2023.03.24 03:56 lilnomad GPU Driver seems to be repeatedly crashing (black screen) when gaming with ASRock 6900 XT OC Formula. Looking for any suggestions. More details and specs in comments

Summary of Issue: When I am playing Escape From Tarkov or Call of Duty Warzone 2, my computer screen will suddenly go black, and the lights on the peripherals go off only for a brief period and then come back on. All of the lights in the case are on so it's not like it completely lost power. I believe I've read about this issue online and it sounds like it's a known issue with AMD GPUs. I have to restart the computer each time. I've been looking into the Windows Event Log and I get a Kernel-Power Event 41 when this happens. I am running three separate power cables to the GPU and no pigtails. PSU is new. I know it's only an 850W and 1000W is supposedly recommended for the OC Formula, but this issue is occurring with minimal activity in games. It may be reasonable to let the computer sit on a graphically simple game to see if this still happens. I am running out of ideas and it is very frustrating. At this point, I would kind of love to sell the card. Benchmarking with UserBenchmark typically gives me 200% or higher. So, it doesn't just crash from the benchmark but it's possible the benchmark is not long enough.
What I have tried: I've tried the MPO disable, switching from Adrenalin to Adrenalin Pro drivers. I've removed the drivers and reinstalled more than once. I have reset BIOS to default settings and I've turned off XMP/DOCP. This happens with stock GPU settings and with overclock. No clue what else to try. Hopefully, someone will be able to help. I would be happy to provide any additional information such as HWInfo stats.

2023.03.24 03:44 arjuna-argentum New Patent Awarded?

It looks like Theta may have just been awarded a brand new patent?
This is the tweet from Twitter user State of Theta: https://twitter.com/stateoftheta/status/1638679019712581632

And here is a link to the justia patents page: https://patents.justia.com/patent/11611615
It looks like Theta Labs applied for this patent on Nov 16, 2022. I'm still trying to find sources (other than Twitter) where it is actually officially announced that the patent has been awarded, but no luck so far.
It looks like the patent is in anticipation of the new Edge Store system. From the patent:

More specifically, in one aspect, one embodiment of the present invention is a computer-implemented method for decentralized storage, the method including the steps of dividing, by a source node in a decentralized network, a file into a plurality of file portions; for each given file portion in the plurality of file portions, locating a corresponding peer storage node in the decentralized network, where a distance between the corresponding peer storage node and the given file portion is below a given threshold, where the distance is computed based on an identifier of the corresponding peer storage node, and an identifier of the given file portion, and where the given threshold is associated with a storage capacity of the corresponding peer storage node; transmitting, by the source node, each given file portion to the corresponding peer storage node; and generating, by the source node, a file identifier for the file, based on the identifiers of the plurality of file portions. (emphasis added)
So, if I'm understanding this correctly, it looks like a file will be broken down into many parts, and each part will be stored on different Edge Nodes. And then there is some kind of method of locating the file pieces, figuring out where they are (physically?) located, and then re-assembling them on demand when needed somehow.
At least that's what I'm getting from all this.
I guess we'll have to wait for an official statement from Theta, but in the meantime, this certainly looks interesting. I've been wondering how files were going to be handled on the Edge Store...

2023.03.24 03:10 mollymarie123 Intern/New Grad Job Hunting: Beyond LinkedIn, Glassdoor etc.

Seeing posts asking where to search for new grad jobs beyond LinkedIn and Glassdoor etc. Here are some links. Some may be outdated but give clues. Another tactic is to Google “top tech companies in (city)” then go to the individual company’s careers page and search for SWE or whatever. When you make a spreadsheet of potential jobs, put down links of these companies even if they do not have anything now. Make a column for “check back later” and periodically check back.
A couple of the links are to a school’s career’s pages. Even though you cannot apply through these schools, they let you know what companies that are hiring. If you have access, check Handshake or your own school’s career office. Do a LinkedIn search for alumni from your school and try to connect so that maybe you can get a referral and/or lead on a job that is not posted yet. At end are a few links to online masters programs—application deadlines are now for fall so if you want that as a backup plan look into it at these places or others.
I hope it is OK to post the list, and apologize if not perfectly curated. Hope it helps someone.

2023.03.24 02:23 Reklawyad Visual Studio Deploy / Update from SCCM Help

Backstory - I setup the SCCM server in an OFFLINE environment. I've successfully built some apps, Notepad, Office 2016, CMAKE, and previously had a Visual Studio 2022 install of 17.3.1 deploying. We had downloaded the Visual Studio files according to Microsoft for a 'network' installation. I followed the guide I found on https://www.prajwaldesai.com/deploy-visual-studio-2019-using-sccm/
The install script vs_setup.exe --noweb --quiet --wait --norestart --productkey 1234512345123451234512345 --workloads_toinstall etc etc was working originally, then something changed in the directory and now it doesn't allow the users to do a repair or modify to add additional workloads (we had downloaded the entire vs_setup.exe on a internet connected system using the VSlayout -all)
We had a need to update to 17.5 recently, and I just downloaded the latest installer and full packages again to 17.5.2.
My major problem has been trying to do an uninstall/reinstall of the Visual Studio, When I've attempted to do the uninstall, it completes, but doesn't remove all the SDK/.net that was installed, and then when I go to do the install through SCCM of the new Visual Studio, it fails with a 8005 execution error, very generic, I've checked the log files but it doesn't seem to help at all.
I've even gone as far as reimaging the laptops that we have, even did a full install of Visual Studio (all workloads) it failed on the Microsoft.Net, but otherwise installed fine from what I can tell.
So I'm looking to see what others might be doing to install the program without issues, as well as performing updates without having to remote or visit each computer.. Literally pulling my hair out this week trying to figure out the best way to go about this!!
Thanks a ton in advance!!

Some of what the IFoA's Regulatory Board are too busy to deal with: very poor treatment of students
It is extraordinary that the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries' Regulatory Board says it is too busy to provide a response on this issue: very poor treatment of students.

Below are some of the quotes from students about failings in the exam system and also the website.
Exam system
"The exam software is buggy and unreliable. The IFoA needs to invest in a better platform to ensure that students don't encounter technical difficulties during exams." - u/futureactuary35 (2022)
"Why does the IFoA insist on making exams so long and difficult? It's not a fair reflection of real-world scenarios." - u/mathsnomad, 2023
"The exam fees are exorbitant and the IFoA needs to make them more affordable for students. It's unfair that only those with deep pockets can afford to pursue an actuarial career." - u/actuarystudent31 (2022)
"The exam dates are too inflexible and the IFoA needs to offer more options to accommodate students with different schedules. Not everyone can take time off work to sit for an exam." - u/actuaryaspirant33 (2022)
"The exam fees are too high and the IFoA needs to consider reducing them. It's already expensive enough to study for the exams without having to pay exorbitant fees on top." - u/frustrated_actuary39 (2022)
"The IFoA needs to offer more flexibility in the exam format. Allowing students to choose between written and computer-based exams would be a step in the right direction." - u/future_actuary41 (2022)
"The IFoA's exam process is a complete mess. It's stressful enough trying to study for these exams, but the added frustration of dealing with technical issues and poor communication makes it even worse." - userhandle, 2022
The new exam format is a complete disaster. It’s like they’re trying to make it as difficult as possible to pass." - u/jacko-1234, 2022
"I understand that exams should be challenging, but the IFoA seems to take it to an unnecessary extreme." - u/actuary2023, 2022
The fact that they're cutting down the time we have to complete exams is absurd. We're not machines, we're human beings and we need adequate time to process and comprehend what we're being tested on." - u/ChubbsMcGubbs123 (2022)
"The fact that we have to wait so long to get exam results back is unacceptable. We put in so much effort and money into these exams, and we deserve timely and accurate feedback." - u/ResultsWhen (2022)
"The IFoA needs to provide more study materials and resources for the exams. It's unfair to expect students to pay for expensive study materials from third-party providers." - u/actuarystudent40 (2021)
"I'm really disappointed with the IFoA's decision to cancel some exams due to the pandemic, without offering any alternative options for students to progress. It's a major setback for those of us who have been working hard to advance in our careers." - userhandle, 2021
"The exam marking process is a joke. There's no consistency in how the markers grade the exams, and it seems like luck of the draw whether you pass or fail. It's not a fair system." - userhandle, 2021
"The IFoA’s exam process is so outdated and frustrating. It’s time for them to modernize and improve their systems." - u/lily_rose88, 2021
"The exam system is so stressful and the IFoA doesn't seem to care about the mental health of its students." - u/actuarystudent96, 2021
"The exam system is outdated and needs a complete overhaul. It's stressful, expensive, and not necessarily the best way to gauge someone's ability to be a good actuary." - u/ActuaryLad (2021)
"The way the IFoA handles exam sittings is frustrating. The lack of transparency, mixed messages, and constant changes make it impossible to plan properly and feel confident going into an exam." - u/ExamAnxiety101 (2021)
"The IFoA needs to do a better job of preparing students for the exams. The study materials are often outdated or not comprehensive enough, and the sample questions don't accurately reflect what's on the exams." - userhandle, 2020
"The IFoA needs to provide more transparency in how they set and grade the exams. It's frustrating to not know what's expected of you, and to not have clear feedback on how you can improve." - userhandle, 2020
Website failings
"Trying to navigate the IFoA website feels like trying to solve a puzzle. It's so confusing and poorly organized." - u/futureactuary7 (2023)
"Why does the website have to be down for maintenance every other day? It's ridiculous." - u/aspiringactuary123 (2023)
"The IFoA website is an embarrassment. It's slow, unreliable, and outdated. It reflects poorly on the organization." - u/disappointed_actuary30 (2023)
"I don't understand why the IFoA can't get their act together and fix their website. It's incredibly frustrating." - u/actuaryaspirant22 (2022)
"I missed out on booking an exam slot because the website crashed. How is that fair to those of us who are trying to progress in our careers?" - u/actuaryintraining19 (2022)
"The IFoA website is not user-friendly at all. It's like they don't want us to be able to find the information we need." - u/actuaryinwaiting (2022)
"It's embarrassing that an organization of actuaries can't even get their own website to work properly." - u/actuarytrainee42 (2022)
"The IFoA website is a disaster. It's slow, unresponsive, and crashes on important days. They need to fix it ASAP." - u/frustrated_actuary23 (2022)
"The website is so poorly designed, it's like they never bothered to get any feedback from actual users." - u/actuary_learner (2021)
"I can't believe the website crashes every time there are exam results. It's not like they don't know how many people are going to be checking." - u/actuaryprospect45 (2021)

2023.03.24 01:35 ShadowOfHorror Building a Higher End PC but Unsure on Which Build I Should Do.

An explanation for this build. I need a computer that can handle multiple things with minimal problems. I do indie game development, I have an fairly large steam game library that has some more taxing games such as Ark, Skyrim, 7 Days to Die, and more, I sometimes do livestreams of different games and sometimes art/game development, I also would like it to handle emulation and VM. I have around $2,500 at my disposal. I can do only $3000 at most, but otherwise it's out if the question. I have taken IT and I'm a fast learner so I can put the PC together myself if work, health, and physical disability will allow for it. I need it to last a long time since savings take a decent while to build up, even if I need to upgrade parts to keep it running.
Both of these builds were recommended but I'm unsure on which I should build.

2023.03.24 01:01 MerkadoBarkada Alternergy IPO is today! (F:Mar24)

Happy Friday, Barkada --

The PSE lost 10 points to 6536 ▼0.2%

Thank you to all the Barkadans that supplied responses to the ALTER IPO Allocation Poll! Your data helps me to analyze the retail interest in the IPO (more on that below in the first story), and that gives everyone a little more information going into the first minutes of the stock's trading life.
Congratulations to the winner of the P500 Grab Food voucher! Your voucher has been mailed. Check your emails!
Shout-outs to Jonathan Burac, ralphsagarino, CHARToons, SE Accounting Solutions Philippines, Evolves Capital, Inc., Waldooo, Rolex Jodieres, LanAustria, Lance Nazal, arkitrader, Chip Sillesa, avenmicjohn, Justn, Dividend Pinoy PGG, meloi, Jay Agonoy, and Jing for the retweets, to Airwyn for the Investa repost, and to Mark Santarina StockBytes PH, Jayvee Menil, Genesis Umali, Evolves.co, and Mike Ting for the FB shares!

▌Main stories covered:

  • [IPO] Alternergy’s IPO is today... Alternergy [ALTER 1.28] will begin trading this morning after what was a pretty quiet offer period. Analysis of the MB ALTER IPO Allocation Poll shows that Barkadans requested ₱10.9 million in ALTER IPO stock, and received ₱10.5 million in allocations from brokers and the PSE EASy platform, which is an allocation rate of 96%. As usual, the majority of the fractional allocations came from COL Financial [COL 3.06 ▲2.0%] customers, which had a brokerage-low allocation rate of just 60%. The second highest number of fractional allocations came from AAA Equities, with an allocation rate of 61%. The majority of other brokers all achieved either 100% allocation rates or near-100% allocation rates for prospective IPO buyers. Barkadans that used PSE EASy to request allocations received over 96% of their requested amount.
    • MB: The overall profile of this Allocation Poll result resembles what I saw from PREIT [PREIT 5.28 unch], both in terms of overall interest, and how easy it was for buyers to get as much of the IPO as they wanted. Some Barkadans reported receiving fractional allocations from PSE EASy, but the reported zero allocation and the one other fractional allocation don’t align with how the PSE has said that it allocates PSE EASy allocations using the “waterfall method”, so I’m hesitant to count those as real fractional allocations. My feeling is that the PSE EASy tranche was not oversubscribed, and that only some brokers had enough demand to be forced into a fractional allocation situation. We won’t know about the institutional interest until a little bit later (the PSE cracked down on deal insiders talking about institutional take-up before the IPO), so it’s hard to say if there’s a swell of pent-up demand begging to get into this deal at the opening bell, and if so, the depth/breadth of that potential swell. Keep in mind, though, that this is only an informal poll of the 10,000 email subscribers and 30,000 to 50,000 daily readers of Merkado Barkada, and those that responded might not be a representative sample that we could use as a foundation for accurate analysis. If you are planning to trade the ALTER IPO, just know that there is a stabilization fund, so there is some downside risk protection, but that the presence of a stabilization fund doesn’t guarantee that the price won’t drop. If you’re buying for the short term, know your goals and your risk tolerance before you hit the buy button. Set your stops. That said, this is the first IPO of the year, so I’m going to be sitting there in my pajamas, bowl of popcorn in-hand, ready to take in the festivities!
  • [NEWS] Citicore Energy REIT declares ₱0.051/share combined dividend... Citicore Energy REIT [CREIT 2.47 ▲0.8%] [link], the Megawide Group’s renewable energy REIT, declared a special dividend of ₱0.007/share, and a Q4 regular dividend of ₱0.044/share, for a combined dividend of ₱0.051/share. Both dividends will be paid on May 15, to shareholders of record as of April 21. The Q4 regular dividend comes out of CREIT’s Q4 distributable income, and the special dividend represents CREIT’s share in the FY22 profits of the renewable energy power plants that lease its lands, as due to CREIT under the various lease agreements. The regular dividend is CREIT’s 4th consecutive dividend at that level, and the special dividend is the first that CREIT has been able to issue from the funds distributed to it from those profit sharing agreements. This brings CREIT’s total FY22 dividends to ₱0.183/share, which is 1.7% higher than the ₱0.18/share that CREIT projected in its Final REIT Plan. The difference was in the higher income earned through the profit sharing clauses. Relative to CREIT’s IPO price of ₱2.55/share, CREIT delivered dividends with a yield of 7.1% (vs. 7.0% projected). Assuming the same performance in 2023, that would represent a projected yield of 7.47% based on the pre-announcement closing price of ₱2.45/share.
    • MB: I’m glad to be able to draw a line under a full cycle of CREIT dividends, because for some reason, that annual special dividend from the profit sharing clauses was something that people didn’t easily wrap their heads around. And from a PR (and financial) perspective, it’s nice to see that the provision surprised to the upside and delivered (marginally) more value than was originally projected. While a potential IPO of CREIT’s parent company, Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation (CREC) doesn’t automatically increase CREIT’s stock price, it does provide a thicker stable of potential injections for the Megawide Group to pass down through this monetization channel. Keep in mind, though, that nothing obligates the Megawide Group, or CREC in particular, to make CREC transfer any of those projects to CREIT. This lack of certainty is why the track history of the group is so important when it comes to selecting a REIT. The Megawide Group has consistently delivered on its promises when it comes to CREIT.
  • [NEWS] Megawide ₱1.5-B preferred shares sale green-lit by PSE... Megawide [MWIDE 3.02 ▼1.0%] [link] disclosed a slate of tentative, PSE-approved dates for its ₱1.5-billion sale of Series 5 Preferred shares under the ticker, “”MW₱5”. The offer period will run from March 28 to April 4, with a listing on April 17. The preferred shares will carry a dividend rate of 7.9042%. MWIDE has said that it would use the proceeds to fully redeem the Series 2A Preferred Shares [MW₱2A] shares. The SEC approved had approved the sale back on February 28.
    • MB: As discussed before, this is a little bit of debt juggling that most companies will do when they start to issue preferred shares. Basically, a competent organization will run a sale like this to acquire the funds needed to redeem an earlier series of preferred shares before the passage of time triggers a punishing step-up in the dividend rate. The MW₱5 shares “step-up” on the 3rd anniversary of the listing date, which (for now) is April 17, to the higher of 12.00% or a “simple average of the closing per annum rate of the 5-year BVAL.” You can check the BVAL rates on the PDS website. Without getting too far into the weeds, MWIDE is going to do whatever it can to pay those prefs off before the 3rd anniversary in 2026, to avoid paying at least 12% interest.
  • [NOTES] Quick takes from around the market...
    • Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) [link] raised rates by 25 basis points, matching the raise of the US Federal Reserve that was announced just a half-day prior. The BSP said that “further monetary policy action was deemed necessary to address broadening price impulses emanating from robust domestic demand and lingering supply-side constraints.” BSP Governor, Felipe Medalla, said, “Anchoring inflation is our highest priority.” He added that the banking problems from the “rich countries” would not “rich countries” will not significantly impact the Philippine banking system.
      • MB Quick Take: I don’t think that it’s robust domestic demand that is pushing up the prices of basic goods, unless that’s how we’ve decided to refer to the people attempting to satisfy their most basic needs, which is in itself a pretty dystopian twist. Pushing interest rates up won’t stop people from wanting to buy onions to eat, or electricity to cool their homes, or gas to drive to work. As the BSP and many others have identified several times, the problem is generally within the government’s jurisdiction to fix.
    • ABS-CBN [ABS 7.35 ▼0.7%] [link] narrowed its net loss to ₱2.6 billion, which is 54% less than the ₱5.7 billion it lost in FY21. Consolidated revenues were up 8% to ₱19.2 billion (against a 4% growth in consolidated expenses), led by a 21% increase in advertising revenue to ₱6.4 billion. ABS now thinks of itself as a content-generation company.
      • MB Quick Take: ABS shareholders have had it tough. And yet as bad as it has been, I haven’t talked to a single investor that blames the Lopez Family or its executives for either the initial EJK of its franchise, or the company’s continued inability to turn a profit. If I were a shareholder, I’d feel as though this executive team has done just about all that it could to make lemonade out of this stupid situation’s lemons. It’s like the ABS team is still in the process of figuring out what it can rip out of the ABS aircraft to reduce its weight and allow the damaged engines to produce enough thrust and lift this battered plane off the pock-marked runway behind enemy lines.
    • Ovialand [OLI 5.60 pre-SEC] [link] filed its application to the SEC for a ₱2.2 billion IPO in late June or early July. The deal is made up of 336 million primary shares, and 60 million secondary shares. The mass market housing developer is using the IPO to raise money for land-banking and real estate pipeline development. SB Capital Investment Corp will be the sole issue manager and underwriter for the deal.
      • MB Quick Take: I’ve been following OLI for years, and you can read a November 2021 interview I had with OLI’s President, Pammy Olivares-Vital, where she talks in greater detail about the circumstances bringing OLI to the market. As you can see, Ms. Olivares-Vital and the OLI team have been patient, but it’s hard to get a feel exactly for “why now” as opposed to any other time over the past 18 months. They’ve had recent financial success, which is great timing for a listing, and they have a growth story that they can tell that could be appealing to investors. Still, I’m waiting to read the prospectus to get a real handle on what’s going on.
    • PLDT [TEL 1359.00 ▼1.6%] [link] revealed that the internal investigation into its ₱48-billion capex overrun has been completed by external counsel. The report “found no evidence of fraud, intentional concealment, or bad faith conduct” on the part of any employee, and found no reasonable basis to restate past financial statements that could have been impacted. TEL said that it has adopted and implemented “various operational enhancements” to controls relating to capex management, and said that it has negotiated terms with vendors representing 80% of the overrun, and “plans to engage” with smaller vendors representing the final 20%.
      • MB Quick Take: First things first, the report was done by “external counsel”, which is just a fancy way of saying “a contractual lawyer that doesn’t work for TEL.” While the external counsel doesn’t work for TEL as a regular employee, cashing paychecks and taking extended merienda breaks with the rest of the in-house legal team, this (to my knowledge) lawyer is still someone who was identified by TEL, contracted by TEL, and is, ultimately, paid by TEL. I’m not saying that the conclusions are wrong, and I’m not saying that the report is biased, but I am just showing what it means to say the report was done by an external counsel. That’s not an independent audit. And anyone that has ever hired external counsel, or has ever worked as external counsel, will know the unspoken (or sometimes spoken) tension whenever there are issues found that cast the subject in a negative light. And call me crazy, but the whole situation still just doesn’t make sense to me. How does ₱48 billion slip through the cracks like that? I mean, putting aside what we know about procurement in the Philippines, and all the potential conflicts and kickback issues that we’ve all dealt with or heard about, how does that happen? ₱48 billion is a massive amount of money, even for a huge company like TEL. I’m not trying to be a conspiracy theorist, but it just sounds weird to me. It doesn’t pass the smell test, and just saying that they’ve adopted “various operational enhancements” doesn’t tell me much of anything about whether or not the problem is fixed and shareholders are protected from a repeat performance.

2023.03.24 00:55 yesgarey VINE transit worked for us in 2022. Highly recommend!

This is the time of year this sub gets loaded with transportation questions, so I'm going to preemptively share our experience from 2022. It'll help you if you are near a BART station.
My wife and I visited from the east coast and went to all 3 festival days last year. We took the VINE shuttle from the El Cerrito del Norte BART station to the venue and back. It was quick, easy to find, the drivers were friendly and best of all it was FREE. Coach bus passes for the weekend were $200 each and so if you're on a budget I would highly recommend!
We stayed in SF because we had left a day before and after the trip to sightsee. Also, decent hotels near the wharf were a reasonable $150/night compared to the $500 or more closer to Napa. It was a little far but we slept on the way to and from the show each day. It worked out and we got max value out of our stay!
