresenting parts of the doc and saying "well I think this is proof she's a grown adult." Just sooo irresponsible.

Long story short - first turntable setup. Just bought these items yesterday and I’m pumped to get to listening! This is in the “sitting room” area in our house - very open space with high ceilings. This sitting room is the front part while the dining room makes up the rest of the space.

I’d ideally like to spend $500 for a pair but I would go up to $800 if I found something really worthwhile. TBD on floor vs. bookshelf (looks are of importance given the significant other is already not to keen on having this “ruin the vibe” ha. Preference to woods or just generally inconspicuous that will blend with decor )
I got the KEF Q150 from Best Buy to test drive last night and I liked them but I wonder if I was impatient and rushed into it. I returned them and thought I would take my time to make a good decision. I felt that I could find something with more value at that price point? Maybe I’m just naive.

I'm a 27M, currently studying in uni here in Canada. Average looking guy, unironically have too much money to spend for my own, I have my own house and a good job. I'm living an introvert's paradise. But it's starting to take a toll on me.
I have bestfriends and family, but I'm always alone. I'd like to think that it's not too hard to get a date for me since I've tried, managed to hook up once in a while but it's always unsettling for me. Not just for me but my partners. I feel like I could be so much more and is still capable to be in a good relationship, there's just one problem. My ex wife ruined me and it scares me to no end that people are just out to take advantage of me.
Let's jump back about 12 years ago when we first became boyfriend and girlfriend. She is a mega stacy, malakas mang okray, and just the worst and also the best person I ever met that time. Half of our college life, I spent courting her friend who never reciprocated my feelings. It was okay, I was young, I went after the cutest girl in our room, it was a love based on looks i guess. So when her friend got a boyfriend, I gave up and just focus on my career. She was always my wingman so nung na busted ako, she just laughed at me. She's the worst person afterall. On our 3rd-4th year, we became close friends, best friends in fact. It was hard to say that I love her romantically because I see her as a tropa or maybe kapatid, or maybe I just distanced myself from her enough to avoid it, but I can tell it's there. She's not a very romantic person either, she loves kpop, very girly, but not the type of girl who has crushes on guys. She's also an introvert like me so we had the mutual boundary respect going on.
A month before we graduated, my papers to move to Canada as a permanent resident was accepted and we had to move on the next month right away. That's when I first realized I'm going to have to leave her and the thought nearly broke me. This is the first time I realized I actually love her. If her friend was 9/10, she was an 8 in appearance but is an 11/10 on everything else. So I confessed, I told her I love her and her reply was basically "I think I love you too but we're about to enter an LDR so I'm really not sure. Let's just stay the way we are and see where it goes."
6 years later we're still going strong. Everything I did for the past years was all for her. I got my first house, I saved tons that it's enough to let us travel to different countries after she accepts to marry me. So I went back home in PH, asked her to marry me and she did. I saved for a church wedding too but first we agreed to get a civil wedding first just so I could process her papers and bring her to Canada with me. It was the best time of our life and we're both happy. Until we're not.
Maybe the trauma clouded my memories, even as I type this, I'm trying to remember the events that concluded before the day I lost her. June 2019, 3rd month after our wedding, we're still happy, but I'm back to Canada and grinding for more savings. We were so contented and just waiting for her papers to be processed. November 2019, something happened to her relating to her sister's husband trying to make a move on her. Pina demanda nmin and I remember being so mad. December was hazy, we were both so stressed, winter weather is adding on to me, I'm always tired and cold. January 2020, 2 months before the start of pandemic. I remember I had a few arguments with her that wasn't really anything major. I got upset and decided it's my turn na babyhin, because I would always apologize to her when we argue sometimes. Initially I planned to see how long it'll take for her to text me. Little did I know that, it was the last time I would hear of her ever again.
During this time, I planned trips to surprise her. I booked us a flight to France by february, we'll spend a month there and go to Japan by March para tumira sa relative namin. By April we would go back home to PH and spend more time there together. But covid had other plans for me, by other plans I mean, it literally just kept me from seeing her.
February is fast approaching, and she's still not messaging me. At this point I've already been spamming our messenger for weeks. I've contacted her friends, sisters and mother and they won't tell me anything aside from just "give her time". Our trip to France was set and I went there myself, spend 2 days alone in a hotel before I decided to cut it short and go home. (I got lucky because the next day, they closed down the whole country). So I'm back here in Canada, waiting and just working. Worried sick and full of anxiety.
And just like that, I lost my wife and never heard of her again.
Of course I went through the stages of grief. I was in a loophole. Maybe she just needs more time.. Maybe she cheated? Maybe i fucked up for not apologizing to her on our last argument 6 months ago. By the end of 2020 I was in deep depression and I never really attempted suicide but the thought to this day lingers. It's just that, everytime the thought of killing myself becomes ripe, my bestfriends would always be there to distract me and give me a good time. Seeing my mother helped a lot too. I can't break her heart so I mostly fought for her. I haven't given her a proper gift since I was born because I didn't had a job back then and when I did get one, I was already so focus to my wife. The last thing I could do to her is give her a dead child. It was a harrowing 2 years of knowing nothing and just moving in autopilot. The box was so small that the ball just keeps bumping that button and it always fucks me up when it does. In those 2 years I've also burned through my savings building my expensive ass PCs, games, alchohol, weeds and traveling across Canada to hook up.
It was only last year when I finally got tired of my loophole that I finally started dragging myself to move on inch by inch. I started working again and got a good job. I'm making new friends and pursuing my career. I made peace with my unresolved past and each day, the box grows bigger for me, giving me more time and space to breathe on.
Today my ball hit the button and my world was falling apart until I got this off my chest by writing this. Thanks for reading.

I am feeling desperate, and I have no idea what to do now. Ever since I made the decision of moving out and moving to a new city, it has been hell in my house.
I grew up in a Latino Evangelical household with parents from Mexico. Both my parents grew up Catholic with parents who eventually converted to Evangelism. Because they were devout Catholics, by nature they would be devout in their new faith. I grew up with the idea that premarital sex is bad. That drinking alcohol is wrong. Praying before every meal. We went to church every Sunday for years. I’m now 24, about to turn 25, and moved back home after college. I felt like moving home after college was the right thing to do, but now I question it, despite saving a lot of money. In Mexico and latin america, it is common to live at home till you get married.
I would rarely go out on weekends, spending most of my time with my parents. I would occasionally go visit my friends from college but they all live out of town, since I have no friends that live in my hometown, or no one that I am close enough to. It was harder to because they were all in committed relationships, and were far enough to only see once a month.
5 months ago, I started dating my current boyfriend, who lives an hour away from me. I began seeing him every week, some weekends I would go visit him, while some he would come visit me. He has been very supportive and there for me despite the fact that I have strict parents. Shortly after I started dating him, I decided look for a new job because I was having major issues at the job I was at. I applied to a couple of places around the area, but the place that called me back happened to be near where he lives. I took the job because it would pay me better and I had more opportunities to collaborate with my colleagues, plus it is in a city, where I am living in a small town where dreams come to die.
As soon as I told my parents, they were not very happy with the idea. They said that all the women in their family never were desperate enough to move out or to have a boyfriend. That I was going down the same path as my friends and that they wanted me to have fun in my 20s (yet they give me curfews). That I was going to ruin my life by moving to a new city just for a guy. That I’m turning away from God more each day. Since I started seeing my boyfriend, I told them I was visiting a friend each time I was going to spend the night at his place for the same reason (strict parents create sneaky children) but they recently found out that I was spending the night with him. Because my mom is super religious, she said that I was disrespecting her and our household by having premarital sex. She also hates that we sometimes get drinks when we go on dates and that she was afraid I would become like my uncles who are alcoholics. That this guy was using me and that if he had good intentions, he would’ve met them a long time ago and would visit me every single time instead of driving to him (again, I visit him more because there are more things to do where he lives and he does visit me, we just don’t hang out at my house.)
The only reason I hadn’t introduced them has been because my boyfriend has had previous bad experiences and because I didn’t feel comfortable bringing someone home until our relationship got more serious. Now that we are heading that way, I am open about it but I rather him feel more comfortable than anything. While at his house one night, my dad called me asking me to come and to put him on the phone to ask what his intentions with me are was and that he wanted to speak to him directly. I cried because I felt so much pressure and while that happened, my boyfriend comforted me and held me while I cried. He said he wasn’t worried about it because they had never met them but his intentions were to make me happy and that my parents behavior wasn’t going to change my opinion of me.
Every day has become hell living with them. I care so much what they think of me but it is becoming harder to want to be around them. I spend more time in my room and say I’m depressed. I’m depressed and anxious because of them. Mom says she is sad with the decisions I have made and it is breaking her heart. Part of me doesn’t want to spend the night at my boyfriends anymore while I’m still living at home, but that’s giving in to my parents. She tracks my location on Find My Friends and track almost all of my moves. The only people that support my move are my boyfriend and my two best friends. I am choosing myself and all of a sudden, my parents believe I am going to ruin my life over a boy. While their intentions are valid, it’s how they are handling that makes me sad.
I’m over it and feel sick to my stomach. I am considering going through therapy once I move out after all of these events.

Making a post here because I don't really have anyone to talk to at the moment. I don't know if I want support or if I'm just venting.
I've had serious difficulty with varying levels of anxiety my entire life, and due to some complicated personal stuff I also have some issues with isolation and abandonment.
I've been genuinely trying to better myself and I'm normally very good at maintaining a positive mindset but I'll be totally honest, it sucks. Being alone makes me unhappy, but being around other people makes me anxious and uncomfortable. The only IRL friends I have are my roommates, and they both have social lives of their own so I end up spending a lot of time sitting around on my own.
It sucks! I hate being stuck at home, but going anywhere on my own makes me feel all blurry and disoriented. I've been trying to get out and do things by myself, but I really haven't been able to enjoy any of it. I feel pathetic and selfish and cowardly because I nearly always need to cling onto somebody else anytime I leave the house, and I know that nobody wants to be my babysitter.
And it's exhausting because I'm actively trying to improve. I'm trying to go out and do things and make new friends, but so far I haven't had any long term success. It just feels like a constant uphill struggle and I don't think I can do it all on my own, but I also know I can't constantly depend on others.

Hello I’m not quite sure what to do and I need advice on the following:
Based on the information below- Is what the HR director is doing even illegal? Is HR director creating a hostile work environment? Are all of our stories enough for action to be taken against the HR director? Do I get my own counsel for this? I am worried about retaliation being the whistleblower from not only HR but potentially others in senior leadership as well.
My experience:
I work for a non profit (less than 100 employees). I started about 3 years ago and ever since I joined our director of HR (a team of 2 people) has been incredibly problematic.
For background, I’m 25f, white, I’m based in California, and our organization was originally completely remote but has now shifted to virtual.
As the youngest employee in my company for quite some time there were always comments about my age that started out fine like “your generation gives me hope” that came from the director of HR. After a while it evolved into comments about how I was good with technology and just typical gen z sterotypes. They didn’t bother me that much as they weren’t negative or derogatory, but it made me feel incredibly isolated and just very singled out. I don’t think this qualifies as harassment, but this was just the start of her impact on my experience in the workplace.
We became a hybrid organization back in September (this decision was made sometime between March and May 2022, and announced in June 2022). I believe the decision was made in early April because I was warned not to move too far away when I asked about the process of moving at that time (this is important and relates to coworker #2s experience).
A few weeks into our new hybrid model, I had to have surgery where I ended up losing a significant amount of weight. I struggle with an eating disorder and this weight loss took a very large toll on my physical and mental health. I had to take some time off of work to recover, but when I returned 3 weeks later is when my HR director started making numerous comments on my body and appearance.
“You’re so skinny” “You lost so much weight, you need to get some meat on you” “I wish I could be that skinny, everything just goes right to my stomach now. But look at you, you’ve got nothing on you” (In response to me saying my weight loss isn’t a good thing for me) “oh just come over to my house. we’re always eating” “You look great, you’ve lost so much weight” “I just don’t have that metabolism like you do anymore”
After the third comment I made it very clear that I had an unhealthy relationship with food and this weight loss was very difficult for me to deal with. And still she commented on my body after the fact. I can tell it either came from a place of jealousy, or was meant as a compliment. But it is not okay to comment on people’s physical appearance whatsoever even if you think it’s a compliment. Many people have overheard it and it just again made me feel very singled out and isolated and incredibly uncomfortable in my own skin. It makes it difficult to do my job and although these comments aren’t as frequent, they have all happened since we came back into the office in the past 8 months.
Back in December I handed in my two weeks notice, but after long discussions I decided to stay as I got the promotion I had been fighting for for months. At the end of the conversation of me agreeing to stay on HR forced me to hug her, and it was extremely uncomfortable, I did not want to be touched but she did it anyways.
Over the past year I had had some funny calendar appointment names such as “leave me alone so I can be productive please and thanks”. Every single person who has seen that on my calendar has told me they thought it was funny. My HR director specifically said to me “that’s hilarious, oh you keep me young”. A few weeks ago she calls my supervisor into her office and told my supervisor to tell me to take it down bc HR director doesn’t like the language. That’s totally fine if somebody was uncomfortable with it/wanted me to take it down. But why didnt she come to me directly? And also with the gaslighting. It just all makes me feel uncomfortable coming into the office and interacting with her at all (which I have to for certain projects that she controls the budget)
